C、N、P是生物地球化学循环中的重要元素,其可利用性和各元素之间的平衡关系将生态系统的物质循环有机统一为一个整体。化学计量生态学为研究这几种基本元素间的平衡提供了一个有力的理论框架。许多研究表明,过度放牧会改变生态系统的结构和功能,而放牧如何影响植物的C:N:P化学计量关系的却少见报道。本研究以内蒙古锡林河流域沿水分梯度分布的草甸、草甸草原、典型草原和沙地四种植被类型中的灰脉苔草(Carex appendiculata)、贝加尔针茅(Stipa baicalensis)、羊草(Leymus chinensis)、大针茅(Stipa grandis)、小叶锦鸡儿(Caragana microphylla)、冷蒿(Artemisia frigid)、克氏针茅(S. krylovii)和榆树(Ulmus Pumila)疏林沙地8个草地群落为研究对象,对长期禁牧样地和自由放牧样地中273种植物,其中禁牧与放牧样地中的共有植物种为144个,测定了植物叶片C: N: P化学计量特征以及植株高度、丛幅面积、茎、叶和株(丛)生物量、茎叶比等功能性状,系统地研究了放牧对植物C:N:P化学计量特征和资源分配的影响。取得了如下主要研究结果和结论: 1. 放牧降低了植物叶片的C:N比,但增加了N:P比和C:P比。C:N:P 化学计量比的变化主要受叶片N和P含量变化的影响; 2. 植物C:N:P化学计量特征对放牧的响应同时受水分条件的制约。沿水分梯度分布的不同植被类型中,植物叶片C:N:P化学计量特征对放牧的响应不同。草甸群落中,植物叶片C含量显著降低,N和P含量显著增加;在草甸草原群落中,植物叶片C、P含量减少,N含量显著增加;而在典型草原群落中,植物叶片C、N和P含量均显著降低; 3. 在物种水平上,C、N、P含量对放牧的响应分为:显著增加、显著降低和没有显著变化三种类型。放牧影响下,植物叶片N含量和N:P比在显著升高的物种多于显著降低的,而叶片C含量、C:N和C:P显著降低的物种占的比例很小,表明植物对放牧适应策略与物种本身的生物学特性有着密切的关系。 4. 过度放牧使植物的植株高度、丛幅大小、株丛数、茎叶比和单株生物量均显著降低,即植物整体呈现小型化现象,进而导致群落初级生产力、茎和叶生物量下降。轻度放牧对物种的资源分配没有显著影响,单株(丛)生物量和群落茎、叶及总生物量均呈增加趋势,这与过度放牧的影响正好相反。 5. 过度放牧显著改变了物种的资源分配策略,使生物量向叶的分配比例增加,向茎的分配比例减少。资源优先向同化器官分配可能是草地植物对长期放牧干扰的一种重要适应对策。

内蒙古锡林河流域是我国典型温带草原分布地区,也是我国重点牧区之一。近年来,由于人口增加、过度放牧以及管理不善等原因导致草原退化加剧,草原生态系统养分输入输出失衡,草地生产力下降。 豆科植物不仅是高蛋白优质牧草,而且具有生物固氮能力,对维持草地生态系统中土壤-植物-动物之间的氮平衡有重要作用。本论文主要调查研究了内蒙古锡林河流域放牧草原生态系统中豆科植物的分布、固氮能力、微生物状况,并探讨了目前草原大量出现的豆科植物小叶锦鸡儿灌丛在养分供给上对草原生态系统的影响。 豆科植物的分布调查采用样线法在4 种草原植被类型7 个植物群落进行,包括典型草原(羊草群落、大针茅群落及小叶锦鸡儿群落和冷蒿群落2 个退化草原群落)、草甸草原(贝加尔针茅群落)、河漫滩草甸(灰脉苔草群落)及沙地(榆树疏林群落),除榆树疏林群落仅放牧处理外,其他群落均包括放牧和不放牧对照处理。结果显示,豆科植物共有12 属,16 种。放牧总体上降低了豆科植物种群在群落中的数量特征(平均高度、密度、频度)和种类组成,但在退化草原群落中有不同的变化趋势。小叶锦鸡儿在典型草原中分布广、密度大、出现频率高;尤其在小叶锦鸡儿群落放牧样地,出现频度为95%,密度近4 株•m-2。花苜蓿在4 种草原植被类型中均有分布。 典型草原4 个群落在放牧和不放牧条件下土壤微生物碳氮含量和微生物呼吸速率的测定结果显示,放牧影响了豆科植物根际土壤的微生物量和微生物呼吸速率,但各群落变化规律不一致。放牧后小叶锦鸡儿分布最为广泛的小叶锦鸡儿群落在放牧条件下微生物碳含量和微生物呼吸速率都显著增加。小叶锦鸡儿灌丛与其他草本豆科植物相比,根际土壤的微生物量和微生物呼吸速率较高。土壤水分对微生物呼吸速率以及微生物碳氮含量有重要作用,存在极显著的正相关关系。 采用15N 自然丰度法评估野外条件下小叶锦鸡儿和花苜蓿的固氮百分率,计算结果高于100%,这主要是由野外植物叶片δ15N 值低于室内无氮培养的B 值引起的。15N 自然丰度法是否适用于评估草原植物的固氮能力还有待深入研究,但从野外δ15N 测定中也得到了一些有趣的结果。优势豆科和非豆科植物之间的δ15N 差异很大。小半灌木木地肤δ15N 值最高,并在放牧后显著下降,杂类草、禾本科大针茅与之变化趋势相同;具有潜在固氮能力的豆科植物和禾本科羊草在放牧后无显著差异或显著增加;豆科植物小叶锦鸡儿、乳白花黄芪和花苜蓿的叶片δ15N 值均为偏低负值,显著低于非豆科植物。研究结果说明不同植物的氮利用方式不同,豆科植物和羊草的生物固氮可能同时为受氮限制的内蒙古草原提供氮源。 小叶锦鸡儿灌丛影响了周围土壤的有效氮含量。灌丛内部土壤硝态氮和氨态氮有高于外部土壤的趋势。土壤含水量与硝态氮浓度显著正相关。土壤有效氮含量变异系数平均高于50%,土壤资源表现出很强的空间异质性。灌丛内部植物体内全氮含量高于灌丛外,而灌丛斑块发育时间对植物化学元素没有显著影响。

自然界中资源的异质性是普遍存在的,既有自然因素导致的,也有人类干扰导致的。在内蒙古草原,植物经常处在地上部异质性的干扰生境和地下异质性的养分生境中。植物的生物量生产反映了植物对不同生境的适应能力,而资源的分配策略是链接进化生态学和功能生态学的纽带。在变化的生境中植物可以通过改变资源分配的格局而适应环境的变化,获得较高的生物产量。但是,关于草原植物在生物量生产和资源分配上如何对异质性的生境做出响应迄今研究尚少。为此在中国科学院内蒙古草原生态系统定位研究站的长期围封样地(1983年围封),设计了氮素添加和刈割处理的小区实验,使植物处于不同的养分和干扰生境中。我们选择羊草(Leymus chinensis ,根茎禾草,群落优势种)、大针茅(Stipa grandis ,丛生禾草,群落优势种)、糙隐子草(Cleistogenes squarrosa , C4 植物,群落常见伴生种)、木地肤(Kochia prostrate ,藜科半灌木,群落常见伴生种)、猪毛菜(Salsola collina,藜科一年生植物,群落常见伴生种)为对象对这一问题进行了研究。同时,以1979 年围封的羊草样地为对照,选择了比邻的刈割草场,就草原植物对长期刈割干扰的响应策略进行了研究。结果显示: 1. 氮素添加使植物群落生物量显著提高,而且高氮生境下群落生物量增加的幅度最大。从季节动态看,植物群落生物量对氮素添加的响应存在滞后现象,在植物进入快速生长期后,氮素添加的效应日趋明显。 2. 不同植物种群对氮素添加的响应不同,按照植物种群生物量的变化可以分为三种类型:极其敏感型 、敏感型和不敏感型。极其敏感型代表植物是羊草,氮素添加后其种群生物量显著增加。敏感型代表植物是糙隐子草和猪毛菜,前者种群生物量在中氮生境下显著增加,后者种群生物量在低氮生境下显著增加。不敏感型代表植物是大针茅和木地肤,氮素添加后,二者的种群生物量均无显著变化。 3.从生物量向地上和地下器官的分配来看,添加氮素后,一年生植物猪毛菜向地上器官分配的生物量的比例均显著增加;多年生草本植物羊草、大针茅和糙隐子草向地上器官分配的比例均没有发生变化;多年生灌木木地肤在中氮生境下向地上器官的分配比例增加。从生殖分配来看,多年生的C3植物羊草和大针茅和一年生的C4植物猪毛菜的生殖分配格局相对稳定,均未因氮素的添加而发生显著改变。多年生C4植物糙隐子草和木地肤在低氮生境中生殖分配比例显著增加。 4. 不同时间刈割对草原群落生物量影响不同。在牧草快速生长期刈割,群落生物量显著降低,当季能恢复,但影响翌年群落水平的生物量生产;而在牧草生物量最大期刈割,当季难恢复,但对第二年的植物的生长影响较小。 5. 刈割对不同植物的影响存在显著差异:C4植物<C3植物,一年生植物<多年生植物,牧草快速生长期刈割<牧草生物量最大期刈割。 6. 面对不同时间的刈割干扰,草原植物的响应不同。在生物量向地上器官和地下器官分配方面:C3植物大针茅、羊草面对刈割干扰生物量分配分配格局相对稳定,变异较小;而C4植物的资源分配对刈割干扰响应敏感,因不同刈割时间其生物量分配格局不同。在生物量生殖分配方面:多年生植物(如羊草、大针茅、糙隐子草、木地肤)资源分配格局相对稳定,面对刈割干扰其生物量生殖分配格局无显著变化,而一年生植物猪毛菜对刈割干扰敏感,因刈割时间不同其生殖分配格局将随之发生变化。 7.长期刈割干扰下大针茅的种群生物量维持不变;而糙隐子草的种群生物量表现为显著增长的趋势。由于大针茅的株丛生物量显著降低,糙隐子草无显著变化,长期刈割干扰下两种植物种群生物量的维持或增加都是因为密度的显著提高。因此,密度调节是两种植物实现种群调节的重要机制。 8. 长期刈割干扰下大针茅的丛面积和单株分蘖数均无显著变化,表明大针茅非生殖株丛密度的增加不是以降低单个非生殖株丛的大小为代价的,而是通过减少生殖株丛的密度来实现的。而糙隐子草丛面积降低,但是单株分蘖数无显著变化,说明糙隐子草密度增加的过程中,单个株丛占据的营养面积减少了,但株丛的生长状况没有受到显著影响。 9.面对长期刈割干扰,两种植物对无性繁殖和有性繁殖过程采取了截然相反的调整策略。大针茅显著提高了非生殖株丛的密度和相对密度,显著降低了生殖株丛的相对密度,而且降低了对有性生殖过程的生物量分配的比例。糙隐子草显著增加了生殖株丛的密度和相对密度,而且增加了对有性生殖过程的生物量分配的比例。面对刈割干扰两个植物种在繁殖策略上的逆向调节,可能是它们在刈割干扰梯度上能够相互取代的重要原因。

A variety of hydrogenated and non-hydrogenated amorphous carbon thin films have been characterized by means of grazing-incidence X-ray reflectivity (XRR) to give information about their density, thickness, surface roughness and layering. We used XRR to validate the density of ta-C, ta-C:H and a-C:H films derived from the valence plasmon in electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements, up to 3.26 and 2.39 g/cm3 for ta-C and ta-C:H, respectively. By comparing XRR and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) data, we have been able for the first time to fit a common electron effective mass of m*/me = 0.87 for all amorphous carbons and diamond, validating the `quasi-free' electron approach to density from valence plasmon energy. While hydrogenated films are found to be substantially uniform in density across the film, ta-C films grown by the filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) show a multilayer structure. However, ta-C films grown with an S-bend filter show a high uniformity and only a slight dependence on the substrate bias of both sp3 and layering.

The Hainan gibbon (Nomascus hainanus) is one of the most endangered primates in the world, confined to mature natural forest in Hainan Island, China. We assessed changes in habitat condition on the island between 1991 and 2008, using vegetation maps generated by remote-sensing images. We defined forest suitable for gibbons based on composition, tree size and canopy cover. During the 17-year period, the area of suitable gibbon forest decreased by 540 km(2) (35%) across the whole island, and by 6.3 km(2) (7%) in the locality of the sole remaining gibbon population at Bawangling National Nature Reserve. The forest patches large enough (>1 km(2)) to support a gibbon group decreased from 754 km(2) to 316 km(2) in total area, and from 92 to 64 in number. Suitable natural forest was mainly replaced by plantations below 760 m, or degraded by logging, grazing and planting of pines above 760 m. Meanwhile, forests in former confirmed gibbon areas became more fragmented: mean area of patches decreased by 53%. We mapped the patches of natural forest in good condition which could potentially support gibbons. We recommend a freeze on further expansion of plantations between core patches at Bawangling, Jiaxi-Houmiling and Yinggeling Nature Reserves in accordance with forest protection regulations; establishment of nature reserves in currently unprotected natural forest patches elsewhere in line with the local government's nature reserve expansion policy; and active natural-forest restoration between remaining fragments at Bawangling. Four experiments each with three replications were conducted in 12 experimental ponds to control the euglenophytes bloom viz. treatment 1 (T1, covering of one third of the water surface by duckweed (Lemna minor); treatment 2 (T2), application of 123.5 kg lime/ha/month; treatment 3 (T3), use of both duckweed as in T1 and lime as in T2; treatment 4 (T4) was considered as control where neither duckweed nor lime was applied. Fishes comprising of rohu (Labeo rohita), catla (Catla catla), mrigal ( Cirrhinus cirrhosus), silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and silver barb (Barbonymus gonionotus) were stocked at the rate of 1080 fishes/ha with the species ratio of 8:4:6:9:13, respectively. The lowest cell density of euglenophytes was found in the ponds of T3 followed by T2, and T1. In the ponds of T3, euglenophytes bloom did not occur possibly due to alkaline pH, shade and nutrient absorption by duckweed. Thin bloom was observed in the ponds of T1 where pH was neutral or slightly alkaline. The grazing on euglenophytes by the silver carp and silver barb also had some contribution in controlling the bloom. Growth of fishes was comparatively higher in the ponds of T3 and T1, which might be due to better water quality and availability of adequate food while the lower fish growth as recorded from the ponds of T4 might be due to euglenophytes bloom. Thick bloom inhibited light penetration which hampered photosynthesis and growth of other phytoplankton that are the preferred food of planktivorous fishes. Mortality of fishes in ponds having euglenophytes bloom was possibly due to formation of anoxic situation in the early morning or due to the combined effect of anoxic situation and toxic metabolites secretion by the euglenophytes.

The study was designed to assess the environmental impact of shrimp farming and implications on local livelihoods at the south-west coastal area of Bangladesh. All the stakeholders reported that shrimp farming negatively affected on the environment at the coastal area. The soil and water, fish habitation, agricultural cropland, grazing land, indigenous fish, household vegetations, trees and plants, land fertility and mangroves are affected negatively by the shrimp farming in the coastal area. About 44% of stakeholders agreed that mangroves were destroyed by the extension of shrimp farming in the study area. In the case of positive impact of shrimp farming on environment about 16% of stakeholders agreed that the household vegetations increased due to alternate rice and shrimp-prawn farming.

选用婆罗门牛和BMY牛供体超数排卵,以第1次人工授精(AI)当日为0 d,分别在AI第6~6.5天、7~7.5天和8~8.5天回收胚胎,统计≤16细胞胚、桑椹胚、囊胚和孵化胚的数量,计算各发育阶段胚胎所占的百分率,分析婆罗门牛和BMY牛的胚胎回收适期.结果表明:婆罗门牛AI第6~6.5天的桑椹胚率比BMY牛高43.54个百分点(P<0.01),AI第8~8.5天的孵化胚率比BMY牛高35.94个百分点(P<0.05),胚胎发育速度比BMY牛较快.罗门牛和BMY牛在AI第6~6.5天回收胚胎的囊胚率低,而第8~8.5天的孵化胚率高,胚胎回收以AI第7~7.5天为宜.

以探讨添加脂肪酸钙对放牧肉牛(婆罗门和BMY)超数排卵效果及血中雌二醇(E2)和孕酮(P4)水平的影响为目的.将48头供体分为Ⅰ(放牧或对照组)、Ⅱ(放牧+浓缩饲料500 g/d)和Ⅲ(放牧+浓缩饲料500 g/d+脂肪酸钙100 g/d)3组,从同期发情处理开始到冲胚结束试验期32 d,并对供体牛在8个处理时段进行采血,用放射免疫分析法(RIA)分析E2和P4水平.试验结果表明:Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ组供体牛超数排卵的排卵率分别为75.4%,74.4%和81.7%(P>0.05),受精率分别为81.4%,55.6%和93.2%(P>0.05);获胚(卵)数分别为7.0枚,6.3枚和7.3枚(P>0.05),可用胚数分别为3.9枚,2.6枚和4.7枚,Ⅲ组显著高于Ⅱ组(P<0.05);E2平均水平分别为0.57 pg/mL,0.47 pg/mL和0.63 pg/mL(P>0.05),P4平均水平分别为3.53 ng/mL,5.03 ng/mL和3.74 ng/mL,Ⅱ组高于Ⅰ,Ⅲ组(P<0.01).表明适量添加脂肪酸钙能改善全放牧肉牛的营养、增强体质,促进排卵与受精,增加超数排卵的可用胚数;能使供体牛的E2和P4水平比对照组有所提高;添加效果冬、春季优于夏、秋季.

为了比较婆罗门牛和BMY牛的雌二醇(E2)、孕酮(P4)水平及胚胎生产潜力,并探讨MOET技术在BMY牛扩繁中的应用前景,采用进口激素(日本产FSH 24~36 mg+美国产PG 35 mg)和国产激素(国产FSH 10~12 mg+国产PG 0.8 mg)对全放牧婆罗门牛和BMY牛进行超排,并于超排前(同期发情第7天)、超排开始、超排第3天、超排发情当天和胚胎回收当天采集血液,采用RIA法分析血浆中的E2和P4水平。结果表明,BMY牛的黄体数和获胚(卵)数、可用胚数分别较婆罗门牛高2.09个和0.95、0.36枚,但差异不显著(P>0.05);BMY牛的排卵率较婆罗门牛高18.46%(P<0.01),而可用胚率则较婆罗门牛低2.55%(P<0.01)。BMY牛在5个处理时段的E2和P4平均值分别较婆罗门牛高0.58 pg/mL(P<0.01)和1.44 ng/mL(P>0.05),在各处理时段的P4水平变化规律几乎与婆罗门牛一致,E2/P4值为婆罗门牛的5.16倍。结果提示,BMY母牛的E2和P4水平高于婆罗门牛,在激素水平和繁殖性能方面表现出一定的杂种优势;E2水平低是婆罗门牛发情微弱和排卵率低的主要原因...

Phytoplankton productivity is the common and important factor being considered in determining the overall status of a given body of water. This is because they are found at the base of an energy or food chain, being the basic source of primary food in a given aquatic system. Hence, information on their contribution is essential in indicating how much biomass energy will be available to all other living resources in the system. Though the primary productivity of shallow lakes is characterized by mixed populations of phytoplankton and submersed aquatic vegetation in the open water. Lake Choghakhor, is a shallow lake, located in Chaharmahal-Bakhtiyari Province. This lake is the most important ecosystem in the region especially for waterfowl populations, has a recreational value and supports tourism and fisheries. During last decade Choghakhor has been influenced by some man-made impacts such as water level fluctuation, agricultural discharge and fish (Cyprinids) introduction causing a serious problem in its trophic states. So water quality for physical, chemical and biological was monitored in five sampling stations, from April 2003 to March 2004. As biological parameters we studied phytoplankton, epiphytic algae, and zooplankton and macrobenthose community structure. Chlorophyll a content for phytoplankton and epiphytes was measured to estimate production of these groups (biomass over time). Also we determined biomasses of submersed macrophytes and macrobenthose and primary production of phytoplankton (dark and light bottles technique) to estimate fish production. The results of this study showed Lake Choghakhor did not undergo stable thermal and oxygen stratification, and the lake water was mixed throughout the study (the lake mixing regime is polymictic). Now submerged plants especially Myriophyllum spicatum has covered almost the entire lake and dense macrophyte beds (Polygonom amphibium), located on the east southern end of the lake appear to act as a sink for these nutrients. Lake Choghakhor appeared to be in a macrophyte dominated clear water state with low TP (annual mean: 24± 15μg.l-1) and chlorophyll a (annual mean: 3±1.28μg.l-1) concentrations and very high Secchi depth. The grazing pressure of dominant pelagic filtering zooplankton Daphnia longespina did not seem to be significant in determining the low phytoplankton crop expressed as chlorophyll a. We expect that sequestering of nutrients by submerged plants and associated epiphytes are the dominant stabilizing mechanisms suppressing the phytoplankton crop of Lake Choghakhor.

We studied the altitudinal ranging of one habituated group of black-crested gibbons (Nomascus concolor) at Dazhaizi, Mt. Wuliang, Yunnan, China, between March 2005 and April 2006. The group ranged from 1,900 to 2,680 m above sea level. Food distribution was the driving force behind the altitudinal ranging patterns of the study group. They spent 83.2% of their time ranging between 2,100 and 2,400 m, where 75.8% of important food patches occurred. They avoided using the area above 2,500 m despite a lack of human disturbance there, apparently because there were few food resources. Temperature had a limited effect on seasonal altitudinal ranging but probably explained the diel altitudinal ranging of the group, which tended to use the lower zone in the cold morning and the higher zone in the warm afternoon. Grazing goats, the main disturbance, were limited to below 2,100 m, which was defined as the high-disturbance area (HDA). Gibbons spent less time in the HDA and, when ranging there, spent more time feeding and travelling and less time resting and singing. Human activities directly influenced gibbon behaviour, might cause forest degradation and create dispersal barriers between populations. Copyright (C) 2010 S. Karger AG, Basel

This paper highlights the results of a 12 month's ecological study of macrophytes and their role in the economy of the lower Sondu-Miriu river of Lake Victoria. A total of 34 species of aquatic macrophytes were identified. These were grouped as emergent, floating leaved, free floating and submersed. The major community type identified were dominated by Cladium jamaicanse (Crantz) Kurk., Cyperus paprus (L.) and Cyperus latifolius (Poir). The study observed an over dependence on macrophytes by the local community for the supply of bedding, grazing fields, fuel, roofing and other building materials. The white (heart) of Typha shoot, Nile cabbage (Pistia stratiotes and a legume solanum nigrum traditionally known as "osuga" are used as vegetables by local community. The only source of protein in this arid region is the fish caught in the swamps and birds which inhabit the swamp. The swamp provides the only source of green pasture in the dry season for the animals. An export oriented economy has developed involving mat making and basket weaving with exports reaching as far as Japan. The study proposes a rational and sustainable exploitation of the littoral zone to support the adjacent rural community.

Black-and-white snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus bieti) are endemic to the Trans-Himalayas in Northwest Yunnan and Southeast Tibet between the upper Yangtze and Mekong Rivers. Based on field surveys and previous reports, we identified the dark-coniferous forest, the mixed coniferous and broadleaf forest, and oak patches as suitable habitats (SH) for the monkeys. Summer grazing lands (SGL), which were made by local people cutting and burning the dark-coniferous forest at the high altitude belt, replaced SH. To have a general view of the status of the SH in Yunnan, we estimated the areas of SH and SGL from satellite images in 1997, and compared with areas estimated from aerial photo-based maps (ca. 1958). The work resulted in: 1) the area of SH was 4,169 km(2) in 1997; 2) SGL was 1,923 km(2); 3) during the past 40 years, the area of SH decreased by 31% (1,887 km(2)), and SGL increased by 204% (1,291 km(2)); and 4) the mean size of forest patches decreased from 15.6 to 5.4 km(2). In addition, the area of SGL is positively correlated to local human population (R-2 greater than or equal to0.53), implying that the reduction and fragmentation of habitat for Rhinopithecus bieti is a result of population growth of humans, who mostly employ traditional modes of production. Only 11 monkey groups remained in the changing habitat. Considering that forests at lower elevation were also encroached upon by farmlands in a similar way, the forest ecosystem is highly threatened. The destruction will continue unless there is a change in the mode of production in the region.

We study the Fe-catalyzed chemical vapor deposition of carbon nanotubes by complementary in situ grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction, in situ X-ray reflectivity, and environmental transmission electron microscopy. We find that typical oxide supported Fe catalyst films form widely varying mixtures of bcc and fcc phased Fe nanoparticles upon reduction, which we ascribe to variations in minor commonly present carbon contamination levels. Depending on the as-formed phase composition, different growth modes occur upon hydrocarbon exposure: For γ-rich Fe nanoparticle distributions, metallic Fe is the active catalyst phase, implying that carbide formation is not a prerequisite for nanotube growth. For α-rich catalyst mixtures, Fe3C formation more readily occurs and constitutes part of the nanotube growth process. We propose that this behavior can be rationalized in terms of kinetically accessible pathways, which we discuss in the context of the bulk iron-carbon phase diagram with the inclusion of phase equilibrium lines for metastable Fe3C. Our results indicate that kinetic effects dominate the complex catalyst phase evolution during realistic CNT growth recipes. © 2012 American Chemical Society.
