The laser ablation method was used for depositing porous nanocrystalline indium-tin oxide thin films for gas sensing applications. Samples were prepared at different pressures using three gases (O-2, 0.8N(2):0.2O(2), N-2) and heat-treated in the same atmosphere used for the ablation process. X-ray diffraction results show that the films are not oriented and the grain sizes are in the range between 15 and 40 nm. The grains are round shaped for all samples and the porosity of the films increases with the deposition pressure. The degree of sintering after heat treatment increases for lower oxygen concentrations, generating fractures on the surface of the samples. Film thicknesses are in the range of I pm for all gases as determined from scanning electron microscopy cross-sections. Electrical resistance varies between 36.3 ohm for the film made at 10 Pa pressure in N-2 until 9.35 x 10(7) ohm for the film made at 100 Pa in O-2. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High non-linear J x E electrical characteristic (alpha=41) were obtained in the Nb2O5 and Cr2O3 doped CoO highly densified SnO2 ceramics. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that these ceramics are apparently single phase. Electrical properties and microstructure are highly dependent on the Cr2O3 concentration and on the sintering temperature. Excess of Cr2O3 leads to porous ceramics destroying the material's electrical characteristics probably due to precipitation of second phase of CoCr2O4 Dopant segregation and/or solid solution formation at the grain boundaries can be responsible for the formation of the electrical barriers which originate the varistor behaviour. SnO2 based ceramics doped with 1.0 mol% ZnO, 1.0 mol% CoO, 0.1 mol% WO3 and 0.05 mol% Cr2O3 show varistor behavior with nonlinear coefficient alpha = 33, breakdown electric field E-B = 12.5 kV/cm, leakage current I = 0.63 mA/cm(2) and average grain size of 1.52 mu m. Experimental evidence shows that the addition of Cr2O3 improves the nonlinear properties of the samples significantly, the impedance data, represented by means of Nyquist diagrams, show a dramatic increase in the resistivity for the samples doped with Cr2O3. The 9.5/65/35 PLZT was prepared from the polymeric precursors (the Pechini and partial oxalate process) and by sintering in two stages in an oxygen atmosphere. After thermal treatment at 400 degreesC, the powders were calcinated and sintered at 1200 degreesC with slow heating and cooling rates. The second stage of sintering consisted of hot pressing at the same temperature in oxygen atmosphere. After calcination of PLZT powders obtained by both methods, as well as after sintering of PLZT obtained by Pechini process, the paraelectric cubic phase was formed. After sintering of PLZT obtained by partial oxalate procedure, small tetragonality of crystal structure was observed. After hot pressing PLZT was pseudocubic. SEM microstructural analyses were carried out of the sintering and hot pressed samples and indicated the small grain size less than 2 mum. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The work reported here consisted of a study of the sensitivity of the nonlinear electrical properties of dense SnO2. CoO ceramic systems to low concentrations of La2O3, sintering temperature and cooling rates. The nonlinear electrical properties of these systems were found to increase with decreasing cooling rates, a behavior attributed to the CoO solid state reactions at temperatures below 1000 degreesC. Post-annealing treatment in N-2-rich atmospheres strongly decreases the non-ohmic behavior of SnO2. CoO ceramic systems. However, this behavior may be restored through thermal treatment in an O-2-rich atmosphere. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of LiNbO3 and KNbO3 seeds on the microstructure and dielectric characteristics of PMN ceramic prepared by columbite route have been investigated with the addition of 0, 1, and 2-wt% of seeds. X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and an impedance analyzer were used to characterize the influence of seeds on physical characteristics and dielectric properties of PMN. LiNbO3 -seeded PMN samples present a significant increase in the amount of perovskite phase. The addition of LiNbO3 seeds in sintered PMN ceramics at 1100degreesC during 4 h causes a decrease in the porosity and the amount of pyrochlore phase. Weight losses during sintering of PMN ceramics are suppressed more significantly for LiNbO3 -seeded PMN. T-m of PMN ceramics changes with seeds concentration. KNbO3 seeds displace T-m to lower temperature whereas LiNbO3 causes its elevation. Dielectric constants of approximately 13,000 at 1 kHz was measured at -5degreesC in PMN ceramics with 1-wt% of LiNbO3 seeds.

Fractal dimensions of grain boundary region in doped SnO2 ceramics were determined based on previously derived fractal model. This model considers fractal dimension as a measure of homogeneity of distribution of charge carriers. Application of the derived fractal model enables calculation of fractal dimension using results of impedance spectroscopy. The model was verified by experimentally determined temperature dependence of the fractal dimension of SnO2 ceramics. Obtained results confirm that the non-Debye response of the grain boundary region is connected with distribution of defects and consequently with a homogeneity of a distribution of the charge carriers. Also, it was found that C-T-1 function has maximum at temperature at which the change in dominant type of defects takes place. This effect could be considered as a third-order transition.

The electric and dielectric properties of the grain boundary of Na0.85Li0.15NbO3 lead-free ferroelectric-semiconductor perovskite were investigated. The impedance spectroscopy was carried out as a function of a thermal cycle. The sodium lithium niobate was synthesized by a chemical route based on the evaporation method. Dense ceramic, relative density of 97%, was prepared at 1423 K for 2 h in air atmosphere. ac measurements were carried out in the frequency range of 5 Hz-13 MHz and from 673 to 1023 K. Theoretical adjust of the impedance data was performed to deriving the electric parameters of the grain boundary. The electric conductivity follows the Arrhenius law, with activation energy values equal to 1.55 and 1.54 eV for heating and cooling cycle, respectively. The nonferroelectric state of the grain boundary and its correlation with symmetry are discussed in the temperature domain. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

SnO2:m mol% CoO (0.5 less than or equal to m less than or equal to 6.0) ceramic specimens were studied by impedance spectroscopy in the 5 Hz-13 MHz frequency range during heating cold-pressed specimens from room temperature to 1250 degrees C. The electrical resistivity during sintering decreases from 4 to 6 orders of magnitude in the 400-1500 K temperature range depending on the amount of CoO. An increase in electrical resistivity in the 570-670 K range is related to the release of adsorbed water. The results for the 970-1500 K show that the higher the amount of the CoO addition, the lower is the temperature at which SnO2:CoO reaches a minimum electrical resistivity. This suggests that oxygen point defects created by dissolution of cobalt ions in the SnO2 lattice are controlling the densification rate of these ceramics.

This work presents the preparation of SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) directly by the combustion synthesis. Strontium nitrate, niobium ammonium oxalate (NH4H2[NbO-(C2O4)(3)].3H(2)O) and bismuth oxide were used as oxidant reactants and urea as fuel. The influence of the fuel was evaluated by the addition of different fuel amounts (50%, 100%, 200% and 300%), 100% being the stoichiometric proportion. The XRD patterns showed that the SBN perovskite crystallized as the majority phase. The as-synthesized stoichiometric powder presented a specific surface area of around 13 m(2)/g and a mean grain size of around 16 nm. Dilatometric measurements showed that the maximum sintering rate occurs at 1275degreesC. The determination of the ferroparaelectric transition showed a Curie temperature (T-c) of 429degreesC. Yields and starch pasting characteristics obtained from wet milling of maize samples with low and high levels of defect grains were compared to those from sound samples. Defect grain groups ere established taking into account the defect degree. Thus the first group consisted of fermented, molded, heated and sprouted grains and the second of insect damaged. hollow, fermented (up to 1/4) grains and those injured by other causes. The grain groups, if present at low levels in the samples, 10% for first group and 17% for second group did not affect the chemical composition of starch and its pasting properties. obtained by the rapid visco analyser. Samples with high levels of grain groups (up to 100%). affected wet milling yields and starch viscosity. Samples with 100% of grains in the first group decreased starch, germ yield and peak viscosity and increased gluten yield. Samples with 100% of grains in the second group decreased germ and fiber yield but increased starch yield. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper reports on a study of the: effect of replacing CoO by MnO2 on the sintering and electrical propel-ties of the 98.95% SnO2 + (1 - x)% CoO + x% MnO2 + 0.05% Ta2O5 system. All the samples were compacted into pellets and sintered at 1300 degrees C for 1 h, when they reached densities of about 98% of the theoretical density. An X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed no other detectable phases other than SnO2. Current-voltage characterization indicated varistor behavior in the systems. The non-linear coefficient (alpha) and breakdown electric field (Eb) increased as the amount of MnO2 was increased. The results are explained in terms of an electric barrier modification, due to the presence of adsorbed negative oxygen species at the grain boundary inter face. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V.
