New dredge-disposal techniques may serve the dual role of aiding sand by-passing across coastal inlets, and beach nourishment, provided the dredged sediments placed seaward of the surf zone move shoreward into that zone. During the summer of 1976, 26,750 cubic meters of relatively coarse sediment was dredged from New River Inlet, North Carolina, moved down coast by a split-hull barge, and placed in a 215-meter coastal reach between the 2- and 4-meter depth contours. Bathymetric changes on the disposal piles and in the adjacent beach and nearshore area were studied for a 13-week period (August to November 1976) to determine the modification of the surrounding beach and nearshore profile, and the net transport direction of the disposal sediment. The sediment piles initially created a local shoal zone with minimum depths of 0.6 meter. Disposal sediment was coarser (Mn = 0.49 millimeter) than the native sand at the disposal site (Mn = 0.14 millimeter) and coarser than the composite mean grain size of the entire profile (Mn = 0.21 millimeter). Shoaling and breaking waves caused rapid erosion of the pile tops and a gradual coalescing of the piles to form a disposal bar located seaward (= 90 meters) of a naturally occurring surf zone bar. As the disposal bar relief was reduced, the disposal bar-associated breaker zone was restricted to low tide times or periods of high wave conditions.

Experimental studies on phase equilibria in the multi-component system PbO-ZnO-CaO-SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3 in air have been conducted to characterize the phase relations of a complex slag system used in the oxidation smelting of lead and in typical lead blast furnace sinters. The liquidus in two pseudoternary sections ZnO-Fe2O3-(PbO + CaO + SiO2) with the CaO/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.1 and the PbO/(CaO + SiO2) weight ratio of 6.2, and with CaO/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.6 and the PbO/(CaO + SiO2) weight ratio of 4.3, have been constructed.

The product of the gene (ATM) mutated in the human genetic disorder ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a high molecular weight, protein (similar to350 kDa) containing a C-terminal protein kinase domain and a number of other putative domains not yet functionally defined. The majority of ATM gene mutations in A-T patients are truncating, resulting in prematurely terminated products that are highly unstable. Missense mutations within the kinase domain and elsewhere in the molecule alter the stability of the protein and lead to loss of protein kinase activity. Only rarely are patients observed with two missense mutations and this gives rise to a milder disease phenotype. Evidence for a dominant interfering effect on normal ATM kinase activity has been reported in cell lines transfected with missense mutant ATM and in cell lines from some A-T heterozygotes. The dominant negative effect of mutant ATM is manifested by an enhancement of cellular radiosensitivity and may be responsible for the cancer predisposition observed in carriers of ATM missense mutations. In this review, we explore the domain structure of the ATM molecule, sites of interaction with other proteins and the consequences of specific amino acid changes on function. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.
