Objectives : To develop a method to mark hatchery reared saucer scallops to distinguish them from animals derived from wild populations. Outcomes achieved : Juvenile saucer scallop (Amusium balloti) shells have been successfully marked en masse using 3 chemicals, namely alizarin red S, calcein and oxytetracycline (OTC). Considering spat survival, mark quality and mark duration collectively, the most successful chemical was OTC. Scallop spat immersed for three days in 200 or 300 mg L-1 OTC resulted in good mark incorporation and high survival. Tris was an effective means of buffering pH change during OTC treatment, with no apparent adverse effects to the scallops. The marks from OTC treatment were still visible in live scallops for at least 10 months, even with exposure to natural filtered light during that period. A second discernible shell mark was added 27 days after the first with no evident toxicity to the scallops. A simulated seabed system was designed which provide marked improvements in scallop juvenile survival and growth. Advice on shell marking has been given to QSS by DPI&F, and the first commercial trials have now commenced, with initial results showing successful marking of juvenile scallops at QSS. This research will allow the industry to monitor the survival, growth and movement of specific cohorts of deployed scallops. This will provide valuable feedback to assess the value of the ranching venture, to optimise release strategies, and to develop improved species management plans.

We present a unified approach to repulsion in ionic and van der Waals solids based on a compressible-ion/atom model. Earlier studies have shown that repulsion in ionic crystals can be viewed as arising from the compression energy of ions, described by two parameters per ion. Here we obtain the compression parameters of the rare-gas atoms Ne. Ar. Kr and Xe by interpolation using the known parameters of related equi-electronic ions (e.g. Ar from S2-. Cl-, K- and Ca2-). These parameters fit the experimental zero-temperature interatomic distances and compressibilities of the rare-gas crystals satisfactorily. A hightemperature equation of state based on an Einstein model of thermal motions is used to calculate the thermal expansivities, compressibilities and their temperature derivatives for Ar. Kr and Xe. It is argued that an instability at higher temperatures represents the limit to which the solid can be superheated. beyond which sublimation must occur.

Queensland's hardwood plantation industry is producing increasing volumes of sawlog, veneer and poles. Wood quality can sometimes be impaired in some plantation hardwoods when the growing trees are attacked by insect borers. Susceptibility to borer damage varies with the species as well as site conditions or location. The risk model developed from this project will enable the plantation industry to match tree species with appropriate growing conditions in Queensland.

Honey Gold mango is a new Australian variety owned by a Queensland company, and in high demand because of very good flavour and appearance. It develops under skin browning (USB) when grown in hot areas. It appears after packing and the fruit need to be re-sorted at the markets to remove affected fruit. Production and postharvest treatments will be developed to reduce USB and increase profitability. Other production and harvest factors causing quality loss will be also be identified through a commercial downgrade analysis program in the packhouse. Grower training will reduce downgrades and improve the percentage of fruit in premium grade.

Near the boundaries of shells, thin shell theories cannot always provide a satisfactory description of the kinematic situation. This imposes severe limitations on simulating the boundary conditions in theoretical shell models. Here an attempt is made to overcome the above limitation. Three-dimensional theory of elasticity is used near boundaries, while thin shell theory covers the major part of the shell away from the boundaries. Both regions are connected by means of an “interphase element.” This method is used to study typical static stress and natural vibration problems
