The p-toluene sulfonic acid (MA) in phenol matrix was separated and determined by capillary electrophoresis with ultraviolet detector. the effect of the concentration and pH of the buffer on separation was investigated. Cinnamic acid has been chosen as the internal standard from four compounds, the calibration curves of PTSA in 50 mg/L phenol matrix were obtained with and without the internal standard. The linear range was from 1.25 to 12.5 mg/L and the correlation coefficient was 0.9999 for both curves. The limit of detection of PISA was 0.75 mg/L at 3 times of SIN. Finally, the concentration of PTSA in four synthesized samples was determined with method of standard additions, and the effect of matrix was discussed. The values of MA in these samples were 1.01, 0.94, 1.56 and 0.00 mg/L respectively.

(AsW9O34)(2)] . 16H(2)O was synthesized from the reaction of K-10[Cu-4(H2O)(2)(AsW9O34)(2)] . 20H(2)O with beta -alanine, Its structure has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar, with a=1. 196 3(2) nm, b=1. 536 5(3) nm, c=1. 591 4(3) nm, alpha =93. 97(3)degrees, beta= 110. 88(3)degrees, gamma =101. 07(3)degrees, V=2. 651 8(9) nm(3) and Z=1. Least-squares refinement of the structure leads to R and R-w factors of 0. 067 3 and 0. 162 8, respectively. An unusual structural feature of the compound is that the polyanion [Cu-4(H2O)(2) (AsW9O34)](10-) is linked with the amino-acid complex of Cu2+ by a mu -oxygen atom.

An acid-stable soybean-peroxidase biosensor was devel oped by immobilizing the enzyme in a sol-gel thin film. Methylene blue was used as a mediator because of its high electron-transfer efficiency. The sol-gel thin film and enzyme membrane were characterized by FT-IR, and the effects of pH, operating potential, and temperature were explored for optimum analytical performance by using the amperometric method. The H2O2 sensor exhibited a fast response (5 s), high sensitivity (27.5 mu A/mM), as well as good thermostability and long-term stability. In addition, the performance of the biosensor was investigated using flow-injection analysis (FIA).

The electrode reaction process of ascorbic (Vc) was studied by in-situ circular dichroic(CD) spectroelectrochemistry with a long optical path thin layer cell on glassy carbon(GC) electrode. The spectroelectrochemical data were analyzed by the double logarithmic method together with nonlinear regression. The results suggested that the mechanism of Ve in pH 7.0 phosphate buffer solution at GC electrode was a two-electron irreversible electrooxidation followed by adsorption of the oxidation product. That is a self-accelerated process. Some kinetic parameters at free and at adsorbed electrode surface, i.e, the formal potentials, E-0' = 0.09 V, E-a(0') = 0.26 +/- 0.02 V; the electron transfer coefficient and number of transfered electron, alpha n = 0.41, alpha(a)n = 0.07;the standard heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant, k(0) = 8.0 x 10(-5) cm.s(-1), k(a)(0) = 1.9 x 10(-4) cm.s(-1) and adsorption constant, beta = 102.6 were also estimated.

A novel dianhydride, 3,3'-dioxo-[1,1']-spirodiphthalan-5,5',6,6'-tetracarboxlic dianhydride, was synthesized and used as a monomer to prepare polyimides with several diamines via a conventional two-stage procedure. The intermediate poly(amic-acid)s had inherent viscosities of 0.84-1.71 dL/g and could be thermally converted into lightly yellow, transparent, flexible and tough films. Films cast from chemically imidized polyimides were transparent and colorless. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) were > 400 degrees C, and the 5% weight-loss temperatures were > 420 degrees C in N-2 and in air. The solubilities of these polyimides in various solvents were evaluated. The mechanical properties of some polyimides were also tested. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

(A) novel chemiluminescence (CL) system was evaluated for the determination of hydrogen peroxide, glucose and ascorbic acid based on hydrogen peroxide, which has a catalytic-cooxidative effect on the oxidation of luminol by KIO4. Hydrogen peroxide can be directly determined by luminol-KIO4 -H2O2 CL system. The detection limit was 3.0 x 10(-8) mol l(-1) and the calibration graph was linear over the range of 2.0 x 10(-7)-6.0 x 10(-4) mol l(-1). The relative standard deviation of H2O2 was 1.1% for 2.0 x 10(-6) mol l(-1) (N = 11). Glucose was indirectly determined through measuring the H2O2 generated by the oxidation of glucose in the presence of glucose oxidase at pH 7.6. The present method provides a source for H2O2, which, in turn, coupled with the luminol-KIO4-H2O2 CL reaction system. The CL was linearly correlated with glucose concentration of 0.6-110 mu g ml(-1). The relative standard deviation was 2.1% for 10 mu g ml(-1) (N = 11). Detection limit of glucose was 0.08 mu g ml(-1). Ascorbic acid was also indirectly determined by the suppression of luminol-KIO4-H2O2 CL system. The calibration curve was linear over the range of 1.0 x 10(-7)-1.0 x 10(-5) mol l(-1) of ascorbic acid. The relative standard deviation was 1.0% for 8.0 x 10(-7) mol l(-1) (N = 11). Detection limit of ascorbic acid was 6.0 x 10(=8) mol l(-1). These proposed methods have been applied to determine glucose, ascorbic acid in tablets and injection. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. A new Er(III)-Na(I) coordination polymer of stoichiometry [NaEr2L5(H2O)(6)(NO3)](NO3). 3.5H(2)O (HL = picolinic acid N-oxide) has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Crystals are triclinic, P (1) over bar with a = 9.823(2), b = 12.453(2), c = 20.643(4) Angstrom; alpha = 98.49(3), beta = 101.40(3), gamma = 108.69(3)degrees; V = 2284(1) Angstrom(3); Z = 2. Of the two independent eight-coordinate erbium(III) ions in this complex, one is surrounded by four bidentate chelating L ligands, and the other by one bidentate chelating L ligand, four aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two neighboring [ErL4] units. The sodium(I) ion is in a distorted octahedral environment, being coordinated by a unidentate nitrate anion, three aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two adjacent [ErL4] units. The complex is built from zigzag chains of syn-anti carboxylate-bridged erbium(III) moieties directed in the a direction, which are cross-linked pairwise by aqua-bridged dimeric sodium(I) units. The resulting composite polymeric chains are further connected by hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional network.

Some novel binary and ternary complexes of rare earth(Gd, Eu,Tb) with N-Phenylanthranilic acid and 1,10-Phenanthroline were synthesized by homogenous precipitation and their compositions were characterized by,elemental analysis, IR spectra and UV-Vis spectra, The triplet state energies of N-Phenylanthranilic acid was determined to be 24 330 cm(-1) with the phosphorescence spectra of its gadolinium complexes and the energy match between the ligand and the central rare earth ions was studied. The photophysical properties such as luminescence properties and intramolecular energy transfer match between rare earth ions and ligands and between ligands were discussed. The result indicates that terbium complexes with N-Phenylanthranilic acid and 1,10-Phenanthroline have excellent luminescence properties.

In situ microscopic FTIR spectroelectrochemistry behavior of L-ascorbic acid (H(2)A) in polymer electrolyte is reported for the first time. H(2)A undergoes a two-step oxidation, The oxidation waves shift towards more anodic potential values when the scan rate increases. The peak currents of the oxidation waves are proportional to the square roots of scan rate up to 100 mV/s, The in situ infrared spectra suggest that the product of the oxidation be dehydroascorbic acid, which may exist as a dimer.

The theoretical model[17] of an ultramicroelectrode modified with a redox species film is used as the diagnostic tool to characterize the catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid at carbon fiber ultramicrodisk electrodes coated with an Eastman-AQ-Os(bpy)(3)(2+) film. The electrocatalytic behavior of ascorbic acid at the ultramicroelectrode modified by an Eastman-AQ polymer containing tris(2,2'-bipyridine) osmium(III/II) as mediators is described. In order to determine the five characteristic currents quantitatively, the radius of the ultramicroelectrode and the concentration of ascorbic acid are varied systematically. The kinetic zone diagram has been used to study the electrocatalytic system. This system with 0.5-2.75 mM ascorbic acid belongs to SR + E case, and the concentration profiles of the catalyst in the film are given in detail. Finally, optimizing the design of catalytic system is discussed.

Molecular layer of tungstosilicic acid (H4SiW12O40) deposited on freshly-cleaved highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) was observed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in air at room temperature. The molecular dimension (11.5 Angstrom) of H4SiW12O40 measured by STM is consistent with known crystallographic parameter. We also imaged the boundary of H4SiW12O40 molecular layer on HOPG showing that molecular layer of H4SiW12O40 was formed. It has been proved that individual tungstosilicic acid species is imaged. The probable reason for the formation of the molecular layer is also discussed.

A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method with amperometric detection is described for the separation and quantification of uric acid, guanine, hypoxanthine and xanthine. The isocratic separation of a standard mixture of the compounds was achieved in 5 min on a Spherisorb 5 C-18 reversed-phase column, with a mobile phase of NaH2PO4 (300 mmol dm(-3) pH 3.0)-methanol-acetonitrile-tetrahydrofuran (97.8 + 0.5 + 1.5 + 0.2). Uric acid, guanine, hypoxanthine and xanthine were completely separated, with detection limits in the range 2-20 pmol per injection. The effect of pH and the composition of the mobile phase on the separation are described. The hydrodynamic voltammograms of these compounds were recorded at a glassy carbon electrode. The linear range of the calibration graph for each compound was: uric acid; 1-5000 mu mol dm(-3); guanine, 0.5-2000 mu mol dm(-3); hypoxanthine, 0.1-500 mu mol dm(-3) and xanthine, 0.5-5000 mu mol dm(-3). The within- and between-day precision was good. The uric acid and hypoxanthine content in human plasma was measured using the proposed method. Good recoveries of uric acid (97.9-103%), hypoxanthine (98.0-99.2%), guanine (96.0-98.3%) and xanthine (96.0-102%) were obtained from human plasma. The results of electrochemical detection were in good agreement with those of UV detection.
