IPH developed this report for the Centre for Effective Services (CES). The report explores learning from evaluations of 10 programmes operated as part of the Prevention and Early Intervention Initative funded by Atlantic Philanthropies and others. The report provides insights into the outcomes of prevention and early intervention initiatives relevant to early child development, school-based programmes and the integration of child services. BACKGROUND: The second Swiss Multicenter Adolescent Survey on Health (SMASH02) was conducted among a representative sample (n = 7428) of students and apprentices aged 16 to 20 from the three language areas of Switzerland during the year 2002. This paper reports on health needs expressed by adolescents and their use of health care services over the 12 months preceding the survey. METHODS: Nineteen cantons representing 80% of the resident population agreed to participate. A complex iterative random cluster sample of 600 classes was drawn with classes as primary sampling unit. The participation rate was 97.7% for the classes and 99.8% for the youths in attendance. The self-administered questionnaire included 565 items. The median rate of item non-response was 1.8%. Ethical and legal requirements applying to surveys of adolescent populations were respected. RESULTS: Overall more than 90% of adolescents felt in good to excellent health. Suffering often or very often from different physical complaints or pain was also reported such as headache (boys: 15.9%, girls: 37.4%), stomach-ache (boys: 9.7%, girls: 30.0%), joint pain (boys: 24.7%, girls: 29.5%) or back pain (boys: 24.3%, girls: 34.7%). Many adolescents reported a need for help on psychosocial and lifestyle issues, such as stress (boys: 28.5%, girls: 47.7%) or depression (boys: 18.9%, girls: 34.4%). Although about 75% of adolescents reported having consulted a general practitioner and about one-third having seen another specialist, reported reasons for visits do not correspond to the expressed needs. Less than 10% of adolescents had visited a psychiatrist, a family planning centre or a social worker. CONCLUSIONS: The reported rates of health services utilisation by adolescents does not match the substantial reported needs for help in various areas. This may indicate that the corresponding problems are not adequately detected and/or addressed by professionals from the health and social sectors.

Much of the attention around OERs has been on institutional projects which make explicit learning content available. These can be classified as 'big OER' but another form of OER is that of small scale, individually produced resources using web 2.0 type services, which are classified as 'little OER'. This paper examines some of the differences between the use of these two types of OER to highlight issues in open education. These include attitudes towards reputation, the intentionality of the resource, models of sustainability, the implicit affordances of resources and the context of their hosting sites.

This case study introduces our continuous work to enhance the virtual classroom in order to provide faculty and students with an environment open to their needs, compliant with learning standards and, therefore compatible with other e-learning environments, and based on open source software. The result is a modulable, sustainable and interoperable learning environment that can be adapted to different teaching and learning situations by incorporating the LMS integrated tools as well as wikis, blogs, forums and Moodle activities among others.

A partir de diferents enquestes de satisfacció institucional i de l'anàlisi de l'arxiu 'log' del servidor de la biblioteca respecte a l'ús i al comportament dels usuaris, es va detectar que cada cop era més complex accedir als continguts i serveis de manera proporcional al creixement d'aquests darrers i de l'augment del nombre d'usuaris. El creixement dels recursos i de les diferents aplicacions desenvolupats a la Biblioteca Virtual de la UOC (BUOC) va fer necessari la selecció i la implementació d'un motor de cerca que facilités de manera global l'accés als recursos d'informació i als serveis oferts a la comunitat virtual de la UOC d'acord amb la tipologia d'usuari, l'idioma i el seu entorn d'aprenentatge. En aquest article s'exposa el procés d'anàlisi de diferents productes i la implementació de Verity a la BUOC amb els desenvolupaments realitzats en les diferents aplicacions perquè el motor de cerca pugui fer la seva funció.

La Biblioteca Virtual, és el resultat de l'entorn d'aprenentatge i de model pedagògic dissenyat per a la comunitat virtual de la UOC que fa imprescindible la creació, disseny i organització de serveis bibliotecaris àgils i adaptats al perfil de l'usuari virtual, i amb la capacitat d'anticipar-se a les seves necessitats.

The Department of Health of the Government of Andalusia provides professionals of the Andalusian Public Health Care System a collaborative working environment (Entorno colaborativo de trabajo [ECT]) based on the principles of web 2.0. The ECT is organized into communities, understood as sets of people with a common interest who share a space with its own information and collaboration tools. This space is managed and powered autonomously by the communities themselves. This paper analyzes the use and degree of implementation of the ECT, considering the user communities and activity statistics in 2009 and 2010. From the data obtained we deduce that instrumental services have easier acceptance than collaboration and knowledge management services; content generation is focused on a small number of users; and communities associated with organizational units have less development than those associated with work areas or projects.

L'increment d'ús del préstec interbibliotecari i l'obtenció de documents (PI/SOD) obria, en el si del Consorci de Biblioteques Universitàries de Catalunya, un debat de com millorar la seva accessibilitat i gestió, especialment de cara a l'usuari que havia d'utilitzar diferents aplicatius en el procés de sol·licitar documents en PI/SOD. Fruit d'aquesta reflexió, s'ha realitzat un nou pas en la millora i consolidació d'aquest servei, integrant dins de la interfície de consulta per web del Catàleg Col·lectiu de les Universitats de Catalunya la possibilitat de demanar els documents en línia tant sols entrant la identificació d'usuari. L'Aplicació desenvolupada en PL-SQL per la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya dins del projecte GALA (Global Access to Local Applications and services), permet la captura automàtica de les dades del registre bibliogràfic i la seva exportació al formulari de PI/SOD de la institució a la que pertany l'usuari, generant una comanda que finalment és validada per la institució.

Es presenta el concepte de biblioteca virtual tal com es desenvolupa a la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya una institució d'educació a distància que proporciona educació universitària. La UOC basa l'organització del seu model educatiu en l'explotació del paradigma del Campus Virtual i en l'ús de les darreres tecnologies disponibles en telemàtica, ordinadors personals i multimèdia. En aquest context, la Biblioteca Virtual de la UOC s'ofereix com un nou model del servei de biblioteca, flexible i dissenyat de manera que els usuaris puguin aprofitar-se de les noves tecnologies de la informació i accedir a les dades registrades i emmagatzemades a qualsevol lloc del món.

The Open University of Catalonia (UOC) has conducted a study of operability of its user interfaces, creating for this purpose different work groups that have analyzed different casuistries. One of these groups focused on the study and analysis of the usability of the Virtual Library's website, with the objective of obtaining benefits for our users. As a result of this analysis, an important qualitative jump is occurring in the new implementation of the website of the UOC's Virtual Library, prioritizing the role of users from different points of view: ease of navigation, management of profiles and the services associated to these and the restructuring of the information architecture, with the final aim of facilitating access to the resources and the services offered from the Library, advocating in this way for their quality and improvement.

SAVIA (Servei d'AVIsos Adhoc) és un sistema compost per una sèrie de programes en PERL desenvolupats per la Biblioteca de la UOC que gestionen la tramesa per correu electrònic dels avisos de retorn de préstec dels documents de la Biblioteca, mitjançant els programes de l'aplicatiu VTLS destinats a la creació de les notificacions impreses. Aquests programes flexibilitzen la comunicació entre la Biblioteca i els usuaris donat que permeten el tractament individualitzat de les trameses per tipologies d'usuari i la incorporació d'addendes temporals als missatges, definides i controlades per la persona propietària del procés del préstec.
