The liquid structure of 1-methyl-4-cyanopyridinium bis {(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide, a prototypical ionic liquid containing an electron-withdrawing group on the cation, has been investigated at 368 K. Experimental neutron scattering combined with empirical potential structure refinement analysis of the data and classical molecular dynamics simulations have been used to probe the liquid structure in detail. Both techniques generated highly consistent results that provide valuable validation of the force fields and refinement approaches. A significant degree of apparent charge ordering is found in the liquid structure, although the nonspherical shape of the ions results in interpenetration of cations into the first shell of adjacent cations, with much shorter closest contact distances than the averaged center-of-mass cation-cation and cation-anion separations.

The oxidation of hydrogen was studied at an activated platinum micro-electrode by cyclic voltammetry in the following ionic liquids: [C(2)mim][NTf2], [C(4)mim][NTf2], [N-6.2.2.2][NTf2], [P-14.6.6.6][NTf2], [C(4)mim][OTf], [C(4)mim][BF4] [C(4)mim][PF6], [C(4)mim][NO3], [C(6)mim]Cl and [C(6)mim][FAP] (where [C(n)mim](+) = 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium, [N-6,N-2,N-2,N-2](+) = n-hexyltriethylammonium, [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6](+) = tris(n-hexyltetradecyl) phosphonium, [NTf2](-) = bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide, [OTf] = trifluoromethlysulfonate and [FAP](-) = tris(perfluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate). Activation of the Pt electrode was necessary to obtain reliable and reproducible voltammetry. After activation of the electrode, the H-2 oxidation waves were nearly electrochemically and chemically reversible in [C(n)mim][NTf2] ionic liquids, chemically irreversible in [C(6)mim]Cl and [C(4)mim][NO3], and showed intermediate characteristics in OTf-, [BF4](-), [PF6](-), [FAP](-) and other [NTf2](-)-based ionic liquids. These differences reflect the contrasting interactions of protons with the respective RTIL anions. The oxidation peaks are reported relative to the half-wave potential of the cobaltocenium/cobaltocene redox couple in all ionic liquids studied, giving an indication of the relative proton interactions of each ionic liquid. A preliminary temperature study (ca. 298-333 K) has also been carried out in some of the ionic liquids. Diffusion coefficients and solubilities of hydrogen at 298 K were obtained from potential-step chronoamperometry, and there was no relationship found between the diffusion coefficients and solvent viscosity. RTILs possessing [NTf2](-) and [FAP](-) anions showed the highest micro-electrode peak currents for the oxidation in H-2 saturated solutions, with[C(4)mim][NTf2] toeing the most sensitive. The large number of available RTIL anion/cation pairs allows scope for the possible electrochemical detection of hydrogen gas for use in gas sensor technology. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Simulations of beta-glucose in the ionic liquid 1,3-dimethylimidazoliurn chloride have been performed in order to examine the solvation environment of the carbohydrate. Both single molecule and 1:5 glucose:ionic liquid (16.7 wt %) solutions are Studied, and the hydrogen bonding between sugar and solvent is examined. The primary solvation shell around the perimeter of the glucose ring consists predominantly of chloride anions which hydrogen bond to the hydroxyl groups. A small presence of the cation is also found, with the association Occurring through the weakly acidic hydrogen at the 2-position of the imidazolium ring interacting with the oxygen atoms of the sugar secondary hydroxyls. An average chloride coordination number of 4 is found around the glucose for both the single molecule and high concentration Simulations, despite the reduced chloride:glucose ratio in the latter case. In relation to the cation, the glucose molecules occupy positions above and below the plane of the imidazolium ring. Importantly, even at high glucose concentrations, no significant change in the anion-cation interactions and overall liquid structure of the ionic liquid is found, indicating that the glucose is readily accommodated by the solvent at this concentration. Dominant contributions to the sugar-ionic liquid interaction energy come from favorable hydrogen bonding (electrostatic) interactions between hydroxyls and chlorides, although a small favorable van der Waals energy contribution is also seen between the sugar and cations suggesting that the cation could be tailored in order to further improve the dissolution of glucose/cellulose in ionic liquid systems.

This Account describes experimental data used to understand the structure of ionic liquids and solute-solvent interactions of both molecular solutes and dissolved metal complexes. In general, the structures of the ionic liquids determined from experimental data show good agreement with both simulated structures and solid-state structures. For all ionic liquids studied, strong charge ordering is found leading to long-range order even in the presence of a solute. For dissolved metal complexes, the ionic liquid is not innocent and a clear dependence on the speciation is observed with variations in both the cation and anion.

Neutron diffraction has been used to determine the liquid structure of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium bis{( trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl} amide ([dmim][NTf2]). Significantly smaller charge ordering is found in this liquid compared with analogous chloride and hexafluorophosphate salts due to the diffuse charge density and size of the [NTf2](-) anion. This is manifested in a much larger cation-cation and cation-anion separation and an overlap of the cation-cation and cation-anion shells. Comparison of the liquid structure with the crystal structure reported by Holbrey et al. ( Dalton Trans. 2004, 2267) indicates little correlation, for example, the [NTf2](-) anion adopts a trans orientation predominantly in the liquid whereas a cis orientation is found in the solid phase.

Measurements on the diffusion coefficient of the neutral molecule N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-para-phenylenediamine and the radical cation and dication generated by its one- and two-electron oxidation, respectively, are reported over the range 298-348 K in both acetonitrile and four room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). Data were collected using single and double potential step chronamperometry at a gold disk electrode of micrometer dimension, and analysed via fitting to the appropriate analytical expression or, where necessary, to simulation. The variation of diffusion coefficient with temperature was found to occur in an Arrhenius-type manner for all combinations of solute and solvent. For a given ionic liquid, the diffusional activation energies of each species were not only closely equivalent to each other, but also to the RTIL's activation energy of viscous flow. In acetonitrile supported with 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate, the ratio in diffusion coefficients of the radial cation and dication tot he neutral molecule were calculated as 0.89 +/- 0.05 and 0.51 +/- 0.03, respectively. In contrast, amongst the ionic liquids the same ratios were determined to be on average 0.53 +/- 0.04 and 0.33 +/- 0.03. The consequences of this dissimilarity are considered in terms of the modelling of voltammetric data gathered within ionic liquid solvents.

The properties of the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium salt of the dinuclear mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato)bis[bis-(nitrato-O,O)dioxouranate(VI)] anion have been investigated using electrochemistry, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and extended X-ray absorbance fine structure spectroscopy: the anion structures from these last two techniques are in excellent agreement with each other. Electrochemical reduction of the complex leads to the a two-electron metal-centered reduction of U(VI) to U(IV), and the production Of UO2, or a complex containing UO2. Under normal conditions, this leads to the coating of the electrode with a passivating film. The presence of volatile organic compounds in the ionic liquids 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate (where the 1-alkyl chain was methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, dodecyl, hexadecyl, or octadecyl) during the oxidative dissolution of uranium(IV) oxide led to the formation of a yellow precipitate. To understand the effect of the cation upon the composition and structure of the precipitates, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium salts of a number of nitratodioxouranate(VI) complexes were synthesized and then analyzed using X-ray crystallography. It was demonstrated that the length of the 1-alkyl chain played an important role, not only in the composition of the complex salt, but also in the synthesis of dinuclear anions containing the bridging mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato), or oxalato, ligand, by protecting it from further oxidation.

The determination of chloride impurities in ionic liquids using ion chromatography is described. A wide range of cation-anion combinations may be analyzed using ion chromatography, including water-immiscible ionic liquids. For all ionic liquids studied, the limit of quantification for chloride was found to be below 8 ppm.

Room temperature ionic liquids have been used as solvents for the palladium-catalysed copolymerisation of styrene and carbon monoxide. The behaviour of various ionic liquids, the nature and concentration of palladium catalyst, and the reusability of the catalyst-ionic liquid system are discussed. The effects of cation, anion and alkyl chain length of the ionic liquids on the reaction are also addressed. The yield of the polyketone in the ionic liquid systems is enhanced over conventional solvents studied under similar conditions.

1-Alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloropalladate(ii) salts ([C-n-mim](2)[PdCl4], n = 10, 12, 14, 16, 18) containing a single, linear alkyl-chain substituent on the cation have been synthesised and their behaviour characterised by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. The salts display thermotropic polymorphism, exhibiting both crystal-crystal transitions and, for n = 14-18, the formation of a thermotropic smectic liquid crystalline phase.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Downstream effects of muscarinic receptor stimulation in intestinal smooth muscle include contraction and intestinal transit. We thought to determine whether classic transient receptor potential (TRPC) channels integrate the intracellular signaling cascades evoked by the stimulated receptors and thereby contribute to the control of the membrane potential, Ca-influx, and cell responses. METHODS: We created trpc4-, trpc6-, and trpc4/trpc6-gene-deficient mice and analyzed them for intestinal smooth muscle function in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: In intestinal smooth muscle cells TRPC4 forms a 55 pS cation channel and underlies more than 80% of the muscarinic receptor-induced cation current (mI(CAT)). The residual mI(CAT) depends on the expression of TRPC6, indicating that TRPC6 and TRPC4 determine mI(CAT) channel activity independent of other channel subunits. In TRPC4-deficient ileal myocytes the carbachol-induced membrane depolarizations are diminished greatly and the atropine-sensitive contraction elicited by acetylcholine release from excitatory motor neurons is reduced greatly. Additional deletion of TRPC6 aggravates these effects. Intestinal transit is slowed down in mice lacking TRPC4 and TRPC6. CONCLUSIONS: In intestinal smooth muscle cells TRPC4 and TRPC6 channels are gated by muscarinic receptors and are responsible for mI(CAT). They couple muscarinic receptors to depolarization of intestinal smooth muscle cells and voltage-activated Ca(2+)-influx and contraction, and thereby accelerate small intestinal motility in vivo.

This paper compares the structure of 1-alkyl-3-methylim ridazolium salts using SAXS and X-ray reflectivity. A range of anions have been investigated namely chloride, bromide, trifluoromethanesulfonate (OTf), bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFI) and tetrachloropalladate(II) with cation alkyl chains ranging from n = 12-20. In general, the salts show liquid crystalline behaviour whose structure is still observed on melting into an isotropic liquid.

Ionic liquid crystals were obtained by coupling one or two mesogenic units (cholesterol or cyanobiphenyl) to an imidazolium cation. Anions are bromide, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and tetrakis(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato)europate(III). The mesomorphism of the compounds depends on the type and number of mesogenic units and on the type of anion. In general, the most stable mesophases are observed for the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide salts. Most of the compounds containing cholesterol moieties show enantiotropic SmA* phases over a broad temperature range, and some of them are room temperature liquid crystals. Modeling of the small-angle X-ray scattering patterns revealed the molecular arrangement in these mesophases. On the contrary, most of the compounds containing cyanobiphenyl groups exhibit monotropic lamellar or nematic mesophases, depending on the number of mesogenic units. The imidazolium salts containing the tetrakis(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato)europate(III) anion show an intense red photoluminescence.

Refractive index determination of minerals and gems often requires their immersion in fluids with the same refractive index. However, these natural materials frequently have refractive indices above the ranges of common organic solvents. Most available high refractive index immersion materials are solid at room temperature, toxic, noxious, corrosive, carcinogenic, or any combination thereof. Since the physical properties of ionic liquids can be tuned by varying the cation and/or anion, we have developed immersion fluids for mineralogical studies which are relatively benign. We report here the syntheses of a range of ionic liquids ( many novel) based on the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cation, which all have refractive indices greater than 1.4, and can be used as immersion fluids for optical mineralogy studies. We further show that for a series of ionic liquids with the same anion, the refractive indices can be adjusted by systematic changes in the cation.

We report here the improved syntheses of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids. Microwave irradiation drastically reduces the preparation time of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium and N-alkylpyridinium halide salts and, in addition, three halide-free routes to ionic liquids have been developed. New, chiral, imidazolium-based ionic liquids were prepared using both conventional and halide-free procedures. Chirality was introduced in the new compounds at either the cation or the anion, or both.
