The vibrational properties of the 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) molecule in interaction with gold were examined by a combined approach of FTIR measurements and density functional theory (DFT). A complete assignment of the 42 normal modes of MBI has been performed on the basis of DFT calculations at the B3PW91 level in complement to the Raman and FTIR spectra. Calculations demonstrated that, on the deprotonated MBI molecule, the negative charge is localized on the sulfur atom, favoring the formation of a gold-sulfur bond upon reaction of MBI with gold. This was confirmed by the very good agreement between the calculated spectrum and the experimental spectra of different gold-MBI compounds, indicating that the vibrational properties of adsorbed MBI are chiefly determined by the coordination through the sulfur atom. © 2006 American Chemical Society.

A combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the nature of the active form of gold in oxide-supported gold catalysts for the water gas shift reaction has been performed. In situ extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) experiments have shown that in the fresh catalysts the gold is in the form of highly dispersed gold ions. However, under water gas shift reaction conditions, even at temperatures as low as 100 degrees C, the evidence from EXAFS and XANES is only 14 consistent with rapid, and essentially complete, reduction of the gold to form metallic clusters containing about 50 atoms. The presence of Au-Ce distances in the EXAFS spectra, and the fact that about 15% of the gold atoms can be reoxidized after exposure to air at 150 degrees C, is indicative of a close interaction between a fraction (ca. 15%) of the gold atoms and the oxide support. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are entirely consistent with this model and suggest that an important aspect of the active and stable form of gold under water gas shift reaction conditions is the location of a partially oxidized gold (Audelta+) species at a cerium cation vacancy in the surface of the oxide support. It is found that even with a low loading gold catalysts (0.2%) the fraction of ionic gold under water gas shift conditions is below the limit of detection by XANES (<5%). It is concluded that under water gas shift reaction conditions the active form of gold comprises small metallic gold clusters in intimate contact with the oxide support.

Amphibian skin secretions are rich in antimicrobial peptides that act as important components of an innate immune system. Here, we describe a novel “shotgun” skin peptide precursor cloning technique that facilitates rapid access to these genetically encoded molecules and effects their subsequent identification and structural characterization from the secretory peptidome. Adopting this approach on a skin secretion-derived library from a hitherto unstudied Chinese species of frog, we identified a family of novel antimicrobial peptide homologs, named pelophylaxins, that belong to previously identified families (ranatuerins, brevinins and temporins) found predominantly in the skin secretions from frogs of the genus Rana. These data further substantiate the scientifically robust nature of applying parallel transcriptome and peptidome analyses on frog defensive skin secretions that can be obtained in a non-invasive, non-destructive manner. In addition, the present data illustrate that rapid structural characterization of frog skin secretion peptides can be achieved from an unstudied species without prior knowledge of primary structures of endogenous peptides.

The survival of family farming in British agriculture has long been a topic of interest for rural researchers and is undergoing something of a current renewal of interest. However, insights from feminist approaches remain underutilised despite the crucial role farming women continue to play in family farming. This paper addresses the unity of farm, family and business by interpreting it as a patriarchal â??way of lifeâ??. An ethnographic-informed repeated life history methodology is employed to study in detail the family members of seven farms in rural mid-Wales. Findings show that the recent survival of the family farms investigated has been heavily dependent upon compliance with a patriarchal ideology that demands women be â??as good as goldâ??. However, it is discovered that a new view of women is emerging in the world of British family farming, that of â??gold diggerâ??. Women entering relationships with farming men are increasingly being considered a threat to farm survival by virtue of their entitlements if the relationship breaks down. The necessity to study the intricacies of personal relationships in family farming has important implications for most future research into this form of agricultural business arrangement.

A series of thin films comprising gold nanorods embedded in an alumina matrix have been fabricated with lengths ranging from 75 to 330 nm. Their optical properties, expressed in terms of extinction - In(T), where T is optical transmittance, have been measured as a function of wavelength, rod length, angle of incidence, and incident polarization state. The results are compared to a Maxwell-Garnett based theory modified to take into account the strongly anisotropic nature of the medium. Transverse and longitudinal plasmon resonances are observed. The interaction between the nanorods leads to the splitting of the longitudinal resonance with the longer-wavelength resonance being forbidden for direct optical observations. The shorter-wavelength resonance related to the symmetric coupling between longitudinal plasma excitations in the nanorods depends on rod length, polarization state, and angle of incidence of the probing light. The impact of electron confinement on the optical properties of the gold rods is also seen and may be incorporated into the Maxwell-Garnett theory by restricting the mean free path of the conduction electrons to produce excellent agreement between observations and the complete theory. Annealing experiments that modify the physical structure of the gold confirm this conclusion.

The contribution of electron-phonon scattering and grain boundary scattering to the mid-IR (lambda = 3.392 mum) properties of An has been assessed by examining both bulk, single crystal samples-Au(1 1 1) and Au(1 1 0)-and thin film, polycrystalline An samples at 300 K and 100 K by means of surface plasmon polariton excitation. The investigation constitutes a stringent test for the in-vacuo Otto-configuration prism coupler used to perform the measurements, illustrating its strengths and limitations. Analysis of the optical response is guided by a physically based interpretation of the Drude model. Relative to the reference case of single crystal Au at 100 K (epsilon = - 568 + i17.5), raising the temperature to 300 K causes increased electron-phonon scattering that accounts for a reduction of similar to40 nm in the electron mean free path. Comparison of a polycrystalline sample to the reference case determines a mean free path due to grain boundary scattering of similar to 17 nm, corresponding to about half the mean grain size as determined from atomic force microscopy and indicating a high reflectance coefficient for the An grain boundaries. An analysis combining consideration of grain boundary scattering and the inclusion of a small percentage of voids in the polycrystalline film by means of an effective medium model indicates a value for the grain boundary reflection coefficient in the range 0.55-0.71. Arrays of nickel and gold nanorods have been grown on glass and silicon substrates using porous alumina templates of less than 500 nm thickness. A method is demonstrated for varying the diameter of the nanorods whilst keeping the spacing constant. Optical extinction spectra for the gold nanorods show two distinct maxima associated with the transverse and longitudinal axes of the rods. Adding small quantities of oxygen to the aluminium before anodization is found to improve the sharpness of the extinction peaks. The spectral position of the longitudinal peak is shown to be sensitive to the nanorod diameter for constant length and spacing. For the nickel nanorods it is shown that the magnetic properties are governed by both interactions between the wires and shape anisotropy.

CO oxidation on TiO2 supported Au has been studied using density functional theory calculations. Important catalytic roles of the oxide have been identified: (i) CO oxidation occurs at the interface between Au and the oxide with a very small barrier; and (ii) O-2 adsorption at the interface is the key step in the reaction. The physical origin of the oxide promotion effect has been further investigated: The oxide enhances electron transfer from the Au to the antibonding states of O-2, giving rise to (i) strong ionic bonding between the adsorbed O-2, Au, and the Ti cation; and (ii) a significant activation of O-2 towards CO oxidation.
