Complete thermal characterization of liquid crystal mixtures in the smectic phase consisting of various relative volume fractions of cholesterol and 1-hexadecanol have been carried out using the photoacoustic technique. Thermal diffusivity values of these liquid crystal mixtures are evaluated using the open cell photoacoustic technique whereas the thermal effusivity value is measured using the conventional photoacoustic technique. From the measured values of these transient thermophysical parameters, the thermal conductivity and heat capacity of the sample under investigation are calculated. Analyses of the results show that all the thermophysical parameters depend strongly on the volume fraction of the constituents. Results are interpreted in terms of enhanced hydrogen bonding and the consequent enhancement in cohesive thermal energy transport with increasing volume fraction of 1-hexadecanol

The design and fabrication of fiber based ammonia sensors employing Bromothymol blue and Chitosan as sensing elements are presented in this paper. In the presence of ammonia gas the absorption of Bromothymol blue changes while in the case of Chitosan the refractive index changes which in turn modulates the intensity of light propagating through a fiber.

A comparative study of two biopolymer based fiber optic humidity sensors is presented in this paper. Sensing elements Agarose and Chitosan swells in the presence of water vapour and undergoes changes in refractive index and modulates the intensity of light propagating through a fiber with Agarose or Chitosan as cladding.

The- classic: experiment of Heinrich Hertz verified the theoretical predict him of Maxwell that kxnfli radio and light waves are physical phenomena governed by the same physical laws. This has started a.rnnJ era of interest in interaction of electromagnetic energy with matter. The scattering of electromagnetic waves from a target is cleverly utilized im1 RADAR. This electronic system used tx> detect and locate objects under unfavourable conditions or obscuration that would render the unaided eye useless. It also provides a means for measuring precisely the range, or distance of an object and the speed of a moving object. when an obstacle is illuminated by electromagnetic waves, energy is dispersed in all directions. The dispersed energy depends on the size, shape and composition of the obstacle and frequency and nature of the incident wave. This distribution of energy’ is known as ‘scattering’ and the obstacle as ‘scatterer’ or 'target'.

We present the first observation of optical transitions between doubly excited doublet states in the term systems N V, 0 VI and F VII. The spectra were produced by foil excitation of fast ion beams. The assignment of the spectral lines was made by comparison with the results of MCDP calculations along the isoelectronic sequence. The same method also led to the identification of two 3d - 4f quartet transitions in Mg X.

In continuation of our previous work on doubly-excited ions with three and four electrons we present the first results on optical transitions in the term system of doubly-excited ions with five electrons. Transitions between such sextet states were identified in beam-foil spectra of the ions nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine. Assignments were first established by comparison with Multi-Configuration Dirac-Fock calculations. Later assignments were aided by Multi-Configuration Hartree-Fock calculations (see the contribution by G. Miecznik et al. in this issue). Decay curves were recorded for all six candidate lines. The lifetime results are compared to theoretical values which confirm most of the assignments qualitatively.

Following an earlier observation in F VI we identified the line pair 1s2s2p^2 {^5P}-1s2s2p3d {^5P^0} , {^5D^0} for the elements N, O, Mg, and tentatively for A1 and Si in beam-foil spectra. Assignment was established by comparison with Multi-Configuration Dirac-Fock calculations along the isoelectronic sequence. Using this method we also identified some quartet lines of lithium-like ions with Z > 10.
