Dental implant is used to replace the natural dental root. The process to fix the dental implant in the maxillary bone needs a previous drilling operation. This machining operation involves the increasing of temperature in the drilled region which can reach values higher than 47°C and for this temperature is possible to occur the osseous necrosis [I]. The main goal of this work is to implement an optimization method to define the optimal drilling parameters that could minimize the drilling temperature. The proposal optimization method is the Taguchi method. This method has been used with success in machining processes optimization of metallic materials [2]. However, the Taguchi method is also used in medical applications, namely in dental medicine [3].

Benthic and planktonic 14C ages are presented for the last glacial termination from marine sediment core VM21-30 from 617 m in the eastern equatorial Pacific. The benthic-planktonic 14C age differences in the core increased to more than 6000 years between Heinrich 1 time and the end of the Younger Dryas period. Several replicated 14C ages on different benthic and planktonic species from the same samples within the deglacial section of the core indicate a minimal amount of bioturbation. Scanning electron microscopy reveals no evidence of calcite alteration or contamination. The oxygen isotope stratigraphy of planktonic and benthic foraminifera does not indicate anomalously old (glacial age) values, and there is no evidence of a large negative stable carbon isotope excursion in benthic foraminifera that would indicate input of old carbon from dissociated methane. It appears, therefore, that the benthic 14C excursion in this core is not an artifact of diagenesis, bioturbation, or a pulse of methane. A benthic D14C stratigraphy reconstructed from the 14C ages from the deglacial section of VM21-30 appears to match that of Baja margin core MV99-MC19/GC31/PC08 (705 m), but the magnitude of the low-14C excursion is much larger in the VM21-30 record. This would seem to imply that the VM21-30 core was closer to the source of 14C-depleted waters during the deglaciation, but the source of this CO2 remains elusive.

The core structure of a dislocation complex in SiGe/Si system composed of a perfect 60degrees dislocation and an extended 60 dislocation has been revealed at atomic level. This is attained by applying the image deconvolution technique in combination with dynamical diffraction effect correction to an image taken with a 200 kV field-emission high-resolution electron microscope. The possible configuration of the dislocation complex is analyzed and their Burgers vectors are determined. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The power required to operate large gyratory mills often exceeds 10 MW. Hence, optimisation of the power consumption will have a significant impact on the overall economic performance and environmental impact of the mineral processing plant. In most of the published models of tumbling mills (e.g. [Morrell, S., 1996. Power draw of wet tumbling mills and its relationship to charge dynamics, Part 2: An empirical approach to modelling of mill power draw. Trans. Inst. Mining Metall. (Section C: Mineral Processing Ext. Metall.) 105, C54-C62. Austin, L.G., 1990. A mill power equation for SAG mills. Miner. Metall. Process. 57-62]), the effect of lifter design and its interaction with mill speed and filling are not incorporated. Recent experience suggests that there is an opportunity for improving grinding efficiency by choosing the appropriate combination of these variables. However, it is difficult to experimentally determine the interactions of these variables in a full scale mill. Although some work has recently been published using DEM simulations, it was basically. limited to 2D. The discrete element code, Particle Flow Code 3D (PFC3D), has been used in this work to model the effects of lifter height (525 cm) and mill speed (50-90% of critical) on the power draw and frequency distribution of specific energy (J/kg) of normal impacts in a 5 m diameter autogenous (AG) mill. It was found that the distribution of the impact energy is affected by the number of lifters, lifter height, mill speed and mill filling. Interactions of lifter design, mill speed and mill filling are demonstrated through three dimensional distinct element methods (3D DEM) modelling. The intensity of the induced stresses (shear and normal) on lifters, and hence the lifter wear, is also simulated. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An assay using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS-MS) was developed for simultaneously determining concentrations of morphine, oxycodone, morphine-3-glucuronide, and noroxycodone, in 50 mul samples of rat serum. Deuterated (d(3)) analogues of each compound were used as internal standards. Samples were treated with acetonitrile to precipitate plasma proteins: acetonitrile was removed from the supernatant by centrifugal evaporation before analysis. Limits of quantitation (ng/ml) and their between-day accuracy and precision (%deviation and %CV) were-morphine, 3.8 (4.3% and 7.6%); morphine-3-glucuronide, 5.0 (4.5% and 2.9%); oxycodone, 4.5 (0.4% and 9.3%); noroxycodone, 5.0 (8.5% and 4.6%). Background: Written material is often inaccessible fro people with aphasia. The format of written material needs to be adapted to enable people with aphasia to read with understanding. Aims: This study aimed to further explore some issues raised in Rose, Worrall, and MacKenna (2003) concerning the effects of aphasia-friendly formats on the reading comprehension of people with aphasia. It was hypothesised that people with aphasia would comprehend significantly more paragraphs that were formatted in an aphasia-friendly manner than control paragraphs. This study also aimed to investigate if each single aspect of aphasia-friendly formatting (i.e., simplified vocabulary and syntax, large print, increased white spacem and pictures) used in isolation would result in increased comprehension compared to control paragraphs. Other aims were to compare the effect of aphasia-friendly fromatting with the effects of each single adaptation, and to investigate if the effects of aphasia-friendly formates were related to aphasia severity. Methods & Procedures: Participants with mild to moderately severe aphasia (N = 9) read a battery of 90 paragraphs and selected the best word of phrase from a choice of four to complete each paragraph. A linear mixed model (p < .05) was used to analyse the differences in reading comprehension with each paragraph fromat across three reading grade levels. Outcomes & Results: People with aphasia comprehended significantly more aphasia-friendly paragraphs than control paragraphs. They also comprehended significantly more paragraphs with each of the following single adaptations: simplified vocabulary and syntax, large ptint, and increased white spaces. Although people with aphasia tended to comprehend more paragraphs with pictures added than control paragraphs, this difference was not significant. No significant correlation between aphasia severity and the effect of aphasia-friendly formatting was found. Conclusion: This study supports the idea that aphasia-friendly formats increase the reading comprehension of people with aphasia. It suggests that adding pictures, particularly Clip Art pictures, may not significantly improve the reading the reading comprehension of people with aphasia. These findings have implications for all written communication with people with aphasia, both in the clinical setting and in the wider community. Applying these findings may enable people with aphasia to have equal access to written information and to participate in society.

Technological advances have brought about the ever-increasing utilisation of computer-assisted language learning ( CALL) media in the learning of a second language (L2). Computer-mediated communication, for example, provides a practical means for extending the learning of spoken language, a challenging process in tonal languages such as Chinese, beyond the realms of the classroom. In order to effectively improve spoken language competency, however, CALL applications must also reproduce the social interaction that lies at the heart of language learning and language use. This study draws on data obtained from the utilisation of CALL in the learning of L2 Chinese to explore whether this medium can be used to extend opportunities for rapport-building in language teaching beyond the face-to-face interaction of the classroom. Rapport's importance lies in its potential to enhance learning, motivate learners, and reduce learner anxiety. To date, CALL's potential in relation to this facet of social interaction remains a neglected area of research. The results of this exploratory study suggest that CALL may help foster learner-teacher rapport and that scaffolding, such as strategically composing rapport-fostering questions in sound-files, is conducive to this outcome. The study provides an instruction model for this application of CALL.
