Thermal properties and degree of conversion (DC%) of two composite resins (microhybrid and nanocomposite) and two photo-activation methods (continuous and gradual) displayed by the light-emitting diode (LED) light-curing units (LCUs) were investigated in this study. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermal analysis technique was used to investigate the glass transition temperature (T(g)) and degradation temperature. The DC% was determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results showed that the microhybrid composite resin presented the highest T(g) and degradation temperature values, i.e., the best thermal stability. Gradual photo-activation methods showed higher or similar T(g) and degradation temperature values when compared to continuous method. The Elipar Freelight 2 (TM) LCU showed the lowest T(g) values. With respect to the DC%, the photo-activation method did not influence the final conversion of composite resins. However, Elipar Freelight 2 (TM) LCU and microhybrid resin showed the lowest DC% values. Thus, the presented results suggest that gradual method photo-activation with LED LCUs provides adequate degree of conversion without promoting changes in the polymer chain of composite resins. However, the thermal properties and final conversion of composite resins can be influenced by the kind of composite resin and LCU.

Dentin hypersensitivity is a common condition associated with high dental pain. A new LED-based (light emitting diode) light source has been used as an experimental tool in some studies. Purpose: The main objective was to compare these two light sources emitting in the same spectral band (red from 625 to 660 nm) to promote pain relief. Material and methods: A total of 6 sessions were accomplished, being three irradiation sessions and three follow-up sessions. This single-blind study compared a control group (Placebo) and two other groups with different equipments: low laser intensity treatment (LILT) and a light emitting diode system treatment (LEDT). Results: The results showed that there is no statistical difference between LILT and LEDT groups, however, both were better than control group (p=0.01) in terms of treatment efficiency; there is no difference between the second and the third sessions for both treatment, it means that the third session was not necessary; finally, the improvement at the end of the entire research (follow up care of 30 days) was very expressive in comparison to pre-treatment situation for all teeth (p=0.01). Conclusion: LILT and LEDT were equally effective to treat dentine hypersensitivity, a 3rd treatment session was not necessary/two sessions are enough.

The ability of Staphylococcus aureus to develop multidrug resistance is well documented, and the antibiotic resistance showed by an increasing number of bacteria has shown the need for alternative therapies to treat infections, photodynamic therapy (PDT) being a potential candidate. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of photodynamic therapy as a light-based bactericidal modality to eliminate Staphylococcus aureus. The study investigated a technique based on a combination of light and a photosensitizer that is capable of producing oxidative species to induce a cytotoxic effect. A Staphylococcus aureus suspension was exposed to a light emitting diode (LED) emitting at 628 nm, 14.6 mW/cm(2), and energy density of 20J/cm(2), 40J/cm(2), or 60 J/cm(2) in the presence of different porphyrin concentrations (PhotogemA (R)). Three drug concentrations were employed: 12 mu l/ml, 25 mu l/ml, and 50 mu l/ml. The treatment response was evaluated by the number of bacterial colony forming units (CFU) after light exposure. The results indicated that exposure to 60 J/cm(2) eliminated 100% (10 log(10) scales) of bacteria, on average. The best PDT response rate to eliminate Staphylococcus aureus was achieved with exposure to LED light in combination with the photosensitizer at concentrations ranging from 25 mu l/ml to 50 mu l/ml. These data suggest that PDT has the potential to eliminate Staphylococcus aureus in suspension and indicates the necessary drug concentration and light fluency.

To evaluate the cytotoxicity of PDT (photodynamic therapy) with Photogem (R) associated to blue LED (light-emitting diode) on L929 and MDPC-23 cell cultures, 30000 cells/cm(2) were seeded in 24-well plates for 48 h, incubated with Photogem (R) (10, 25 or 50 mg/l) and irradiated with an LED source (460 +/- 3 nm; 22 mW/cm(2)) at two energy densities (25.5 or 37.5 J/cm(2)). Cell metabolism was evaluated by the MTT (methyltetrazolium) assay (Dunnet`s post hoc tests) and cell morphology by SEM (scanning electron microscopy). Flow cytometry analysed the type of PDT-induced cell death as well and estimated intracellular production of ROS (reactive oxygen species). There was a statistically significant decrease of mitochondrial activity (90% to 97%) for all Photogem (R) concentrations associated to blue LED, regardless of irradiation time. It was also demonstrated that the mitochondrial activity was not recovered after 12 or 24 h, characterizing irreversible cell damage. PDT-treated cells presented an altered morphology with ill-defined limits. In both cell lines, there was a predominance of necrotic cell death and the presence of Photogem (R) or irradiation increased the intracellular levels of ROS. PDT caused severe toxic effects in normal cell culture, characterized by the reduction of the mitochondrial activity, morphological alterations and induction of necrotic cell death.

A polyfluorene derivative of the PPV, poly(9,9`-n-dihexyl-2,7-fluorenedilvinylene-alt-1,4-phenylenevinylene), with a strong tendency to aggregation was blended with several members of a series composed by poly(alkyl methacrylate)s with the following substituents in the ester position: methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, isobutyl, n-butyl, and cyclohexyl. The de-aggregation effect in blends was studied by steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopy using several blend compositions. The efficiency of each dispersing phase was discussed in terms of the polymer miscibility, controlled by interaction parameters between the polyfluorene and every poly(alkyl methacrylate)s, here described using Hilde-brand solubility parameters. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) using Methylene Blue (MB) as the photosensitizing compound and a Light-Emitting Diode (LED) in American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL). Hamsters were experimentally infected with Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. After the development of the lesions in the footpad, the animals were treated with MB three times a week for 3 months. Ten minutes after each application of MB, the lesions were irradiated with LED for 1 h. The lesions were evaluated weekly by the measurement of the hamster footpad thickness. At the end of the treatment the parasitic load was quantified in the regional lymph node of the hamsters. The treatment promoted a decrease in the thickness of infected footpad (P = 0.0001) and reduction in the parasitic load in the regional lymph node (P = 0.0007) of the animals from group treated with MB + LED. PDT using MB + LED in ACL caused by L. amazonensis shows a strong photodynamic effect. This therapy is very promising, once it is an inexpensive system and the own patient can apply it in their wound and in their house without the need of technical assistance. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. Fabrication and electroluminescent properties of devices containing europium complexes of general formula [Eu(ACIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)], where ACIND, 2-acyl-1,3-indandionate ligands: and TPPO, triphenylphosphine oxide. as emitter layers are discussed. The double-layer devices based on these complexes present the following configurations: device 1: ITO/TPD/[Eu(AlND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al: device 2: ITO/TPD/[Eu(ISOV-IND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al and device 3: ITO/TPD/[Eu(BIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al, where AlND, 2-acetyl-1,3-indandionate; ISOVIND, 2-isovaleryl-1,3-indandionate; and BIND, 2-benzoyl-1,3-indandionate, respectively. These devices exhibited photo and electroluminescent emissions. An important characteristic presented by devices is that their electroluminescent (EL) spectra, in the region of (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4) transitions of Eu(3+) ion, show profiles that are different from photoluminescent (PL) ones. In addition to narrow bands arising from intraconfigurational-4f(6) transitions, devices 1 and 2 also exhibited a broad band with maximum at around 500 nm which is assigned to electrophosphorescence from the indandionate ligands. On the other hand, EL spectra of device 3 present only narrow bands from (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) transitions. [Eu(ACIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)] complexes are promising candidates to prepare efficient organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) when compared with those containing Eu(3+)-complexes of aliphatic beta-diketonate anions. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the storage time on the thermal properties of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate/2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxy-prop-1-oxy)-phenyl]propane bisphenyl-alpha-glycidyl ether dimethacrylate (TB) copolymers used in formulations of dental resins after photopolymerization. The TB copolymers were prepared by photopolymerization with an Ultrablue IS light-emitting diode, stored in the dark for 160 days at 37 degrees C, and characterized with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection. DSC curves indicated the presence of an exothermic peak, confirming that the reaction was not completed during the photopolymerization process. This exothermic peak became smaller as a function of the storage time and was shifted at higher temperatures. In DMA studies, a plot of the loss tangent versus the temperature initially showed the presence of two well-defined peaks. The presence of both peaks confirmed the presence of residual monomers that were not converted during the photopolymerization process. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nos últimos dez anos, milhares de trabalhos foram publicados somente no desenvolvimento da técnica de eletroforese capilar (CE) e suas aplicações em ciências biológicas, química e em outras áreas. Apesar disto, muitos tópicos de pesquisa básica da CE ainda continuam sendo desenvolvidos. Algumas vantagens da CE sobre as demais técnicas de separação são marcantes, tais como: possibilidade de automação, rapidez na obtenção dos resultados e alto poder de resolução. A pequena quantidade de amostra que é necessária para uma análise é uma característica muito interessante no estudo de sistemas biológicos, sendo que normalmente são injetados no capilar, volumes de 5 a 50 nl de amostra. Por outro lado, esta reduzida quantidade de amostra utilizada, a pequena janela de detecção e as baixas concentrações dos analitos nas amostras biológicas, são fatores que desafiam os pesquisadores nesta área. Para contornar este problema diversos métodos de pré-concentração de amostra foram desenvolvidos. Neste trabalho, foi desenvolvido um método inédito de pré-concentração de amostras através de gradientes térmicos em CE. O princípio do método é concentrar o analito quando ele passa de uma zona de alta temperatura para uma zona de baixa temperatura. Um modelo teórico foi desenvolvido para auxiliar o planejamento experimental no que diz respeito à determinação das condições em que a corrida deve ser realizada (pH, tipo de tampão, temperatura) para aplicar a compressão térmica em um analito. Foi utilizado L-Lisina derivatizada com naftaleno 2,3-dicarboxialdeído (Lys/NDA) como analito modelo. Uma diferença de temperatura de 58 °C entre as duas zonas térmicas foi suficiente para comprimir em 2,5 vezes a banda da Lys/NDA em um tampão de baixo coeficiente térmico com o pH ajustado para 8,7. O método de compressão de banda por gradientes térmicos proposto neste trabalho é uma nova opção para aumentar a sensibilidade e a resolução em CE. Ao contrário dos métodos clássicos de pré-concentração, esse novo método pode ser aplicado em amostras tanto com alta ou baixa condutividade iônica, comprimir bandas de analitos aniônicos ou catiônicos e ser aplicado em corridas em solução livre ou não. Além disso, considerando que o controle de temperatura seja realizado de maneira automatizada, pode apresentar altas taxas de reprodutibilidade, além de ser de simples e de fácil aplicação, podendo ser empregado em análises de rotina. Diferentes LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) foram testado em detector por fluorescência induzida por LED. Além disso, um novo sistema de aquisição de dados e tratamento de sinal utilizando a placa de som de um PC (Personal Computer) e um amplificador Lock-in emulado por software foi montado e comparado com um sistema de aquisição de dados convencional. O equipamento de CE utilizado neste trabalho com esses componentes, apresentou uma elevada sensibilidade, na faixa de 0,5 à 1 fmol para os peptídeos e aminoácidos testados e foi superior ao sistema convencional em vários aspectos como: sensibilidade de detecção, faixa linear de detecção em concentração do analito, facilidade de operação e custo do sistema.

A PPV derivative, poly(2-methoxy,5-(n-octadecyl)-p-phenylenevinylene) (OC1OC18-PPV), has been synthesized via the Gilch route and used to fabricate Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. True monomolecular films were formed at the air/water interface, which were successfully transferred onto different types of substrate. Using UV-visible absorption, FTIR, fluorescence and Raman scattering spectroscopies we observed that the polymer molecules were randomly distributed in the LB film, with no detectable anisotropy. This is in contrast to the anisotropic LB films of a previously reported PPV derivative, poly(2-methoxy-5-n-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene (OC1OC6-PPV), which is surprising because the longer chain of OC1OC18-PPV investigated here was expected to lead to more ordered films. As a consequence of the lack of order, LB films of OC1OC18-PPV exhibit lower photoconductivity and require higher operating voltage in a polymer light-emitting diode (PLED) in comparison with LB films of OC1OC6-PPV. This result confirms the importance of molecular organization in the LB film to obtain efficient PLEDs. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The advantages offered by the electronic component LED (Light Emitting Diode) have caused a quick and wide application of this device in replacement of incandescent lights. However, in its combined application, the relationship between the design variables and the desired effect or result is very complex and it becomes difficult to model by conventional techniques. This work consists of the development of a technique, through comparative analysis of neuro-fuzzy architectures, to make possible to obtain the luminous intensity values of brake lights using LEDs from design data.

The aims of this in vivo study were to compare the effectiveness and color stability of at-home and in-office bleaching techniques and to evaluate whether the use of light sources can alter bleaching results. According to preestablished criteria, 40 patients were selected and randomly divided into four groups according to bleaching treatment: (1) at-home bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide, (2) in-office bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) without a light source, (3) in-office bleaching with 35% HP with quartz-tungsten-halogen light, and (4) in-office bleaching with 35% HP with a light-emitting diode/laser. Tooth shade was evaluated using the VITA Classical Shade Guide before bleaching as well as after the first and third weeks of bleaching. Tooth shade was evaluated again using the same guide 1 and 6 months after the completion of treatment. The shade guide was arranged to yield scores that were used for statistical comparison. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test showed no significant differences among the groups for any time point (P > .01). There was no color rebound in any of the groups. The bleaching techniques tested were equally effective. Light sources are unnecessary to bleach teeth. (Int J Periodontics Restorative Dent 2012;32:303-309.)
