Reliable spectral analysis is only achieved if the spectrum is thoroughly investigated in regard to all hidden and overlapped peaks. This paper describes the steps undertaken to find and separate such peaks in the range of 3000 to 4000 cm(-1) in the case of three different infrared absorption spectra of the glass surface of hydrolyzed silica optical fibers. Peak finding was done by the analysis of the second and fourth derivatives of the digital data, coupled with the available knowledge of infrared spectroscopy of silica-water interaction in the investigated range. Peak separation was accomplished by curve fitting with four different models. The model with the best fit was described by a sum of pure Gaussian peaks. Shoulder limit and detection limit maps were used to validate the revealed spectral features.

A 160 mm bore, 7 T split-pair magnet was constructed and tested aiming to mineral processing through HGMS (high gradient magnetic separation) or HCMS (helical channel magnetic separation.) This work describes the design and test results of the pair of coils operating under current in parallel mode. In the case of antiparallel current mode large repulsive force between coils is generated and a strong magnetic field gradient outside the magnet is created. A continuous magnetic separation system made with a helical channel magnetic separator for application in TiO2 processing is analysed.

We present first-principles calculations of the thermodynamic and electronic properties of the zinc-blende ternary InxGa1-xN. InxAl1-xN, BxGa1-xN, and BxAl1-xN alloys. They are based on a generalized quasi-chemical approximation and a pseudopotential-plane-wave method. T-x phase diagrams for the alloys are obtained, We show that due to the large difference in interatomic distances between the binary compounds a significant phase miscibility gap for the alloys is found. In particular for the InxGa1-xN alloy, we show also experimental results obtained from X-ray and resonant Raman scattering measurements, which indicate the presence of an In-rich phase with x approximate to 0.8. For the boron-containing alloy layers we found a very high value for the critical temperature for miscibility. similar to9000 K. providing an explanation for the difficulties encountered to grow these materials with higher boron content. The influence of a biaxial strain on phase diagrams, energy gaps and gap bowing of these alloys is also discussed. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

We study the problem of covariant separation between first and second class constraints for the D = 10 Brink-Schwarz superparticle. Opposite to the supersymmetric light-cone frame separation, we show here that there is a Lorentz covariant way to identify the second class constraints such that, however, supersymmetry is broken. Consequences for the D = 10 superstring are briefly discussed.

A pressed pellet of CIO (-)(4) poly (3-methylthiophene) (P3MT) was heated for two hours at 85 degrees C and suddenly dropped in liquid nitrogen. A change was observed around 220 K in the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectra when the sample was slowly cooled from room temperature. ESR line asymmetry parameter (A/B) showed two spatially separated phases. One was identified as a small metallic-like phase. The other phase, the larger one, makes a transition to a semiconducting Charge-Density Wave (CDW) state.

High-speed counter-current chromatography was applied to the preparative separation and purification of naphthopyranone glycosides from a crude 70% ethanolic extract of the capitula of Paepalanthus microphyllus. The solvent system used was composed of water-ethanol-ethyl acetate-hexane (10:4:10:4, v/v). This technique led to the separation of four different naphthopyranone glycosides in pure form in only 7 h. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The main properties of realistic models for manganites are studied using analytic mean-field approximations and computational numerical methods, focusing on the two-orbital model with electrons interacting through Jahn-Teller (JT) phonons and/or Coulombic repulsions. Analyzing the model including both interactions by the combination of the mean-field approximation and the exact diagonalization method, it is argued that the spin-charge-orbital structure in the insulating phase of the purely JT-phononic model with a large Hund couphng J(H) is not qualitatively changed by the inclusion of the Coulomb interactions. As an important application of the present mean-held approximation, the CE-type antiferromagnetic state, the charge-stacked structure along the z axis, and (3x(2) - r(2))/(3y(2) - r(2))-type orbital ordering are successfully reproduced based on the JT-phononic model with large JH for the half-doped manganite, in agreement with recent Monte Carlo simulation results. Topological arguments and the relevance of the Heisenberg exchange among localized t(2g) spins explains why the inclusion of the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction does not destroy the charge stacking structure. It is also verified that the phase-separation tendency is observed both in purely JT-phononic (large JH) and purely Coulombic models in the vicinity of the hole undoped region, as long as realistic hopping matrices are used. This highlights the qualitative similarities of both approaches and the relevance of mixed-phase tendencies in the context of manganites. In addition, the rich and complex phase diagram of the two-orbital Coulombic model in one dimension is presented. Our results provide robust evidence that Coulombic and JT-phononic approaches to manganites are not qualitatively different ways to carry out theoretical calculations, but they share a variety of common features.

In this work, we investigated the formation of porous silica matrix obtained by hydrothermal treatment under saturated steam condition from Pyrex (R) glass. This investigation was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) and Raman microscopy. We observed the presence of connected and homogeneously distributed pores in a non-crystalline silica phase and a detectable interface between silica and remnant glass phases resulting in a framework similar to asymmetric membranes. The results indicate that the process of phase separation takes place at lower temperature than that of glass-transition on the surface of the glass phase. Essential reaction between water and silica at supercritical condition together with the formation and leaching of soluble phase contribute to obtain porous silica matrix, (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Silica gel with a specific surface area of 365 m(2).g(-1) and an average pore diameter of 60 Angstrom was chemically modified with 2-mercaptoimidazole. The degree of functionalization of the covalently attached molecule, (drop SiO)(3)(CH2)(3) - MI, where MI is the 2-mercaptoimidazole bound to the silica surface by a propyl group, was 0.58 mmolg.(-1). In individual metal adsorption experiments from aqueous solutions by the batch procedure, the affinity order was Hg(II)much greater than Cd-II > Cu-II approximate to Zn-II approximate to Pb-II > Mn-II at solution pHs between 4 and 7. Due to the high affinity by the sulfur atom, Hg-II is strongly bound to the functional groups. When solution containing a mixture of Hg-II, Cd-II, Cu-II, Zn-II, Pb-II, and Mn-II ions was passed through a column packed with the adsorbent, Hg-II was the only one whose adsorption and elution was not affected by the presence of other ions.

The complex analysis of dielectric/capacitance is a very useful approach to separate different polarization contributions existing in polycrystalline ceramics. In this letter, the authors use this type of spectroscopic analysis to separate the bulk's dielectric dipolar relaxation contributions from the polarization contribution due to space charge in the grain boundaries of a CaCu3Ti4O12/CaTiO3 polycrystalline composite system. The bulk dielectric dipolar relaxation was attributed to the self-intertwined domain structures from the CaCu3Ti4O12 phase coupled to the dipole relaxation from the CaTiO3 phase, while the space charge relaxation was attributed to the Schottky-type potential barrier responsible for the highly non-Ohmic properties observed in this composite polycrystalline system.
