Extended immersive learning environment: a hybrid remote/virtual laboratory

This paper presents a collaborative virtual learning environment, which includes technologies such as 3D virtual representations, learning and content management systems, remote experiments, and collaborative learning spaces, among others. It intends to facilitate the construction, management and sharing of knowledge among teachers and students, in a global perspective. The environment proposes the use of 3D social representations for accessing learning materials in a dynamic and interactive form, which is regarded to be closer to the physical reality experienced by teachers and students in a learning context. A first implementation of the proposed extended immersive learning environment, in the area of solid mechanics, is also described, including the access to theoretical contents and a remote experiment to determine the elastic modulus of a given object.These instructions give you basic guidelines for preparing camera-ready papers for conference proceedings. Therapeutic itineraries and explanations for tuberculosis: an indigenous perspective

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To analyze explanations for tuberculosis and therapeutic itineraries of Brazilian indigenous people. METHODS Case study with a qualitative-descriptive approach. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 11 Munduruku indigenous, including direct observation of treatment for tuberculosis in the municipality of Jacareacanga, south-western region of the state of Para, Brazil. To identify explanations for tuberculosis and therapeutic itineraries, we performed thematic content analysis. RESULTS Traditional medicine was the first therapeutic option chosen by the indigenous. However, biomedicine was also employed, which indicates a circulation between different therapeutic contexts and health concepts among the Munduruku. The explanations provided ranged from recognition of the signs and symptoms specific to tuberculosis to the attribution of the disease to a spirit that leaves the body and wanders in the woods, returning ill into the body. Unlike the biomedical model, which links tuberculosis transmission strictly to interpersonal contact, in closed spaces without natural lighting and ventilation (preferably domestic environments), the Munduruku associate the disease to an indirect contact between people socially distant (enemies or adversaries) in public and open places. CONCLUSIONS The explanations made by the indigenous are unique and deserve the attention of those who are responsible for developing health public policies, as well as of the teams who work on the villages. To guarantee an efficient control of tuberculosis in these regions, it is necessary that the developed actions integrate biomedicine knowledge and the traditional medicine of the indigenous people, in addition to respecting and welcoming local culture manifestations.

Positive radial solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the Minkowski-Curvature equation in a ball

We study the existence and multiplicity of positive radial solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the Minkowski-curvature equation { -div(del upsilon/root 1-vertical bar del upsilon vertical bar(2)) in B-R, upsilon=0 on partial derivative B-R,B- where B-R is a ball in R-N (N >= 2). According to the behaviour off = f (r, s) near s = 0, we prove the existence of either one, two or three positive solutions. All results are obtained by reduction to an equivalent non-singular one-dimensional problem, to which variational methods can be applied in a standard way.

The norm of the K- Th derivative of the X-symmetric power of an operator

In this paper, the exact value for the norm of directional derivatives, of all orders, for symmetric tensor powers of operators on finite dimensional vector spaces is presented. Using this result, an upper bound for the norm of all directional derivatives of immanants is obtained.

Educational application of remote experimentation for mobile devices

In this article the authors describe the application development RExMobile and the importance of remote experimentation via mobile devices, especially smartphones simple, beyond the space provided for this application in education. The article deals the creation, software and hardware that provide an interactive and dynamic way to attract more students to use these experiments remote, serving as support to teachers to science teaching from its initial series. The ease and availability of smartphones, even these students of basic education, permits the reach of new users and in different places. Thus, the practice of remote experimentation in mobile devices enables new spaces for access and interaction. Are used for developing software free or low cost, HTML5 and jQuery Mobile framework, that enable the creation of pages compatible with different mobile operating systems such as iOS, Android, Windows Phone, some Symbian, among others. Also are demonstrated patterns layouts that allow greater accessibility.

Implementação de um Array de detetores de radiação ionizante

Atualmente, as radiações ionizantes desempenham um papel fundamental nas áreas de diagnóstico e terapia, estando omnipresentes em ambientes hospitalares. Contudo, devido aos efeitos biológicos adversos da radiação, torna-se essencial a protecção dos profissionais de saúde e pacientes. Consequentemente, um array de detetores capazes de produzir um sinal acústico, aquando da presença de radiação ionizante excedendo determinados valores limite e transmissão via wireless das leituras para um sistema central _e de grande interesse prático. Nesta dissertação, foi implementado um sistema capaz de alimentar um array de sensores de radiação para monitorização de diferentes espaços e transmissão das leituras efetuadas via wireless. A aquisição de dados foi realizada, recorrendo à utilização de um conversor analógico-digital. Vários testes de validação foram realizados, através de vários passos para alcançar a concretização do sistema final, nomeadamente testes relativos ao circuito de detecção, módulos de comunicação wireless, bem como o uso de diferentes ambientes de desenvolvimento integrados (IDE). Os resultados destes testes mostram a visualização e gravação adequadas dos dados relativos aos níveis de radiação, bem como a transmissão de dados de forma viável, permitindo a monitorização de espaços sujeitos à presença de radiação ionizante. Desta forma, um array de contadores Geiger-Müller, ligados a módulos wireless XBee open-source e uma placa Arduino, possibilitou a implementação de um sistema viável e de baixo custo para monitorização de radiação ionizante e registar esses mesmos dados para posterior análise.
