Prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with gastroesophageal reflux disease: 4-year followup

The gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the main causes of dental erosion. The aim of this case presented is to describe the prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with GERD after 4 years of followup. A 33-year-old male patient complained about tooth sensitivity. The lingual surface of the maxillary anterior teeth and the cusps of the upper and lower posterior teeth presented wear. It was suspected that the feeling of heartburn reported by the patient associated with the intake of sports supplements (isotonics) was causing gastroesophageal changes. The patient was referred to a gastroenterologist and was diagnosed with GERD. Dental treatment was performed with metal-free crowns and porcelain veneers after medical treatment of the disease. With the change in eating habits, the treatment of GERD and lithium disilicate ceramics provided excellent cosmetic results after 4 years and the patient reported satisfaction with the treatment.

Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) seem to present asymmetric postural control, and the commitment to postural control that is a big factor of falls in this population. However, the asymmetry in the postural control of fallers and non fallers with PD and neurologically healthy elderly is not too much studied. The objective of the study is to analyze the asymmetry in postural control in different static positions of elderly patients with PD and healthy elderly fallers and non fallers. The study included 70 older adults with PD and 70 neurologically healthy (CG). The groups were matched for age, gender, height, weight and cognitive condition. It was evaluated the clinical, cognitive status and incidence of falls among its participants through weekly prospective follow-up of 4 months. Then, for each group, CG and PD, it was selected 12 elderly fallers and 12 elderly non fallers to evaluate postural control. Participants were evaluated through two force platforms in conditions of bipedal support, unipedal and tandem position. It was realized 3 attempts of 30s for each condition. For unipedal and tandem condition it was made 3 attempts for each lower limb. The parameters of interest of the center of pressure (CoP), were analyzed for each condition and compared by MANOVAs with factor group, fall and asymmetry. Post hoc Tukey tests were used to determine the relationships between them. The results show that CG individuals showed greater velocity and CoP area in relation to PD. It was verified that at the control group that non fallers individuals (CGN) had more displacement and RMS in the average lateral direction in the dominant limb when compared to the less affected limb of non fallers with PD (PDN). Faller individuals in the control group (CGF) had larger area in the non dominant limb when compared to the most affected leg of fallers individuals with PD (PDF). Introduction: health professionals, in many cases, have defensive and exclusionary practices, patterns of prejudice and discrimination in response to HIVpositive patients. Objective: to verify the perception of patients seropositives from a reference center for STD/HIV/aids in relation to health care. Methods: there were interviews with questions related to discriminatory attitudes suffered, access and health care. Results: 130 individuals participated in the survey, from which 30 (23.1%) reported events of discrimination suffered outside the center of reference, predominantly from surgeon-dentists and 112 (86.2%) believed to have the same access and health care as other citizens. 62 (47.7%) treated with the dental center of reference, of which 56 (90.3%) felt good being treated in a dental unit only for HIV positive and six (9.7%) were indifferent, believed to be more exposed, or have a bias to attend dental seropositive individuals. Conclusion: it is concluded that many patients have already been discriminated against outside the reference center. However, most of them have a positive feeling towards the treatment received at a specifi c place for treating HIV-positive patients, due to the feeling of being welcome at that place due to the humanization and access to health care.

Projeto pedagógico e estrutura curricular de um curso de odontologia: análise crítica fundamentada na percepção acadêmica

Considering that the current pedagogical project for the Dentistry course at FOA-Unesp was structured in 2001, a year before the national resolution that introduced the new curricular guidelines for the dental field, the aim of this study was to analyze critically this document and assess the academic perception of the pedagogical project, as well as the current curricular structure. A previously tested and validated semi-structured questionnaire was used to obtain the needed information, and a documentary analysis was conducted. The questionnaire was drafted based on data from the National Curricular Guidelines (DCN) and Unified Health System (SUS) guidelines. The sample consisted of almost all the graduating students of 2007 (n = 61). Of these, 95% had no knowledge of the pedagogical project for the undergraduate course; 53% found the integration between the disciplines offered by the course insufficient; 66% pointed out that there was duplication of the revised contents; 41% said that the interdisciplinary relation was unsatisfactory, and 67.2% said they preferred the modular system of teaching. Furthermore, 55.7% of the students said that that the course does not fully cover the principles of completeness and resolution of actions, and 37.7% pointed out that clinical care was not humanized. As for the competence and skills needed to exercise the profession, the students admitted feeling secure about carrying out preventivecurative clinical actions, and feeling insecure about developing broad ranging actions, like managing and planning. Analysis of the documents showed a certain disagreement in the organization of the pedagogical project and the curricular structure, when confronted with the course of action set down by the National Curricular Guidelines. The data prove the urgent need to restructure the FOA-Unesp curriculum and confirm the importance of a continuous evaluation in higher education.

A vergonha na escola: uma análise fenomenológica dos discursos dos alunos

It is common to feel shame in any age. This research reveals the meaning of the shame to children from a municipal school of Valinhos city (São Paulo – Brasil). The point of view of some authors who treat the subject was considered and the shame was analyzed in the student‟s experience of life The method employed was the Qualitative Reserach of the Situated Phenomenon, throug the analyses taken from each pupil and, subsequently, from the general characteristics of the speechs. The shame is every associated to the failure, to the act of err by incompetence or desobedience. Just like the authors studied show, the shame has the feeling and the thinking toghether in the children: the racional and the emotional. The shame could be considered like a circuit: the failure lead to insecurity, fear and shame. Shame is a component of the learning and sometimes can be a limit to it. Children reveals how and when they fell shame. Some authors advise that the selfconfidence and the belief in being able to do the proposed task reduces the chances of the error and, consequently, to the shame.

The effects of an intervention in social skills were assessed in four university students with ages between 19 and 31, with social phobia diagnosis. The performance in social skills as well as performance-compatible disorder was assessed before, after the intervention, and follow-up in four months later, by the instruments: SCID-I, Mini-SPIN, QACC-VU and IHS in a multiple baseline design among participants. The intervention programmed twelve weekly meetings in which the researcher discussed socially skilled alternatives to the described difficulties; leaded dialogued theoretical explanations about the theme of the meeting and also performed functional assessments and repertory training of the participants. It was observed deficits such as public speaking, starting and maintaining conversation in the participants’ social skills repertory, which are consistent with the criteria for social phobia and the difficulties into the adapting to university. After the intervention, the participants left difficulties in public speaking, performance characteristic compatible with the social phobia diagnosis and they also increased social repertory, although it is still necessary the improvement of other skills, such as expressing positive feeling.

This article evaluates the influence of culture and elements from organizational bonds in the perception of communicative process between a public teaching hospital and its users, and the strategies used to overcome difficulties in this dialogue. It was possible to evaluate how the dialogue is perceived in a scenario marked by organizational bonds such as identification, belonging feeling, idealization of the organization and solidarity.
