Seasonal vatiations of the chemical composition of Brazilian propolis

The seasonal variations in the chemical composition of Brazilian propolis, collected by two bee subspecies, Africanized Apis mellifera and European Apis mellifera ligustica, have been investigated by GC and GC-MS. The main components of the samples were phenolic compounds, especially cinnamic acid derivatives, the only exception being the autumn sample from Apis mellifera ligustica, where diterpenes predominated. In propolis from both subspecies, diterpenes appeared in summer and reached maximum percentage in autumn, but were absent during the other seasons. The results obtained indicated that both bee subspecies collect propolis from among the same group of plants, and that there are at least two important plant sources, but these remain unidentified.

The Araçatuba Dental Journal was created with the purpose of disseminating scientific papers produced in universities of São Paulo state and from other localizations in Brazil. The aim of this study was to analyze and quantify the papers published in the Araçatuba Dental Journal from 2001 to 2011. Twenty two online editions were studied. A higher number of scientific studies (44,54%) was found compared to literature reviews (27,73%) and case reports (27,73%). The Araçatuba Dental School (UNESP) was the instituition that most published papers in the journal (44,12%). It can be concluded that regardless the analyzation process, the mentioned journal provides to the readers the opportunity to update their knowledge in dentistry.

Nanotecnologia e nanociência em livros didáticos de física do nível médio: discursos sobre a tecnologia e a educação científica e tecnológica

In this contribution, we analyze conceptual approaches to nanotechnology and nanoscience in recent issues of secondary education of Brazilian physics textbooks. We analyzed fifteen collections of Physics textbooks of recent editions, however, only two books, belonging to different collections incorporate considerations about nanotechnology and nanoscience in their approaches. We focus our analysis on three aspects, namely: the place dedicated to approaches to nanoscience and nanotechnology, notions about technology and its contributions to critical scientific education. This is a qualitative research; it was used as conceptual approaches the Philosophy of Technology, The Discourse Analysis (DA) and Science, Technology, Society (STS) concepts. We found that in two examined textbooks the approaches to nanoscience and nanotechnology is a complementary description of modern physics, associated with quantum theory. In this context, the concepts of nanoscience and nanotechnology focus superficially in the genesis of the field and some possible areas of applications. It was not identified in all textbooks warnings about the potential risks to human health and the environment from the use of nanotechnology and nanoscience. We understand that textbooks approaches about nanotechnology and nanoscience round a instrumental technological perspective, however keep away from the scientific and technological critical education.

The Matt Christopher Papers consist of published manuscripts, published short stories (1943-1994) (drafts, synopses, plot outlines, and magazines, comics, and newspapers with articles and short stories), galleys (1954-1990s), leather bound author’s editions (1954-1991), and publisher’s editions of Matt Christopher’s children’s books (1954-2004). The collection contains many unpublished manuscripts and drafts outside the children’s book field (1954-1997), unpublished poems (1938-1993), unpublished screenplays (1940-1997), and unpublished short stories (1954-1997). Also included are taped (audio and video) interviews of Matt Christopher, as well as, puzzles for children (1988-1992), research materials and notes (1954-1997), sports rule-books (1954-1995), and writing guides (1909-1995), personal (1949-1997) and business correspondence (1952-2002), contract agreements (1952-1993), royalty statements (1954-1999), and biographical information (1917-2004), memorabilia (personalized baseball bat, framed pictures and award certificates, etc.), fan mail (1964-1999) and his personal book collection (1847-1995) (some signed by authors).

The collection includes personal photographs, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, research and information on specific foods, recipes, drafts and published editions of manuscripts, class notes and student files. There is also information concerning the American Dietetic Association, the South Carolina Dietetic Association, the Piedmont Dietetic Association, the American Home Economics Association, and the South Carolina Home Economics Association, including conference material, memos, and correspondence. Miss London was president of the South Carolina Dietetic Association in 1967.

Active site mutants of human secreted Group IIA Phospholipase A(2) lacking hydrolytic activity retain their bactericidal effect

The Human Secreted Group IIA Phospholipase A(2) (hsPIA2GIIA) presents potent bactericidal activity, and is considered to contribute to the acute-phase immune response. Hydrolysis of inner membrane phospholipids is suggested to underlie the bactericidal activity, and we have evaluated this proposal by comparing catalytic activity with bactericidal and liposome membrane damaging effects of the G30S, H48Q and D49K h5PLA2GIIA mutants. All mutants showed severely impaired hydrolytic activities against mixed DOPC:DOPG liposome membranes, however the bactericidal effect against Micrococcus luteus was less affected, with 50% killing at concentrations of 1, 3, 7 and 9 mu g/mL for the wild-type, D49K, H48Q and G30S mutants respectively. Furthermore, all proteins showed Ca2+-independent damaging activity against Liposome membranes demonstrating that in addition to the hydrolysis-dependent membrane damage, the hsPLA2GIIA presents a mechanism for permeabilization of phospholipid bilayers that is independent of catalytic activity, which may play a role in the bactericidal function of the protein (C) 2011 Elsevier Masson SAS. Into the Island: A new technique of non-invasive cortical stimulation of the insula

Study aim. - We describe a new neuronavigation-guided technique to target the posterior-superior insula (PSI) using a cooled-double-cone coil for deep cortical stimulation. Introduction. - Despite the analgesic effects brought about by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the primary motor and prefrontal cortices, a significant proportion of patients remain symptomatic. This encouraged the search for new targets that may provide stronger pain relief. There is growing evidence that the posterior insula is implicated in the integration of painful stimuli in different pain syndromes and in homeostatic thermal integration. Methods. - The primary motor cortex representation of the lower leg was used to calculate the motor threshold and thus, estimate the intensity of PSI stimulation. Results. - Seven healthy volunteers were stimulated at 10 Hz to the right PSI and showed subjective changes in cold perception. The technique was safe and well tolerated. Conclusions. - The right posterior-superior insula is worth being considered in future studies as a possible target for rTMS stimulation in chronic pain patients. (c) 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS.
