This work reports on the excited-state absorption spectrum of oxidized Cytochrome c (Fe(3+)) dissolved in water, measured with the Z-scan technique with femtosecond laser pulses. The excited-state absorption cross-sections between 460 and 560 nm were determined with the aid of a three-energy-level model. Reverse saturable absorption was observed below 520 nm, while a saturable absorption process occurs in the Q-band, located around 530 nm. Above 560 nm, a competition between saturable absorption and two-photon absorption was inferred. These results show that Cytochrome c presents distinct nonlinear behaviors, which may be useful to study electron transfer chemistry in proteins by one- and two-photon absorption. In addition, owing to these nonlinear optical features, this molecule may be employed in applications involving photodynamics therapy and saturable absorbers. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Polyaniline is a conducting polymer with appealing electrical and optical properties, arising from the -conjugation along the polymer backbone. The understanding of its excited state absorption is of prime importance for designing and fabricating optical devices. Here, we report on the study of the excited state absorption of doped and undoped PANI by using femtosecond pulses in the spectral range from 450nm up to 850nm. For undoped PANI, we observed saturation of absorption as well as reverse saturable absorption, depending on the excitation wavelength. For doped PANI, however, only saturable absorption was observed.

Two-photon polymerization is a powerful tool for fabricating three-dimensional micro/nano structures for applications ranging from nanophotonics to biology. To tailor such structure for specific purposes it is often important to dope them. In this paper we report on the fabrication of structures, with nanometric surface features (resolution of approximately 700 nm), using two-photon polymerization of an acrylic resin doped with the biocompatible polymer chitosan using a guest-host scheme. The fluorescence background in the Raman spectrum indicates the presence of chitosan throughout the structure. Mechanical characterization reveals that chitosan does not affect the mechanical properties of the host acrylic resin and, consequently, the structures exhibit excellent integrity. The approach presented in this work can be used in the fabrication of micro- and nanostructures containing biopolymers for biomedical applications.

This work investigates the two-photon absorption spectrum of perylene tetracarboxylic derivatives using the white-light continuum Z-scan technique. Perylene derivatives present relatively high two-photon absorption cross-section, which makes them attractive for applications in photonics. Because of the spectral resolution of the white-light continuum Z-scan, we were able to observe a well defined structure in the two-photon absorption spectrum, composed by two distinct peaks. These peaks, as well as the resonant enhancement of the nonlinearity, were modeled using the sum-over-states approach considering a four-level energy diagram with two final two-photon states. The existence of such states was confirmed using the response function formalism within the DFT framework. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, we investigate the control of the two-photon absorption process of a series of organic compounds via spectral phase modulation of the excitation pulse. We analyzed the effect of the pulse central wavelength on the control of the two-photon absorption process for each compound. Depending on the molecules` two-photon absorption position relative to the excitation pulse wavelength, different levels of coherent control were observed. By simulating the two-photon transition probability in molecular systems, taking into account the band structure and its positions, we could explain the experimental results trends. We observed that the intrapulse coherent interference plays an important role in the nonlinear process control besides just the pulse intensity modulation.

This work demonstrates that the detuning of the fs-laser spectrum from the two-photon absorption band of organic materials can be used to reach further control of the two-photon absorption by pulse spectral phase manipulation. We investigate the coherent control of the two-photon absorption in imidazole-thiophene core compounds presenting distinct two-photon absorption spectra. The coherent control, performed using pulse phase shaping and genetic algorithm, exhibited different growth rates for each sample. Such distinct trends were explained by calculating the two-photon absorption probability considering the intrapulse interference mechanism, taking into account the two-photon absorption spectrum of the samples. Our results indicate that tuning the relative position between the nonlinear absorption and the pulse spectrum can be used as a novel strategy to optimize the two-photon absorption in broadband molecular systems. The molecular architecture of azopolymers may be controlled via chemical synthesis and with selection of a suitable film-forming method, which is important for improving their properties for practical uses. Here we address the main challenge of combining the photoinduced birefringence features of azopolymers with the higher thermal and mechanical stabilities of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) to synthesize diblock- and triblock-copolymers of an azomonomer and the monomer methyl methacrylate. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films made with the copolymers mixed with cadmium stearate displayed essentially the same optically induced birefringence characteristics, in terms of maximum and residual birefringence and time for writing, as the mixed LB films with the homopolymer poly[4-(N-ethyl-N-(2-methacryloxyethyl))amino-2`-chloro-4`-nitroazobenzene] (HPDR13), also synthesized via ATRP. In fact, the controlled architecture of HPDR13 chains led to Langmuir films that could be more closely packed and reach higher collapse pressures than the corresponding films obtained with HPDR13-conv synthesized via conventional radicalar polymerization. This allowed LB films to be fabricated from neat HPDR13, which was not possible with HPDR13-conv. The enhanced organization in the LB films produced with controlled azopolymer chains, however, led to a smaller free volume available for isomerization of the azochromophores, thus yielding a lower photoinduced birefringence than in the HPDR13-conv films. The combination of ATRP synthesis and LB technology is then promising to obtain optical storage in films with improved thermal and mechanical processabilities, though a further degree of control must be sought to exploit film organization while maintaining the necessary free volume in the films. In the work reported here we were able to control the photobleaching of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2`-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV), excited by two-photon absorption, using femtosecond pulse shaping. By applying a cosine-like spectral phase mask, we observe a reduction of three times in the photobleaching rate, while the fluorescence intensity decreases by 20%, in comparison to the values obtained with a Fourier-transform-limited pulse. These results demonstrate an interesting trade-off between photobleaching rate and nonlinear fluorescence intensity. The possible mechanism behind this process is discussed in terms of the pulse spectral profile and the absorbance band of MEH-PPV. (C) 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

We carried out experiments of induced birefringence via two-photon absorption in spin-coated films of the conjugated polymer poly[2-[ethyl-[4-(4-nitro-phenylazo)-phenyl] -amino]-ethane (3-thienyl)ethanoate], PAzT, at 680 and 775 nm. This process allows recording in the bulk because of the spatial confinement of the bireffingence provided by the two-photon absorption. The induced birefringence is associated with molecular reorientation caused by the two-photon induced isomerization of the azochromophores attached to the polymer backbone. In addition, the two-photon absorption spectrum of PAzT was measured to help selecting the excitation wavelength for two-photon absorption induced birefringence. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Two-photon polymerization has emerged as a powerful tool to design complex three-dimensional microstructures for applications ranging from biology to nanophotonics. To broaden the application spectrum of such microstructures, different materials have been incorporated to the polymers, aiming at specific applications. In this paper we report the fabrication of microstructures containing rhodamine 610, which display strong fluorescence upon one- and two-photon excitation. The latter increases light-penetration depth and spatial selectivity of luminescence. We also demonstrate that by using silica submicrometric wires we were able to select individual microstructures to be excited, which could be explored for designing microstructure-based optical circuits.

In this paper we show the fabrication of hydrophobic polymeric surfaces through laser microstructuring. By using 70-ps pulses from a Q-switched and mode-locked Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm, we were able to produce grooves with different width and separation, resulting in square-shaped pillar patterns. We investigate the dependence of the morphology on the surface static contact angle for water, showing that it is in agreement with the Cassie-Baxter model. We demonstrate the fabrication of a superhydrophobic polymeric surface, presenting a water contact angle of 157 degrees. The surface structuring method presented here seems to be an interesting option to control the wetting properties of polymeric surfaces. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two-photon absorption spectra of a triarylamine compounds dissolved in toluene were measured using the well-known Z-scan technique, employing 120-fs laser pulse-width. According to the results, an extra band located at around 900 nm was observed only for triarylamine with azoaromatic units. On the other hand, a shift in the two-photon absorption band for triarylamine, with and without azoaromatic units, is observed when different electron donor/acceptors groups are changed. The fitting of the spectra, using sum-over-states model, allowed us to obtain the spectroscopic parameters of each molecule, which appears to be in reasonable agreement with molecules presenting similar structural moieties. Excited state absorption and excited state dynamics of indocyanine-green (ICG) dissolved in dymethyl sulfoxide were measured using white-light continuum Z-scan (WLCZScan) and white-light continuum pump-probe (WLCPP) techniques. The excited state absorption spectrum, obtained through Z-scan measurements, revealed saturable absorption (SA) for wavelengths longer than 630 nm, while reverse saturable absorption (RSA) appeared, as indicated by a band at approximately 570 nm. Both processes were modeled by a three-energy-level diagram, from which the excited state cross-section values were determined. SA and RSA were also observed in pump-probe experiments, with a recovery time in the hundreds of picoseconds time scale due to the long lifetime of the first excited state of ICG. Such results contribute to the understanding of ICG optical properties, allowing application in photonics and medicine. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A lectin and a galactoxyloglucan were characterized from Mucuna sloanei seed cotyledons. The galactoxyloglucan, isolated by water extraction and ethanol precipitation, had Glc:Xyl:Gal proportions in a molar ratio of 1.8:1.7:1.0 and a molar mass (M(w)) of 1.6 x 10(6) g mol(-1). The lectin (sloanin), isolated from the same seed by affinity chromatography on cross-linked Adenanthera pavonina galactomannan, gave two protein bands by SDS-PAGE (36 and 34 kDa) and one peak by gel filtration (63.6 kDa). Its N-terminal sequence indicated similar to 69% identity with soybean agglutinin to leguminous lectins. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra established that sloanin predominantly contains beta-sheet structures. Sloanin has similar to 5.5% carbohydrate and displayed hemagglutinating activity against rabbit and enzyme treated human erythrocytes, inhibited only by D-Gal containing sugars. The interaction between sloanin and storage cell-wall galactoxyloglucan was tested by affinity chromatography and fluorescence spectroscopy. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
