Evolução paleogeográfica e paleobiogeográfica do Caloviano-Kimeridgiano do Algarve

The littoral and the «barrocal» of the Algarve correspond in part to a meso-cenozoic sedimentary basin with a deeping south monocline structure, cut by North-South faults and by two East-West longitudinal flexures. The lithostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic study of the Jurassic formations, undertaken during the last years, allow a better knowledge of the paleogeographic and paleobiogeographic evolution of these formations and particularly of the Callovian-Kimmeridgian. Lower Callovian facies, being similar from Sagres in the West to beyond Tavira, show the uniformity of the sedimentary conditions. Since Middle Callovian, the beginning of the regressive cycle is responsible for a major unconformity between Dogger and Malm. During the Lower Oxfordian a new sedimentary cycle begins with a transgression afecting the region south of the Albufeira-São Brás de Alportel-Tavira line thus originating a gulf centered in the Loulé area which rapidly diminishes since the Lower Kimmeridgian. The faunistic affinities are always tipically tethyan although some classic boreal fauna exist, in contrast with the Northern Tagus basin (where affinities are sub-boreal during the Callovian).

Inconstância, ausência e paradoxo na política para o livro no Estado Novo português

Neste artigo procura-se entender a dúplice forma como o Estado Novo em Portugal lidou com o livro como objecto de acção política. As tentativas de enquadrar o livro como alvo de promoção no sentido de um apoio efectivo e da adopção de medidas correctivas das disfunções do mercado, próprias de uma matriz contemporânea e aberta de sistemas políticos e sociais desenvolvidos, nunca terão verdadeiramente existido durante o período autocrático. Com efeito, desde o seu começo até meados da década de 1950 o regime hesitou entre fórmulas – isoladas – de suporte à edição e à leitura, que não pôde ou não quis consolidar, e opções tendentes a conseguir arregimentar agentes do livro (sobretudo editores e autores) à nunca concretizada literatura oficial do Estado Novo, e que obedecesse aos seus pressupostos. O caminho trilhado parece ter sido, a partir de dado momento, essencialmente o da repressão ao livro, pautando o poder a sua actuação pela ausência de propostas de fomento do mercado editorial e livreiro como as que se verificaram noutros contextos nacionais, inclusive ditatoriais.

O plano de deslocações urbanas e a resposta estratégica que falta aos PROTs e PDMs: A descentralização do planeamento do território e dos transportes

The sustainable urban mobility plan is the framework of planning and organisation of mobility system. It is a strategic and operational plan with consequences in the planning and organisation of territorial and transport systems. When it’s defining the principles and the objectives of sustainable development and when it’s working in the scenarios of modal shift more favourable to the alternative modes than the car, the planning and the organisation of territory will be integrated on the political of reduction of road circulation volumes, in the reduction of GEE, waste of space and time, in the improvement of quality of urban environment. The Urbanism Agencies and the Urban Transport Authorities will get their selves in the urban mobility plan, in territory scenarios development, mobility and transports, with the objective to understand the sustainable politics in the accessibilities which are available by the transportation bill. In Portugal, although the authorities are not yet working, the law (1/2009) recently approved in last December and published at the beginning of the year, they have the sustainable urban mobility plans forward in this strategy.

Synthesis of the Piacenzian onshore record between the Aveiro and Setubal parallels (Western portuguese margin)

Onshore, the Piacenzianof the Mondego and Lower Tagus Tertiary basins comprises siliciclastic sediments deposited in shallow marine to continental environments. The outcrops of the deposits are relatively widespread in the Aveiro and Seuibal region. A lithostratigraphic synthesis based on the correlation of geological sections, is presented for the two basins. In general, the Piacenzian sediments display a regressive sucession. The Late Tortonian-Zanclean (?) confined drainage pattern changed at the beginning of Piazencian, to fluvial systems draining to the Atlantic, and capturing the drainage of the inner parts of the Hesperic Meseta. The Piacenzian sedimentary sequence post-dates one of the uprising phases during Neogene compression, recorded by a strong regional unconformity. Some local active faulting - as in Lousa, Rio Maior and Senibal- Pinhal Novo - allowed the local thickening of the sedimentary record. Later compressive tectonism continues to generate reverse faulting and diapiric reactivation, affecting those sediments. Currently, the Piacenzian deposits culminates the marginal piedmonts, widely eroded by the Quaternary fluvial dissection.

Preservice teachers' knowledge on elementary geometry concepts

This text is based on a research, which is still in progress, whose main objective is to identify and understand what are the main difficulties of future mathematics teachers of basic education are, regarding their content knowledge in geometry in the context of the curricular unit of Geometry during their undergraduate degree. We chose a qualitative approach in the form of case study, in which data collection was done through observation, interviews, a diverse set of tasks, a diagnostic test and other documents. This paper focuses on the test given to prospective teachers at the beginning of the course. The preliminary analysis of the data points to a weak performance of preservice teachers in the test issues addressing elementary knowledge of Geometry

Application of fractional calculus in engineering

Fractional Calculus (FC) goes back to the beginning of the theory of differential calculus. Nevertheless, the application of FC just emerged in the last two decades. It has been recognized the advantageous use of this mathematical tool in the modelling and control of many dynamical systems. Having these ideas in mind, this paper discusses a FC perspective in the study of the dynamics and control of several systems. The paper investigates the use of FC in the fields of controller tuning, legged robots, electrical systems and digital circuit synthesis.

Control and dynamics of fractional order systems

Fractional Calculus (FC) goes back to the beginning of the theory of differential calculus. Nevertheless, the application of FC just emerged in the last two decades due to the progress in the area of nonlinear dynamics. This article discusses several applications of fractional calculus in science and engineering, namely: the control of heat systems, the tuning of PID controllers based on fractional calculus concepts and the dynamics in hexapod locomotion.
