This article compares the efficiency of induced polarization (IP) and resistivity in characterizing a contamination plume due to landfill leakage in a typical tropical environment. The resistivity survey revealed denser electrical current flow that induced lower resistivity values due to the high ionic content. The increased ionic concentration diminished the distance of the ionic charges close to the membrane, causing a decrease in the IP phenomena. In addition, the self-potential (SP) method was used to characterize the preferential flow direction of the area. The SP method proved to be effective at determining the flow direction; it is also fast and economical. In this study, the resistivity results were better correlated with the presence of contamination (lower resistivity) than the IP (lower chargeability) data.

Temperature dependence and uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy properties of the chemically synthesized 4 nm L1(0)-Fe55Pt45 nanoparticle assembly by a modified polyol route are reported. As-prepared nanoparticles are superparamagnetic presenting fcc structure, and annealing at 550 degrees C converts the assembly into ferromagnetic nanocrystals with large coercivity (H-C>1 T) in an L1(0) phase. Magnetic measurements showed an increasing in the ferromagnetically ordered fraction of the nanoparticles with the annealing temperature increases, and the remanence ratio, S=M-R/M-S congruent to 0.76, suggests an (111) textured film. A monotonic increase of the blocking temperature T-B, the uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K-U, and the coercivity H-C with increasing annealing temperature was observed. Magnetic parameters indicate an enhancement in the magnetic properties due to the improved Fe55Pt45 phase stabilizing, and the room-temperature stability parameter of 67, which indicates that the magnetization should be stable for more than ten years, makes this material suitable for ultrahigh-density magnetic recording application.(c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Hydrated bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes obtained from cultures of Acetobacter xylinum were used in the preparation of silver nanoparticles containing cellulose membranes. In situ preparation of Ag nanoparticles was achieved from the hydrolytic decomposition of silver triethanolamine (TEA) complexes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns both lead to the observation of spherical metallic silver particles with mean diameter of 8 nm well adsorbed onto the BC fibriles.

A simple model of electron transfer is adapted to explain fluorescence quenching in self-assembled films of poly( p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) alternating with poly(thiophene acetic acid) (PTAA). Quenching is caused by a photo-induced electron transfer between the excited PPV (donor, D) and the PTAA (acceptor, A). The electron-transfer process can be mediated by insertion of electronically inert spacing bilayers between the D and A layers, As the number of bilayers is increased, the fluorescence is gradually recovered which is explained theoretically by assuming that the electron-transfer rate can be described as k = Z exp(- beta r) where r is the distance between D and A. Glycogenin acts in the initiation step of glycogen biosynthesis by catalyzing a self-glucosylation reaction. In a previous work [de Paula et al., Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 435 (2005) 112-124], we described the isolation of the cDNA gnn, which encodes the protein glycogenin (GNN) in Neurospora crassa. This work presents a set of biochemical and functional studies confirming the GNN role in glycogen biosynthesis. Kinetic experiments showed a very low GNN K-m (4.41 mu M) for the substrate UDP-glucose. Recombinant GNN was produced in Escherichia coli and analysis by mass spectroscopy identified a peptide containing an oligosaccharide chain attached to Tyr196 residue. Site-directed mutagenesis and functional complementation of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutant strain confirmed the participation of this residue in the GNN self-glucosylation and indicated the Tyr198 residue as an additional, although less active, glucosylation site. The physical interaction between GNN and glycogen synthase (GSN) was analyzed by the two-hybrid assay. While the entire GSN was required for full interaction, the C-terminus in GNN was more important. Furthermore, mutation in the GNN glucosylation sites did not impair the interaction with GSN.
