Graphene with large surface area and robust structure has been proposed as a high storage capacity anode material for Li ion batteries. While the inertness of pristine graphene leads to better Li kinetics, poor adsorption leads to Li clustering, significantly affecting the performance of the battery. Here, we show the role of defects and doping in achieving enhanced adsorption without compromising on the high diffusivity of Li. Using first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we carry out a comprehensive study of diffusion kinetics of Li over the plane of the defective structures and calculate the change in the number of Li atoms in the vicinity of defects, with respect to pristine graphene. Our results show that the Li-C interaction, storage capacity and the energy barriers depend sensitively on the type of defects. The un-doped and boron doped mono-vacancy, doped di-vacancy up to two boron, one nitrogen doped di-vacancy, and Stone-Wales defects show low energy barriers that are comparable to pristine graphene. Furthermore, boron doping at mono-vacancy enhances the adsorption of Li. In particular, the two boron doped mono-vacancy graphene shows both a low energy barrier of 0.31 eV and better adsorption, and hence can be considered as a potential candidate for anode material.

Earth abundant alternative chalcopyrite Cu2CoSnS4 (CCTS) thin films were deposited by a facile sol-gel process onto larger substrates. Temperature dependence of the process control of deposition and desired phase formations was studied in detail. Films were analyzed for complete transformation from amorphous to polycrystalline, with textured structures for stannite phase, as reflected from the X-ray diffraction and with nearly stoichiometric compositions of Cu:Co:Sn:S = 2:0:1:0:1:0:4:0 from EDAX analysis. Morphological investigations revealed that the CCTS films with larger grains, on the order of its thickness, were synthesized at higher temperature of 500 degrees C. The optimal band gap for application in photovoltaics was estimated to be 1.4 eV. Devices with SLG/CCTS/Al geometry were fabricated for real time demonstration of photoconductivity under A.M 1.5 G solar and 1064 rim infrared laser illuminations. A photodetector showed one order current amplification from similar to 1.9 X 10(-6) A in the dark to 2.2 x 10(-5) A and 9.8 X 10(-6) A under A.M 1.5 G illumination and 50 mW cm(-2) IR laser, respectively. Detector sensitivity, responsivity, external quantum efficiency, and gain were estimated as 4.2, 0.12 A/W, 14.74% and 14.77%, respectively, at 50 mW cm(-2) laser illuminations. An ON and OFF ratio of 2.5 proved that CCTS can be considered as a potential absorber in low cost photovoltaics applications.

An organic-aqueous interfacial reaction at room temperature has been employed to synthesize large-area self-assembled films consisting of PbSe single crystallites. The use of the films for the low-cost fabrication of IR-photodetectors has been explored. (111)-oriented single crystallites of PbSe self-assemble to form robust large-area films. The near-infrared photoresponse of the film measured at room temperature showed large responsivity and gain owing to trap-associated mechanisms. Low-cost, mild reaction conditions and tunability of the nature of deposits make the present strategy useful for synthesizing large-area films of functional materials for possible opto-electronic applications.

Permanent plastic deformation induced by mechanical contacts affects the shape recovery of shape memory alloys. To understand the shape recovery of NiTiCu thin films subjected to local contact stresses, systematic investigations are carried out by inducing varying levels of contact stresses using nanoindentation. The resulting indents are located precisely for imaging using a predetermined array consisting of different sized indents. Morphology and topography of these indents before and after shape recovery are characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope and Atomic Force Microscope quantitatively. Shape recovery is found to be dependent on the contact stresses at the low loads while the recovery ratio remains constant at 0.13 for higher loads. Shape recovery is found to occur mainly in depth direction of the indent, while far field residual stresses play very little role in the recovery. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Chemical doping of graphene becomes necessary to create a band gap which is useful for various applications. Furthermore, chemical doping of elements like boron and nitrogen in graphene gives rise to useful properties. Since chemically doped graphene is both of academic and technical importance, we have prepared this article on the present status of various aspects of this important class of materials. In doing so, we have covered the recent literature on this subject citing all the major references. Some of the aspects that we have covered are the synthesis of chemically doped graphene followed by properties and applications. The applications discussed relate to gas adsorption, lithium batteries, supercapacitors, oxygen reduction reaction, field emission and photochemical water splitting. Characterization of chemically doped graphene also included. We believe that the article will be useful to all those interested in graphene and related materials and provides the present status of the subject. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films were deposited on glass and silicon (100) substrates by the sol-gel method. The influence of film thickness and annealing temperature on optical transmittance/reflectance of TiO2 films was studied. TiO2 films were used to fabricate metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitors. The capacitance-voltage (C-V), dissipation-voltage (D-V) and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were studied at different annealing temperatures and the dielectric constant, current density and resistivity were estimated. The loss tangent (dissipation) increased with increase of annealing temperature.

Investigations on the electrical switching, structural, optical and photoacoustic analysis have been undertaken on chalcogenide GeSe1.5S0.5 thin films of various thicknesses prepared by vacuum evaporation technique. The decrease of band gap energy with increase in film thickness has been explained using the `density of states model'. The structural units of the films are characterized using Raman spectroscopy and the deconvoluted Raman peaks obtained from Gaussian fit around 188 cm(-1), 204 cm(-1) and 214 cm(-1) favors Ge-chalcogen tetrahedral units forming corner and edge sharing tetrahedra. All the thin films samples have been exhibited memory-type electrical switching behavior. An enhancement in the threshold voltages of GeSe1.5S0.5 thin films have been observed with increase in film thickness. The thickness dependence of switching voltages provide an insight into the switching mechanism and it is explained by the Joule heating effect. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Sulfurization of Cu(In,Al)Se-2 films is carried out in an indigenously made set up at moderately low temperature. The films are sulfurized for different time durations of 15, 30, 45 and 60 min at 150 degrees C. InSe and Cu2S phases occurred in the films during the initial stage of sulfurization along with Cu(In,Al)(Se,S)(2) phase. The compositional analysis shows that the sulfur incorporation is saturated after 30 min. Crystallinity increased with the increase in sulfurization time. The band gap of the Cu(In,Al)Se-2 film increased up to 1.35 eV with the addition of sulfur. Single phase Cu(In,Al)(Se,S)(2) with high crystallinity is obtained after 60 min of sulfurization. Doubly (Sn + F) doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Sn:F) thin films were deposited onto glass substrates using a simplified spray pyrolysis technique. The deposited films were annealed at 400 degrees C under two different ambiences (air and vacuum) for 2 h. The photocatalytic activity of these films was assessed through photocatalytic decolorization kinetics of Methylene Blue (MB) dye and the decolorization efficiency of the annealed films was compared with that of their as-deposited counterpart. The photocatalytic studies reveal that the ZnO:Sn:F films annealed under vacuum environment exhibits better photocatalytic efficiency when compared with both air annealed and as-deposited films. The SEM and TEM images depict that the surface of each of the films has an overlayer comprising of nanobars formed on a bottom layer, having spherical grains. The studies show that the diameter of the nanobars plays crucial role in enhancing the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO:Sn:F films. The structural, optical and electrical studies substantiate the discussions on the photocatalytic ability of the deposited films. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We hereby report the development of non-polar epi-GaN films of usable quality, on an m-plane sapphire. Generally, it is difficult to obtain high-quality nonpolar material due to the planar anisotropic nature of the growth mode. However, we could achieve good quality epi-GaN films by involving controlled steps of nitridation. GaN epilayers were grown on m-plane (10-10) sapphire substrates using plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The films grown on the nitridated surface resulted in a nonpolar (10-10) orientation while without nitridation caused a semipolar (11-22) orientation. Room temperature photoluminescence study showed that nonpolar GaN films have higher value of compressive strain as compared to semipolar GaN films, which was further confirmed by room temperature Raman spectroscopy. The room temperature UV photodetection of both films was investigated by measuring the I-V characteristics under UV light illumination. UV photodetectors fabricated on nonpolar GaN showed better characteristics, including higher external quantum efficiency, compared to photodetectors fabricated on semipolar GaN. X-ray rocking curves confirmed better crystallinity of semipolar as compared to nonpolar GaN which resulted in faster transit response of the device. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Recently, it was found that the ferromagnetic SrRuO3 when combined with another ferromagnet in thin film form gives rise to exchange bias (EB) effect. However, we observed EB in single, strained, SrRuO3 thin films grown on diamagnetic LaAlO3 (100) substrates. It displays the training effect, which essentially confirms EB. The temperature dependence of the EB reveals the blocking temperature to be around similar to 75 K. The strength of the exchange bias decreases with the increase in thickness of the film. We observe tensile strain in the out of plane direction. Further, the presence of in-plane compressive strain is observed through asymmetric reciprocal space mapping. Finally, we find a direct link between strain and EB. The evolution of strain with thickness matches well with the nature of scaled EB. It has been shown earlier by first principle calculations that this strain can induce EB in thin films. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Bi1-xCaxMnO3 (BCMO) thin films with x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 are successfully deposited on the n-type Si (100) substrate at two different temperatures of 400 degrees C and 800 degrees C using RF magnetron sputtering. The stoichiometry of the films and oxidation state of the elements have been described by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Dielectric measurement depicts the insulating property of BCMO films. Magnetic and ferroelectric studies confirm the significant enhancement in spin orientation as well as electric polarization at room temperature due to incorporation of Ca2+ ions into BiMnO3 films. The BCMO (x = 0.2) film grown at 400 degrees C shows better magnetization (M-sat) and polarization (P-s) with the measured values of 869 emu / cc and 6.6 mu(C)/cm(2) respectively than the values of the other prepared films. Thus the realization of room temperature ferromagnetic and ferroelectric ordering in Ca2+ ions substituted BMO films makes potentially interesting for spintronic device applications. Contact damage in curved interface nano-layeredmetal/nitride (150 (ZrN)/10 (Zr) nm) multilayer is investigated in order to understand the role of interface morphology on contact damage under indentation. A finite element method (FEM) model was formulated with different wavelengths of 1000 nm, 500 nm, 250 nm and common height of 50 nm, which gives insight on the effect of different curvature on stress field generated under indentation. Elastic-plastic properties were assigned to the metal layer and substrate while the nitride layer was assigned perfectly elastic properties. Curved interface multilayers show delamination along the metal/nitride interface and vertical cracks emanating from the ends of the delamination. FEM revealed the presence of tensile stress normal to the interface even under the contact, along with tensile radial stresses, both present at the valley part of the curve, which leads to vertical cracks associated with interfacial delamination. Stress enhancement was seen to be relatively insensitive to curvature. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nonpolar a-plane InN films were grown on r-plane sapphire substrate by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy with GaN underlayer. Effect of growth temperature on structural, morphological, and optical properties has been studied. The growth of nonpolar a-plane (1 1 -2 0) orientation was confirmed by high resolution X-ray diffraction study. The film grown at 500 degrees C shows better crystallinity with the rocking curve FWHM 0.67 degrees and 0.85 degrees along 0 0 0 1] and 1 - 1 0 0] directions, respectively. Scanning electron micrograph shows formation of Indium droplets at higher growth temperature. Room temperature absorption spectra show growth temperature dependent band gap variation from 0.74-0.81 eV, consistent with the expected Burstein-Moss effect. The rectifying behaviour of the I-V curve indicates the existence of Schottky barrier at the InN and GaN interface. (C) 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Dispersion of nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposite films determines the application potential of these systems as novel materials with unique physical properties. Grafting polymers to, mostly inorganic, nanoparticles has been suggested as an effective strategy to enhance dispersion and hence the efficacy of materials. In this review, we discuss the various parameters which control dispersion of polymer grafted nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposite films. We discuss how surface x-ray scattering and microscopy can provide complementary and unique information in thin polymer nanocomposite films to unravel the subtle interplay of entropic and surface interactions, mediated by confinement, that leads to enhanced dispersion of the nanoparticles in these films.
