The southward passage of the Rivera triple junction and its effect on the North American plate are primary controls on the Miocene tectonic evolution of the outer borderland of California. Detrital modes of sand shed off the Patton Ridge and cored by the Deep Sea Drilling Project provide evidence of progressive tectonic erosion of the Patton accretionary prism and neartrench volcanism. Volcanic glass in the sediment is predominantly calcalkaline rhyolite and andesite, typical of subductionrelated volcanism, but also includes minor low-K2O tholeiitic basalt. We attribute these compositional features to interaction with a spreading ridge associated with a possible trench-ridge-trench triple junction along the Patton Escarpment from 18 to 16 Ma. This study suggests that evidence of ridge-trench interaction may be commonly preserved along submerged plate margins, in contrast to its more limited recognition and discussion in the literature based on exposed examples in Chile, Japan and Alaska.

We characterize the textural and geochemical features of ocean crustal zircon recovered from plagiogranite, evolved gabbro, and metamorphosed ultramafic host-rocks collected along present-day slow and ultraslow spreading mid-ocean ridges (MORs). The geochemistry of 267 zircon grains was measured by sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe-reverse geometry at the USGS-Stanford Ion Microprobe facility. Three types of zircon are recognized based on texture and geochemistry. Most ocean crustal zircons resemble young magmatic zircon from other crustal settings, occurring as pristine, colorless euhedral (Type 1) or subhedral to anhedral (Type 2) grains. In these grains, Hf and most trace elements vary systematically with Ti, typically becoming enriched with falling Ti-in-zircon temperature. Ti-in-zircon temperatures range from 1,040 to 660°C (corrected for a TiO2 ~ 0.7, a SiO2 ~ 1.0, pressure ~ 2 kbar); intra-sample variation is typically ~60-15°C. Decreasing Ti correlates with enrichment in Hf to ~2 wt%, while additional Hf-enrichment occurs at relatively constant temperature. Trends between Ti and U, Y, REE, and Eu/Eu* exhibit a similar inflection, which may denote the onset of eutectic crystallization; the inflection is well-defined by zircons from plagiogranite and implies solidus temperatures of ~680-740°C. A third type of zircon is defined as being porous and colored with chaotic CL zoning, and occurs in ~25% of rock samples studied. These features, along with high measured La, Cl, S, Ca, and Fe, and low (Sm/La)N ratios are suggestive of interaction with aqueous fluids. Non-porous, luminescent CL overgrowth rims on porous grains record uniform temperatures averaging 615 ± 26°C (2SD, n = 7), implying zircon formation below the wet-granite solidus and under water-saturated conditions. Zircon geochemistry reflects, in part, source region; elevated HREE coupled with low U concentrations allow effective discrimination of ~80% of zircon formed at modern MORs from zircon in continental crust. The geochemistry and textural observations reported here serve as an important database for comparison with detrital, xenocrystic, and metamorphosed mafic rock-hosted zircon populations to evaluate provenance.

Original geological, geophysical, lithological, mineralogical data on uplifts of the Central Atlantic are given in the book based on materials of Cruise 1 of the R/V Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov. Geological and geophysical studies include description of the obtained material and analysis of structural and morphological elements of the ocean floor. Results of lithological, petrochemical and geochemical studies were extremely innovative and develop a conceptual model. The latter include studies of petrochemical evolution of tholeiitic alkaline plate volcanism, large-scale hydrothermal transformation of basement rocks - palygorskitization, phosphatization and ferromanganese mineralization. Showing imposition Superposition of hydrogenic alteration on hydrothermally altered rocks and its role in Cenozoic history of sedimentation is shown.

We studied a unique chrysotile-antigorite serpentinite, drilled on Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 84 (Site 566) in the Guatemala forearc. Our in situ major and trace element data provide new constraints on possible reactions and associated trace element mobilisation during shallow serpentinite subduction. Chrysotile of the studied serpentinite, formed by the hydration of an upper mantle peridotite precursor, is partially replaced by antigorite (alone) which also occurs in 0.5 mm wide unoriented veins crosscutting the rock. Based on textural relationships and the P-T-X stability of the rock forming phases, the replacement of chrysotile by antigorite occurred at T < 300 °C, due to interaction between the chrysotile-serpentinite and an aqueous fluid. A comparison of the chemical compositions of reactant and product phases reveals that about 90% of the Cl, more than 80% of the B and about 50% of the Sr hosted originally by chrysotile was lost during fluid-assisted chrysotile-to-antigorite transformation and accompanying partial dehydration, and documents the much lower affinity of antigorite for trace element uptake than that of chrysotile. The fluid-assisted chrysotile-to-antigorite transformation and associated trace element loss documented here can occur in the shallow (< 30 km) region of subduction zones. This transformation decreases notably the Cl and B inventory of subducting serpentinites, which are regarded as one of the most important carriers of these elements into subduction zones. The evolution of serpentinites during initial subduction stages thus appears to be critical in the recycling of specific trace elements such as B or Cl from forearc to subarc depths.

Organic-rich diatomaceous muds from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 112 (offshore Peru) are the subject of a comprehensive organic diagenetic study covering the burial interval, <1 to >100 m. The organic matter has been classified in terms of its elemental, biochemical, and geochemical compositions. About 60% of the organic carbon in sediments from <1 m can be attributed to hydrolyzable, biochemical constituents, while at 22 m this figure decreased to 20%. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry chromatograms of these same sediments contain mainly hydrocarbons and nitrogenous compounds, with low amounts of other heteroatomic compounds, even though the total organic matter is rich in oxygen (about 35 atoms per 100 carbon atoms) and sulfur (1 to 5 atoms per 100 C atoms). Overall, the organic matter in these sediments, even at these shallow depths and young ages, has many of the geochemical features of far more deeply buried sediments, providing further strong evidence for the claim that "kerogen-formation" is a very early diagenetic process.

The island of Isla de los Estados is situated at 54.5°S, 64°W, east of Argentinian Tierra del Fuego, and is located in a sensitive geographic position in relation to the zonal circulation between Antarctica and South America. Its terrestrial records of the last deglaciation, recording atmospheric conditions but within an oceanic setting, can help to clarify changes of regional circulation patterns, both atmospheric and marine. Here, we present geochemical analyses from 16-10 ka cal BP of a peat core from Lago Galvarne Bog at the northern coast of the island, and a lake sediment core from Laguna Cascada 3 km further south. The data comprise TC, TN, loss on ignition analyses and continuous XRF scanning on both cores as well as age-depth modeling based on AMS-14C dating. Deglaciation and onset of peat formation in the coastal areas began before 16 ka cal BP followed by a rapid glacial retreat and the start of lacustrine sedimentation further inland. Data suggest initially windy conditions with permafrost succeeded by gradually warmer and wetter conditions until ca 14.5 ka cal BP. The warming trend slows down until ca 13.5 ka cal BP, followed by arid conditions culminating around 12.8 ka cal BP. Our data suggest fairly warm conditions and the establishment of denser peat and forest vegetation ca 10.6 ka cal BP, contemporaneous with the onset of the Antarctic thermal optimum. This indicates large-scale shifts in the placement of zonal flow and the Westerlies at the beginning of the Holocene.

George V Land (Antarctica) includes the boundary between Late Archean-Paleoproterozoic metamorphic terrains of the East Antarctic craton and the intrusive and metasedimentary rocks of the Early Paleozoic Ross-Delamerian Orogen. This therefore represents a key region for understanding the tectono-metamorphic evolution of the East Antarctic Craton and the Ross Orogen and for defining their structural relationship in East Antarctica, with potential implications for Gondwana reconstructions. In the East Antarctic Craton the outcrops closest to the Ross orogenic belt form the Mertz Shear Zone, a prominent ductile shear zone up to 5 km wide. Its deformation fabric includes a series of progressive, overprinting shear structures developed under different metamorphic conditions: from an early medium-P granulite-facies metamorphism, through amphibolite-facies to late greenschist-facies conditions. 40Ar-39Ar laserprobe data on biotite in mylonitic rocks from the Mertz Shear Zone indicate that the minimum age for ductile deformation under greenschist-facies conditions is 1502 ± 9 Ma and reveal no evidence of reactivation processes linked to the Ross Orogeny. 40Ar-39Ar laserprobe data on amphibole, although plagued by excess argon, suggest the presence of a ~1.7 Ga old phase of regional-scale retrogression under amphibolite-facies conditions. Results support the correlation between the East Antarctic Craton in the Mertz Glacier area and the Sleaford Complex of the Gawler Craton in southern Australia, and suggest that the Mertz Shear Zone may be considered a correlative of the Kalinjala Shear Zone. An erratic immature metasandstone collected east of Ninnis Glacier (~180 km east of the Mertz Glacier) and petrographically similar to metasedimentary rocks enclosed as xenoliths in Cambro-Ordovician granites cropping out along the western side of Ninnis Glacier, yielded detrital white-mica 40Ar-39Ar ages from ~530 to 640 Ma and a minimum age of 518 ± 5 Ma. This pattern compares remarkably well with those previously obtained for the Kanmantoo Group from the Adelaide Rift Complex of southern Australia, thereby suggesting that the segment of the Ross Orogen exposed east of the Mertz Glacier may represent a continuation of the eastern part of the Delamerian Orogen.

Lower Miocene basaltic glass spherules from DSDP Site 32 pelagic sediments in the eastern Pacific are compositionally diverse, and new analyses and interpretations have been added to those of earlier workers. The spherules are of titanian ferrobasalt which is compositionally similar to highly evolved abyssal basalts and to some oceanic island eruptives, and they were most likely shaped during intense lava fountaining during a number of separate eruptions. These eruptions tapped distinct but related magma batches in terms, for example, of distinctively high TiO2 and FeO* contents. Their age overlaps that of some of the eruptions of the Columbia River Plateau Basalts, but they are compositionally distinct from most of the latter basalts. Although about 15 m.y. old, they show little alteration. The low chlorine and sulfur contents compared to those of abyssal ferrobasalts are consistent with degassing prior to quenching during subaerial eruptions, and rule out production of the spherules by submarine fountaining. Lava fountaining alone is insufficient to account for the distance of about 100 km from even the closest possible seamount source. Instead, large phreatomagmatic eruption columns reaching at least 15 km and including lava fountaining immediately after the initial explosion are required. Alternatively, and deemed less likely, is their deposition by turbidites derived from Pioneer Seamount.

A geochemical, mineralogical, and isotopic database comprising 75 analyses of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 193 samples has been prepared, representing the variable dacitic volcanic facies and alteration types observed in drill core from the subsurface of the PACMANUS hydrothermal system (Table T1. The data set comprises major elements, trace and rare earth elements (REE), various volatiles (S, F, Cl, S, SO4, CO2, and H2O), and analyses of 18O and 86Sr/87Sr for bulk rock and mineral separates (anhydrite). Furthermore, normative mineral proportions have been calculated based on the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis (Table T2) using the SOLVER function of the Microsoft Excel program. Several of the samples analyzed consist of mesoscopically distinctive domains, and separate powders were generated to investigate these hand specimen-scale heterogeneities. Images of all the samples are collated in Figure F1, illustrating the location of each powder analyzed and documenting which measurements were performed.
