Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) nanocomposites containing environmentally-friendly tungsten disulphide inorganic nanotubes (INTeWS2) have been successfully prepared by a simple solution blending method. The dynamic and isothermal crystallization studies by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that the INTeWS2 exhibits much more prominent nucleation activity on the crystallization of PHB than specific nucleating agents or other nanoscale fillers. Both crystallization rate and crystallinity significantly increase in the nanocomposites compared to neat PHB. These changes occur without modifying the crystalline structure of PHB in the nanocomposites, as shown by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXS) and infrared/Raman spectroscopy. Other parameters such as the Avrami exponent, the equilibrium melting temperature, global rate constant and the fold surface free energy of PHB chains in the nanocomposites were obtained from the calorimetric data in order to determine the influence of the INTeWS2 filler. The addition of INTeWS2 remarkably influences the energetics and kinetics of nucleation and growth of PHB, reducing the fold surface free energy by up to 20%. Furthermore, these nanocomposites also show an improvement in both tribological and mechanical (hardness and modulus) properties with respect to pure PHB evidenced by friction and nanoindentation tests, which is of important potential interest for industrial and medical applications.

The cup anemometer rotor aerodynamics is analytically studied based on the aerodynamics of a single cup. The effect of the rotation on the aerodynamic force is included in the analytical model, together with the displacement of the aerodynamic center during one turn of the cup. The model can be fitted to the testing results, indicating the presence of both the aforementioned effects

Despite the socioeconomic importance of walnut trees, poor rooting and recalcitrance to in vitro culture have hampered the establishment of high-yield clonal plantations. To improve walnut micropropagation, we introduced several modifications to current methods and evaluated the effects on microshoot performance and acclimatization. Nine selected genotypes (13-year-old trees) of the commercial hybrid Juglans major 209 x J. regia were cultured in vitro on DKW-C medium supplemented with 4.4 µM BA and 50 µM IBA. A protocol was developed that relies on the use of 0.40 mM phloroglucinol during shoot multiplication, 0.20 mM previous root induction, and 6.81 mg/L Fe3+ (FeEDDHA). Moreover, the addition of 83.2 µM glucose during the root expression phase significantly improved plant survival during acclimatization. Phloroglucinol promoted microshoot elongation but inhibited rooting, especially at concentrations above 0.40 mM. Replacing FeEDTA by FeEDDHA diminished chlorotic symptoms and improved rooting, with up to 90% microshoots developing viable roots. Likewise, glucose was more efficient than sucrose or fructose in promoting plant survival. At the proposed working concentrations, neither glucose nor FeEDDHA caused any noticeable deleterious effect on walnut micropropagation. Microscopic analysis revealed the physical continuity between adventitious roots and stem pericycles. Analysis of leaf genomic DNA with eight polymorphic microsatellite markers was supportive of the clonal fidelity and genetic stability of the micropropagated material. Successful clonal plantations (over 5,800 ramets) have been established by applying this protocol.

Starting from the documentation of high sprint velocity fluctuations in a Scrum project, this paper presents a thorough approach to identify the sources of issues arising in the context of Scrum implementation. Given that Scrum provides guidance on identifying process issues but not their root causes, various approaches are explored. This is of great relevance because Scrum defines project schedules relying heavily on sprint velocity and because it is the most widely used agile methodology. The findings provide a new approach to evaluate such fluctuations and establish a more realistic project assessment than what is currently defined by Scrum. In this respect, this paper contributes to improve the understanding of the software development process using this agile framework.

Synchronous machines with brushless excitation have the disadvantage that the field winding is not accessible for the de-excitation of the machine. This means that, despite the proper operation of the protection system, the slow de-excitation time constant may produce severe damage in the event of an internal short circuit. A high-speed de-excitation system for these machines was developed, and this study presents the continuation of a previously published study. This study presents the design by computer simulation and the results of the first commissioning of this de-excitation system in a commercial 20 MVA hydro-generator. The de-excitation is achieved by inserting resistance in the field circuit, obtaining a dynamic response similar to that achieved in machines with static excitation. In this case, a non-linear discharge resistor was used, making the dynamic response even better.

The performance of tandem stacks of Group III?V multijunction solar cells continues to improve rapidly, both through improved performance of the individual cells in the stack and throughi ncrease in the number of stacked cells. As the radiative efficiency of these individual cells increases, radiative coupling between the stacked cells becomes an increasingly important factor not only in cell design, but also in accurate efficiency measurement and in determining performance of cells and systems under varying spectral conditions in the field. Past modeling has concentrated on electroluminescent coupling between the cells, although photoluminescent coupling is shown to be important for cells operating near their maximum power point voltage or below or when junction defect recombination is significant. Extension of earlier models i sproposed to allow this non-negligible component of luminescent coupling to be included. Therefined model is validated by measurement of the closely related external emission from both single and double junction cells.

We use residual-delay maps of observational field data for barometric pressure to demonstrate the structure of latitudinal gradients in nonlinearity in the atmosphere. Nonlinearity is weak and largely lacking in tropical and subtropical sites and increases rapidly into the temperate regions where the time series also appear to be much noisier. The degree of nonlinearity closely follows the meridional variation of midlatitude storm track frequency. We extract the specific functional form of this nonlinearity, a V shape in the lagged residuals that appears to be a basic feature of midlatitude synoptic weather systems associated with frontal passages. We present evidence that this form arises from the relative time scales of high-pressure versus low-pressure events. Finally, we show that this nonlinear feature is weaker in a well regarded numerical forecast model (European Centre for Medium-Range Forecasts) because small-scale temporal and spatial variation is smoothed out in the grided inputs. This is significant, in that it allows us to demonstrate how application of statistical corrections based on the residual-delay map may provide marked increases in local forecast accuracy, especially for severe weather systems.
