An experimental study on loading rate effect on acoustic emission based b-values related to reinforced concrete fracture

This article reports on analysis of fracture processes in reinforced concrete (RC) beams with acoustic emission (AE) technique. An emphasis was given to study the effect of loading rate on variation in AE based b-values with the development of cracks in RC structures. RC beams of length 3.2 m were tested under load control at a rate of 4 kN/s, 5 kN/s and 6 kN/s and the b-value analysis available in seismology was used to study the fracture process in RC structures. Moreover, the b-value is related to the strain in steel to assess the damage state. It is observed that when the loading rate is higher, quick cracking development lead to rapid fluctuations and drops in the b-values. Also it is observed that concrete behaves relatively more brittle at higher loading rates (or at higher strain rates). The average b-values are lower as a few but larger amplitudes of AE events occur in contrast to more number of low amplitude AE events occur at low loading rates (or at low strain rates). Dissociation Constants of Weak Acids from ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Using Metadynamics: Influence of the Inductive Effect and Hydrogen Bonding on pK(a) Values

The theoretical estimation of the dissociation constant, or pK(a), of weak acids continues to be a challenging field. Here, we show that ab initio CarParrinello molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with metadynamics calculations of the free-energy profile of the dissociation reaction provide reasonable estimates of the pK(a) value. Water molecules, sufficient to complete the three hydration shells surrounding the acid molecule, were included explicitly in the computation procedure. The free-energy profiles exhibit two distinct minima corresponding to the dissociated and neutral states of the acid, and the difference in their values provides the estimate for pK(a). We show for a series of organic acids that CPMD simulations in conjunction with metadynamics can provide reasonable estimates of pK(a) values. The acids investigated were aliphatic carboxylic acids, chlorine-substituted carboxylic acids, cis- and trans-butenedioic acid, and the isomers of hydroxybenzoic acid. These systems were chosen to highlight that the procedure could correctly account for the influence of the inductive effect as well as hydrogen bonding on pK(a) values of weak organic acids. In both situations, the CPMD metadynamics procedure faithfully reproduces the experimentally observed trend and the magnitudes of the pK(a) values.

Optimal values of bipartite entanglement in a tripartite system

For a general tripartite system in some pure state, an observer possessing any two parts will see them in a mixed state. By the consequence of Hughston-Jozsa-Wootters theorem, each basis set of local measurement on the third part will correspond to a particular decomposition of the bipartite mixed state into a weighted sum of pure states. It is possible to associate an average bipartite entanglement ((S) over bar) with each of these decompositions. The maximum value of (S) over bar is called the entanglement of assistance (E-A) while the minimum value is called the entanglement of formation (E-F). An appropriate choice of the basis set of local measurement will correspond to an optimal value of (S) over bar; we find here a generic optimality condition for the choice of the basis set. Estimating successive pK(a) values of polyprotic acids from ab initio molecular dynamics using metadynamics: the dissociation of phthalic acid and its isomers

Estimation of the dissociation constant, or pK(a), of weak acids continues to be a central goal in theoretical chemistry. Here we show that ab initio Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with metadynamics calculations of the free energy profile of the dissociation reaction can provide reasonable estimates of the successive pK(a) values of polyprotic acids. We use the distance-dependent coordination number of the protons bound to the hydroxyl oxygen of the carboxylic group as the collective variable to explore the free energy profile of the dissociation process. Water molecules, sufficient to complete three hydration shells surrounding the acid molecule, were included explicitly in the computation procedure. Two distinct minima corresponding to the dissociated and un-dissociated states of the acid are observed and the difference in their free energy values provides the estimate for pK(a), the acid dissociation constant. We show that the method predicts the pK(a) value of benzoic acid in good agreement with experiment and then show using phthalic acid (benzene dicarboxylic acid) as a test system that both the first and second pK(a) values as well, as the subtle difference in their values for different isomers can be predicted in reasonable agreement with experimental data.

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Amino Acids in Aqueous Solutions: Estimating pK(a) Values from Metadynamics Sampling

Changes in the protonation and deprotonation of amino acid residues in proteins play a key role in many biological processes and pathways. Here, we report calculations of the free-energy profile for the protonation deprotonation reaction of the 20 canonical alpha amino acids in aqueous solutions using ab initio Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations coupled with metad-ynamics sampling. We show here that the calculated change in free energy of the dissociation reaction provides estimates of the multiple pK(a) values of the amino acids that are in good agreement with experiment. We use the bond-length-dependent number of the protons coordinated to the hydroxyl oxygen of the carboxylic and the amine groups as the collective variables to explore the free-energy profiles of the Bronsted acid-base chemistry of amino acids in aqueous solutions. We ensure that the amino acid undergoing dissociation is solvated by at least three hydrations shells with all water molecules included in the simulations. The method works equally well for amino acids with neutral, acidic and basic side chains and provides estimates of the multiple pK(a) values with a mean relative error, with respect to experimental results, of 0.2 pK(a) units.

Humildad, respeto y servicio ante la dignidad personal del embrión humano

Resumen: Ciertamente, ningún dato biológico es por sí mismo suficiente para describir el milagro de la vida. Sin embargo, cuando la ciencia es entendida como un servicio a la humanidad, los científicos son capaces de brindarnos los conocimientos necesarios y suficientes para percibir una presencia personal desde el primer instante de la vida de cada embrión humano.

La paz como un signo de estos tiempos : la Iglesia latinoamericana ante la violencia y el aporte de las mujeres a la paz

Resumen: Esta ponencia forma parte del primer Panel Inaugural del II Congreso de Teólogas latinoamericanas y alemanas “Espacios de Paz”, realizado del 28 al 31 de marzo de 2016. Se aborda el tema de la paz como signo de estos tiempos desde tres claves: el contexto latinoamericano, la centralidad de la violencia en los estudios sobre la paz y su relación con las mujeres como constructoras de paz y víctimas de violencia. La reflexión se organiza en dos partes: primero, se analiza el discernimiento teológicopastoral sobre la paz realizado por la Conferencia de Medellín, en un contexto de subdesarrollo e injusticia caracterizados como violencia institucional y pecado estructural; además, se mencionan en forma breve los desafíos de reconciliación que plantearon los procesos de transición que siguieron a los gobiernos militares y a los conflictos armados internos. En la segunda parte, se enfocan algunos valores y esferas de la paz y la violencia –personal, estructural y cultural–, para considerar el concepto secular y cristiano de “pacificación” (peacebuilding) y los aportes teóricos y prácticos de las mujeres en la construcción de la paz en contextos de violencia.

Satisfacción laboral y síndrome de burnout en docentes de nivel primario

Resumen: El trabajo docente no se reduce al dictado de clases, implica la ejecución de varias actividades como son el cuidado y mantenimiento de la escuela, la atención de los alumnos en su diversidad, la confección de materiales didácticos, la realización y presentación de trámites administrativos, la inserción en los programas de capacitación, y el contacto con los padres, con las autoridades y compañeros de trabajo; lo que implica un duro esfuerzo, una significativa carga psíquica en el trabajo. Cuando la motivación y la satisfacción por educar disminuyen, cuando el compromiso profesional y la vocación de enseñar no son suficientes para garantizar un desempeño satisfactorio y sobrellevar las diferentes situaciones de la labor cotidiana, aumenta la probabilidad de que el docente experimente malestar psicofísico y agotamiento. El propósito de este estudio fue evaluar el estado de satisfacción laboral de los docentes y su impacto en las dimensiones del Síndrome de Burnout. Se trabajó con una muestra de 229 profesores de nivel primario, de las provincias de Entre Ríos y Buenos Aires. Los resultados indicaron un efecto significativo de la satisfacción laboral sobre las diversas manifestaciones del síndrome. Los maestros más satisfechos con su trabajo mostraron puntuaciones más bajas de cansancio emocional y valores más elevados en ladimensión realización personal del Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI).
