The greatest relaxation time for an assembly of three- dimensional rigid rotators in an axially symmetric bistable potential is obtained exactly in terms of continued fractions as a sum of the zero frequency decay functions (averages of the Legendre polynomials) of the system. This is accomplished by studying the entire time evolution of the Green function (transition probability) by expanding the time dependent distribution as a Fourier series and proceeding to the zero frequency limit of the Laplace transform of that distribution. The procedure is entirely analogous to the calculation of the characteristic time of the probability evolution (the integral of the configuration space probability density function with respect to the position co-ordinate) for a particle undergoing translational diffusion in a potential; a concept originally used by Malakhov and Pankratov (Physica A 229 (1996) 109). This procedure allowed them to obtain exact solutions of the Kramers one-dimensional translational escape rate problem for piecewise parabolic potentials. The solution was accomplished by posing the problem in terms of the appropriate Sturm-Liouville equation which could be solved in terms of the parabolic cylinder functions. The method (as applied to rotational problems and posed in terms of recurrence relations for the decay functions, i.e., the Brinkman approach c.f. Blomberg, Physica A 86 (1977) 49, as opposed to the Sturm-Liouville one) demonstrates clearly that the greatest relaxation time unlike the integral relaxation time which is governed by a single decay function (albeit coupled to all the others in non-linear fashion via the underlying recurrence relation) is governed by a sum of decay functions. The method is easily generalized to multidimensional state spaces by matrix continued fraction methods allowing one to treat non-axially symmetric potentials, where the distribution function is governed by two state variables. Slurries with high penetrability for production of Self-consolidating Slurry Infiltrated Fiber Concrete (SIFCON) were investigated in this study. Factorial experimental design was adopted in this investigation to assess the combined effects of five independent variables on mini-slump test, plate cohesion meter, induced bleeding test, J-fiber penetration test and compressive strength at 7 and 28 days. The independent variables investigated were the proportions of limestone powder (LSP) and sand, the dosages of superplasticiser (SP) and viscosity agent (VA), and water-to-binder ratio (w/b). A two-level fractional factorial statistical method was used to model the influence of key parameters on properties affecting the behaviour of fresh cement slurry and compressive strength. The models are valid for mixes with 10 to 50% LSP as replacement of cement, 0.02 to 0.06% VA by mass of cement, 0.6 to 1.2% SP and 50 to 150% sand (% mass of binder) and 0.42 to 0.48 w/b. The influences of LSP, SP, VA, sand and W/B were characterised and analysed using polynomial regression which identifies the primary factors and their interactions on the measured properties. Mathematical polynomials were developed for mini-slump, plate cohesion meter, J-fiber penetration test, induced bleeding and compressive strength as functions of LSP, SP, VA, sand and w/b. The estimated results of mini-slump, induced bleeding test and compressive strength from the derived models are compared with results obtained from previously proposed models that were developed for cement paste. The proposed response models of the self-consolidating SIFCON offer useful information regarding the mix optimization to secure a highly penetration of slurry with low compressive strength

In this paper the parameters of cement grout affecting rheological behaviour and compressive strength are investigated. Factorial experimental design was adopted in this investigation to assess the combined effects of the following factors on fluidity, rheological properties, induced bleeding and compressive strength: water/binder ratio (W/B), dosage of superplasticiser (SP), dosage of viscosity agent (VA), and proportion of limestone powder as replacement of cement (LSP). Mini-slump test, Marsh cone, Lombardi plate cohesion meter, induced bleeding test, coaxial rotating cylinder viscometer were used to evaluate the rheology of the cement grout and the compressive strengths at 7 and 28 days were measured. A two-level fractional factorial statistical model was used to model the influence of key parameters on properties affecting the fluidity, the rheology and compressive strength. The models are valid for mixes with 0.35-0.42 W/B, 0.3-1.2% SP, 0.02-0.7% VA (percentage of binder) and 12-45% LSP as replacement of cement. The influences of W/B, SP, VA and LSP were characterised and analysed using polynomial regression which can identify the primary factors and their interactions on the measured properties. Mathematical polynomials were developed for mini-slump, plate cohesion meter, inducing bleeding, yield value, plastic viscosity and compressive strength as function of W/B, SP, VA and proportion of LSP. The statistical approach used highlighted the limestone powder effect and the dosage of SP and VA on the various rheological characteristics of cement grout

Several methods based on an easy geometric argument are provided to prove that a given operator is not weakly supercyclic. The methods apply to different kinds of operators like composition operators or bilateral weighted shifts. In particular, it is shown that the classical Volterra operator is not weakly supercyclic on any of the LP [0, 1] spaces, 1

It is remarkable how the classical Volterra integral operator, which was one of the first operators which attracted mathematicians' attention, is still worth of being studied. In this essentially survey work, by collecting some of the very recent results related to the Volterra operator, we show that there are new (and not so new) concepts that are becoming known only at the present days. Discovering whether the Volterra operator satisfies or not a given operator property leads to new methods and ideas that are useful in the setting of Concrete Operator Theory as well as the one of General Operator Theory. In particular, a wide variety of techniques like summability kernels, theory of entire functions, Gaussian cylindrical measures, approximation theory, Laguerre and Legendre polynomials are needed to analyze different properties of the Volterra operator. We also include a characterization of the commutator of the Volterra operator acting on L-P[0, 1], 1

We construct $x^0$ in ${\Bbb R}^{\Bbb N}$ and a row-finite matrix $T=\{T_{i,j}(t)\}_{i,j\in\N}$ of polynomials of one real variable $t$ such that the Cauchy problem $\dot x(t)=T_tx(t)$, $x(0)=x^0$ in the Fr\'echet space $\R^\N$ has no solutions. We also construct a row-finite matrix $A=\{A_{i,j}(t)\}_{i,j\in\N}$ of $C^\infty(\R)$ functions such that the Cauchy problem $\dot x(t)=A_tx(t)$, $x(0)=x^0$ in ${\Bbb R}^{\Bbb N}$ has no solutions for any $x^0\in{\Bbb R}^{\Bbb N}\setminus\{0\}$. We provide some sufficient condition of solvability and of unique solvability for linear ordinary differential equations $\dot x(t)=T_tx(t)$ with matrix elements $T_{i,j}(t)$ analytically dependent on $t$.

Let H be a two-dimensional complex Hilbert space and P(3H) the space of 3-homogeneous polynomials on H. We give a characterization of the extreme points of its unit ball, P(3H), from which we deduce that the unit sphere of P(3H) is the disjoint union of the sets of its extreme and smooth points. We also show that an extreme point of P(3H) remains extreme as considered as an element of L(3H). Finally we make a few remarks about the geometry of the unit ball of the predual of P(3H) and give a characterization of its smooth points.

Objective: Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A(2) (Lp-PLA(2)) is an inflammatory biomarker that circulates mainly bound to LDL. We evaluated the association of Lp-PLA(2) with vascular events in the elderly where the importance of LDL is diminished as a risk factor for coronary disease.

For a better understanding of the adsorption behavior of alkylcarbonate-based electrolytes on graphite electrodes and Celgard separator for Li-ion batteries applications, the interface parameters are determined by contact angle and surface tension measurements. The correlation between these parameters and chemical compositions made of alkyl carbonate with a varying nature of lithium salts (LiPF6 and LiTFSI) and volume fractions of binary and ternary mixtures containing propylene carbonate (PC), ethylene carbonate (EC), and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is investigated. From the obtained contact angle and surface tension (?L) values for each liquid, the dispersive and polar components of the surface tension (?Ld and ?Lp) of the electrolyte and interfacial free energy between the solid and liquid (?SL) were then calculated using the Young’s equation. The variation of contact angle (?) and the surface tension, as well as the work of adhesion (WA) of binary PC/DMC mixtures on PP, PE, and PET model surfaces were also measured and commented as function of volume fraction of PC in DMC. Finally, the Zisman’s critical surface tension (?C) for studied surfaces was then obtained showing positives slopes of cos ? versus ?L. This behavior is explained by a relative higher adsorption of alkylcarbonates to the hydrogenated supports or graphite. These results are decisive to understand the performance of electrolyte/electrode material/separator interfaces in lithium-ion battery devices.

Building on a proof by D. Handelman of a generalisation of an example due to L. Fuchs, we show that the space of real-valued polynomials on a non-empty set X of reals has the Riesz Interpolation Property if and only if X is bounded.

BACKGROUND: Although serum ECP concentrations have been reported in normal children, there are currently no published upper cutoff reference limits for serum ECP in normal, nonatopic, nonasthmatic children aged 1-15 years.
METHODS: We recruited 123 nonatopic, nonasthmatic normal children attending the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children for elective surgery and measured serum ECP concentrations. The effects of age and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) on the upper reference limits were studied by multiple regression and fractional polynomials.
RESULTS: The median serum ECP concentration was 6.5 microg/l and the 95th and 97.5 th percentiles were 18.8 and 19.9 microg/l. The median and 95th percentile did not vary with age. Exposure to ETS was not associated with altered serum ECP concentrations (P = 0.14).
CONCLUSIONS: The 95th and 97.5 th percentiles for serum ECP for normal, nonatopic, nonasthmatic children (aged 1-15 years) were 19 and 20 microg/l, respectively. Age and exposure to parental ETS did not significantly alter serum ECP concentrations or the normal upper reference limits. Our data provide cutoff upper reference limits for normal children for use of serum ECP in a clinical or research setting.

Several populations of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) exist in the bladder, associated with intramural nerves. Although ICC respond to exogenous agonists, there is currently no evidence of their functional innervation. The objective was to determine whether bladder ICC are functionally innervated. Guinea-pig bladder tissues, loaded with fluo-4AM were imaged with fluorescent microscopy and challenged with neurogenic electrical field stimulation (EFS). All subtypes of ICC and smooth muscle cells (SMC) displayed spontaneous Ca2+-oscillations. EFS (0.5Hz, 2Hz, 10Hz) evoked tetrodotoxin (1µM)-sensitive Ca2+-transients in lamina propria ICC (ICC-LP), detrusor ICC and perivascular ICC (PICC) associated with mucosal microvessels. EFS responses in ICC-LP were significantly reduced by atropine or suramin. SMC and vascular SMC (VSM) also responded to EFS. Spontaneous Ca2+-oscillations in individual ICC-LP within networks occurred asynchronously whereas EFS evoked coordinated Ca2+-transients in all ICC-LP within a field of view. Non-correlated Ca2+-oscillations in detrusor ICC and adjacent SMC pre-EFS, contrasted with simultaneous neurogenic Ca2+ transients evoked by EFS. Spontaneous Ca2+-oscillations in PICC were little affected by EFS, whereas large Ca2+-transients were evoked in pre-EFS quiescent PICC. EFS also increased the frequency of VSM Ca2+-oscillations. In conclusion, ICC-LP, detrusor ICC and PICC are functionally innervated. Interestingly, Ca2+-activity within ICC-LP networks and between detrusor ICC and their adjacent SMC were synchronous under neural control. VSM and PICC Ca2+-activity was regulated by bladder nerves. These novel findings demonstrate functional neural control of bladder ICC. Similar studies should now be carried out on neurogenic bladder to elucidate the contribution of impaired nerve-ICC communication to bladder pathophysiology.
