Inúmeros trabalhos têm demonstrado o efeito benéfico da adubação com silício sobre o acréscimo da produção de diversas culturas, como, por exemplo, arroz, cana-de-açúcar e batata. No entanto, são escassas as informações sobre os benefícios nutricionais do silício para a cultura do milho. Desta maneira, objetivou-se, neste estudo, avaliar o efeito de doses e épocas de aplicação de silício, via foliar, nas características agronômicas e na produtividade do milho, cultivado no ano agrícola 2007/2008. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial (4 x 3) + 1, com quatro repetições, envolvendo doses de silício (130, 260, 390 e 520 g ha-1 de Si) aplicadas via foliar, épocas de aplicação (2, 5 e 8 folhas expandidas) e uma testemunha (sem aplicação de Si). As variáveis analisadas foram altura das plantas e a inserção da primeira espiga, diâmetro de colmo, índice de clorofila foliar, teor foliar de silício, número de grãos por espiga, massa de 100 grãos e produtividade de grãos. O silício aplicado via foliar influenciou somente o teor foliar de Si.

O presente trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de se estudar 3 doses de N e 3 doses de K2O, combinadas entre si e aplicadas em cobertura aos 15, 30 e 45 dias após a emergência das plântulas, na eficiência do uso da água e na qualidade de frutos de melão. Utilizou-se um Podzólico Vermelho Escuro, eutrófíco, textura média/argilosa, do município de Ilha Solteira(SP). O experimento foi implantado no ano de 1991 fazendo-se uso dos cultivares Valenciano Amarelo e Eldorado 300, em espaçamento de 2,0m entre linhas e 0,75m entre covas. A cultura foi conduzida sem capação e desbrota e os tratamentos fítossanitários procedidos de acordo com a necessidade. Pelos resultados obtidos verificou-se que o N ou o K2O influenciaram alguns parâmetros no cultivar Eldorado 300: peso da casca, peso de sementes com mucilagem e acidez titulável, além do rendimento de polpa no cultivar Valenciano Amarelo.

Objetivando verificar a influência do teor de água do substrato na germinação de sementes de cebola (Allium cepa L.), conduziu-se um ensaio sob condições de ambiente de laboratório. Os efeitos de cinco níveis de água no substrato solo x areia (3:1), 20, 40, 60, 80 e 100% da capacidade de retenção foram avaliados através da porcentagem de emergência no 14° dia da semeadura e pesos da matéria verde e seca das plântulas normais. Para tanto, 200 sementes do cultivar Pira Ouro por tratamento, em quatro repetições de 50, foram semeadas a 1,5 cm de profundidade, mantendo-se constantes os níveis de água no substrato. Os resultados possibilitaram concluir que os níveis de umidade do solo indicados para germinação de sementes de cebola são de 40% e 60% da capacidade de retenção do substrato, por possibilitarem uma melhor emergência, peso da matéria verde e seca das plântulas.

O efeito de cinco composições de substratos na produção de mudas de laranjeira `Pêra' (Citrus sinensis, L. Osbeck) foi estudado sobre três porta-enxertos (limoeiro `Cravo', Citrus limonia, L. Osbeck; tangerineira `Cleópatra', Citrus reticulata, Blanco; e citrumeleiro `Swingle', Citrus paradisi x Poncirus trifoliata). O experimento obedeceu ao delineamento estatístico de blocos aleatorizados em esquema fatorial 5 x 3 (substratos x porta-enxertos). As composições de misturas utilizadas como substrato e respectivas combinações volumétricas foram: 1) Terra (100%); 2) Terra (33%) + areia fina (33%) + esterco bovino curtido (33%); 3) Terra (33%) + vermiculita (33%) + esterco bovino curtido (33%); 4) Terra (33%) + raspas de madeira (33%) + esterco bovino curtido (33%); 5) Terra (25%) + raspas de madeira (25%) + areia fina (25%) + esterco bovino curtido (25%). A análise dos resultados revelou que plantas de limoeiro `Cravo' e citrumeleiro `Swingle' apresentaram maior desenvolvimento do que as de tangerineira `Cleópatra'. A mistura de materiais com solo mostrou-se vantajosa e induziu à formação de plantas mais desenvolvidas do que aquelas em substrato constituído de terra exclusivamente. A composição do substrato influenciou diferentemente no desenvolvimento de cada porta-enxerto, mas de uma forma geral, composições contento 1/3 de volume de solo e 1/3 de volume de esterco bovino proporcionaram bons resultados para os três porta-enxertos estudados.

INTRODUÇÃO: Estratégias efetivas para profilaxia do tromboembolismo venoso (TEV) são amplamente disponíveis, mas são ainda subutilizadas, principalmente no nosso meio. OBJETIVO: Avaliar o efeito da implementação de diretriz para profilaxia do TEV, em pacientes cirúrgicos, sobre a conduta da equipe de saúde na prescrição dessa profilaxia. Método. Estudo retrospectivo pré-intervenção - pós-intervenção. Prontuários de 150 pacientes antes e 150 depois da implementação de uma diretriz para a profilaxia (AID e DID) foram sorteados dentre pacientes de mais de 40 anos internados para cirurgia maior abdominal ou ortopédica. Foram registrados dados demográficos, referência a risco de TEV no prontuário, prescrição de profilaxia para TEV e diagnóstico de TEV durante a internação. RESULTADOS: Não houve diferença entre os dois grupos, AID e DID, quanto aos dados demográficos e ao tempo de profilaxia (5,6 x 6,6 dias). A frequência de profilaxia AID x DID antes da cirurgia foi: profilaxia farmacológica (PF), 6% x 9%; meias de compressão graduada (MCG), 4% x 3%; compressão pneumática intermitente (CPI), 2% x 3%. Após cirurgia: PF 53% x 53%; MCG, 23% x 40% (P<0,05); CPI, 26% x 32% . No total, AP, foi prescrita profilaxia para 60,5% dos pacientes AID e para 66,5% DID, mas a profilaxia foi considerada adequada em 34% dos pacientes AID e em 32% DID. Conclusão. A adoção do protocolo, embora com maior a preocupação com a profilaxia, traduzida pelo aumento na prescrição de MCG, melhorou minimamente sua qualidade, indicando a necessidade de outras intervenções ativas e contínuas para aumentar a aderência ao mesmo.

Polycrystalline BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.4 and 0.8) thin films with a perovskite structure were prepared by the polymeric precursor method on a platinum-coated silicon substrate. High-quality thin films with uniform composition and thickness were successfully produced by dip-coating and spin-coating techniques. The resulting thin films prepared by dip and spin-coating showed a well-developed dense polycrystalline structure with uniform grain size distribution. The metal-BST-metal structure of the thin films displays good dielectric and ferroelectric properties. The ferroelectric nature to BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.8) thin film, indicated by butterfly-shaped C-V curves and confirmed by the hysteresis curve, showed 2P(r) = 5.0 muC/cm(2) and E-c = 20 kV/cm. The capacitance-frequency curve reveals that the dielectric constant may reach a value of up to 794 at 1 kHz. on the other hand, the BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.4) thin films had paraelectric nature and dielectric constant and the dissipation factor at a frequency of 100 kHz were 680 and 0.01, respectively, for film annealed at 700 degreesC. In addition, an examination of the film's I-V curve at room temperature revealed the presence of two conduction regions in the BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.4 and 0.8) thin films, showing ohmic-like behavior at low voltage and a Schottky-emission or Poole-Frenkel mechanism at high voltage. We have investigated, by in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), the kinetics of formation of zinc oxide colloidal suspensions obtained after refluxing alcoholic solution of zinc acetate and catalysed by lithium hydroxide. The experimental results demonstrate that the suspensions are composed of colloidal spheroidal particles with a multimodal size distribution. The average radius of the main mode, approximately 2 nm, is invariant but the number of these basic particles continuously increases for increasing hydrolysis reaction time. The other two modes correspond to particles with average radii close to 6 and 10 nm, respectively. The larger particles are formed by coagulation of the smaller ones. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Objective: To evaluate the influence of different cross-head speeds on shear bond strength test on the dentin surface.Methods: One hundred and twenty extracted bovine incisors were embedded in polystyrene resin. The specimens were prepared by wet grinding with 320-, 400- and 600-grit Al2O3 paper exposing dentin. After the application of the adhesive system Single Bond (3M) to etched dentin, the composite resin Z-100 (3M) was applied and light cured. The specimens were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 30). The shear bond strength tests were performed with an EMIC DL 500 universal testing machine at four different cross-head speeds: 0.50 (A); 0.75 (B); 1.00 (C); and 5.00 mm/min (D).Results: the mean values of shear bond strength in MPa (SD) were: A, 11.78 (3.91); B, 11.82 (4.78); C, 16.32 (6.45); D, 15.46 (5.94). The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). The results indicated that A = B < C = D. The fracture pattern was evaluated by visual analysis in a stereomicroscope (25 x). The percentage of fractures that occurred at the adhesive interface were: A, 92.5%; B, 91.6%; C, 70.0%; D, 47.0%. The Student's t-test to percentages ( = 0.05) indicated that there were no significant differences among A, B and C; A and B differed from D, and there was no significant difference between C and D.Significance: Different cross-head speeds may influence the shear bond strength and the fracture pattern in dentin substrate. Vitreous samples were prepared in the (100 2 x) NaPO3-x WO3 (0 <= x <= 70) glass forming system using conventional melting-quenching methods. The structural evolution of the vitreous network was monitored as a function of composition by thermal analysis, Raman spectroscopy and high resolution one- and two-dimensional P-31 solid state NMR. Addition of WO3 to the NaPO3 glass melt leads to a pronounced increase in the glass transition temperatures, suggesting a significant increase in network connectivity. At the same time Raman spectra indicate that up to about 30 mol% WO3 the tungsten atoms are linked to some non-bridging oxygen atoms (W-O- or W=O bonded species), suggesting that the network modifier sodium oxide is shared to some extent between both network formers. W-O- W bond formation occurs only at WO3 contents exceeding 30 mol%. P-31 magic angle spinning (MAS)-NMR spectra, supported by two-dimensional J-resolved spectroscopy, allow a clear distinction between species having two, one, and zero P-O-P linkages. The possible formation of some anionic tungsten sites suggested from the Raman data implies an average increase in the degree of polymerization for the phosphorus species, which would result in diminished P-31/Na-23 interactions. This prediction is indeed confirmed by P-31{Na-23} and Na-23{P-31} rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) NMR results, which indicate that successive addition of WO3 to NaPO3 glass significantly diminishes the strength of phosphorus-sodium dipole-dipole couplings.

Reaction of equimolar amounts of [Co-2(CO)(6)(dppm)] and [Cr(eta(6)-C6H5)(C=-CCH2NMe2)(CO)(3)] (1) in benzene gives the novel heterotrimetallic complex [Cr(eta(6)-C6H5){(mu(2)-eta(2)-C=CCH2NMe2)Co-2(CO)(4)(dppm)}(CO)(3)] (2) in 40% yield. The influence of four levels (25, 50, 75 and 100%) of Class A pan evaporation replenishment (PER) on the marketable yield and bioactive amine content of American lettuce (Lactuca sativa cv Lucy Brown) grown under greenhouse conditions and drip irrigation was investigated. Lettuce was planted in 1.20 m x 2.10 m plots in a completely randomised block design with three replications. Lowest fresh head weights and diameters were obtained at 25% PER. Highest marketable yields and fresh head weights were obtained at 100% PER; however, no significant difference was observed when using 75% PER. The fresh head diameter was smaller only when using 25% PER. Four amines were detected in lettuce grown under 100% PER, with a total content of 7.60 mg kg(-1). Spermidine was the prevalent amine, followed by putrescine, cadaverine and agmatine. Higher spermidine and cadaverine levels were observed in the outer layers of leaves than in the intermediate and inner leaves. The contents of every amine except agmatine increased with water stress; however, a significant difference was observed only between 100 and 25% PER. The concentrations of accumulated putrescine were not capable of negatively affecting the sensory quality of the lettuce. (c) 2005 Society of Chemical Industry.

The crystal structure, surface morphology and electrical properties of layered perovskite calcium bismuth niobate thin films (CaBi2Nb2O9-CBN) deposited on platinum coated silicon substrates by the polymeric precursor method have been investigated. The films were crystallized in a domestic microwave and in a conventional furnace. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy analysis confirms that the crystallinity and morphology of the films are affected by the different annealing routes. Ferroelectric properties of the films were determined with remanent polarization P-r and a drive voltage V-c of 4.2 mu C/cm(2) and 1.7 V for the film annealed in the conventional furnace and 1.0 mu C/cm(2) and 4.0 V for the film annealed in microwave furnace, respectively. A slight decay after 10(8) polarization cycles was observed for the films annealed in the microwave furnace indicating a reduction of the domain wall mobility after interaction of the microwave energy with the bottom electrode. The water restriction can damage the performance of crops, especially in the flowering period. Thus, the aim of this research was to evaluate the response of genotypes of wheat submitted to water deficit in the beginning of flowering. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse, in a completely randomized design, in factorial scheme 3 x 2, with five replications. The factors studied were: three wheat cultivars (Coodetec (CD) 105, 108 and 111) and 2 irrigation managements (with and without imposition of water deficit). During the period of water deficit imposition, gravimetric soil moisture and the relative content of water in leaf were evaluated, while at the moment of rehydration the biometric variables were determined. At the end of the crop cycle the components of production were evaluated. Reduction was found in the gravimetric soil moisture, in the relative levels of water and in all biometric variables, in function of the water deficit. The grain production showed difference only among the water regimes, in which the cultivar CD 111 is more efficient in the maintenance of the productive potential in conditions of water deficit, through the quick recovery in the relative content of water in leaves.
