Nondemented Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients showed increased amplitude of event-related potential component P3. We recorded 18-channel spontaneous eyes-closed resting EEG and auditory oddball event-related potentials in 29 PD patients and 11 age-matched controls. Combining Mini-Mental State Examination score and oddball P3 counting performance, 15 patients were intellectually normal, 7 moderately, and 7 severely demented. P3 and N1 amplitude and latency, mean amplitude of 1,024 ms post-stimulus (separate after rare and after frequent stimuli), and resting EEG total power for 40 s were computed, and linearly regressed for age, sex, and L-dopa dosage. In nondemented PD patients, increased P3 amplitude was confirmed, but N1 amplitude and mean amplitude after rare and frequent stimuli were also increased as well as – most important – resting EEG total power. With increasing dementia, amplitude and power decreased, and P3 latency increased. Task demands cannot explain increased P3 amplitude, since similarly increased EEG total power was found during no-task resting. Prospective studies must determine whether P3 amplitude and EEG power in nondemented PD patients can serve as predictors of dementia.

Delivering cochlear implants through a minimally invasive tunnel (1.8 mm in diameter) from the mastoid surface to the inner ear is referred to as direct cochlear access (DCA). Based on cone beam as well as micro-computed tomography imaging, this in vitro study evaluates the feasibility and efficacy of manual cochlear electrode array insertions via DCA. Free-fitting electrode arrays were inserted in 8 temporal bone specimens with previously drilled DCA tunnels. The insertion depth angle, procedural time, tunnel alignment as well as the inserted scala and intracochlear trauma were assessed. Seven of the 8 insertions were full insertions, with insertion depth angles higher than 520°. Three cases of atraumatic scala tympani insertion, 3 cases of probable basilar membrane rupture and 1 case of dislocation into the scala vestibuli were observed (1 specimen was damaged during extraction). Manual electrode array insertion following a DCA procedure seems to be feasible and safe and is a further step toward clinical application of image-guided otological microsurgery.

In this study, we compared direction detection thresholds of passive self-motion in the dark between artistic gymnasts and controls. Twenty-four professional female artistic gymnasts (ranging from 7 to 20 years) and age-matched controls were seated on a motion platform and asked to discriminate the direction of angular (yaw, pitch, roll) and linear (leftward–rightward) motion. Gymnasts showed lower thresholds for the linear leftward–rightward motion. Interestingly, there was no difference for the angular motions. These results show that the outstanding self-motion abilities in artistic gymnasts are not related to an overall higher sensitivity in self-motion perception. With respect to vestibular processing, our results suggest that gymnastic expertise is exclusively linked to superior interpretation of otolith signals when no change in canal signals is present. In addition, thresholds were overall lower for the older (14–20 years) than for the younger (7–13 years) participants, indicating the maturation of vestibular sensitivity from childhood to adolescence.
