Studies show the positive effects that video games can have on student performance and attitude towards learning. In the past few years, strategies have been generated to optimize the use of technological resources with the aim of facilitating widespread adoption of technology in the classroom. Given its low acquisition and maintenance costs, the interpersonal computer allows individual interaction and simultaneous learning with large groups of students. The purpose of this work was to compare arithmetical knowledge acquired by third-grade students through the use of game-based activities and non-game-based activities using an interpersonal computer, with knowledge acquired through the use of traditional paper-and-pencil activities, and to analyze their impact in various socio-cultural contexts. To do this, a quasi-experimental study was conducted with 271 students in three different countries (Brazil, Chile, and Costa Rica), in both rural and urban schools. A set of educational games for practising arithmetic was developed and tested in six schools within these three countries. Results show that there were no significant differences (ANCOVA) in the learning acquired from game-based vs. non-game-based activities. However, both showed a significant difference when compared with the traditional method. Additionally, both groups using the interpersonal computer showed higher levels of student interest than the traditional method group, and these technological methods were seen to be especially effective in increasing learning among weaker students.

Objectives: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the surfaces of commercially pure titanium (cpTi) implants surface modified by laser beam (LS), by laser beam associated with sodium silicate deposition (SS) and compare them with surfaces modified by dual-acid etched (AS) and with machined surface (MS). Methods: thirty rabbits received two implants each (one for each tibia). After 30, 60 and 90 days postoperative, the implants were removed by reverse torque for biomechanical analysis and surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results: the mean values of reverse torque at 30, 60 and 90 days postoperative were respectively 24.60, 43.60 e 60.40 N.cm to MS, 43.00, 68.20 e 63.80 N.cm to AS group, 59.80, 76.60 e 78.00 N.cm to LS group and 63.00, 75.40 e 76.60 N.cm to SS group. At 30 days, LS and SS groups showed statistically significant difference (p<0.05) compared to the other groups. At 60 days, LS and SS groups showed statistically significant difference (p<0.05) when compared to MS. Conclusions: it was concluded that SL and SS implants' biomechanical and topographical properties increased bone-implant interaction when compared to the AS and MS implants.

The new technologies have increasingly provided access to foreign languages and cultures and also to authentic communication. If we consider that the foreign languages teaching/learning process and teachers’ education can be enriched by telecollaboration, I believe it is necessary to observe the roles played by language teachers. Based on an ethnographic qualitative study carried out with Brazilian and foreign university students, this paper focuses on teletandem practice, a distance tandem modality carried out by audio and video conferences with resources such as Windows Live Messenger, Skype or ooVoo, to investigate roles played by language teachers in telecollaborative practice. The data were collected from (a) e-mails exchanged between the partners and between partners and the mediator-teacher; (b) DVDs of interaction sessions recordings; (c) written teletandem sessions recordings; (d) recordings of interviews between the partners and the researcher at ooVoo; (e) fi eld notes taken at Teletandem Laboratory at UNESP- Assis; and (f) participants’ written reports. The data analysis, from the hermeneutic interpretative perspective, revealed that the teacher is not ignored but is given new roles to maximize the process towards meaningful and intercultural learning.

To evaluate the effectiveness of isopropyl alcohol, saline or distilled water to prevent the precipitate formed between sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX) and its effect on the bond strength of an epoxy-based sealer in radicular dentine. Methodology The root canals of 50 extracted human canines (n = 10) were instrumented. In G1, root canals were irrigated with 17% EDTA and 2.5% NaOCl; G2, as G1, except that 2% CHX was used as the final irrigant. In the other groups, intermediate flushes with isopropyl alcohol (G3), saline (G4) or distilled water (G5) were used between NaOCl and CHX. The specimens were submitted to SEM analysis to evaluate the presence of debris and smear layer, in the apical and cervical segments. In sequence, fifty extracted human canines were distributed into five groups (n = 10), similar to the SEM study. After root filling, the roots were sectioned transversally to obtain dentine slices, in the cervical, middle and apical thirds. The root filling was submitted to a push-out bond strength test using an electromechanical testing machine. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal–Wallis and Dunn's tests (α = 5%). Results All groups had similar amounts of residue precipitated on the canal walls (P > 0.05). The push-out bond strength values were similar for all groups, independently of the root third evaluated (P > 0.05). Conclusions Isopropyl alcohol, saline and distilled water failed to prevent the precipitation of residues on canal walls following the use of NaOCl and CHX. The residues did not interfere with the push-out bond strength of the root filling.

The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of genotype-environment interaction, as well as its effects on the magnitude of genetic parameters and the classification of Nellore breeding bulls for the trait adjusted weight at 205 days (W205) on Southern Brazil. The components of (co)variance were estimated by Bayesian inference, using a linear-linear animal model in a bi-trait analysis. The proposed model for the analyses considers as random the direct additive genetic and maternal effects and residual effects, and as fixed effects the contemporary groups, sex, season of birth and weighing, and calving age as covariable (linear and quadratic effects). The a posteriori mean estimates of the direct heritabilities for W205 in the three States varied from 0.24 in Paraná (PR) to 0.34 in Santa Catarina (SC). The estimates of maternal heritability varied from 0.23 in SC and Rio Grande do Sul (RS) to 0.28 in PR. The a posteriori mean distributions of the genetic correlation varied from 0.52 between SC and RS, to 0.84 between PR and RS, suggesting that the best breeding bulls in SC are not the same as in RS.

The aim of this in vitro study was to use strain gauge (SG) analysis to compare the effects of the implant-abutment joint, the coping, and the location of load on strain distribution in the bone around implants supporting 3-unit fixed partial prostheses. Three external hexagon (EH) implants and 3 internal hexagon (IH) implants were inserted into 2 polyurethane blocks. Microunit abutments were screwed onto their respective implant groups. Machined cobalt-chromium copings and plastic copings were screwed onto the abutments, which received standard wax patterns. The wax patterns were cast in a cobalt-chromium alloy (n = 5): group 1 = EH/machined. group 2 = EH/plastic, group 3 = IH/machined, and group 4 = IH/plastic. Four SGs were bonded onto the surface of the block tangentially to the implants. Each metallic structure was screwed onto the abutments and an axial load of 30 kg was applied at 5 predetermined points. The magnitude of microstrain on each SG was recorded in units of microstrain (mu epsilon). The data were analyzed using 3-factor repeated measures analysis of variance and a Tukey test (alpha = 0.05). The results showed statistically significant differences for the type of implant-abutment joint, loading point, and interaction at the implant-abutment joint/loading point. The IH connection showed higher microstrain values than the EH connection. It was concluded that the type of coping did not interfere in the magnitude of microstrain, but the implant/abutment joint and axial loading location influenced this magnitude.

Blockade of central angiotensin receptors with the specific antagonist [Leu8]-ANG II abolished water ingestion and water and sodium excretion induced by infusion of angiotensin II (ANGII) into the lateral ventricle (LV) of rats. The antagonist reduced but did not suppress the salt appetite induced by ANGII infusion. Subcutaneous injection of deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) caused increases in water and 3% NaCl ingestion and decreases in sodium excretion. When central ANGII infusion was combined with peripheral DOCA, the water intake was similar to that induced by ANGII alone and the ingestion of 3% NaCl was increased, whereas sodium excretion was inhibited. When ANGII was infused alone, a detailed temporal analysis of fluid and sodium balance showed a negative balance similar those saline controls that persisted throughout the experiment. Combined administration of ANGII and DOCA induce significant changes in water and sodium balance. Sodium and water maintained a positive balance through out the 8-h experiment. The data support an interaction of central ANGII and DOCA on sodium intake and water and sodium balance. © 1994.

Dermatophytes are adapted to infect skin, hair and nails by their ability to utilize keratin as a nutrient source. Trichophyton rubrum is an anthropophilic fungus, causing up to 90% of chronic cases of dermatophytosis. The understanding of the complex interactions between the fungus and its host should include the identification of genes expressed during infection. To identify the genes involved in the infection process, representational difference analysis (RDA) was applied to two cDNA populations from T. rubrum, one transcribed from the RNA of fungus cultured in the presence of keratin and the other from RNA generated during fungal growth in minimal medium. The analysis identified differentially expressed transcripts. Genes related to signal transduction, membrane protein, oxidative stress response, and some putative virulence factors were up-regulated during the contact of the fungus with keratin. The expression patterns of these genes were also verified by real-time PCR, in conidia of T. rubrum infecting primarily cultured human keratinocytes in vitro, revealing their potential role in the infective process. A better understanding of this interaction will contribute significantly to our knowledge of the process of dermatophyte infection.

This study presented an epidemiological data of 177 medical records of patients affected by oral and pharyngeal cancers with prosthesis indication. The gender, age, sun exposure, disease diagnosis, cancer anatomic site, radiation treatment and type of prosthesis, death from oral and pharyngeal cancers were collected. Data were analyzed by summary measures and logistic regression analysis. The mean age of the patients was 62.7 years, and 46.8% died between 52 and 62 years old. Most of the patients were male (74%), and 42% died among them. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most prevalent cancer (75.1%) and 42.1% of these patients died. The age, gender, diagnosis and the interaction of these factors exhibited strong association with the patients’ death (P<.05, Chi-square test). The multivariate odds ratios (OR) of the death were 0.40 for women and 0.39 for other pathologies versus male and squamous cell carcinoma, respectively. It was concluded that age, gender and diagnosis of cancer had significant effect on patients’ death.

In this paper we investigate the social interaction established between monitors and student-visitors to a science museum in terms of knowledge mobilized by the explanation about principle operating of Van De Graff Generator. Our research was conducted at a university public that maintains a Center of Sciences and the data were collected through recording video and audio of the dialogues established around a demonstration experiment. Data analysis is established around the conceptual correctness of the explanations made by the monitors. We also conducted a structured interview from a single question: what is the main difficulty faced in planning and conducting his presentation at the Science Center? The results show that the monitors were not able to exceed the process description of the operation of the experimental equipment, not being able to establish an interaction that fosters discussions of scientific concepts with visitors. Our research also found that, although the university maintained a Sciences Center, not there is a link between teacher training and activities in non-formal settings.

This text is the result of a larger study into the role of the mother tongue in the construction of school knowledge, with a view to promoting gains in the performance of teenagers. The three objectives in this particular paper are: (1) to address Feuerstein's ideas, how the mother tongue interrelates with specific content, and the management of pedagogical interaction; (2) to illustrate enriched interaction during interventions by the researcher; and (3) to point out that supervised internship actions may help underachieving students. This is done in light of an interpretive analysis of the specialized literature, course books, reports and notes concerning interventions with students, and video and audio recordings. The analysis of interactions and student output following the researcher's interventions reveals increased awareness and change regarding school knowledge and how speaking/writing about specific content may enhance their performance in the completion of pedagogical tasks.
