The influence of bacterial activity on phosphorite formation in the Miocene Monterey Formation, California

Authigenic phosphorites from the Miocene Monterey Formation (California) including an autochthonous phosphatic laminite were analyzed for molecular biomarkers, element content, and sulfur isotopic composition of associated pyrite and sulfate to evaluate the role of bacterial activity in the precipitation of phosphate minerals. The phosphorites formed in a depositional environment typified by upwelling with dynamic bottom currents and hardground formation. Pyrite enclosed in the phosphorites shows delta S-34 values as low as -36.5 parts per thousand VCDT, which is consistent with bacterial sulfate reduction. In a three-step extraction phosphorite dissolution extraction procedure, molecular fossils of sulfate-reducing bacteria (di-O-alkyl glycerol ethers and short-chain branched fatty acids i- and ai-C-15:0, i- and ai-C-17:0, and 10MeC(16:0)) were preferentially released from the mineral lattice. This suggests that the molecular fossils were tightly bound to carbonate fluorapatite, indicating that sulfate-reducing bacteria were involved in mineral formation. A close association of sulfate-reducing bacteria with large sulfide-oxidizing bacteria, which was previously suggested to favor carbonate fluorapatite precipitation, could neither be confirmed nor excluded for the Miocene Monterey Formation phosphorites. Climate and vegetation history of western Portugal inferred from Albian near-shore deposits (Gale Formation, Lusitanian Basin)

The late Early Cretaceous greenhouse climate has been studied intensively based on proxy data derived essentially from open marine archives. In contrast, information on continental climatic conditions and on the accompanying response of vegetation is relatively scarce, most notably owing to the stratigraphic uncertainties associated with many Lower Cretaceous terrestrial deposits. Here, we present a palynological record from Albian near-shore deposits of the Lusitanian Basin of W Portugal, which have been independently dated using Sr-isotope signals derived from low-Mg oyster shell calcite. Sr-87/Sr-86 values fluctuate between 0.707373 +/- 0.00002 and 0.707456 +/- 0.00003; absolute values and the overall stratigraphic trend match well with the global open marine seawater signature during Albian times. Based on the new Sr-isotope data, existing biostratigraphic assignments of the succession are corroborated and partly revised. Spore-pollen data provide information on the vegetation community structure and are flanked by sedimentological and clay mineralogical data used to infer the overall climatic conditions prevailing on the adjacent continent. Variations in the distribution of climate-sensitive pollen and spores indicate distinct changes in moisture availability across the studied succession with a pronounced increase in hygrophilous spores in late Early Albian times. Comparison with time-equivalent palynofloras from the Algarve Basin of southern Portugal shows pronounced differences in the xerophyte/hygrophyte ratio, interpreted to reflect the effect of a broad arid climate belt covering southern and southeastern Iberia during Early Albian times.

Carrières militantes partisanes en contexte autoritaire

La désaffection des citoyens à l'égard des partis politiques en contexte autoritaire semble se prolonger au niveau de la recherche. Pourtant, l'observation du phénomène partisan dans de tels contextes soulève plusieurs énigmes. A partir du cas du Maroc, un des rares pays de la région qui connaît depuis son indépendance un pluralisme partisan limité mais néanmoins complexe, nous nous sommes posés trois questions en particulier : 1) Si les partis politiques suscitent tant de méfiance en contexte autoritaire, qu'est-ce qui caractérise ceux qui s'engagent en leur sein ? 2) Comment en vient-on à s'y engager ? 3) Selon quels processus individuels, organisationnels, collectifs les carrières militantes partisanes se transforment-elles dans un régime autoritaire ? Pour saisir, d'une part, les caractéristiques et les lignes de partage qui structurent l'espace partisan marocain en termes de valeurs, de sociographie, de socialisations, de bassins de recrutement, d'autre part, les intrications entre trajectoires individuelles, organisationnelles et collectives, nous avons recouru en parallèle à des méthodes ethnographiques et à la constitution d'une base de données sur 4127 congressistes nationaux de dix organisations politiques marocaines, sondées entre 2008 et 2012. La sélection des organisations politiques a reposé sur des critères historiques et idéologiques, sur des dynamiques de crise, de fragmentation ou d'unification, tout en étant contrainte par les aléas du calendrier de l'organisation des congrès nationaux et des événements de 2011. L'échantillon comporte des partis « administratifs », des partis de gouvernement, d'opposition parlementaire, d'opposition non parlementaire ; avec une diversité d'orientations : nationaliste, berbériste, islamiste, de gauche gouvernementale, de gauche radicale, d'extrême-gauche. En outre, pour interroger les spécificités du fait partisan au regard de ses marges, nous avons intégré dans notre échantillon une organisation altermondialiste promouvant « la politique autrement » et observé les mobilisations de 2011 et de 2012. Deep learning via semi-supervised embedding

We show how nonlinear embedding algorithms popular for use with shallow semi-supervised learning techniques such as kernel methods can be applied to deep multilayer architectures, either as a regularizer at the output layer, or on each layer of the architecture. This provides a simple alternative to existing approaches to deep learning whilst yielding competitive error rates compared to those methods, and existing shallow semi-supervised techniques.

Astrocyte-neuron lactate transport is required for long-term memory formation.

We report that, in the rat hippocampus, learning leads to a significant increase in extracellular lactate levels that derive from glycogen, an energy reserve selectively localized in astrocytes. Astrocytic glycogen breakdown and lactate release are essential for long-term but not short-term memory formation, and for the maintenance of long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic strength elicited in vivo. Disrupting the expression of the astrocytic lactate transporters monocarboxylate transporter 4 (MCT4) or MCT1 causes amnesia, which, like LTP impairment, is rescued by L-lactate but not equicaloric glucose. Disrupting the expression of the neuronal lactate transporter MCT2 also leads to amnesia that is unaffected by either L-lactate or glucose, suggesting that lactate import into neurons is necessary for long-term memory. Glycogenolysis and astrocytic lactate transporters are also critical for the induction of molecular changes required for memory formation, including the induction of phospho-CREB, Arc, and phospho-cofilin. We conclude that astrocyte-neuron lactate transport is required for long-term memory formation.

Avaliação de um modelo físico de produção de bovinos no semi-árido integrando caatinga, capim-buffel e leucena.: I. fase de cria

O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar um modelo físico do sistema de cria de bovinos para as áreas mais secas do Semi-Árido brasileiro, associando a pastagem natural com pastos cultivados tolerantes à seca. A caatinga foi pastejada no período verde, e o capim buffel no restante do ano. A suplementação com leucena ocorreu no período seco, sob pastejo direto e feno no cocho. Parâmetros de desempenho, monitorados de novembro de 1991 a outubro de 1995, mostraram uma taxa média de parição da ordem de 72,8% ao ano e taxas de mortalidade praticamente nulas. O peso vivo médio dos bezerros aos 205 dias de idade foi de 153,4 kg e a produ- ção de bezerros desmamados foi de 109,5 kg/matriz exposta/ano e de 25,5 kg/hectare/ano. Os resultados são considerados bastante expressivos, considerando-se que mais da metade da área era ocupada com pastagens nativas de caatinga e que a oferta de leucena foi limitada pela ocorrência de uma forte estiagem.

Uses of also in oral semi-informal German

In recent grammars and dictionaries also (`therefore, so, well¿) continues to be preferably presented as an adverb with a conclusive-consecutive connective function that essentially corresponds to its use in formal written German. Its function as a modal particle is documented, however, since the beginnings of what is known as Partikelforschung, though not all its uses have been systematically investigated contrasting oral and written German, either in mode or concept. In this article we analyse the uses of also in semi-informal oral interactions on the basis of empirical data (from a subsample of the VARCOM corpus). Specifically, we will analyse the presence and frequency of also at the beginning of a sentence or sequence, the functions it serves as a logical-semantic connector or discourse and interaction marker and the interrelations between these functions, in order to contrast these results with the description of also provided by current reference works.

SUPLEMENTAÇÃO ALIMENTAR DE CABRAS ANGLO-NUBIANAS NA ÉPOCA CHUVOSA, NA REGIÃO SEMI-ÁRIDA DO NORDESTE BRASILEIRO

Foi realizado um experimento para avaliar a influência da suplementação alimentar na produção de leite de cabras da raça Anglo-nubiana, durante a época chuvosa, na região semi-árida do Nordeste brasileiro. Vinte e quatro cabras foram mantidas em pastagem nativa rebaixada, distribuídas ao acaso, por tipo de parto e produção de leite, em três níveis de suplementação: N0 - sem suplementação, N1 -150 g de concentrado/animal/dia e N2 - 300 g de concentrado/animal/dia. Não houve diferença significativa (p>0,05) entre os níveis de suplementação. A produção de leite foi descrita por uma regressão múltipla em função do período de lactação em semana. A interação semana x níveis de suplementação foi significativa (p<0,01). Os resultados revelam que a suplementação com concentrado, na dose de 300 g/animal/dia, foi a melhor opção para se produzir leite com cabras Anglo-nubianas, durante a época chuvosa.

Efeito da calagem e inoculação de sabiá em solo da mata úmida e do semi-árido de Pernambuco

Realizou-se um experimento, usando solo álico da Zona da Mata e do Semi-Árido do Estado de Pernambuco, com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da calagem (0, 3 e 6 t ha-1) e da inoculação das estirpes de rizóbio: NFB 539, NFB 577 e NFB 578, previamente selecionadas para sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia) em meio de cultura ácido. Adicionaram-se tratamentos sem inoculação, sem e com adição de N mineral (100 kg ha-1), para fins comparativos. O experimento seguiu o esquema fatorial 2x3x5, no delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. As plantas foram colhidas 110 dias após a emergência (DAE). A inoculação de rizóbio, em todos os níveis de calagem, mostrou efeito significativo nos parâmetros avaliados. No nível de 3 t ha-1 não houve efeito da calagem, porém a adição de 6 t ha-1 de calcário reduziu o peso de matéria seca, o N total na parte aérea, a nodulação e a atividade da nitrogenase. O baixo pH e Al3+ do solo não prejudicou a fixação do N2, e o crescimento das plantas que receberam o inóculo. Portanto, torna-se desnecessária a calagem no cultivo de sabiá em solos ácidos, quando usadas estirpes selecionadas visando à resistência a acidez.

Molecular genetic framework for protophloem formation.

The phloem performs essential systemic functions in tracheophytes, yet little is known about its molecular genetic specification. Here we show that application of the peptide ligand CLAVATA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION 45 (CLE45) specifically inhibits specification of protophloem in Arabidopsis roots by locking the sieve element precursor cell in its preceding developmental state. CLE45 treatment, as well as viable transgenic expression of a weak CLE45(G6T) variant, interferes not only with commitment to sieve element fate but also with the formative sieve element precursor cell division that creates protophloem and metaphloem cell files. However, the absence of this division appears to be a secondary effect of discontinuous sieve element files and subsequent systemically reduced auxin signaling in the root meristem. In the absence of the formative sieve element precursor cell division, metaphloem identity is seemingly adopted by the normally procambial cell file instead, pointing to possibly independent positional cues for metaphloem formation. The protophloem formation and differentiation defects in brevis radix (brx) and octopus (ops) mutants are similar to those observed in transgenic seedlings with increased CLE45 activity and can be rescued by loss of function of a putative CLE45 receptor, BARELY ANY MERISTEM 3 (BAM3). Conversely, a dominant gain-of-function ops allele or mild OPS dosage increase suppresses brx defects and confers CLE45 resistance. Thus, our data suggest that delicate quantitative interplay between the opposing activities of BAM3-mediated CLE45 signals and OPS-dependent signals determines cellular commitment to protophloem sieve element fate, with OPS acting as a positive, quantitative master regulator of phloem fate.
