Composite electrodes were prepared using graphite powder and silicone rubber in different compositions. The use of such hydrophopic materials interned to diminish the swallowing observed in other cases when the electrodes are used in aqueous solutions for a long time. The composite was characterized for the response reproducibility, ohmic resistance, thermal behavior and active area. The voltammetric response in relation to analytes with known voltammetric behavior was also evaluated, always in comparison with the glassy carbon. The 70% (graphite, w/w) composite electrode was used in the quantitative determination of hydroquinone (HQ) in a DPV procedure in which a detection limit of 5.1 x 10(-8) mol L-1 was observed. EPR spectra of 5- and 16-doxyl stearic acid nitroxide probes (5-DSA and 16-DSA, respectively) bound to bovine serum albumin (BSA) revealed that in the presence of ionic surfactants, at least, two label populations coexist in equilibrium. The rotational correlation times (tau) indicated that component I displays a more restricted mobility state, associated to the spin labels bound to the protein; the less immobilized component 2 is due to label localization in the surfactant aggregates. For both probes, the increase of surfactant concentration leads to higher motional levels of component 1 followed by a simultaneous decrease of this fraction of nitroxides and its conversion into component 2. For 10 mM cethyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), the nitroxides are 100% bound to the protein, whereas at 10mM N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (HPS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) the fractions of bound nitroxides are reduced to 18% and 86%, respectively. No significant polarity changes were observed in the whole surfactant concentration range for component 1. Moreover, at higher surfactant concentration, component 2 exhibited a similar polarity as in the pure surfactant micelles. For 16-DSA the surfactant effect is different: at 10mM of HPS and CTAC the fractions of bound nitroxides are 76% and 49%, respectively, while at 10 mM SDS they are present exclusively in a micellar environment, consistent with 100% of component 2. Overall, both SDS and HPS are able to effectively displace the nitroxide probes from the protein binding sites. while CTAC seems to affect the nitroxide binding to a significantly smaller extent. The purpose of this essay is using theories about labeling and social bonds to study whether a measure of rehabilitation for the psychically disabled contributes to a return to a normal status as not-labeled. Partly we examine whether the activities organized by the regulation-ruled authorities during the work of rehabilitation lead to shame or pride, and partly how these activities are organized regarding the processes that lead to the emotions pride or shame among the participants. Method: qualitative semi-structured face-to-face interviews with professional rehabilitation-actors at the Public Employment Office (PEO), the Social Insurance Office (SIO), the Social Service (SOS), the Psychiatry and the Division of Labour Market (AME).Conclusions: the Psychiatry clients are treated with respect, may participate, and communication is characterized by attunement, therefore strong social bonds can be built. On the contrary, among the other examined activities, we found many elements that arouse shame. Since these are more ruled by regulations, the result is engulfment and demands on conformity, because the compromise-possibilities are almost non-existent. Psychically disabled persons are met by prejudice, ignorance, disrespect and a non-solidarity-language. To get help, the individual has to accept a label in form of a diagnosis, and this labeling leads to a negative self-image. Furthermore the psychically disabled persons are falling between two chairs because of a weak cooperation between the rehabilitation-actors. Bimodal alienation and triangulation contributes to the difficulties in cooperation.Result: the social bonds are not strong enough to achieve a rehabilitation-effect. Even if the treatment from each administrator is important, we find the explanation-level primarily in laws, rules and government, because the structure rules the rehabilitation-measures, with shame as a consequence. Since we found elements of shame institutionalized in the way of working at PEO, SIO, SOS and AME, it means that social bonds can never reach a level good enough for achieving pride and normalization from a deviance or labeled identity.

Abstract In a case study about viewing habits in a Swedish audience I sampled 309 questionnaires; interviews with five focus group were conducted together with ten in-depth individual interviews discussing altogether fifteen favorite films exploring specific scenes of idiosyncratic relevance. The outcome supports claims about viewers as active and playful (cf. Höijer 1998, Frampton 2006, Hoover 2006, Plantinga 2009). In line with mediatization theory I also argue that spiritual meaning making takes place through mediated experiences and I support theories about fiction films as important sources for moral and spiritual reflection (Partridge 2004, Zillman 2005, Lynch 2007, Plantinga 2009). What Hjarvard calls the soft side of mediatization processes (2008) is illustrated showing adults experiencing enchantment through favorite films (Jerslev 2006, Partridge 2008, Klinger 2008, Oliver & Hartmann 2010). Vernacular meaning making embedded in everyday life and spectators dealing with fiction narratives such as Gladiator, Amelie from Montmartre or Avatar highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding of elevated cinematic experiences. The reported impact of specific movies is analyzed through theories where cognition and affect are central aspects of spectators’ engagements with a film (Tan 1996, Caroll 1999, Grodal 2009). Crucially important are theories of meaning-making where viewers’ detailed interpretation of specific scenes are embedded in high-level meaning-making where world view issues and spectators’ moral frameworks are activated (Zillman 2005, Andersson & Andersson 2005, Frampton 2006, Lynch 2007, Avila 2007, Axelson 2008, Plantinga 2009). Also results from a growing body of empirical oriented research in film studies are relevant with an interest in what happens with the flesh and blood spectator exposed to filmic narratives (Jerslev 2006, Klinger 2008, Barker 2009, Suckfüll 2010, Oliver & Hartmann 2010). Analyzing the qualitative results of my case study, I want to challenge the claim that the viewer has to suspend higher order reflective cognitive structures in order to experience suture (Butler & Palesh 2004). What I find in my empirical examples is responses related to spectators’ highest levels of mental activity, all anchored in the sensual-emotional apparatus (Grodal 2009). My outcome is in line with a growing number of empirical case studies which support conclusions that both thinking and behavior are affected by film watching (Marsh 2007, Sückfull 2010, Oliver & Hartmann 2010, Axelson forthcoming). The presentation contributes to a development of concepts which combines aesthetic, affective and cognitive components in an investigation of spectator’s moves from emotional evaluation of intra-text narration to extra-textual assessments, testing the narrative for larger significance in idiosyncratic ways (Bordwell & Thompson 1997, Marsh 2007, Johnston 2007, Bruun Vaage 2009, Axelson 2011). There are a several profitable concepts suggested to embrace the complex interplay between affects, cognition and emotions when individuals respond to fictional narratives. Robert K. Johnston label it “deepening gaze” (2007: 307) and “transformative viewing” (2007: 305). Philosopher Mitch Avila proposes “high cognition” (2007: 228) and Casper Thybjerg ”higher meaning” (2008: 60). Torben Grodal talks about “feelings of deep meaning” (Grodal 2009: 149). With a nod to Clifford Geertz, Craig Detweiler adopts “thick description” (2007: 47) as do Kutter Callaway altering it to ”thick interpretations” (Callaway 2013: 203). Frampton states it in a paradox; ”affective intelligence” (Frampton 2006: 166). As a result of the empirical investigation, inspired by Geertz, Detweiler & Callaway, I advocate thick viewing for capturing the viewing process of these specific moments of film experience when profound and intensified emotional interpretations take place. The author As a sociologist of religion, Tomas Axelsons research deals with people’s use of mediated narratives to make sense of reality in a society characterized by individualization, mediatization and pluralized world views. Denna studie syftar till att undersöka om det finns ett samband mellan designfaktorer och prisklass på rödvinsetiketter. För att kartlägga förekommande designfaktorer har en visuell innehållsanalys gjorts inom tre olika prisklasser hämtad från Systembolagets hemsida. Utifrån den visuella innehållsanalysens resultat designades tre vinetiketter för varje prisklass. För att ta reda på om dessa designfaktorer hade ett samband med den tänkta prisklassen testades vinetiketterna mot konsumenter genom en webbenkät. Slutsatsen var att det fanns vissa generella drag som skiljer prisklasserna åt även om många designfaktorer var vanligt förekommande för alla prisklasser. Utifrån respondenternas svar visade sig vissa av designfaktorerna vara mer eller mindre tydliga för den tilltänkta prisklassen.

Föreliggande studie syftar till att kartlägga vilka designfaktorer som främst förekommer på etiketter hos framgångsrika aleproducenter från olika länder, samt undersöka om konsumenter kan urskilja produktionsland endast genom granskning av etiketten. För att undersöka detta genomfördes en visuell innehållsanalys för att ta fram designfaktorer för fem utvalda länder, varefter fem typexempel skapades. Typexemplen testades på konsumenter via en webbenkät. Slutsatsen är att det i vissa fall går att ta fram ett typexempel och i vissa fall kan en del av konsumenterna se vilket det tänkta produktionslandet är. I majoriteten av fallen gick det emellertid inte att ta fram ett perfekt typexempel och konsumenten kunde inte urskilja det tänkta produktionslandet.

The photolytic phenanthrene-based precursors for both β-methoxycarbene and β-ethoxycarbene were synthesized with and without a deuterium label attached to the a carbon. The incorporation of this deuterium label allowed distinction between a 1, 2-H shift and a 1, 2-O shift pathway to the respective alkyl vinyl ether, without the influence of a primary kinetic isotope effect. Photolyses of these precursors gave rearrangement products of the expected β-alkoxycarbenes. In the case of β-methoxycarbene, no methyl vinyl ether was observed due to its volatility. However, the appearance of aldehyde peaks in the NMR spectra, from an apparent further rearrangement to acetaldehyde through an enol intermediate, indicated that a 1,2-H shift had occurred. Ethyl vinyl ether was isolated following the photolysis of the β-ethoxycarbene precursor. Quantification of the two pathways showed less than 2% undergoing an ethoxy shift to the ethyl vinyl ether. Yield experiments on this photolysis demonstrated a maximum yield of β-ethoxycarbene as 43%, though this decreased as the experiment continued. Computational work on the β-ethoxycarbene system indicates that the triplet scate is more stable than the singlet. In addition, the activation energy to the 1.2-H shift pathway is remarkably low and is clearly consistent with the observed overwhelming preference for this pathway in the experiment.

I begin by citing a definition of "third wave" from the glossary in Turbo Chicks: Talking Young Feminisms at length because it communicates several key issues that I develop in this project. The definition introduces a tension within "third wave" feminism of building and differentiating itself from second wave feminism, the newness of the term "third wave," its association with "young" women, complexity of contemporary feminisms, and attention to multiple identities and oppressions. Uncovering explanations of "third wave" feminism that go beyond, like this one, generational associations, is not an easy task. Authors consistently group new feminist voices together by age under the label "third wave" feminists without questioning the accuracy of the designation. Most explorations of "third wave" feminism overlook the complexities and distinctions that abound among "young" feminists ; not all young feminists espouse similar ideas, tactics, and actions; and for various reasons, not all young feminists identify with a "third wave" of feminism. Less than a year after I began to learn about feminism I discovered Barbara Findlen's Listen Up: Voices From the Next Feminist Generation. Although the collection nor its contributors declare association with "third wave" feminism, consequent reviews and citations in articles identify it, along with Rebecca Walker's To Be Real: Telling the Truth and Changing the Voice of Feminism, as a major text of "third wave" feminism. Re-reading Listen Up since beginning to research "third wave" feminism, I now understand its fundamental influence on my research questions as a starting point for assessing persistent exclusion in contemporary feminism, rather than as a revolutionary text (as it is claimed to be in many reviews). Findlen begins the introduction with the bold claim, "My feminism wasn't shaped by antiwar or civil rights activism ..." (xi). Framing the collection with a disavowal of the influence women of color's organizational efforts negates, for me, the project's proclaimed commitment to multivocality. Though several contributions examine persistent exclusion within contemporary feminist movement, the larger project seems to rely on these essays to reflect this commitment, suggesting that Listen Up does not go beyond the "add and stir" approach to "diversity." Interestingly, this statement does not appear in the new edition of Listen Up published in 2001. And the content has changed with this new edition, including several more Latina contributors and other "corrective" additions.

An increasing interest in society towards environmental and ecological issues have beaconed consumer¿s behavior research, particularly the ones related to the identification of the impact of environmental agendas on consumer habits. The objective of the present study is to attitudes related to brands, advertising and purchase intention. The study was based on data gathered through a ¿between subjects¿ experimental research, with three levels of manipulation. One hundred and sixty eight students from the city of Rio de Janeiro were selected for the experiment. The hypothesis suggested that subjects who were exposed to ecological cues demonstrate a more favorable behavior towards advertising attitude (H1A), brand attitude (H1B) and purchase intentions (H1C) than the ones who were not. In addition, an intrinsic health cue called ¿Omega 3¿ was introduced to the experiment to enhance the results of the research. The results have shown that subjects are indifferent to ecological cues regarding their attitudes towards the advertising and purchase intention. However, the study determined a more favorable attitude towards the brand by subjects exposed to the ecological cue. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that although ecological cues exposed in advertisements do not result on an increase of a positive of the product label is enhanced positively due to the relation of the brand with environmentally sound practices.

Este trabalho analisou os portadores de cartão tipo Private Label do Carrefour, a segunda maior organização varejista do mundo. Foram coletados dados de uma amostra de 400 clientes, com o fim de construir um modelo empírico de Satisfação e Lealdade. Em seguida, foi utilizada a técnica de Análise de Sobrevivência para construir um modelo preditivo de risco de perda de clientes, que se mostrou efetivo na prevenção do atrito. Não se encontra aplicação desta técnica emergente para o problema da deserção de clientes. Os resultados mostram que a classe social dos clientes atua sobre a Satisfação, a Lealdade Atitudinal, e o Uso de meios de pagamento dos clientes pesquisados.

We outline possible actions to be adopted by the European Union to ensure a better share of total coffee revenues to producers in developing countries. The way to this translates, ultimately, in producers receiving a fair price for the commodity they supply, i.e., a market price that results from fair market conditions in the whole coffee producing chain. We plead for proposals to take place in the consuming countries, as market conditions in the consuming-countries side of the coffee producing chain are not fair; market failures and ingenious distortions are responsible for the enormous asymmetry of gains in the two sides. The first of three proposals for consumer government supported actions is to help in the creation of domestic trading companies for achieving higher export volumes. These tradings would be associated to roasters that, depending on the final product envisaged, could perform the roasting in the country and export the roasted – and sometimes ground – coffee, breaking the increasing importers-exporters verticalisation. Another measure would be the systematic provision of basic intelligence on the consuming markets. Statistics of the quantities sold according to mode of consumption, by broad “categories of coffee” and point of sale, could be produced for each country. They should be matched to the exports/imports data and complemented by (aggregate) country statistics on the roasting sector. This would extremely help producing countries design their own market and producing strategies. Finally, a fund, backed by a common EU tax on roasted coffee – created within the single market tax harmonisation programme, is suggested. This European Coffee Fund would have two main projects. Together with the ICO, it would launch an advertising campaign on coffee in general, aimed at counterbalancing the increasing “brandification” of coffee. Basic information on the characteristics of the plant and the drink would be passed, and the effort could be extended to the future Eastern European members of the Union, as a further assurance that EU processors would not have a too privileged access to these new markets. A quality label for every coffee sold in the Union could complement this initiative, helping to create a level playing field for products from outside the EU. A second project would consist in a careful diversification effort, to take place in selected producing countries.

A gestão da cadeia de suprimentos das marcas próprias deve estar alinhada com as prioridades do consumidor final, o seu último elo, para que todas as organizações envolvidas possam ter sucesso. Esta pesquisa investigou este alinhamento no setor brasileiro de supermercados identificando pontos críticos de atenção para os gestores das organizações envolvidas, principalmente os supermercadistas que lideram o processo. Foram realizados três estudos de caso de cadeia (biscoitos, leite longa vida e xampu) e uma pesquisa quantitativa com 843 consumidores. Os resultados indicam que a gestão da cadeia, dirigida pelos supermercadistas poderia ser melhorada em vários aspectos como a preocupação com a redução de variabilidade de qualidade percebida pelo consumidor e a gestão do relacionamento fornecedor supermercadista que se inicia com uma perspectiva mais colaborativa e de longo prazo, mas evolui para um relacionamento transacional semelhante aos demais produtos comercializados.

A Internet é responsável pelo surgimento de um novo paradigma de televisão – IPTV (Televisão sobre IP). Este serviço distingue-se de outros modelos de televisão, pois permite aos utilizadores um elevado grau de interactividade, com um controlo personalizado sobre os conteúdos a que pretende assistir. Possibilita ainda a oferta de um número ilimitado de canais, bem como o acesso a conteúdos de Vídeo on Demand (VoD). O IPTV apresenta diversas funcionalidades suportadas por uma arquitectura complexa e uma rede convergente que serve de integração a serviços de voz, dados e vídeo. A tecnologia IPTV explora ao máximo as características da Internet, com a utilização de mecanismos de Qualidade de Serviço. Surge ainda como uma revolução dentro do panorama televisivo, abrindo portas a novos investimentos por parte das empresas de telecomunicações. A Internet também permite fazer chamadas telefónicas sobre a rede IP. Este serviço é denominado VoIP (Voz sobre IP) e encontra-se em funcionamento já há algum tempo. Desta forma surge a oportunidade de poder oferecer ao consumidor final, um serviço que inclua os serviços de Internet, de VoIP e de IPTV denominado serviço Triple Play. O serviço Triple Play veio obrigar a revisão de toda a rede de transporte de forma a preparar a mesma para suportar este serviço de uma forma eficiente (QoS), resiliente (recuperação de falhas) e optimizado (Engenharia de tráfego). Em redes de telecomunicações, tanto a quebra de uma ligação como a congestão nas redes pode interferir nos serviços oferecidos aos consumidores finais. Mecanismos de sobrevivência são aplicados de forma a garantir a continuidade do serviço mesmo na ocorrência de uma falha. O objectivo desta dissertação é propor uma solução de uma arquitectura de rede capaz de suportar o serviço Triple Play de uma forma eficiente, resiliente e optimizada através de um encaminhamento óptimo ou quase óptimo. No âmbito deste trabalho, é realizada a análise do impacto das estratégias de encaminhamento que garantem a eficiência, sobrevivência e optimização das redes IP existentes, bem como é determinado o número limite de clientes permitido numa situação de pico de uma dada rede. Neste trabalho foram abordados os conceitos de Serviços Triple Play, Redes de Acesso, Redes Núcleo, Qualidade de Serviço, MPLS (Multi-Protocolo Label Switching), Engenharia de Tráfego e Recuperação de falhas. As conclusões obtidas das simulações efectuadas através do simulador de rede NS-2.33 (Network Simulator versão 2.33) serviram para propor a solução da arquitectura de uma rede capaz de suportar o serviço Triple Play de uma forma eficiente, resiliente e optimizada.
