Laser-assisted chemical vapour deposition (LCVD) has been extensively studied in the last two decades. A vast range of applications encompass various areas such as microelectronics, micromechanics, microelectromechanics and integrated optics, and a variety of metals, semiconductors and insulators have been grown by LCVD. In this article, we review briefly the LCVD process and present two case studies of thin film deposition related to laser thermal excitation (e.g., boron carbide) and non-thermal excitation (e.g., CrO(2)) of the gas phase.

Electrical resistivity, transverse magnetoresistance and thermoelectric power measurements were performed on CuS high quality single crystals in the range 1.2-300 K and under fields of up to 16 T. The zero field resistivity data are well described below 55 K by a quasi-2D model, consistent with a carrier confinement at lower temperatures, before the transition to the superconducting state. The transverse magnetoresistance develops mainly below 30 K and attains values as large as 470% for a 16 T field at 5 K, this behaviour being ascribed to a band effect mechanism, with a possible magnetic field induced DOS change at the Fermi level. The transverse magnetoresistance shows no signs of saturation, following a power law with field Delta rho/rho(0) proportional to H(1.4), suggesting the existence of open orbits for carriers at the Fermi surface. The thermoelectric power shows an unusual temperature dependence, probably as a result of the complex band structure of CuS.

We consider a simple model consisting of particles with four bonding sites ("patches"), two of type A and two of type B, on the square lattice, and investigate its global phase behavior by simulations and theory. We set the interaction between B patches to zero and calculate the phase diagram as the ratio between the AB and the AA interactions, epsilon(AB)*, varies. In line with previous work, on three-dimensional off-lattice models, we show that the liquid-vapor phase diagram exhibits a re-entrant or "pinched" shape for the same range of epsilon(AB)*, suggesting that the ratio of the energy scales - and the corresponding empty fluid regime - is independent of the dimensionality of the system and of the lattice structure. In addition, the model exhibits an order-disorder transition that is ferromagnetic in the re-entrant regime. The use of low-dimensional lattice models allows the simulation of sufficiently large systems to establish the nature of the liquid-vapor critical points and to describe the structure of the liquid phase in the empty fluid regime, where the size of the "voids" increases as the temperature decreases. We have found that the liquid-vapor critical point is in the 2D Ising universality class, with a scaling region that decreases rapidly as the temperature decreases. The results of simulations and theoretical analysis suggest that the line of order-disorder transitions intersects the condensation line at a multi-critical point at zero temperature and density, for patchy particle models with a re-entrant, empty fluid, regime. The subject matter of this book is about piano methodology, including technical, musical, artistic, ethical and philosophical issues and reflections. The purpose of this work is to share a personal professional experience insight in the field of piano performance. This text assumes a certain continuity to the major contributions of artists like Ludwig Deppe, Tobias Matthay, Grigory Kogan, Heinrich Neuhaus and George Kochevitsky. At the same time, it tries to integrate and complement this selected literature, bringing new ideas and hints to specific professional issues.

Thin films of TiO2 were doped with Au by ion implantation and in situ during the deposition. The films were grown by reactive magnetron sputtering and deposited in silicon and glass substrates at a temperature around 150 degrees C. The undoped films were implanted with Au fiuences in the range of 5 x 10(15) Au/cm(2)-1 x 10(17) Au/cm(2) with a energy of 150 keV. At a fluence of 5 x 10(16) Au/cm(2) the formation of Au nanoclusters in the films is observed during the implantation at room temperature. The clustering process starts to occur during the implantation where XRD estimates the presence of 3-5 nm precipitates. After annealing in a reducing atmosphere, the small precipitates coalesce into larger ones following an Ostwald ripening mechanism. In situ XRD studies reveal that Au atoms start to coalesce at 350 degrees C, reaching the precipitates dimensions larger than 40 nm at 600 degrees C. Annealing above 700 degrees C promotes drastic changes in the Au profile of in situ doped films with the formation of two Au rich regions at the interface and surface respectively. The optical properties reveal the presence of a broad band centered at 550 nm related to the plasmon resonance of gold particles visible in AFM maps. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A escola é o centro de convergência que justifica e fundamenta os recursos alocados ao sistema educativo. Durante o normal funcionamento das escolas, as condições de segurança, salubridade dos edifícios e equipamentos devem ser previstas e mantidas para garantir a salvaguarda da saúde e bem-estar dos seus ocupantes. A responsabilidade sobre estas questões encontra-se transferida para os Órgãos de Gestão dos estabelecimentos educativos. Neste âmbito efectuou-se um estudo que objectivou caracterizar a organização e a gestão escolar, no contexto da segurança, higiene e saúde; conhecer a forma da organização e da gestão da emergência nos estabelecimentos de ensino e o grau de satisfação dos gestores escolares relativamente aspectos relacionados com a Segurança, Higiene e Saúde. Neste sentido, foi aplicado um inquérito por questionário on-line, dirigido aos directores dos agrupamentos de escolas e escolas únicas da Região Norte de Portugal. Na generalidade os resultados obtidos demonstraram que ao nível da organização e gestão da emergência é evidenciada alguma preocupação, constatando-se no entanto, que nem todas as escolas possuam delegado de segurança, algumas não possuem plano de segurança, apenas metade evidenciou a existência de projectos educativos em áreas relacionadas com a temática e não existe ainda uma participação efectiva no seio escolar por parte da comunidade. Os gestores escolares, relativamente ao grau de satisfação, referiram as condições das infra-estruturas e estado de conservação dos estabelecimentos escolares, como factores de maior descontentamento. Percepcionou-se que a gestão escolar é centrada nos problemas do quotidiano, não existindo uma planificação ou um programa legitimado de segurança, higiene e saúde a longo prazo. A análise à actuação do gestor escolar face à segurança e higiene, não pode efectuar-se alheia e separadamente do actual regime de autonomia, administração e gestão dos estabelecimentos públicos da educação pré-escolar e dos ensinos básico e secundário, porque o desempenho dos diferentes actores no processo educativo é por si condicionada. Cabe ao gestor escolar, na figura do Director(a) consagrar a segurança, higiene e saúde integradas na dinâmica escolar, promovendo um ambiente escolar mais saudável e seguro.

Objectivo: Descrever a intervenção em fisioterapia aplicada num paciente com o diagnóstico de entorse da Tíbio-társica de grau III. Participantes e Métodos: Paciente que em 1 de Dezembro de 2009 na sequência de uma disputa de bola, sofreu uma entorse da tíbio-társica. Iniciou fisioterapia a 4 de Janeiro de 2010, tendo sido utilizadas para o tratamento técnicas de Mulligan, nomeadamente MWM, mobilização articular, reforço muscular e treino proprioceptivo. O tratamento foi realizado diariamente durante 6 semanas. Resultados: Após a aplicação das técnicas de Mulligan MWM na 1ªsemana, o perónio encontra-se devidamente reposicionado, no entanto o calcâneo ainda se encontra posteriorizado. No fim da 2ªsemana, a amplitude articular aumentou significativamente, aproximando-se dos valores do membro contralateral, verificouse um ganho de força muscular progressivo. Na 3ª e 4ª semana progrediu-se o tratamento em termos de fortalecimento muscular e treino proprioceptivo. Na 5ª semana apresentava amplitudes de movimento de 17º de dorsiflexão, 43º de flexãoplantar, 15º de eversão e 18º de inversão. Relativamente à força, o músculo tibial anterior apresentava um grau 5 de força, longo e curto peronial e flexores plantares grau 4+. No fim de 6 semanas, terminada a sua recuperação encontrava-se sem qualquer limitação funcional, igual força muscular bilateral e proprioceptividade normal. Conclusão: Foi salientado o processo de raciocínio clínico desenvolvido pelo fisioterapeuta ao longo das 6 semanas de intervenção: a recolha e interpretação dos dados da história, levantamento das primeiras hipóteses, testes dessas hipóteses no exame objectivo, estabelecimento de um diagnóstico funcional e construção e implementação de um plano de intervenção com a colaboração do utente que permitiram uma recuperação funcional que foi de encontro aos objectivos traçados.

This paper presents a variable speed autonomous squirrel cage generator excited by a current-controlled voltage source inverter to be used in stand-alone micro-hydro power plants. The paper proposes a system control strategy aiming to properly excite the machine as well as to achieve the load voltage control. A feed-forward control sets the appropriate generator flux by taking into account the actual speed and the desired load voltage. A load voltage control loop is used to adjust the generated active power in order to sustain the load voltage at a reference value. The control system is based on a rotor flux oriented vector control technique which takes into account the machine saturation effect. The proposed control strategy and the adopted system models were validated both by numerical simulation and by experimental results obtained from a laboratory prototype. Results covering the prototype start-up, as well as its steady-state and dynamical behavior are presented. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Long-term contractual decisions are the basis of an efficient risk management. However those types of decisions have to be supported with a robust price forecast methodology. This paper reports a different approach for long-term price forecast which tries to give answers to that need. Making use of regression models, the proposed methodology has as main objective to find the maximum and a minimum Market Clearing Price (MCP) for a specific programming period, and with a desired confidence level α. Due to the problem complexity, the meta-heuristic Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) was used to find the best regression parameters and the results compared with the obtained by using a Genetic Algorithm (GA). To validate these models, results from realistic data are presented and discussed in detail.

Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) is the key enabling technology for the present and future vehicular communication for various applications, such as safety improvement and traffic jam mitigation. This paper describes the development of a microstrip antenna array for the roadside equipment of a DSRC system, whose characteristics are according with the vehicular communications standards. The proposed antenna, with circular polarization, has a wide bandwidth, enough to cover the current European DSRC 5.8 GHz band and the future 5.9 GHz band for next generation DSRC communications. In this paper we present results on the use of a multilayered a-SiC:H heterostructure as a wavelength-division demultiplexing device for the visible light spectrum. The proposed device is composed of two stacked p-i-n photodiodes with intrinsic absorber regions adjusted to short and long wavelength absorption and carrier collection. An optoelectronic characterisation of the device was performed in the visible spectrum. Demonstration of the device functionality for WDM applications was done with three different input channels covering the long, the medium and the short wavelengths in the visible range. The recovery of the input channels is explained using the photocurrent spectral dependence on the applied voltage. An electrical model of the WDM device is proposed and supported by the solution of the respective circuit equations. Short range optical communications constitute the major application field, however other applications are also foreseen.

The solubility of ethene in water and in the fermentation medium of Xanthobacter Py(2) was determined with a Ben-Naim-Baer type apparatus. The solubility measurements were carried out in the temperature range of (293.15 to 323.15) K and at atmospheric pressure with a precision of about +/- 0.3 %. The Ostwald coefficients, the mole fractions of the dissolved ethene, at the gas partial pressure of 101.325 kPa, and the Henry coefficients, at the water vapor pressure, were calculated using accurate thermodynamic relations. A comparison between the solubility of ethene in water and in the cultivation medium has shown that this gas is about 2.4 % more soluble in pure water. On the other hand, from the solubility temperature dependence, the Gibbs energy, enthalpy, and entropy changes for the process of transferring the solute from the gaseous phase to the liquid solutions were also determined. Moreover, the perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory equation of state (PC-SAFT EOS) model was used for the prediction of the solubility of ethene in water. New parameters, k(ij), are proposed for this system, and it was found that using a ky temperature-dependent PC-SAFT EOS describes more accurately the behavior solubilities of ethene in water at 101.325 kPa, improving the deviations to 1 %.

Este texto define e enquadra teoricamente as principais finalidades e orientações metodológicas do programa de formação dos mentores que acompanharam os professores em período probatório. O referencial de formação dos mentores construiu-se em torno das diferentes dimensões do ato de ensinar. A metodologia de formação organizou-se a partir do conceito de desenvolvimento profissional, considerando o mentor como objeto e sujeito da formação e procurando articular o processo formativo e o trabalho de supervisão desenvolvido pelos mentores, no terreno. As sessões de formação foram planeadas estrategicamente a partir de questões orientadoras às quais se procurou dar resposta através de um conjunto de atividades e materiais. Durante a implementação do período probatório foi produzido pelos intervenientes um conjunto considerável de documentos que foram trabalhados durante a formação. - Abstract This article defines and frames theoretically the main purposes and the methodological guidelines of the training program of mentors who have accompanied teachers on the probationary period. Those guidelines were constructed around the different dimensions of the act of teaching. The training methodology was organized from the concept of professional development, considering the mentor as object and subject of training and seeking to articulate the formative process and supervision work developed by mentors on the field. Training sessions have been strategically planned from guiding questions which sought to respond through a range of activities and materials.
