A total synthesis of phomactin G (3), which is a central intermediate in the biosynthesis of phomactin A (5) in Phoma sp. is described. The synthesis is based on a Cr(II)/Ni(II) macrocyclisation from the aldehyde vinyl iodide 9, leading to 16, followed by sequential conversion of 16 into the -epoxide 21 and the ketone 25 which, on deprotection, led to (±)-phomactin G. Phomactin G (3) shares an interesting structural homology with phomactin D (2), the most potent PAF-antagonist metabolite in Phoma sp. It is most likely converted into phomactin A (5), by initial allylic oxidation to the transient -alcohol phomactin structure 4, known as Sch 49028, followed by spontaneous pyran ring formation.

The first convergent synthesis of the tricyclic skeleton of huperzine A is described and includes, as the key step, an efficient regioselective intramolecular Heck reaction of 2-(tert-butyldimethylsillyoxymethyl)-6-(2-methoxy-5-bromopyridin-6-yl)methylcyclohex-2-enol.

Several studies have suggested that men with raised plasma triglycerides (TGs) in combination with adverse levels of other lipids may be at special risk of subsequent ischemic heart disease (IHD). We examined the independent and combined effects of plasma lipids at 10 years of follow-up. We measured fasting TGs, total cholesterol (TC), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) in 4362 men (aged 45 to 63 years) from 2 study populations and reexamined them at intervals during a 10-year follow-up. Major IHD events (death from IHD, clinical myocardial infarction, or ECG-defined myocardial infarction) were recorded. Five hundred thirty-three major IHD events occurred. All 3 lipids were strongly and independently predictive of IHD after 10 years of follow-up. Subjects were then divided into 27 groups (ie, 33) by the tertiles of TGs, TC, and HDLC. The number of events observed in each group was compared with that predicted by a logistic regression model, which included terms for the 3 lipids (without interactions) and potential confounding variables. The effects of electron correlation and second-order terms on theoretical total cross sections of transfer ionization in collisions of the helium atom with fast H+, He2+ and Li3+ ions are studied and reported. The total cross sections are calculated using highly correlated wavefunctions with expansion of the transition amplitude in the Born series through the second order. The results of these calculations are in sensible agreement with experimental data.

Simple electron capture processes are studied using an orthonormal two state continuum-distorted-wave (CDW) basis. The suitability of the basis set is tested by comparing predictions for total and differential cross sections with available experimental data. Overall good agreement is obtained and the authors conclude that a relatively small CDW basis set may be suitable to model a wide variety of low-energy collisions if the members of this extended set are astutely chosen.

The propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP's) is studied using a photon scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM) and conventional attenuated total reflection (ATR). The PSTM experiment uses localized (focused beam) launching or SPP's at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. Propagation of the SPP is observed as an exponentially decaying tail beyond the launch site acid the 1/e propagation length is measured directly for a series of Ag films of different thicknesses. The ATR measurements are used to characterize the thin film optical and thickness parameters, revealing, notably, the presence of a contaminating adlayer of Ag2S of typical dielectric function, 8.7 + i2.7, and thickness 1-2 nm. Values of the SPP propagation length, based on the ATR- derived film parameters used in the four-media implicit SPP dispersion relation, show very good agreement with those based on the PSTM images for the case of undercoupled or optimally coupled SPP modes. The observed propagation lengths are quantitatively analyzed taking explicit account of additional intrinsic damping due to the growth of the Ag2S layer and of reradiation of the SPP back into the prism outside the launch site. Finally, the PSTM images show excellent SPP beam confinement in the original propagation direction.
