Density distribution, fluid structure and solvation forces for fluids confined in Janus slit-shaped pores are investigated using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. By varying the degree of asymmetry between the two smooth surfaces that make up the slit pores, a wide variety of adsorption situations are observed. The presence of one moderately attractive surface in the asymmetric pore is sufficient to disrupt the formation of frozen phases observed in the symmetric case. In the extreme case of asymmetry in which one wall is repulsive, the pore fluid can consist of a frozen contact layer at the attractive surface for smaller surface separations (H) or a frozen contact layer with liquid-like and gas-like regions as the pore width is increased. The superposition approximation, wherein the solvation pressure and number density in the asymmetric pores can be obtained from the results on symmetric pores, is found to be accurate for H > 4 sigma(ff), where sigma(ff) is the Lennard-Jones fluid diameter and within 10% accuracy for smaller surface separations. Our study has implications in controlling stick slip and overcoming static friction `stiction' in micro and nanofluidic devices.

Laminar forced convection of nanofluids in a vertical channel with symmetrically mounted rib heaters on surfaces of opposite walls is numerically studied. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are examined for various Reynolds numbers and nanoparticles volume fractions of water-Al2O3 nanofluid. The flow exhibits various structures with varying Reynolds number. Even though the geometry and heating is symmetric with respect to a channel vertical mid-plane, asymmetric flow and heat transfer are found for Reynolds number greater than a critical value. Introduction of nanofluids in the base fluid delays the flow solution bifurcation point, and the critical Reynolds number increases with increasing nanoparticle volume fraction. A skin friction coefficient along the solid-fluid interfaces increases and decreases sharply along the bottom and top faces of the heaters, respectively, due to sudden acceleration and deceleration of the fluid at the respective faces. The skin friction coefficient, as well as Nusselt numbers in the channel, increase with increasing volume fraction of nanoparticles.

In this work the collapsing process of a spherically symmetric star, made of dust cloud, in the background of dark energy is studied for two different gravity theories separately, i.e., DGP Brane gravity and Loop Quantum gravity. Two types of dark energy fluids, namely, Modified Chaplygin gas and Generalised Cosmic Chaplygin gas are considered for each model. Graphs are drawn to characterize the nature and the probable outcome of gravitational collapse. A comparative study is done between the collapsing process in the two different gravity theories. It is found that in case of dark matter, there is a great possibility of collapse and consequent formation of Black hole. In case of dark energy possibility of collapse is far lesser compared to the other cases, due to the large negative pressure of dark energy component. There is an increase in mass of the cloud in case of dark matter collapse due to matter accumulation. The mass decreases considerably in case of dark energy due to dark energy accretion on the cloud. In case of collapse with a combination of dark energy and dark matter, it is found that in the absence of interaction there is a far better possibility of formation of black hole in DGP brane model compared to Loop quantum cosmology model.

We investigate the effect of a prescribed tangential velocity on the drag force on a circular cylinder in a spanwise uniform cross flow. Using a combination of theoretical and numerical techniques we make an attempt at determining the optimal tangential velocity profiles which will reduce the drag force acting on the cylindrical body while minimizing the net power consumption characterized through a non-dimensional power loss coefficient (C-PL). A striking conclusion of our analysis is that the tangential velocity associated with the potential flow, which completely suppresses the drag force, is not optimal for both small and large, but finite Reynolds number. When inertial effects are negligible (R e << 1), theoretical analysis based on two-dimensional Oseen equations gives us the optimal tangential velocity profile which leads to energetically efficient drag reduction. Furthermore, in the limit of zero Reynolds number (Re -> 0), minimum power loss is achieved for a tangential velocity profile corresponding to a shear-free perfect slip boundary. At finite Re, results from numerical simulations indicate that perfect slip is not optimum and a further reduction in drag can be achieved for reduced power consumption. A gradual increase in the strength of a tangential velocity which involves only the first reflectionally symmetric mode leads to a monotonic reduction in drag and eventual thrust production. Simulations reveal the existence of an optimal strength for which the power consumption attains a minima. At a Reynolds number of 100, minimum value of the power loss coefficient (C-PL = 0.37) is obtained when the maximum in tangential surface velocity is about one and a half times the free stream uniform velocity corresponding to a percentage drag reduction of approximately 77 %; C-PL = 0.42 and 0.50 for perfect slip and potential flow cases, respectively. Our results suggest that potential flow tangential velocity enables energetically efficient propulsion at all Reynolds numbers but optimal drag reduction only for Re -> infinity. The two-dimensional strategy of reducing drag while minimizing net power consumption is shown to be effective in three dimensions via numerical simulation of flow past an infinite circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of 300. Finally a strategy of reducing drag, suitable for practical implementation and amenable to experimental testing, through piecewise constant tangential velocities distributed along the cylinder periphery is proposed and analysed.

Some bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) exhibit high crack initiation toughness due to shear band mediated plastic flow at the crack tip and yet do not display additional resistance to crack growth due to the lack of a microstructure. Thus, at crack initiation, the fracture behavior of BMGs transits from that of ductile alloys to that of brittle ceramics. In this paper, we attempt to understand the physics behind the characteristic length from the notch root at which this transition occurs, through testing of four-point bend specimens made of a nominally ductile Zr-based BMG in three different structural states. In the as-cast state, both symmetric (mode I) and asymmetric (mixed mode) bend specimens are tested. The process of shear band mediated plastic flow followed by crack initiation at the notch root was monitored through in situ imaging. Results show that stable crack growth occurs inside a dominant shear band through a distance of, similar to 60 mu m, irrespective of the structural state and mode mixity, before attaining criticality. Detailed finite element simulations show that this length corresponds to the distance from the notch root over which a positive hydrostatic stress gradient prevails. The mean ridge heights on fractured surfaces are found to correlate with the toughness of the BMG. The Argon and Salama model, which is based on the meniscus instability phenomenon at the notch root, is modified to explain the experimentally observed physics of fracture in ductile BMGs. Structural health monitoring of existing infrastructure is currently an active field of research, where elaborate experimental programs and advanced analytical methods are used in identifying the current state of health of critical structures. Change of static deflection as the indicator of damage is the simplest tool in a structural health monitoring scenario of bridges that is least exploited in damage identification strategies. In this paper, some simple and elegant equations based on loss of symmetry due to damage are derived and presented for identification of damage in a bridge girder modeled as a simply supported beam using changes in static deflections and dynamic parameters. A single contiguous and distributed damage, typical of reinforced or prestressed concrete structures, is assumed for the structure. The methodology is extended for a base-line-free as well as base-line-inclusive measurement. Measurement strategy involves application of loads only at two symmetric points one at a time and deflection measurements at those symmetric points as well as at the midspan of the beam. A laboratory-based experiment is used to validate the approach. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

With no Channel State Information (CSI) at the users, transmission over the two-user Gaussian Multiple Access Channel with fading and finite constellation at the input, will have high error rates due to multiple access interference (MAI). However, perfect CSI at the users is an unrealistic assumption in the wireless scenario, as it would involve extremely large feedback overheads. In this paper we propose a scheme which removes the adverse effect of MAI using only quantized knowledge of fade state at the transmitters such that the associated overhead is nominal. One of the users rotates its constellation relative to the other without varying the transmit power to adapt to the existing channel conditions, in order to meet certain predetermined minimum Euclidean distance requirement in the equivalent constellation at the destination. The optimal rotation scheme is described for the case when both the users use symmetric M-PSK constellations at the input, where M = 2(gimel), gimel being a positive integer. The strategy is illustrated by considering the example where both the users use QPSK signal sets at the input. The case when the users use PSK constellations of different sizes is also considered. It is shown that the proposed scheme has considerable better error performance compared to the conventional non-adaptive scheme, at the cost of a feedback overhead of just log log(2) (M-2/8 - M/4 + 2)] + 1 bits, for the M-PSK case.

The current study describes the evolution of microstructure and texture in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr-based 7010 aluminum alloy during different modes of hot cross-rolling. Processing of materials involves three different types of cross-rolling. The development of texture in the one-step cross-rolled specimen can be described by a typical beta-fiber having the maximum intensity near Copper (Cu) component. However, for the multi-step cross-rolled specimens, the as-rolled texture is mainly characterized by a strong rotated-Brass (Bs) component and a very weak rotated-cube component. Subsequent heat treatment leads to sharpening of the major texture component (i.e., rotated-Bs). Furthermore, the main texture components in all the specimens appear to be significantly rotated in a complex manner away from their ideal positions because of non-symmetric deformations in the two rolling directions. Detailed microstructural study indicates that dynamic recovery is the dominant restoration mechanism operating during the hot rolling. During subsequent heat treatment, static recovery dominates, while a combination of particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) and strain-induced grain boundary migration (SIBM) causes partial recrystallization of the grain structure. The aforementioned restoration mechanisms play an important role in the development of texture components. The textural development in the current study could be attributed to the combined effects of (a) cross-rolling and inter-pass annealing that reduce the intensity of Cu component after each successive pass, (b) recrystallization resistance of Bs-oriented grains, (c) stability of Bs texture under cross-rolling, and (d) Zener pinning by Al3Zr dispersoids.

The flow produced by a rigid symmetric NACA0015 airfoil purely pitching at a fixed location in quiescent fluid (the limiting case of infinite Strouhal number) is studied using visualizations and particle image velocimetry. A weak jet is generated whose inclination changes continually with time. This meandering is observed to be random and independent of the initial conditions, over a wide range of pitching parameters. The scattering of carriers by charged dislocations in semiconductors is studied within the framework of the linearized Boltzmann transport theory with an emphasis on examining consequences of the extreme anisotropy of the cylindrically symmetric scattering potential. A new closed-form approximate expression for the carrier mobility valid for all temperatures is proposed. The ratios of quantum and transport scattering times are evaluated after averaging over the anisotropy in the relaxation time. The value of the Hall scattering factor computed for charged dislocation scattering indicates that there may be a factor of two error in the experimental mobility estimates using the Hall data. An expression for the resistivity tensor when the dislocations are tilted with respect to the plane of transport is derived. Finally, an expression for the isotropic relaxation time is derived when the dislocations are located within the sample with a uniform angular distribution.

We determine the nature of coupled phonons in mixed crystal of Cs-0.9(NH4)(0.1)H2AsO4 using inelastic light scattering studies in the temperature range of 5 K to 300 K covering a spectral range of 60-1100 cm(-1). The phase transition in this system are marked by the splitting of phonon modes, appearance of new modes and anomalies in the frequency as well as linewidth of the phonon modes near transition temperature. In particular, we observed the splitting of symmetric (v(1)) and antisymmetric (v(3)) stretching vibrations associated with AsO4 tetrahedra below transition temperature (T-c(*) similar to 110 K) attributed to the lowering of site symmetry of AsO4 in orthorhombic phase below transition temperature. In addition, the step-up (hardening) and step-down (softening) of the AsO4 bending vibrations (v(4) (S9, S11) and v(2) (S6)) below transition temperature signals the rapid development of long range ferroelectric order and proton ordering. The lowest frequency phonon (S1) mode observed at similar to 92 cm(-1) shows anomalous blue shift (similar to 12 %) from 300 K to 5 K with no sharp transition near T-c(*) unlike other observed phonon modes signaling its potential coupling with the proton tunneling mode. This paper reports on the mass transport behavior of infinitely extended, continuous, and very thin metallic films under the influence of electric current. Application of direct current of high densities (> 10(8) A/m(2)) results in visible melting of thin film at only one of the electrodes, and the melt then flows towards the other electrode in a circularly symmetric fashion forming a microscale ring pattern. For the two tested thin film systems, namely Cr and Al, of thicknesses ranging from 4 to 20 nm, the above directional flow consistently occurred from cathode to anode and anode to cathode, respectively. Furthermore, application of alternating electric current results in flow of the liquid material from both the electrodes. The dependence of critical flow behavior parameters, such as flow direction, flow velocity, and evolution of the ring diameter, are experimentally determined. Analytical models based on the principles of electromigration in liquid-phase materials are developed to explain the experimental observations.

beta-Prism I fold lectins constitute one of the five widely occurring structural classes of plant lectins. Each single domain subunit is made up of three Greek key motifs arranged in a threefold symmetric fashion. The threefold symmetry is not reflected in the sequence except in the case of the lectin from banana, a monocot, which carries two sugar-binding sites instead of the one in other lectins of known three-dimensional structure, all from dicots. This is believed to be a consequence of the different evolutionary paths followed by the lectin in monocots and dicots. The galactose-specific lectins among them have two chains produced by posttranslational proteolysis and contain three aromatic residues at the binding site. The extended binding sites of galactose- and mannose-specific lectins have been thoroughly characterized. Ligand binding at the sites involves both conformational selection and induced fit. Molecular plasticity of some of the lectins in the family has been characterized. The plasticity appears to be such as to promote variability in quaternary association which could be dimeric, tetrameric, or octameric. Structural and evolutionary reasons for the variability have been explored, and the relation of oligomerization to ligand binding and conformational selection investigated.

An analysis of the energy budget for the general case of a body translating in a stationary fluid under the action of an external force is used to define a power loss coefficient. This universal definition of power loss coefficient gives a measure of the energy lost in the wake of the translating body and, in general, is applicable to a variety of flow configurations including active drag reduction, self-propulsion and thrust generation. The utility of the power loss coefficient is demonstrated on a model bluff body flow problem concerning a two-dimensional elliptical cylinder in a uniform cross-flow. The upper and lower boundaries of the elliptic cylinder undergo continuous motion due to a prescribed reflectionally symmetric constant tangential surface velocity. It is shown that a decrease in drag resulting from an increase in the strength of tangential surface velocity leads to an initial reduction and eventual rise in the power loss coefficient. A maximum in energetic efficiency is attained for a drag reducing tangential surface velocity which minimizes the power loss coefficient. The effect of the tangential surface velocity on drag reduction and self-propulsion of both bluff and streamlined bodies is explored through a variation in the thickness ratio (ratio of the minor and major axes) of the elliptical cylinders.

We present a comprehensive study of two of the most experimentally relevant extensions of Kitaev's spinless model of a one-dimensional p-wave superconductor: those involving (i) longer-range hopping and superconductivity and (ii) inhomogeneous potentials. We commence with a pedagogical review of the spinless model and, as a means of characterizing topological phases exhibited by the systems studied here, we introduce bulk topological invariants as well as those derived from an explicit consideration of boundary modes. In time-reversal symmetric systems, we find that the longer range hopping leads to topological phases characterized by multiple Majorana modes. In particular, we investigate a spin model that respects a duality and maps to a fermionic model with multiple Majorana modes; we highlight the connection between these topological phases and the broken symmetry phases in the original spin model. In the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking terms, we show that the topological phase diagram is characterized by an extended gapless regime. For the case of inhomogeneous potentials, we explore phase diagrams of periodic, quasiperiodic, and disordered systems. We present a detailed mapping between normal state localization properties of such systems and the topological phases of the corresponding superconducting systems. This powerful tool allows us to leverage the analyses of Hofstadter's butterfly and the vast literature on Anderson localization to the question of Majorana modes in superconducting quasiperiodic and disordered systems, respectively. We briefly touch upon the synergistic effects that can be expected in cases where long-range hopping and disorder are both present.
