The spotted gum species complex represents a group of four eucalypt hardwood taxa that have a native range that spans the east coast of Australia, with a morphological cline from Victoria to northern Queensland. Of this group, Corymbia citriodora subsp. variegata (CCV) is widespread in south-eastern Queensland and northern New South Wales. It is currently the most commonly harvested native hardwood in Queensland. However, little basic knowledge of the reproductive biology of the species is available to inform genetic improvement and resource management programmes. Here we take an integrative approach, using both field and molecular data, to identify ecological factors important to mating patterns in native populations of CCV. Field observation of pollinator visitation and flowering phenology of 20 trees showed that foraging behaviour of pollinator guilds varies depending on flowering phenology and canopy structure. A positive effect of tree mean flowering effort was found on insect visitation, while bat visitation was predicted by tree height and by the number of trees simultaneously bearing flowers. Moreover, introduced honeybees were observed frequently, performing 73% of detected flower visits. Conversely, nectar-feeding birds and mammals were observed sporadically with lorikeets and honeyeaters each contributing to 11% of visits. Fruit bats, represented solely by the grey-headed flying fox, performed less than 2% of visits. Genotyping at six microsatellite markers in 301 seeds from 17 families sampled from four of Queensland's native forests showed that CCV displays a mixed-mating system that is mostly outcrossing (tm = 0.899 ± 0.021). Preferential effective pollination from near-neighbours was detected by means of maximum-likelihood paternity analysis with up to 16% of reproduction events resulting from selfing. Forty to 48% of fertilising pollen was also carried from longer distance (>60 m). Marked differences in foraging behaviour and visitation frequency between observed pollinator guilds suggests that the observed dichotomy of effective pollen movement in spotted gums may be due to frequent visit from introduced honeybees favouring geitonogamy and sporadic visits from honeyeaters and fruit bats resulting in potential long-distance pollinations.

Eighty six full-sib Corymbia F1 hybrid families (crosses between C. torelliana and four spotted gum taxa: C. citriodora subsp. variegata, C. citriodora subsp. citriodora, C. henryi and C. maculata), were planted in six trials across six disparate sites in south-eastern Queensland to evaluate their productivity and determine their potential utility for plantation forestry. In each trial, the best-growing 20% of hybrid families grew significantly faster (P=0.05) than open-pollinated seedlots of the parent species Corymbia citriodora subsp. variegata, ranging from 107% to 181% and 127% to 287% of the height and diameter respectively. Relative performance of hybrid families growing on more than one site displayed consistency in ranking for growth across sites and analysis showed low genotype-by-environment interaction. Heritability estimates based on female and male parents across two sites at age six years for height and diameter at breast height, were high (0.62±0.28 to 0.64±0.35 and 0.31±0.21 to 0.69±0.37 respectively), and low to moderate (0.03±0.04 to 0.33±0.22) for stem straightness, branch size, incidence of ramicorns, and frost and disease resistance traits at ages one to three years. The proportion of dominance variance for height and diameter had reduced to zero by age six years. Based on these promising results, further breeding and pilot-scale family forestry and clonal forestry deployment is being undertaken. These results have also provided insights regarding the choice of a future hybrid breeding strategy.

Morinda citrifolia (noni) grows widely throughout the Pacific and is native to Australia. It is a source of traditional medicine amongst Coastal Aboriginal Communities in Cape York, the Pacific Islands and South East Asia, and in recent years has experienced significant economic growth worldwide through a variety of health and cosmetic claims. The largest markets for noni are North America, Europe, Japan, Mexico, Asia and Australia with the worldwide market for these products estimated at US$400 million.

This report details the results of research into organic production of prawns in Australia. This has involved activities and experiments over two years at several sites and using a multidisciplinary approach. This includes farm trials at an inland demonstration prawn farm which solely utilises saline bore water, sample collection from two commercial prawn farms in coastal regions of south-eastern Queensland, replicated feed trials at one of DPI&F’s aquaculture research stations, specified feed manufacture at the laboratories of University of Queensland, and packaging and product storage trials and food analyses at two of DPI&F’s food technology laboratories. This work was designed to investigate and assist in the possible adoption of organic procedures by the Australian prawn farming industry. The import from Asia of cheaply produced prawns has forced all Australian prawn farmers to review their marketing procedures. Additionally investors are becoming increasingly concerned at the prospects for the expansion of this industry in Australia. Since the competition of seafood products in the marketplace is increasing on a global basis, alternate products are being investigated by those wishing to maintain and/or grow their market share. The premium paid for organic food products would hopefully provide an economic incentive for farmers to convert to organic production systems, with an added advantage that the standards that apply have beneficial implications also for the social and environmental practices of industry.

The results of research into the water relations and irrigation requirements of lychee are collated and reviewed. The stages of plant development are summarised, with an emphasis on factors influencing the flowering process. This is followed by reviews of plant water relations, water requirements, water productivity and, finally, irrigation systems. The lychee tree is native to the rainforests of southern China and northern Vietnam, and the main centres of production remain close to this area. In contrast, much of the research on the water relations of this crop has been conducted in South Africa, Australia and Israel where the tree is relatively new. Vegetative growth occurs in a series of flushes. Terminal inflorescences are borne on current shoot growth under cool (<15 °C), dry conditions. Trees generally do not produce fruit in the tropics at altitudes below 300 m. Poor and erratic flowering results in low and irregular fruit yields. Drought can enhance flowering in locations with dry winters. Roots can extract water from depths greater than 2 m. Diurnal trends in stomatal conductance closely match those of leaf water status. Both variables mirror changes in the saturation deficit of the air. Very little research on crop water requirements has been reported. Crop responses to irrigation are complex. In areas with low rainfall after harvest, a moderate water deficit before floral initiation can increase flowering and yield. In contrast, fruit set and yield can be reduced by a severe water deficit after flowering, and the risk of fruit splitting increased. Water productivity has not been quantified. Supplementary irrigation in South-east Asia is limited by topography and competition for water from the summer rice crop, but irrigation is practised in Israel, South Africa, Australia and some other places. The Old World screwworm (OWS) fly, Chrysomya bezziana, is a serious pest of livestock, wildlife and humans in tropical Africa, parts of the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, south-east Asia and Papua New Guinea. Although to date Australia remains free of OWS flies, an incursion would have serious economic and animal welfare implications. For these reasons Australia has an OWS fly preparedness plan including OWS fly surveillance with fly traps. The recent development of an improved OWS fly trap and synthetic attractant and a specific and sensitive real-time PCR molecular assay for the detection of OWS flies in trap catches has improved Australia's OWS fly surveillance capabilities. Because all Australian trap samples gave negative results in the PCR assay, it was deemed necessary to include a positive control mechanism to ensure that fly DNA was being successfully extracted and amplified and to guard against false negative results. A new non-competitive internal amplification control (IAC) has been developed that can be used in conjunction with the OWS fly PCR assay in a multiplexed single-tube reaction. The multiplexed assay provides an indicator of the performance of DNA extraction and amplification without greatly increasing labour or reagent costs. The fly IAC targets a region of the ribosomal 16S mitochondrial DNA which is conserved across at least six genera of commonly trapped flies. Compared to the OWS fly assay alone, the multiplexed OWS fly and fly IAC assay displayed no loss in sensitivity or specificity for OWS fly detection. The multiplexed OWS fly and fly IAC assay provides greater confidence for trap catch samples returning negative OWS fly results. © 2014 International Atomic Energy Agency.

In 2011, more than 75,000 people died in road crashes in the ten member countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and many times this number sustained long term injuries. Improving road safety outcomes in ASEAN is not only important for the welfare and economic benefit of these countries, but given that a significant proportion of the world's population lives in ASEAN, it will strongly influence whether the aims of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety and the Sustainable Development Goals are reached. Following the ASEAN Senior Transport Officials Meeting in May 2011, the Secretariat requested the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to provide assistance to improve road safety in ASEAN. In response, ADB, funded by the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction, has funded a package of action to improve road safety in ASEAN, including the development of a new regional road safety strategy. The diversity of the member nations of ASEAN poses significant challenges for the development of the strategy. For example, the road fatality rates per 100,000 population in Malaysia and Thailand are about 5 times greater than in Singapore. In addition, the importance of particular road safety issues varies across the ASEAN countries and for countries which are undergoing rapid motorization, the order of importance may change over the life of the strategy. The development of the ASEAN Regional Road Safety Strategy has adopted the five pillars of road safety of the UN Decade of Action but focused on those aspects which are most relevant at the regional level and where a regional approach will support and facilitate actions taken by individual countries. A draft ASEAN Regional Road Safety Strategy document has been prepared and consultation will further refine its directions and contents. The paper will describe the processes undertaken to identify issues and solutions, the measurement of road safety maturity and behavioural risk factors, and the overall structure and themes of the strategy.

Radiant spring frosts occurring during reproductive developmental stages can result in catastrophic yield loss for wheat producers. To better understand the spatial and temporal variability of frost, the occurrence and impact of frost events on rain-fed wheat production was estimated across the Australian wheatbelt for 1957–2013 using a 0.05 ° gridded weather data set. Simulated yield outcomes at 60 key locations were compared with those for virtual genotypes with different levels of frost tolerance. Over the last six decades, more frost events, later last frost day, and a significant increase in frost impact on yield were found in certain regions of the Australian wheatbelt, in particular in the South-East and West. Increasing trends in frost-related yield losses were simulated in regions where no significant trend of frost occurrence was observed, due to higher mean temperatures accelerating crop development and causing sensitive post-heading stages to occur earlier, during the frost risk period. Simulations indicated that with frost-tolerant lines the mean national yield could be improved by up to 20 through (i) reduced frost damage (~10 improvement) and (ii) the ability to use earlier sowing dates (adding a further 10 improvement). In the simulations, genotypes with an improved frost tolerance to temperatures 1 °C lower than the current 0 °C reference provided substantial benefit in most cropping regions, while greater tolerance (to 3 °C lower temperatures) brought further benefits in the East. The results indicate that breeding for improved reproductive frost tolerance should remain a priority for the Australian wheat industry, despite warming climates.

Esiselvityksen tarkoituksena on esittää arvio Luoteis-Venäjän ja Kaakkois-Suomen integraation tämänhetkisestä tilanteesta sekä keskeisimmistä edellytyksistä ja esteistä. Raportin ensimmäisessä osassa käsitellään kohdealueiden taustaa, toisessa osassa integroitumisen edellytyksiä ja esteitä sekä kolmannessa osassa Kaakkois-Suomen mahdollisuuksia ja vetovoimatekijöitä. Luoteis-Venäjällä on ollut suuri merkitys Kaakkois-Suomen kehityksessä ja se nähdään edelleen suurimpana mahdollisuutena minkä suhteen alueella voidaan kehittyä. Suurimmiksi ongelmiksi haastattelujen perusteella nousivat bisnekseen itseensä perustuvat ongelmat sekä resurssien puute. Lisäksi kykenemättömyys sopeutua paikalliseen kulttuuriin, kielitaidon ja kulttuurintuntemuksen puute, asenneongelmat sekä Venäjällä kasvava protektionismi ja maan oikeusvaltiostatuksen puute nähtiin suurena esteenä. Sopimukset sekä Venäjällä toimiminen niin liiketoiminnassa kuin koulutus- ja tutkimussektorilla ovat saaneet mystisiä piirteitä. Integraation edellytyksinä esiin nousivat halu kansainvälistyä sekä valmius panostaa ajallisesti ja rahallisesti. Muut edellytykset riippuvat valitusta toimintamallista. Toimintaympäristöön integroitumisen edellytyksenä pidettiin toimivia suhteita paikallishallintoon ja henkilökunnan venäläistämistä. Suomalaisten menestymisen edellytyksiä pidettiin hyvänä. Koulutus- ja tutkimussektorilla esiin nousivat perusrahoituksen puuttuminen, Suomi-keskeisyys sekä asenneongelmat. Venäläinen partneri on kuitenkin olennainen ja yhteistoiminnan edellytyksenä pidettiin verkostojen luomista. Koulutusviennin osalta esiin nousivat johtamis- ja projektihallinnon tarjonta. Ongelmana nähtiin yliopistojen välinen kilpailu ja toiveena oli parempi yhteistoiminta korkeakoulujen kesken. Julkisen sektorin puolella suurimmaksi ongelmaksi nousivat toimijoiden suuri määrä sekä niiden välinen kilpailu Kaakkois-Suomessa ja Luoteis-Venäjällä. Myös Kouvolan ja Kotkan sekä rautatien ja E18-tien välinen kilpailu haittaavat alueen kehitystä. Lisäksi alueelta puuttuu poliittinen omistajuus asialle sekä vahva keulakuva. Integraation tulisi toteutua julkisen sektorin ja yritysten yhteistyönä. Valtiolta toivottiin viisumikysymyksen pikaista ratkaisua, eikä viisumin poistumisen mahdollisia negatiivisia vaikutuksia pidetty suurena ongelmana. Kymenlaakson rakennemuutos nähtiin mieluummin mahdollisuutena kuin haittana. Sen sijaan yliopiston puute luo leiman alueelle, ja LUT:n vaikutusta toivottiin koko Kaakkois-Suomeen. Alueen infran todettiin olevan toimiva ja kehittämiseen kaivattiin aloitteellisuutta sekä nopeita toimia. Logistiikkaan pidettiin Kaakkois-Suomen vahvuutena, mutta liiallisen keskittymisen rautateihin tai satamiin nähtiin hidastavan kehitystä. Toimijoiden toivottiin yhdistyvän ja muodostavan ketjuja sekä keskittyvän alueen omiin vahvuuksiin, joista toivottiin selvitystä. Alueen kehittämisen kannalta esiin nousi vaatimuksia korkeamasta palvelutasosta sekä kielen ja kulttuurin tuntemuksen lisäämisestä. Erityisesti matkailun alalle sekä kulttuurivaihtoon kaivattiin kehitystä, isoja hankkeita ja rajaseudun sekä omaa brändiä. Lisäksi Lappeenrannan lentokenttää ja nopeaa junayhteyttä tulisi hyödyntää enemmän, sekä panostaa matkailijoiden opastukseen. Alueen vetovoimatekijöinä nähtiin erilaiset terveys-, hoito- ja kuntoutuspalvelut, sekä huoltotoiminnot. Paperiteollisuuden puolella tulisi yhdistää ekologia, ekonomia ja teknologia sekä saada uusia innovaatioita. Lisäksi Kaakkois-Suomessa tulisi keskittyä logistiikkaan, digitaaliseen viestintään, uusiutuviin energioihin sekä tietointensiiviseen työhön. Alueen venäläisistä yrityksistä ja mahdollisista investointikohteista kaivattiin lisäselvityksiä. Integroituminen yhteiskuntaan vaatii poikkihallinnollisia toimita ja kielikoulutuksen aikaista aloittamista. Maakuntaliiton panostusta toivottiin erityisesti suhteiden luomiseen Suomessa ja Venäjällä, alueen logistiikan painopistealueiden määrittelemiseen sekä kulttuurisen integraation huomioimiseen strategioissaan.

A new species of lygosomatine scincid lizard is described from the sacred forests of Mawphlang, in Meghalaya, northeastern India. Sphenomorphus apalpebratus sp. nov. possesses a spectacle or brille, an unusual feature within the Scincidae, and a first for the paraphyletic genus Sphenomorphus. The new species is compared with other members of the genus to which it is here assigned, as well as to members of the lygosomatine genera Lipinia and Scincella from mainland India, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and south-east Asia, to which it also bears resemblance. The new taxon is diagnosable in exhibiting the following combination of characters: small body size (SVL to 42.0 mm); moveable eyelids absent; auricular opening scaleless, situated in a shallow depression; dorsal scales show a line of demarcation along posterior edge of ventral pes; midbody scale rows 27-28; longitudinal scale rows between parietals and base of tail 62-64; lamellae under toe IV 8-9; supraoculars five; supralabials 5-6; infralabials 4-5; subcaudals 92; and dorsum golden brown, except at dorsal margin of lateral line, which is lighter, with four faintly spotted lines, two along each side of vertebral row of scales, that extend to tail base. The new species differs from its congeners in the lack of moveable eyelids, a character shared with several distantly related scincid genera.

Sustainability has emerged as one of the important planning concepts from its beginnings in economics and ecological thinking, and has widely been applied to assessing urban development. Different methods, techniques and instruments for urban sustainability assessment that help determine how cities can become more sustainable have emerged over a period of time. Among these, indicator-based approaches contribute to building of sustainable self-regulated systems that integrate development and environment protection. Hence, these provide a solid foundation for decision-making at all levels and are being increasingly used. The present paper builds on the background of the available literature and suggests the need for benchmarking indicator-based approach in a given urban area and incorporating various local issues, thus enhancing the long-term sustainability of cities which can be developed by introducing sustainability indicators into the urban planning process. The venom of Conus figulinus, a vermivorous cone snail, found in the south east coast of India, has been studied in an effort to identify novel peptide toxins. The amino acid sequences of seven peptides have been established using de novo mass spectrometric based sequencing methods. Among these, three peptides belong to the M-Superfamily conotoxins, namely, Fi3a, Fi3b, and Fi3c, and one that belongs to the T-Superfamily, namely, Fi5a. The other three peptides are contryphans, namely, contryphans fib, fic, and fid. Of these Fi3b, Fi3c, Fi5a, and contryphan fib are novel and are reported for the first time from venom of C.figulinus. The details of the sequencing methods and the relationship of these peptides with other M'-Superfamily conotoxins from the fish hunting and mollusk hunting clades are discussed. Amphibians exhibit extraordinarily diverse sets of reproductive strategies among vertebrates. Understanding life history strategies in an evolutionary framework is lacking for many amphibian species in the tropics. Here, we report a novel reproductive mode where adult frogs enter hollow internodes of bamboo via a small opening, deposit direct developing eggs, and provide parental care. This behaviour is observed in two species of the frog genus Raorchestes. The first description of this unique life history and details of nest site characteristics and embryo development are provided along with ecological comparisons. Evolution of novel reproductive modes and parental care are discussed in context of natural selection. Dearth of natural history information on amphibians in the Western Ghats and much of the South-East Asian region is highlighted with suggestions for further studies.(c) 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 114, 1-11.
