Background: Cannabis use appears to exacerbate psychotic symptoms and increase risk of psychotic relapse. However, the relative contribution of cannabis use compared with other risk factors is unclear. The influence of psychotic symptoms on cannabis use has received little attention. Aims: To examine the influence of cannabis use on psychotic symptom relapse and the influence of psychotic symptom severity on relapse in cannabis use in the 6 months following hospital admission. Method: At baseline, 84 participants with recent-onset psychosis were assessed and 81 were followed up weekly for 6 months, using telephone and face-to-face interviews. Results: A higher frequency of cannabis use was predictive of psychotic relapse, after controlling for medication adherence, other substance use and duration of untreated psychosis. An increase in psychotic symptoms was predictive of relapse to cannabis use, and medication adherence reduced cannabis relapse risk. Conclusions: The relationship between cannabis use and psychosis may be bidirectional, highlighting the need for early intervention programmes to target cannabis use and psychotic symptom severity in this population. In disorders such as sleep apnea, sleep is fragmented with frequent EEG-arousal (EEGA) as determined via changes in the sleep-electroencephalogram. EEGA is a poorly understood, complicated phenomenon which is critically important in studying the mysteries of sleep. In this paper we study the information flow between the left and right hemispheres of the brain during the EEGA as manifested through inter-hemispheric asynchrony (IHA) of the surface EEG. EEG data (using electrodes A1/C4 and A2/C3 of international 10-20 system) was collected from 5 subjects undergoing routine polysomnography (PSG). Spectral correlation coefficient (R) was computed between EEG data from two hemispheres for delta-delta(0.5-4 Hz), theta-thetas(4.1-8 Hz), alpha-alpha(8.1-12 Hz) & beta-beta(12.1-25 Hz) frequency bands, during EEGA events. EEGA were graded in 3 levels as (i) micro arousals (3-6 s), (ii) short arousals (6.1-10 s), & (iii) long arousals (10.1-15 s). Our results revealed that in beta band, IHA increases above the baseline after the onset of EEGA and returns to the baseline after the conclusion of event. Results indicated that the duration of EEGA events has a direct influence on the onset of IHA. The latency (L) between the onset of arousals and IHA were found to be L=2plusmn0.5 s (for micro arousals), 4plusmn2.2 s (short arousals) and 6.5plusmn3.6 s (long arousals)

Field observations of net blotch epidemics indicated that Tallon barley was quite resistant to infection during later stages of growth despite being susceptible as a seedling. A glasshouse experiment was conducted to determine the effectiveness of this resistance and when it became operative. Three cultivars – Gilbert (very susceptible), Patty (resistant) and Tallon – were inoculated at various stages of growth with conidia of Pyrenophora teres f. teres and the infection response and leaf area diseased, recorded 13 days later. The response of Tallon clearly changed from susceptible to moderately susceptible at growth stage 33. Plants sown two weeks earlier were susceptible and plants sown two weeks later were moderately resistant. The response of the other two cultivars at similar growth stages paralleled their seedling responses. The resistance of Tallon appeared to increase with maturity so that, at its most resistant growth stage, the leaf area diseased was just 10% that of the susceptible, Gilbert. While this resistance appears pathotype specific, this experiment demonstrated very effective APR to net blotch. As most losses to this disease occur during the later stages of plant development, APR offers a valuable source of resistance.

Using magnetoencephalography, we studied the spatiotemporal properties of cortical responses in terms of event-related synchronization and event-related desynchronization to a range of stripe patterns in subjects with no neurological disorders. These stripes are known for their tendency to induce a range of abnormal sensations, such as illusions, nausea, dizziness, headache and attacks of pattern-sensitive epilepsy. The optimal stimulus must have specific physical properties, and maximum abnormalities occur at specific spatial frequency and contrast. Despite individual differences in the severity of discomfort experienced, psychophysical studies have shown that most observers experience some degree of visual anomaly on viewing such patterns. In a separate experiment, subjects reported the incidence of illusions and discomfort to each pattern. We found maximal cortical power in the gamma range (30-60 Hz) confined to the region of the primary visual cortex in response to patterns of 2-4 cycles per degree, peaking at 3 cycles per degree. This coincides with the peak of mean illusions and discomfort, also maximal for patterns of 2-4 cycles per degree. We show that gamma band activity in V1 is a narrow band function of spatial frequency. We hypothesize that the intrinsic properties of gamma oscillations may underlie visual discomfort and play a role in the onset of seizures.

In cases of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD), there is a spatial correlation between the classsic ‘cored’ type of Beta-amyloid (Abeta) deposit and the large vertically penetrating arterioles in the cerebral cortex suggesting that blood vessels are involved in the pathogenesis of the classic deposits. In this chapter, the spatial correlations between the diffuse, primitive, and classic Abeta deposits and blood vessels were studied in 10 cases of early-onset AD in the age range 40 – 65 years. Sections of frontal cortex were immunostained with antibodies against Abeta?and with collagen IV to reveal the Abeta deposits and blood vessel profiles. In the early-onset cases as a whole, all types of Abeta? deposit and blood vessel profiles were distributed in clusters. There was a positive spatial correlation between the clusters of the diffuse Abeta deposits and the larger (>10µm) and smaller diameter (<10?m) blood vessel profiles in one and three cases respectively. The primitive and classic Abeta deposits were spatially correlated with larger and smaller blood vessels both in three and four cases respectively. Spatial correlations between the Abeta deposits and blood vessels may be more prevalent in cases expressing amyloid precursor protein (APP) than presenilin 1 (PSEN1) mutations. Apolipoprotein E (Apo E) genotype of the patient did not appear to influence the spatial correlation with blood vessel profiles. The data suggest that the larger diameter blood vessels are less important in the pathogenesis of the classic Abeta deposits in early-onset compared with late-onset AD.
