Efficient energy upconversion of cw radiation at 1.064 mum into blue, red, and near infrared emission in Tm3+-doped Yb3+-sensitized 60TeO(2)-10GeO(2)-10K(2)O-10Li(2)O-10Nb(2)O(5) glasses is reported. Intense blue upconversion luminescence at 485 nm corresponding to the Tm3+ (1)G(4)--> H-3(6) transition with a measured absolute power of 0.1 muW for 800 mW excitation power at room temperature is observed. The experimental results also revealed a sevenfold enhancement in the upconversion efficiency when the sample was heated from room temperature to 235 degreesC yielding 0.7 muW of blue absolute fluorescence power for 800 mW pump power. High brightness emission around 800 nm (F-3(4)--> H-3(6)) in addition to a less intense 655 nm ((1)G(4)--> H-3(4) and F-3(2,3)--> H-3(6)) fluorescence is also recorded. The energy upconversion excitation mechanism for thulium emitting levels is assigned to multiphonon-assisted anti-Stokes excitation of the ytterbium-sensitizer followed by multiphonon-assisted sequential energy-transfer processes. The K+ reversible processes for ion exchange in KhFek[Fe(CN)(6)](l)center dot mH(2)O host compounds (Prussian Blue) were thermodynamically analyzed. A thermodynamic approach was established and developed based on the consideration of a lattice-gas model where the electronic contribution to the chemical potential is neglected and the ion-host interaction is not considered. The occupation fraction of the intercalation process was calculated from the kinetic parameters obtained through ac-electrogravimetry in a previous paper. In this way, the mass potential transfer function introduces a new way to evaluate the thermodynamic aspect of intercalation. Finally, based on the thermodynamic approach, the energy used to put each K+ ion into the host material was calculated. The values were shown to be in good agreement with the values obtained through transient techniques, for example, cyclic voltammetry. As a result, this agreement between theory and experimental data validates the thermodynamic approach considered here, and for the first time, the thermodynamic aspects of insertion were considered for mixed valence materials.

We report the infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion in Er3+-Yb3+-codoped PbO-GeO2 glass containing silver nanoparticles (NPs). The optical excitation is made with a laser at 980 nm in resonance with the F-2(5/2)-> F-2(7/2) transition of Yb3+ ions. Intense emission bands centered at 525, 550, and 662 nm were observed corresponding to Er3+ transitions. The simultaneous influence of the Yb3+-> Er3+ energy transfer and the contribution of the intensified local field effect due to the silver NPs give origin to the enhancement of the whole frequency upconversion spectra.

The evolution of the energy states of the phosphorous donor in silicon with magnetic field has been the subject of previous experimental and theoretical studies to fields of 10 T. We now present experimental optical absorption data to 18 T in combination with theoretical data to the same field. We observe features that are not revealed in the earlier work, including additional interactions and anti-crossings between the different final states. For example, according to the theory, for the "1s -> 2p (+)" transition, there are anti-crossings at about 5, 10, 14, 16, and 18 T. In the experiments, we resolve at least the 5, 10, and 14 T anti-crossings, and our data at 16 and 18 T are consistent with the calculations.

A biophysical understanding of the MSW-to-energy facility located at the Sao Joao landfill in São Paulo is performed using emergy synthesis. The implementation of a plan for environmental compensation in fulfillment of State's requirements was also assessed. Emergy based indices are calculated to assess the environmental pressure and sustainability status of the biogas project. The study was conducted by combining the study of emergy indicators and the net emergy yield ratio to determine long-term sustainability and measure global environmental stress. The Emergy investment to the use of biogas is relatively low and profitable. The implementation of the project for environmental compensation does not change the Emergy investment significantly, but the energy recovery is high. The conclusions justify the effort invested in developing MSW-to-energy plants and are applicable for policy makers in a highly sensitive sector to achieve sustainability goals - recovery of energy.

In this analysis, using available hourly and daily radiometric data performed at Botucatu, Brazil, several empirical models relating ultraviolet (UV), photosynthetically active (PAR) and near infrared (NIR) solar global components with solar global radiation (G) are established. These models are developed and discussed through clearness index K(T) (ratio of the global-to-extraterrestrial solar radiation). Results obtained reveal that the proposed empirical models predict hourly and daily values accurately. Finally. the overall analysis carried Out demonstrates that the sky conditions are more important in developing correlation models between the UV component and the global solar radiation. The linear regression models derived to estimate PAR and NIR components may be obtained without sky condition considerations within a maximum variation of 8%. In the case of UV, not taking into consideration the sky condition may cause a discrepancy of up to 18% for hourly values and 15% for daily values. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

High-energy ball milling was employed to produce small particles of Gd5Si2Ge2. Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the ball-milled and bulk Gd5Si2Ge2 samples were investigated through the magnetization measurements. When compared to the bulk material, a significant decrease in saturation magnetization and magnetocaloric effect (-Delta S-max = 4 vs. 20 J/kgK for Delta H = 0-5 T) is observed even after the relatively short ball milling time of 4 h which produced particles with an average size of ca. 0.5 mu m. The ball-milled samples appear to loose a first-order structural transition, present in bulk Gd5Si2Ge2, and display a superparamagnetic behaviour below the corresponding Curie temperatures. It's believed that the simple Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian can not predict the insulator to metal transition of transpolyacetylene (t-PA). The soliton lattice configuration at a doping level y=6% still has a semiconductor gap. Disordered distributions of solitons close the gap, but the electronic states around the Fermi energy are localized. However, within the same framework, it is possible to show that a cluster of solitons can produce dramatic changes in the electronic structure, allowing an insulator-to-metal transition.

We discuss how the vacuum model of Celenza and Shakin with a squeezed gluon condensate can explain the existence of an infrared singular gluon propagator frequently used in calculations within the global color model. In particular, it reproduces a recently proposed QCD-motivated model where low energy chiral parameters were computed as a function of a dynamically generated gluon mass. We show how the strength of the confining interaction of this gluon propagator and the value of the physical gluon condensate may be connected.

In the context of a gauge theory for the translation group, a conserved energy-momentum gauge current for the gravitational field is obtained. It is a true spacetime and gauge tensor, and transforms covariantly under global Lorentz transformations. By rewriting the gauge gravitational field equation in a purely spacetime form, it becomes the teleparallel equivalent of Einstein's equation, and the gauge current reduces to the Møller's canonical energy-momentum density of the gravitational field.

We consider a scalar field theory on AdS in both minimally and non-minimally coupled cases. We show that there exist constraints which arise in the quantization of the scalar field theory on AdS which cannot be reproduced through the usual AdS/CFT prescription. We argue that the usual energy, defined through the stress-energy tensor, is not the natural one to be considered in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We analyze a new definition of the energy which makes use of the Noether current corresponding to time displacements in global coordinates. We compute the new energy for Dirichlet, Neumann and mixed boundary conditions on the scalar field and for both the minimally and non-minimally coupled cases. Then, we perform the quantization of the scalar field theory on AdS showing that, for 'regular' and 'irregular' modes, the new energy is conserved, positive and finite. We show that the quantization gives rise, in a natural way, to a generalized AdS/CFT prescription which maps to the boundary all the information contained in the bulk. In particular, we show that the divergent local terms of the on-shell action contain information about the Legendre transformed generating functional, and that the new constraints for which the irregular modes propagate in the bulk are the same constraints for which such divergent local terms cancel out. In this situation, the addition of counterterms is not required. We also show that there exist particular cases for which the unitarity bound is reached, and the conformai dimension becomes independent of the effective mass. This phenomenon has no bulk counterpart.

A combined theoretical and experimental study to elucidate the molecular mechanism for the Grob fragmentation of different (N-halo)-2-amino cyclocarboxylates with the nitrogen atom in exocyclic position: (N-Cl)-2-amino cyclopropanecarboxylate (1), (N-Cl)-2-amino cyclobutanecarboxylate (2), (N-Cl)-2-amino cyclopentanecarboxylate (3) and (N-Cl)-2-amino cyclohexanecarboxylate (4), and the corresponding acyclic compounds, (N-Cl)-2-amino isobutyric acid (A), (N-Cl)-2-amino butyric acid (B), has been carried out. The kinetics of decomposition for these compounds and related bromine derivatives were experimentally determined by conventional and stopped-flow UV spectrophotometry. The reaction products have been analyzed by GC and spectrophotometry. Theoretical analysis is based in the localization of stationary points (reactants and transition structures) on the potential energy surface. Calculations were carried out at B3LYP/6-31+G* and MP2/6-31+G* computing methods in the gas phase, while solvent effects have been included by means the self-consistent reaction field theory, PCM continuum model, at MP2/6-31+G* and MP4/6-31+G*//MP2/6-31+G* calculation levels. Based on both experimental and theoretical results, the different Grob fragmentation processes show a global synchronicity index close to 0.9, corresponding to a nearly concerted process. At the TSs, the N-Cl bond breaking is more advanced than the C-C cleavage process. An antiperiplanar configuration of these bonds is reached at the TSs, and this geometrical arrangement is the key factor governing the decomposition. In the case of 1 and 2 the ring strain prevents this spatial disposition, leading to a larger value of the activation barrier. Natural population analysis shows that the polarization of the N-Cl and C-C bonds along the bond-breaking process can be considered the driving force for the decomposition and that a negative charge flows from the carboxylate group to the chlorine atom to assist the reaction pathway. A comparison of theoretical and experimental results shows the relevance of calculation level and the inclusion of solvent effects for determining accurate unimolecular rate coefficients for the decomposition process. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

In this report we investigate the optical properties and energy-transfer upconversion luminescence of Ho3+- and Tb3+/Yb 3+-codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass-ceramic under infrared excitation. In Ho3+/Yb 3+-codoped sample, green(545 nm), red(652 nm), and near-infrared(754 nm) upconversion luminescence corresponding to the 4S 2(5F4) → 5I8, 5F5 → 5I8, and 4S2(5F4) → 5I 7, respectively, was readly observed. Blue(490 nm) signals assigned to the 5F2,3 → 5I8 transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+ system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the 5D3(5G6) → 7FJ(J=6,5,4) and 5D4→ 7FJ(J=6,5,4,3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, and doping contents was also examined. The results indicate that successive energy-transfer between ytterbium and holmium ions and cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. The viability of using the samples for three-dimensional solid-state color displays is also discussed.
