Low-temperature preparation and characterization of phase-pure lanthanide chromates (V) by the citrate gel process

Phase-pure, crystalline lanthanide chromates LnCrO4 (V), where Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Yb, Lu and Y, have been prepared by the controlled combustion of the corresponding lanthanide biscitrato chromium (III) complexes at comparatively low temperatures. Formation of chromates (V) was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, infrared and electronic spectroscopy. Phase purity of the materials has also been confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Non-linear optical response of rutile-related oxides, LiM(V)M(VI)O(6), and their derivatives obtained by ion-exchange and intercalation

Polycrystalline samples of oxides of the general formula LiM(V)M(VI)O(6) (M(V) = Nb, Ta; M(VI) = Mo, W), crystallizing in a non-centrosymmetric (space group P (4) over bar 2(1)m) trirutile structure, exhibit second harmonic generation (SHG) of 1064 nm radiation with efficiencies 15-45 times that of alpha-quartz; interestingly, the SHG response is retained by the protonated derivatives HM(V)M(VI)O(6) . xH(2)O, and their n-alkylamine intercalates as well.

Novel ABO(3) oxides related to perovskite and YAlO3 structure types in the La-B-V-O (B = Ni, Cu) systems

The synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of mixed-metal oxides of ABO(3) composition in the La-B-V-O (B = Ni, Cu) systems are described in the present paper. While the B = Ni oxides adopt GdFeO3-like perovskite structure containing disordered nickel and vanadium at the octahedral B site, La3Cu2VO9 crystallizes in a YAlO3-type structure. A detailed investigation of the superstructure of nominal La3Cu2VO9 by WDS analysis and Rietveld refinement of powder XRD data reveal that the likely composition of the phase is La13Cu9V4O38.5, where the Cu and V atoms are ordered in a root13a(h) (a(h) = hexagonal a parameter of YAlO3-like subcell) superstructure. Magnetic susceptibility data support the proposed superstructure consisting of triangular Cu-3 clusters. At low temperatures, the magnetic moment corresponds to S = 1/2 per Cu-3 cluster, while at high temperatures the behavior is Curie-Weiss like, showing S = 1/2 per copper. The present work reveals the contrasting behavior of La-Cu-V-O and La-Ni-V-O systems: while a unique line-phase related to YAlO3 structure is formed around La3Cu2VO9 Composition in the copper system, a continuous series of perovskite-GdFeO3 solid solutions, LaNi1-xVxO3 for 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1/3 seems to be obtained in the nickel system, where the oxidation state of nickel varies from 3+ to 2+.

Reactive biased target ion beam deposited W-DLC nanocomposite thin films - Microstructure and its mechanical properties

Tungsten incorporated diamond like carbon (W-DLC) nanocomposite thin films with variable fractions of tungsten were deposited by using reactive biased target ion beam deposition technique. The influence of tungsten incorporation on the microstructure, surface topography, mechanical and tribological properties of the DLC were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy. Atomic force microscope (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests. The amount of W in films gets increases with increasing target bias voltage and most of the incorporated W reacts with carbon to form WC nanoclusters. Using TEM and FFT pattern, it was found that spherical shaped WC nanoclusters were uniformly dispersed in the DLC matrix and attains hexagonal (W2C) crystalline structure at higher W concentration. On the other hand, the incorporation of tungsten led to increase the formation of C-sp(2) hybridized bonding in DLC network and which is reflected in the hardness and elastic modulus of W-DLC films. Moreover, W-DLC films show very low friction coefficient and increased adhesion to the substrate than the DLC film, which could be closely related to its unique nanostructure of the W incorporated thin films. Autocatalytic duplex Ni-P/Ni-W-P coatings on AZ31B magnesium alloy

Autocatalytic duplex Ni-P/Ni-W-P coatings were deposited on AZ31B magnesium alloy using stabilizer free nickel carbonate bath. Some of the coated specimens were passivated in chromate solution with and without heat treatment. Plain Ni-P coatings were also prepared for comparison. Coatings were characterized for their surface morphology, composition and corrosion resistance. Energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDX) showed that the phosphorous content in the Ni-P coating is 6 wt.% and for Ni-W-P it reduced to 3 wt.% due to the codeposition of tungsten in the Ni-P coating. Marginal increase in P and W contents was observed on passivated coupons along with Cr (0.18 wt.%) and O (2.8 wt.%) contents. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) examination of these coating surfaces exhibited the nodular morphology. Chromate passivated surfaces showed the presence of uniformly distributed bright Ni particles along with nodules. Potenfiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies were carried out in deaerated 0.15 M NaCI solution to find out the corrosion resistance of the coatings. Among the coatings developed, duplex-heat treated-passivated (duplex-HIP) coatings showed lower corrosion current density (i(corr)) and higher polarization resistance (R-p) indicating the improved corrosion resistance. The charge transfer resistance (R-ct) value obtained for the duplex-HIP was about 170 times higher compared to that for Ni P coating. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

On the Origin of Steep I-V Nonlinearity in Mixed-Ionic-Electronic-Conduction-Based Access Devices

Numerical modeling is used to explain the origin of the large ON/OFF ratios, ultralow leakage, and high ON-current densities exhibited by back-end-of-the-line-friendly access devices based on copper-containing mixed-ionic-electronic-conduction (MIEC) materials. Hall effect measurements confirm that the electronic current is hole dominated; a commercial semiconductor modeling tool is adapted to model MIEC. Motion of large populations of copper ions and vacancies leads to exponential increases in hole current, with a turn-ON voltage that depends on material bandgap. Device simulations match experimental observations as a function of temperature, electrode aspect ratio, thickness, and device diameter.

First principles study of structural stability and site preference in Co-3 (W,X)

Since the discovery 1] of gamma' precipitate (L1(2) - Co-3 (Al, W)) in the Co-Al-W ternary system, there has been an increased interest in Co-based superalloys. Since these alloys have two phase microstructures (gamma + gamma') similar to Ni-based superalloys 2], they are viable candidates in high temperature applications, particularly in land-based turbines. The role of alloying on stability of the gamma' phase has been an active area of research. In this study, electronic structure calculations were done to probe the effect of alloying in Co3W with L1(2) structure. Compositions of type Co-3(W, X), (where X/Y = Mn, Fe, Ni, Pt, Cr, Al, Si, V, W, Ta, Ti, Nb, Hf, Zr and Mo) were studied. Effect of alloying on equilibrium lattice parameters and ground state energies was used to calculate Vegard's coefficients and site preference related data. The effect of alloying on the stability of the L1(2) structure vis a vis other geometrically close packed ordered structures was also studied for a range of Co3X compounds. Results suggest that the penchant of element for the W sublattice can be predicted by comparing heats of formation of Co3X in different structures.

¿Libertad de elección de la madre o derecho a la vida del niño por nacer? : una disyuntiva que no es tal

Introducción: El aborto es un tema que genera diferentes opiniones en nuestro país y en todo el mundo. Es una problemática que no se reduce a lo jurídico, sino que implica connotaciones políticas, sociales, culturales, económicas y religiosas1. En el presente artículo nos proponemos aclarar la aparente disyuntiva que se presenta entre el derecho a la vida del niño por nacer y los derechos de la madre, como su libertad de elección, su privacidad y su salud, circunscribiendo el análisis al derecho argentino, aunque se hará especial referencia al precedente norteamericano, Roe v. Wade. En este sentido, en un primer momento haremos mención de la protección legislativa y jurisprudencial de cada uno de los derechos mencionados, para luego tratar de dar respuesta a la disyuntiva propuesta en el título del presente artículo: ¿existe el derecho a abortar? ¿Puede ser restringida la vida en el comienzo de su desarrollo? ¿Qué ocurre en caso de riesgo en la salud de la madre?

Abstract: Although he is the most prolific writer of the Greek Anthology, Palladas’ life is almost unknown. But, in spite of the limited biographical data, his work has fortunately been preserved in the GA. Because of his literary creation, the old times rewarded him with the nickname Μετέωρος, high, since the literary merits of a hundred poems of his authorship was recognized (others are discussed by critics). A dozen of them contains invaluable information about the political, religious and social situation in Alexandria immediately after the victory of the bishop Theophilus, Cyril’s predecessor and uncle, during the conflict between Christians and Gentiles, each sector backed up by an Alexandrian population segment (cfr. 9.528, 10.82, 10.85) . Resigned at times, constantly demanding, Palladas complains about the decline of the belief professed by him due to the increasing penetration of the new faith. Therefore, four epigrams record the conversion of the temple of Tyche into a tavern (9.180-183) and 10.90 seems to attack the doctrine of the Resurrection. When religion and politics go hand-in-hand, when religious conspiracies link up with palace intrigues, consequences are predictable: a man called Doroteo denounced him for his negative response to the new dogma, which caused him the loss of his teacher paid work. His annoyance was even greater with further sufferings, chiefly economic, and he had to sell his books (9.171 and 9.175) among other desperate decisions Forewarned about his radical bitterness against Church, it is just to make clear that he is not fully acquiescent with ancient gods and heroes. Thus, in 5.257 he questions Zeus’ ars amandi, in 9.377 refutes Tantalus’ possibility of thirst and hunger in Hades and 9.773 mischievously points out that Eros has been changed into a pan. The work begins with the selection, personal translation and comprehensive analysis of twenty two epigrams. Through such philological aid, we attempt to verify the frictions and the main perceptible factors in his poetic creation to justify his worldview, according to the pagan sentiment widespread in that time before the twilight already overwhelming of its ailing traditions
