The structure and magnetic properties of the RCo5Ga7 (R = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er) compounds with the ScFe6Ga6-type structure have been studied. The stability of RCo5Ga7 is closely related with the ratio of the metal radii R-RE/R-(Co,R-Ga). With R-RE/R-(Co,R-Ga) less than or equal to 1.36, the compounds can be stabilized in the ScFe6Ga6-type structure. The lattice of RCo5Ga7 shrinks as the atomic order of R increases, and it is consistent with the lanthanide contraction. The structure analysis based on X-ray diffraction patterns reveals that in the orthorhombic RCo5Ga7 (Immm), R occupies the 2a site, and Co enters into the 8k and the 4h sites, and Ga is at the 4e, 4f, 4g, 4h and 8k sites. The interatomic distances and the coordination numbers of RCo5Ga7 are provided from the refinement results. The short interatomic distance (less than 2.480 Angstrom) between the Co ions results in the negative magnetic interaction, which does not favor ferromagnetic ordering. The magnetic moment of YCo5Ga7 is absent, and RCo5Ga7 (R = Tb, Dy, Ho and Er) may have long-range magnetic ordering with the paramagnetic Curie temperature lower than 5 K. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. A kind of hydrogenated diphasic, silicon films has been prepared by a new regime of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) in the region adjacent to the phase transition from amorphous to crystalline state. The photoelectronic and microstructural properties of the films have been investigated by the constant photocurrent method (CPM), Raman scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Our experimental results and corresponding analyses showed that the diphasic films, incorporated with a subtle boron compensation, could gain both the fine photosensitivity and high stability, provided the crystalline fraction (f) was controlled in the range of 0 < f < 0.3. When compared with the conventional hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H), the diphasic films are more ordered and robust in the microstructure, and have a less clustered phase in the Si-H bond configurations. The increased emphasis on sub-micron CMOS/SOS devices has placed a demand for high quality thin silicon on sapphire (SOS) films with thickness of the order 100-200 nm. It is demonstrated that the crystalline quality of as-grown thin SOS films by the CVD method can be greatly improved by solid phase epitaxy (SPE) process: implantation of self-silicon ions and subsequent thermal annealing. Subsequent regrowth of this amorphous layer leads to a greater improvement in silicon layer crystallinity and channel carrier mobility, evidenced, respectively, by double crystal X-ray diffraction and electrical measurements. We concluded that the thin SPE SOS films are suitable for application to high-performance CMOS circuitry. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A seven-state phase frequency detector (S.S PFD) is proposed for fast-locking charge pump based phase-locked loops (CPPLLs) in this paper. The locking time of the PLL can be significantly reduced by using the seven-state PFD to inject more current into the loop filter. In this stage, the bandwidth of the PLL is increased or decreased to track the phase difference of the reference signal and the feedback signal. The proposed architecture is realized in a standard 0.35 mu m 2P4M CMOS process with a 3.3V supply voltage. The locking time of the proposed PLL is 1.102 mu s compared with the 2.347 mu s of the PLL based on continuous-time PFD and the 3.298 mu s of the PLL based on the pass-transistor tri-state PFD. There are 53.05% and 66.59% reductions of the locking time. The simulation results and the comparison with other PLLs demonstrate that the proposed seven-state PFD is effective to reduce locking time.

Two series of films has been prepared by using a new regime of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) in the region adjacent to the phase transition from amorphous to crystalline state. The photoelectronic properties of the films have been investigated as a function of crystalline fraction. In comparison with typical a-Si:H, these diphasic films with a crystalline fraction less than 0.3 show a similar optical absorption coefficient, higher mobility life-time product ( LT) and higher stability upon light soaking. By using the diphasic nc-Si/a-Si films as the intrinsic layer, a p-i-n junction solar cell has been prepared with an initial efficiency of 9. 10 % and a stabilized efficiency of 8.56 % (AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm(2)).

Chemically vapour deposited silicon on sapphire (SOS) films 0.25 mu m thick were implanted with Si-28(+) and recrystallized in solid phase by furnace annealing (FA) and IR rapid thermal annealing (RTA) in our laboratory. An improvement in crystalline quality can be obtained using both annealing procedures. After FA, it is hard to retain the intrinsic high resistivity value(10(4)-10(5) Ohm cm) observed in as-grown SOS films, so the improvement process cannot be put to practical use effectively. However, it is demonstrated that by properly adjusting the implantation and RTA conditions, significant improvements in both film quality and film autodoping can be accomplished. This work describes a modified double solid phase epitaxy process in which the intrinsic high resistivities of the as grown SOS films are retained. The mechanism of suppression of Al autodoping is discussed.

CMOS/SOS devices have lower carriers mobility and higher channel leakage current than bulk silicon CMOS devices. These mainly results from the defects of heteroepitaxial silicon film, especially from the defects near Si-Sapphire interface. This paper describes the experiment results of CMOS/SOS devices characteristics improved by a better epitaxial silicon quality which is obtained by a modified solid phase epitaxy.

Lanthanum magnesium hexaalumminate (LMA) is an important candidate for thermal barrier coatings due to its thermal stability and low thermal conductivity. On the other hand, laser glazing method can potentially make thermal barrier coatings impermeable, resistant to corrosion on the surface and porous at bulk. LMA powder was synthesized at 1600 degrees C by solid-state reaction, pressed into tablet and laser glazed with a 5-kW continuous wave CO2 laser.

Strings of interconnected hollow carbon nanoparticles with porous shells were prepared by simple heat-treatments of a mixture of resorcinol-formaldehyde gel and transition-metal salts. The sample was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption. Results show that the sample consisted of relatively uniform hollow particles with sizes ranging from 70 to 80 nm forming a strings-of-pearls-like nanostructure. The material with porous shells possessed well-developed graphitic structure with an interlayer (d(002)) spacing of 0.3369 nm and the stack height of the graphite crystallites of 9 nm.

An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor based on Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)-graphene-Nafion composite film was developed. The graphene sheet was produced by chemical conversion of graphite, and was characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The introduction of conductive graphene into Nafion not only greatly facilitates the electron transfer of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), but also dramatically improves the long-term stability of the sensor by inhibiting the migration of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) into the electrochemically inactive hydrophobic region of Nafion. The ECL sensor gives a good linear range over 1 x 10(-7) to 1 x 10(-4) M with a detection limit of 50 nM towards the determination of tripropylamine (TPA), comparable to that obtained by Nafion-CNT.

A series of NIR organic chromophores with donor-pi-acceptor-pi-donor structure are synthesized. Good thermal stability and strong photoluminescence in solid state render them suitable for application in light-emitting diodes. Exclusive near-infrared emission at 1080 nm with external quantum efficiency of 0.28% is obtained from the nondoped OLEDs. The longest electroluminescence wave-length is 1220 nm.

Polyethyleneimine-functionalized platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) with excellent electrochemiluminescence (ECL) properties were synthesized and applied to the amplified analysis of biomolecules. These particles were prepared at room temperature, with hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (HBPEI) as the stabilizer. The UV/Vis absorption spectra and transmission electron microscopy images clearly confirmed the formation of monodisperse PtNPs. Such particles proved to possess high stability against salt-induced aggregation, enabling them to be employed even under high-salt conditions. Owing to the existence of many tertiary amine groups, these particles exhibited excellent ECL behavior in the presence of tris(2.2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II). An HBPEI-coated particle possessed an ECL activity that was at least 60 times higher than that of a tripropylamine molecule. Furthermore, these particles could be immobilized on the 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-treated quartz substrates to amplify the binding sites for carboxyl groups. Through this approach, PtNPs were applied to the amplified analysis of the hemin/G-quadruplex DNAzyme by using the luminol/H2O2 chemiluminescence method.

A new vinyl acyl azide monomer, 4-(azidocarbonyl) phenyl methacrylate, has been synthesized and characterized by NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The thermal stability of the new monomer has been investigated with FTIR and thermal gravimetry/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), and the monomer has been demonstrated to be stable below 50 degrees C in the solid state. The copolymerizations of the new monomer with methyl acrylate have been carried out at room temperature under Co-60 gamma-ray irradiation in the presence of benzyl 1-H-imidazole-1-carbodithioate. The results show that the polymerizations bear all the characteristics of controlled/living free-radical polymerizations, such as the molecular weight increasing linearly with the monomer conversion, the molecular weight distribution being narrow (< 1.20), and a linear relationship existing between In([M](0)/[M]) and the polymerization time. The data from H-1 NMR and FTIR confirm that no change in the acyl azide groups has occurred in the polymerization process and that acyl azide copolymers have been obtained. The thermal stability of the polymers has also been investigated with TG/DTA and FTIR.

High-performance polyimide fibers possess man), excellent properties, e.g., outstanding thermal stability and mechanical properties and excellent radiation resistant and electrical properties. However, the preparation of fibers with good mechanical properties is very difficult. In this report, a biphenvl polyimide from 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and 4,4'-oxydianiline is synthesized in p-chlorophenol by one-step polymerization. The solution is spun into a coagulation bath of water and alcohol via dry-jet wet-spinning technology. Then, the fibers are drawn in two heating tubes. Thermal gravimetric analysis, thermal mechanical analysis, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) are performed to study the properties of the fibers. The results show that the fibers have a good thermal stability at a temperature of more than 400degreesC. The linear coefficient of thermal expansion is negative in the solid state and the glass transition temperature is about 265degreesC. DMA spectra indicate that the tandelta of the fibers has three transition peaks, namely, alpha, beta, and gamma transition. The alpha and gamma transition temperature, corresponding to the end-group motion and glass transition, respectively, extensively depends on the applied frequency, while the beta transition does not.
