Results of a search for decays of massive particles to fully hadronic final states are presented. This search uses 20.3 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector in s√=8TeV proton--proton collisions at the LHC. Signatures based on high jet multiplicities without requirements on the missing transverse momentum are used to search for R-parity-violating supersymmetric gluino pair production with subsequent decays to quarks. The analysis is performed using a requirement on the number of jets, in combination with separate requirements on the number of b-tagged jets, as well as a topological observable formed from the scalar sum of the mass values of large-radius jets in the event. Results are interpreted in the context of all possible branching ratios of direct gluino decays to various quark flavors. No significant deviation is observed from the expected Standard Model backgrounds estimated using jet-counting as well as data-driven templates of the total-jet-mass spectra. Gluino pair decays to ten or more quarks via intermediate neutralinos are excluded for a gluino with mass mg~<1TeV for a neutralino mass mχ~01=500GeV. Direct gluino decays to six quarks are excluded for mg~<917GeV for light-flavor final states, and results for various flavor hypotheses are presented.

One important component with particular relevance in battery performance is the cathode, being one of the main responsible elements for cell capacity and cycle life. Carbon coated lithium iron phosphate, C-LiFePO4, active material is one of the most promising cathode materials for the next generation of large scale lithium ion battery applications and strong research efforts are being devoted to it, due to its excellent characteristics, including high capacity, ~170 mAh/g, and safety. This review summarizes the main developments on C-LiFePO4 based cathode film preparation and performance. The effect of the binder, conductive additive, relationship between active material-binder-conductive additive and drying step, in the electrode film fabrication and performance is presented and discussed. Finally, after the presentation of the cell types fabricated with C-LiFePO4 active material and their performance, some conclusions and guidelines for further investigations are outlined.

Open Display Networks have the potential to allow many content creators to publish their media to an open-ended set of screen displays. However, this raises the issue of how to match that content to the right displays. In this study, we aim to understand how the perceived utility of particular media sharing scenarios is affected by three independent variables, more specifically: (a) the locativeness of the content being shared; (b) how personal that content is and (c) the scope in which it is being shared. To assess these effects, we composed a set of 24 media sharing scenarios embedded with different treatments of our three independent variables. We then asked 100 participants to express their perception of the relevance of those scenarios. The results suggest a clear preference for scenarios where content is both local and directly related to the person that is publishing it. This is in stark contrast to the types of content that are commonly found in public displays, and confirms the opportunity that open displays networks may represent a new media for self-expression. This novel understanding may inform the design of new publication paradigms that will enable people to share media across the display networks.

As crianças evidenciam uma atitude de curiosidade e de questionamento, procurando encontrar respostas para as suas dúvidas. Nesta atitude reside já a sua predisposição para a pesquisa. Torna-se, por isso, importante que os professores estimulem e integrem a pesquisa no processo educativo. Este artigo relata o percurso investigativo no contexto da intervenção pedagógica concretizado numa turma do 4.º ano de escolaridade do 1.º ciclo do ensino básico. As crianças foram confrontadas com a complexidade do processo de pesquisa trabalhando com diferentes meios, nomeadamente internet, livros e entrevista. Metodologicamente tratou-se de um estudo de caso de caráter descrito-interpretativo.

Many funding agencies have Open Access mandates in place, but how often are scientific publications as outputs linked to funding details? The benefits of linking funding information to publications as part of the deposit workflow can assist in adhering to Open Access mandates. This paper examines how OpenAIRE – Open Access Infrastructure for Research in Europe – can ease monitoring Open Access and reporting processes for funders, and presents some results and opportunities. It also outlines how it relies on cleaned and curated repository content, a vital cog in the ever turning wheel of the global scholarly landscape, and the benefits it brings.

FOSTER aims to support different stakeholders, especially young researchers, in adopting open access in the context of the European Research Area (ERA) and in complying with the open access policies and rules of participation set out for Horizon 2020 (H2020). FOSTER establish a European-wide training programme on open access and open data, consolidating training activities at downstream level and reaching diverse disciplinary communities and countries in the ERA. The training programme includes different approaches and delivery options: elearning, blearning, self-learning, dissemination of training materials/contents, helpdesk, face-to-face training, especially training-the-trainers, summer schools, seminars, etc.

Many extensions of the Standard Model posit the existence of heavy particles with long lifetimes. This article presents the results of a search for events containing at least one long-lived particle that decays at a significant distance from its production point into two leptons or into five or more charged particles. This analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at s√ = 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1 collected in 2012 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. No events are observed in any of the signal regions, and limits are set on model parameters within supersymmetric scenarios involving R-parity violation, split supersymmetry, and gauge mediation. In some of the search channels, the trigger and search strategy are based only on the decay products of individual long-lived particles, irrespective of the rest of the event. In these cases, the provided limits can easily be reinterpreted in different scenarios.

(Excerto) Olhando para o percurso do RadioActive, há uma ideia que parece ser transversal a todo o projeto. Referimo-nos a um princípio que chamaríamos de “identificação” e que foi determinante – é determinante – nos processos de investigação participativa. Falamos da identificação dos investigadores com os princípios da investigação-ação, da identificação das intervenções com as particularidades de cada contexto. Da imprescindível e progressiva identificação dos participantes com o projeto. Na verdade, sem esta multifacetada identificação é impossível pensar em resultados sustentáveis e persistentes. Investigadores e demais participantes têm de sentir que o projeto é “seu”, que os objetivos são “seus”, embora o façam necessariamente a velocidades diferentes. A aprendizagem, neste âmbito, expande-se sempre de dentro para fora, emerge dos interesses do sujeito e não de uma estrutura pré-concebida e imposta pelos que chegam (Ravenscroft et al., 2011), neste caso, os investigadores. Uma das diferenças das pesquisas participativas em relação às tradicionais é, precisamente, a atuação coletiva e não solitária do investigador. Os pesquisadores fazem parte de um processo participatório em que estão envolvidos numa estrutura (Cammarota & Fine, 2008: 5). Paulo Freire é o autor primordial em todos os projetos e países onde a RA101 foi aplicada. As suas concepções em torno da investigação-ação participativa tentam apontar sempre para uma ação e também para uma reflexão sobre os processos.
