The strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolated from water, sediment, plankton, fish and prawn of Cochin backwater were tested for sensitivity to ten antibiotics namely, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamycin, kanamycin, neomycin, oxytetracycline, penicillin, polymyxin-B, streptomycin and sulphadiazine. Of the 120 isolates tested, 96.7 and 93.3% were sensitive to gentamycin and chloramphenicol respectively. No strain was sensitive to penicillin and only 5% were sensitive to kanamycin. Isolates from fish and prawn showed higher resistance to ampicillin and none of them was sensitive to kanamycin. Multiple resistant V. parahaemolyticus strains were more in prawn than in other samples.

The bacterial quality and sand content of commercial frozen boiled clam meat are discussed. In general the commercial frozen boiled clam meat belonging to the Villorita cyprinoides sp. collected from Cochin are highly contaminated with faecal indicator and pathogenic organisms than that belonging to the Katelysia opima sp. collected from Quilon. The studies also show that the bacterial quality of frozen boiled clam meat can be improved by enforcing better hygienic and sanitary practices.

Commercial samples of frozen shrimp of different styles of presentation and size grades were tested for sensory, physical (cooked yield and pH) and biochemical characteristics (moisture, total nitrogen, water extractable nitrogen, nonprotein nitrogen, alpha amino nitrogen, total volatile nitrogen and trimethylamine nitrogen). The test results are compared and correlated. The order of preference of the samples were HL>PUD>P & D. There was significant correlation between sensory score of cooked sample and WEN, NPN and ∞ – NHsub(2)-N values. TVN and TMA-N did not exhibit any correlation with sensory score. It is inferred that in quality measurement of frozen shrimps of commerce the quantity of water soluble components and the total dry matter can be used to support the sensory test results.

Growth and survival of P. japonicus postlarvae was studied using Tapes philippinarum and commercial formula feeds. After a 28-day feeding period, the highest survival rate of 100% was obtained in prawns receiving Diet-B, followed by those on Tapes Kyowa Hakko shrimp meal with survival rates of 80 and 76.7%, respectively. The lowest survival rate of 48.3% was obtained among postlarvae fed with squid meal. In this batch cannibalism was observed which resulted in low survival. Growth was highest in the postlarvae fed with Kyowa Hakko and mysid feeds. Diet-B gave a slightly lower weight increase but gave similar gain in length. The composition of the artificial diet, Diet-B, and growth and survival rates are tabulated.

Climate change is expected to have significant impact on the future thermal performance of buildings. Building simulation and sensitivity analysis can be employed to predict these impacts, guiding interventions to adapt buildings to future conditions. This article explores the use of simulation to study the impact of climate change on a theoretical office building in the UK, employing a probabilistic approach. The work studies (1) appropriate performance metrics and underlying modelling assumptions, (2) sensitivity of computational results to identify key design parameters and (3) the impact of zonal resolution. The conclusions highlight the importance of assumptions in the field of electricity conversion factors, proper management of internal heat gains, and the need to use an appropriately detailed zonal resolution. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. The effects of dietary supplementation of commercial human probiotic, Lactobacil and antibiotic, oxytetracycline on the growth, survival, disease resistance and content of intestinal microflora in two ornamental fishes, viz., goldfish, Carassius auratus and swordtail, Xiphophorus helleri were studied. The total wet weight gain, food conversion ratio and specific growth rate of C. auratus did not vary significantly (p>0.05) among treatments. While in X. helleri, significant differences existed in the total wet weight gain, survival, food conversion ratio and specific growth rate among treatment groups (p<0.05). The counts of antibiotic resistant bacteria in fish gut increased with days of culture in all the treatments and the increase was more in antibiotic fed fishes. A reduction in the development of antibiotic resistance among the bacterial flora of fish gut was noticed in probiotic fed groups of C auratus and X. helleri. The results of the present study revealed that the effects of human probiotic on the growth, survival and disease resistance of ornamental fishes are variable and difficult to reproduce the similar effect on different species.

About 3600 specimens were collected by bottom trawl at 15 sampling stations. 24 biometric characters were measured for each specimens at the laboratory.. Microscopic cross – sections of statolith were used for age determination. Sex determination and fecundity were determined. Population dynamics parameters as well as stock as stock assessment including cohort analysis were estimated using FISAT software. The findings showed that Dorsal Mantle Length (DML) and Body weight (BW) of the Indian squid were 133.9 ± 0.78 mm and 99.61 ± 0.95 g respectively. Strong correlation was found between these 2 variables (R2 = 0.90). The maximum age was 5 years. Relationship between DML and age was highly significantly of p ≤ 0.05. Overall sex ratio (M: F = 0.52) was significantly different from the expected 1:1 ratio (p ≤ 0.05). The ovary weight and nidamental glands weight were 7.72 ± 0.0006 g and 3.07 ± 0.0003g respectively. Absolute and relative fecundity of the Indian squid were found to be 122733 ± 30.87 and 2348 ± 0.4 respectively. GSI were 14.35 in April and 8.63 in July. This squid is therefore a spring spawner. The infinite dorsal mantle length were 258.62 mm for females, 194.72 mm for males and 252.02 for both sexes respectively. For population growth and mortality parameters; K (0.65 per year for both sexes, 0.85 per year for males, 0.65 per year for females); t0 (0.24year for both sexes, 0.22 year in females, 0.26 year in male); φ` (2.30 in both sexes, 2.47 for males, 2.37 for females); Z (1.17 per year for both sexes, 1.10 per year in females, 1.39 per year, in males); M (0.70 per year for both sexes, 0.90 for males, 0.67 for females); F(0.27 per year for both sexes, 0.27 per year in males, 0.195 per year in females). Exploitation coefficient were 0.51 per year for both sexes, 0.57 per year males and 0.51 per year females respectively. The results indicates that since the Indian squid is a short live aquatic organism, therefore, the exploitation coefficient could be raised to 0.7 per year. The analysis showed that total biomass and MSY were 10103.5 ton and 2576.4 ton respectively. These findings are the first study of its sort about the Indian squid in the coastal waters of Oman Sea as well as North-West of Indian Ocean.

The commercial landings of fish in three areas of the Kafue Floodplain were examined in regard to thhing technique used, catch per unit effort, and species composition and length size. Gillnets were used throughout the year although predominantly in the wet season, and drawnets (similar to beach seines) were used at periods of low water level. Fishermen used a varying number of gillnets in each area, and the catehes also varied according to month. Principal species caught on the floodplain were clarias gariepinus and Tilapia andersoni. There are indications that, whereas the catch per gillnet in the year's 1965-1970 may be lower than in the 1950s. The drawnet calch per unit of effort of these later years is higher than in the 1950s.
