A criança quando inicia a educação pré-escolar, já sabe muitas coisas sobre o mundo que a rodeia através do seu meio familiar e sociocultural. O conjunto de estimulações fornecidas, desde muito cedo, faz com que a criança desenvolva o potencial cognitivo e afetivo. O desenvolvimento e as aprendizagens adquiridas dependem das estimulações realizadas pelo meio envolvente e da qualidade das interações logo desde o nascimento. Este processo antes da entrada na escola é movido pelo desejo de saber da criança e a sua exploração do meio, passando com o início da escolaridade a ser movido por necessidades externas à criança. O aluno é confrontado com um currículo formal com objetivos prévios de aprendizagem que, por vezes, podem estar além dos seus desejos de descoberta ou da sua história de vida. A aprendizagem da leitura é uma construção que tem início antes da entrada no 1º ciclo através do desenvolvimento da linguagem oral e do contacto com a cultura escrita, que permite novas modalidades de comunicação, nova capacidade de simbolizar e de dominar o meio envolvente. O sucesso escolar vai depender quer das aprendizagens prévias quer da capacidade de adaptação e integração no meio escolar. Foi nosso propósito verificar se existem habilidades cognitivas antecedentes que predizem o sucesso da leitura. O interesse por este estudo prende-se com a necessidade que professores e restantes profissionais da educação têm em compreender e analisar com cuidado a situação de entrada na aprendizagem da leitura de cada uma das crianças. Escolhemos, baseado na literatura científica, duas habilidades que testamos previamente em alunos do 1.º ano: a consciência fonológica e o vocabulário. Entre Março e Junho foi aplicado um teste de leitura/descodificação. O estudo é de tipo correlacional que se situa entre o estudo descritivo e uma abordagem experimental. Constatamos que na análise dos resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa, não observamos correlação entre os níveis da consciência fonológica e a leitura e o vocabulário e a leitura, não permitindo afirmar que existe uma relação preditora de uma dessas habilidades com a competência leitora.

Para o comum das pessoas a HISTÓRIA LOCAL foi durante muito tempo uma recolecção de memórias e de factos centrada num microcosmos que tomava corpo naquilo a que se chamou a MONOGRAFIA.A verdade é que para muitos a HISTÓRIA LOCAL continua, ainda hoje, quase exclusivamente associada à produção das MONOGRAFIAS LOCAIS.A elaboração e a existência dessas obras, que em si mesmas não constituem nenhum mal (e eu, por exemplo, devo confessar que sou um grande consumidor delas - já por necessidade, já também por gosto) mas há que reconhecê-lo que atraíram há umas décadas atrás sobre a História Local o descrédito.Com efeito, tratava-se na generalidade dos casos, daquilo que o mundo académico veio a designar depreciativamente por micro-história no que diz respeito ao âmbito e ao alcance de tais obras.Mas, porventura, mais grave ainda do que isso, ocorre em grande parte dessas monografias que elas não revelam qualquer indício do domínio duma perspectiva epistemológica no que respeita à historiografia; nem remetem para o uso das normas mais elementares da metodologia com que se há de reconstituir e escrever a HISTÓRIA dos Homens.

The Fazzan Basin of south-west Libya is at present arid with less than 20 mm of rainfall per annum. However, regionally extensive limestones, lacustrine sands and coquina (fossiliferous carbonate rock) deposits show that the Fazzan Basin previously contained a large palaeolake, indicating that the climate in the past was more humid. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating techniques have been applied to key lacustrine deposits within the basin in an attempt to provide an internally consistent chronology for this humidity record. Results indicate that palaeolake sediments within the Fazzan Basin record a very long history of palacohydrological change, ranging from present day and conditions to humidity capable of sustaining a lake with an approximate area of 76,250 km(2). The existence of humid periods in mid oxygen isotope stage 5 and the early Holocene is confirmed. An older lacustrine event, tentatively correlated to oxygen isotope stage 11, is also recognized. In addition, evidence is presented for at least two humid phases beyond the age range over which the conventional OSL dating technique is applicable. This study demonstrates that OSL dating of palaeolake sediments within the Fazzan Basin offers the potential to provide a detailed record of North African humidity spanning several glacial-interglacial cycles. Fifty-nine healthy infants were filmed with their mothers and with a researcher at two, four, six and nine months in face-to-face play, and in toy-play at six and nine months. During toy-play at both ages, two indices of joint attention (JA)—infant bids for attention, and percent of time in shared attention—were assessed, along with other behavioural measures. Global ratings were made at all four ages of infants’ and mothers’ interactive style. The mothers varied in psychiatric history (e.g., half had experienced postpartum depression) and socioeconomic status, so their interactive styles were diverse. Variation in nine-month infant JA — with mother and with researcher — was predicted by variation in maternal behaviour and global ratings at six months, but not at two or four months. Concurrent adult behaviour also influenced nine-month JA, independent of infant ratings. Six-month maternal behaviours that positively predicted later JA (some of which remained important at nine months) included teaching, conjoint action on a toy, and global sensitivity. Other behaviours (e.g., entertaining) negatively predicted later JA. Findings are discussed in terms of social-learning and neurobiological accounts of JA emergence.

This article examines the hitherto neglected history of the twelve women who studied law at Cambridge and Oxford in the years up to 1900. It concludes that the reason why so little has been written about them is, first, because women's experience has been routinely ignored in accounts of legal education ( and in history generally) and, second, because their entry to the university law schools was accomplished with very little fuss or opposition. This in turn was due not only to the fact that the law professors were generally sympathetic to higher education for women but also because the women themselves did not challenge university traditions or the men's curriculum.

Competition is one of the most important biotic factors determining the structure of ecological communities. In this study, we show that there is variation in competitive ability between two clones of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, both of which out-compete a clone of the vetch aphid, Megoura viciae, in the laboratory. We tested whether this variation in competitive ability would alter the outcome of interspecific competition in the field. White one pea aphid clone followed the pattern set in the laboratory, out-competing the Megoura viciae clone, another showed the reverse effect with Megoura viciae dominating. These differences appear to be the result of variation in early population growth rate between the pea aphid clones, rather than predation, although predation did lead to the eventual extinction of colonies. We also questioned whether intra- and interspecific differences in predator escape behaviour could affect the outcome of competition in the field. All three clones responded similarly to the presence of foraging hoverfly larvae (Episyrphus balteatus), but the Megoura viciae clone dropped from the plant significantly less often in response to the presence of a foraging two-spot ladybird (Adalia bipunctata). This work provides evidence that intraspecific variation in competitive ability can alter the outcome of interspecific competitive interactions in nature and suggests that species-specific behavioural. traits may have the potential to modify the outcome of these interactions. The lithic record from the Solent River and its tributaries is re-examined in the light of recent interpretations about the changing demography of Britain during the Lower and early Middle Palaeolithic. Existing models of the terrace stratigraphies in the Solent and its tributary areas are reviewed and the corresponding archaeological record (specifically handaxes) for each terrace is assessed to provide models for the relative changes in human occupation through time. The Bournemouth area is studied in detail to examine the effects of quarrying and urbanisation on collection history and on the biases it introduces to the record. In addition, the effects of reworking of artefacts from higher into lower terraces are assessed, and shown to be a significant problem. Although there is very little absolute dating available for the Solent area, a cautious interpretation of the results from these analyses would suggest a pre-Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 12 date for the first appearance of humans, a peak in population between MIS 12 and 10, and a decline in population during MIS 9 and 8. Owing to poor contextual data and small sample sizes, it is not clear when Levallois technology was introduced. This record is compared and contrasted to that from the Thames Valley. It is suggested that changes in the palaeogeography of Britain, in particular land connections to the continent, might have contributed to differences in the archaeological records from the Solent and Thames regions.

Background:  Several authors have highlighted areas of overlap in symptoms and impairment among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and children with specific language impairment (SLI). By contrast, loss of language and broadly defined regression have been reported as relatively specific to autism. We compare the incidence of language loss and language progression of children with autism and SLI. Methods:  We used two complementary studies: the Special Needs and Autism Project (SNAP) and the Manchester Language Study (MLS) involving children with SLI. This yielded a combined sample of 368 children (305 males and 63 females) assessed in late childhood for autism, history of language loss, epilepsy, language abilities and nonverbal IQ. Results:  language loss occurred in just 1% of children with SLI but in 15% of children classified as having autism or autism spectrum disorder. Loss was more common among children with autism rather than milder ASD and is much less frequently reported when language development is delayed. For children who lost language skills before their first phrases, the phrased speech milestone was postponed but long-term language skills were not significantly lower than children with autism but without loss. For the few who experienced language loss after acquiring phrased speech, subsequent cognitive performance is more uncertain. Conclusions:  Language loss is highly specific to ASD. The underlying developmental abnormality may be more prevalent than raw data might suggest, its possible presence being hidden for children whose language development is delayed.

The archaeology of Britain during the early Middle Pleistocene (MIS 19–12) is represented by a number of key sites across eastern and southern England. These sites include Pakefield, Happisburgh 1, High Lodge, Warren Hill, Waverley Wood, Boxgrove, Kent's Cavern, and Westbury-sub-Mendip, alongside a ‘background scatter’ lithic record associated with the principal river systems (Bytham, pre-diversion Thames, and Solent) and raised beaches (Westbourne–Arundel). Hominin behaviour can be characterised in terms of: preferences for temperate or cool temperate climates and open/woodland mosaic habitats (indicated by mammalian fauna, mollusca, insects, and sediments); a biface-dominated material culture characterised by technological diversity, although with accompanying evidence for distinctive core and flake (Pakefield) and flake tool (High Lodge) assemblages; probable direct hunting-based subsistence strategies (with a focus upon large mammal fauna); and generally locally-focused spatial and landscape behaviours (principally indicated by raw material sources data), although with some evidence of dynamic, mobile and structured technological systems. The British data continues to support a ‘modified short chronology’ to the north of the Alps and the Pyrenees, with highly sporadic evidence for a hominin presence prior to 500–600 ka, although the ages of key assemblages are subject to ongoing debates regarding the chronology of the Bytham river terraces and the early Middle Pleistocene glaciations of East Anglia.
