Pattern recognition methods were applied to the analysis of 600 MHz H-1 NMR spectra of urine from rats dosed with compounds that induced organ-specific damage in the liver and kidney. Male Wistar rats were separated into groups (n=4) and each was treated with one of following compounds: HgCl2, CCl4, Lu(NO3)(3) and Changle (a kind of rare earth complex mixed with La, Ce, Pr and Nd). Urine samples from the rats dosed with HgCl2, CCl4 and Lu(NO3)(3) were collected over a 24 h time course and the samples from the rats administrated with Changle were gained after 3 months. These samples were measured by 600 MHz NMR spectroscopy. Each spectrum was data-processed to provide 223 intensity-related descriptors of spectra. Urine spectral data corresponding to the time intervals, 0-8 h (HgCl2 and CCl4), 4-8 (Lu(NO3)(3)) h and 90 d (Changle) were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA). Successful classification of the toxicity and biochemical effects of Lu(NO3)(3) was achieved.

The synthesis of a novel ABC ternary segregated H-shaped copolymer is described, of which a central poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chain is terminated on both sides by polystyrene (PS) and poly(tert-butylacrylate) (PtBA) chains. The synthetic procedure involves functionalization of PEG by 2-bromosuccinic anhydride followed by esterification of 1,6-hexanediol, which gives its ends the bifunctional nature that allows sequential growth of two PS, then two PtBA arms via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The resulting segregated H-shaped copolymers were characterization by NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). All these copolymers were affirmed to have well-defined structures and narrow molecular weight distributions.

The subacute toxicity of aristolochic acid (AA) was investigated by H-1 NMR spectroscopic and pattern recognition (PR)-based metabonomic methods. Model toxins were used to enable comparisons of the urinary profiles from rats treated with known toxicants and AA at various time intervals. Urinary H-1 NMR spectra were data-processed and analyzed by pattern recognition method. The result of visual comparison of the spectra showed that AA caused a renal proximal tubular and papillary lesion and a slight hepatic impair. Pattern recognition analysis indicated that the renal proximal tubule lesion was the main damage induced by AA, and the renal toxicity induced by AA was a progressive course with the accumulation of dosage by monitoring the toxicological processes from onset, development and part-recovery. These results were also supported by the conventional clinical biochemical parameters.

Intermolecular hydrogen bonds, miscibility, crystallization and thermal stability of the blends of biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) [P(3HB-3HHx)] with 4,4-dihydroxydiphenylpropane (DOH2) were investigated by FTIR, C-13 Solid state NMR, DSC, WAXD and TGA. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds were found in both blend systems, which resulted from the carbonyl groups in the amorphous phase of both polyesters and the hydroxyl groups of DOH2. The intermolecular interaction between P(3HB-3HHx) and DOH2 is weaker than that between PHB and DOH2 owing to the steric hindrance of longer 3HHx side chains. Because of the effect of the hydrogen bonds, the chain mobility of both PHB and P(3HB-3HHx) components was limited after blending with DOH2 molecules. Single glass transition temperature depending on the composition was observed in all blends, indicating that those blends were miscible in the melt. The addition of DOH2 suppressed the crystallization of PHB and P(3HB-3HHx) components. Moreover, the crystallinity of PHB and P(3HB-3HHx) components also decreased with increasing DOH2 content in the blends.

Metabolic profiles caused by rare earth complex were investigated using NMR and ICP-MS techniques. Male and female Wistar rats were treated orally with Changle (A kind of rare earth complex applied in agriculture to raise the production of crops) at dose of 2, 5 and 20 mg (.) kg(-1) body weight/day respectively for 90 d. Urine and serum samples are collected on 90 d. The relative concentrations of important endogenous metabolites in urine and serum are determined from H-1 NMR spectra and the contents of the four rare earth elements ( La, Ce, Pr and Nd) constituting Changle in the serum samples are measured by ICP-MS technique. Changle-induced renal and liver damage in rats is found based on the increase in the amounts of the amino acids, trimethylamine N-oxide, N, N-dimethyglycine, dimethylamine, succinate, aketoglutarate and ethanol as well as rare earth concentrations. The similarities and differentiations are found in the alteration patterns of metabolites and rare earth concentrations in serum.

High resolution magic angle spinning (MAS)-H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic-based metabonomic approach was applied to the investigation on the acute biochemical effects of Ce(No-3)(3). Male Wistar rats were administrated with various doses of Ce (NO3)(3)(2, 10, and 50 mg(.)kg(-1) body weight), and MAS H-1 NMR spectra of intact liver and kidney tissues were analyzed using principal component analysis to extract toxicity information. The biochemical effects of Ce (NO3)(3) were characterized by the increase of triglycerides and lactate and the decrease of glycogen in rat liver tissue, together with an elevation of the triglyceride level and a depletion of glycerophosphocholine and betaine in kidney tissues. The target lesions of Ce (NO3)(3) on liver and kidney were found by MAS NMR-based metabonomic method. This study demonstrates that the combination of MAS H-1 NMR and pattern recognition analysis can be an effective method for studies of biochemical effects of rare earths.

High resolution H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance ( NMR) spectroscopy has been employed to assess long-term toxicological effects of ChangLe (a kind of rare earth complex applied in agriculture). Male Wistar rats were administrated orally with ChangLe at doses of 0, 0.1, 0.2, 2.0, 10 and 20 mg/kg body weight daily, respectively, for 6 months. Urine was collected at-day 30, 60, go and serum samples were taken after 6 months. Many low-molecular weight metabolites were identified by H-1 NMR spectra of rat urine. A decrease in citrate and an increase in ketone bodies, creatinine, DMA, DMG, TMAO, and taurine in the urine of the rats. receiving high doses were found by H-1 NMR spectra. These may mean that high-dosage of ChangLe impairs the specific region of liver and kidney, such as renal tubule and mitochondria. The decrease in citrate and the increase in succinate and alpha-ketoglutarate were attributed to a combination of the inhibition of certain citric acid enzymes, renal tubular acidosis and the abnormal fatty acid catabolism. The information of the renal capillary necrosis could be derived from the increase in DMIA, DMG and TMAO. The increase in taurine was due to hepatic mitochondria dysfunction. The conclusions were supported by the results of biochemical measure. merits and enzymatic assay.

A new compound, (C6H6N3)(7)((PMo12O40)-O-m)(PMo(v)Mo(11)(m)O40) (.) 2CH(3)CH(2)OH (.) 5H(2)O, was synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, H-1 NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. This is the first example of benzotriazole-polyoxometalates species. The compound crystallized in a triclinic space group P (1) over bar with a = 1. 8378 (4) nm. b = 1. 9078 (4) nm. c = 2.1037 (4) nm. alpha = 63.41 (3)degrees. beta = 64.31 (3)degrees. gamma = 68.38 (3)degrees. V = 5.803 (2) nm(3). Z = 2. R-1 = 0.0486, wR(2) = 0.1357. The X-ray crystallographic study showed that the crystal structure was constructed by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds between dodecamolybdophosphorate anions and protonated benzotriazole cations. The electrochemical behavior and the reduction of nitrite and hydrogen peroxide clectrocatalyzed by the title compound were studied.

A new compound, (CH5N2)(3)(PMo12O40CH4N23H2O)-C-.-H-. (1), was synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra, UV spectra, NMR spectra and ESR spectra. This is, to our knowledge, the first example of an imidazole-polyoxometalate species. The compound was recrystallized from N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and then black block-like crystals of (C3H5N2)(4)((PMoMo11O40)-Mo-V-O-VI)(.)4C(3)H(7)NO(.) 2H(2)O (2), were obtained. It crystallizes in a triclinic space group P (1) over bar with n=12.423(3) Angstrom, b=12.666(3) Angstrom, c=13.341(3) Angstrom, alpha=70.56(3)degrees, beta=71.16(3)degrees, gamma=64.18(3)degrees, V= 1742.3(6) Angstrom(3), Z=1, R1 = 0.0585, wR2 = 0.1885. An X-ray crystallographic study showed that the crystal structure is constructed by electrostatic attractions and hydrogen bonds between a dodecamolybdophosphoric anion and an imidazole. The imidazole and DMF molecules occupy cavities in a polyoxometalate lattice ordered along a c-axis. The structure of (2) is similar to that of (1) from a comparison of both IR spectra and TGA Curves.

Triblock copolymer PCL-PEG-PCL was prepared by ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (CL) in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) catalyzed by calcium ammoniate at 60 degreesC in xylene solution. The copolymer composition and triblock structure were confirmed by H-1 NMR and C-13 WR measurements. The differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffraction analyses revealed the micro-domain structure in the copolymer. The melting temperature T-c and crystallization temperature T-c of the PEG domain were influenced by the relative length of the PCL blocks. This was caused by the strong covalent interconnection between the two domains. Aqueous micelles were prepared from the triblock copolymer. The critical micelle concentration was determined to be 0.4-1.2 mg/l by fluorescence technique using pyrene as probe, depending on the length of PCL blocks, and lower than that of corresponding PCL-PEG diblock copolymers. The H-1 NMR spectrum of the micelles in D2O demonstrated only the -CH2CH2O- signal and thus confirmed. the PCL-core/PEG-shell structure of the micelles.

H-1 NMR spectroscopy has been used to assess long-term toxicological effects of a rare earth. Male Wistar rats were administrated orally with La(NO3)(3) at doses of 0.1, 0.2, 2.0, 10, and 20 mg/kg body wt, resp., for 3-6 months. Urine was collected at 1, 2, and 3 months and serum samples were taken after 6 months. Numerous low-M-r metabolites in rats serum and rats urine, including creatinine, citrate, glucose, ketone bodies, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), and various amino acids, were identified on 400- and 500-MHz H-1 NMR spectra. La3+-induced renal and liver damage is characterized by an increase in the amounts of the excreted ketone bodies, amino acids, lactate, ethanol, succinate, TMAO, dimethylamine, and taurine and a decrease in citrate, glucose, urea, and allantoin. Information on the molecular basis of the long-term toxicity of La(NO3)(3) was derived from the abnormal patterns of metabolite excretions. An assay of some biochemical indexes and analysis of some enzymes in plasma supported NMR results.

The effect of the amount of the catalyst FeCl3, used during the direct oxidation polymerization, on the structure and properties of the obtained poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) was investigated in this paper. Such measurements as gel permeation chromatography (GPC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible (W-vis) spectroscopy were applied. It is found that a suitable addition of FeCl3 can contribute to generate a P3DDT with greater percentage of head-to-tail head-to-tail (HT-HT) linkages, which are generally favored. The reduction of the other linkage defects helps to lengthen conjugation length, thus leading to more orderly chain packing. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Six beta-diketone compounds, 1,3-bis(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanedione (1), 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-3-(3-nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanedione(2), 1,3-bis(3-nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanedione(3) 1,3-bis(4-amimophenyl)-1,3-propanedione(4), 1-(4-amimophenyl)-3-( 3-amimophenyl)-1,3-propanedione(5) and 1,3-bis (3-amimophenyl)-1,3-propanedione(6) were synthesized, Their structures were characterized by IR, UV-Vis, fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy, The percentage of keto tautomer, enol-keto equilibrium constant and enol tautomer ratio of them were also determined, The percentage of keto tautomer is increased in the order from compound 1 to 3 and decreased in the order from compound 4 to 6, which show the effect of substituent on the tautomer. The results of enol tautomer ratio of compounds 2 and 5 indicated that b-form of enol is slightly more favorable than its a-form.

A series of light-emitting poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s with triphenylamine units as hole-transporting moieties in the main chain were synthesized via Wittig condensation in good yields. The newly formed vinylene double bonds possessed a trans configuration, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The high glass-transition temperature (83-155 degreesC) and high decomposition temperature (> 300 degreesC) suggested that the resulting copolymers possessed high thermal stability. These copolymers, especially TAAPV1, possessed a high weight-average molecular weight (47,144) and a low polydispersity index (1.55). All the copolymers could be dissolved in common organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), CHCl3, CH2Cl2, and toluene, and exhibited intense photoluminesence in THF (the emission maxima were located from 478 to 535 nm) and in film (from 478 to 578 nm). The low onsets of the oxidation potential (0.6-0.75 V) suggested that the alternating copolymers possessed a good hole-transporting property due to the incorporation of triphenylamine moieties. The reactions of half-sandwich diselenolate Mo and W complexes (CpM)-M-#(NO)(SePh)(2) (M = Mo; Cp-# = Cp' (1a), MeCp (1b); M = W; Cp-# = Cp' (1c)) with (Norb)Mo(CO)(4), Ni(COD)(2) and Fe(CO)(5) have been investigated. Treatment of (1a), (1b) and (1c) with (Norb)Mo(CO)(4) in PhMe gave the bimetallic complexes: Cp'Mo(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)Mo(CO)(4) (2a), MeCpMo(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)Mo(CO)(4) (2b) and Cp'W(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)Mo(CO)(4) (2c) in moderate yields. Irradiation of (1a) and (1c) in the presence of Fe(CO)(5) gave heterobimetallic complexes Cp'Mo(CO)(mu -SePh)(2)Fe(CO)(3) (3a) and Cp'W(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)Fe(CO)(3) (3c). Ni(COD)(2) reacts with two equivalents of (1a), (1b) and (1c) to give [Cp'Mo(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)](2)Ni (4a), [MeCpMo(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)](2)Ni (4b) and [Cp'W(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)](2)Ni (4c) in good yields. The new heterobimetallic complexes were characterized by i.r., H-1-n.m.r., C-13-n.m.r. and EI-MS spectroscopy.
