A method for the direct determination of Pb in wines by simultaneous multi-element atomic absorption spectrometry (SIMAAS) using a transversely heated graphite atomizer, Zeeman-effect background corrector and internal standardization is proposed. Bismuth was used as an internal standard and Pd(NO3)(2) plus Mg(NO3)(2) as chemical modifier,to stabilize both the analyte and the internal standard. The implementation of two pyrolysis steps avoided any build-up of carbonaceous residues on the graphite platform. All diluted samples (1 + 1 v/v) in 0.2% v/v HNO3 and reference solutions (5.0-50 mug l(-1) Ph in 0.2% v/v HNO3) were spiked with 25 mug l(-1) Bi. For a 20 mul aliquot dispensed into the graphite tube, a good correlation (r = 0.9997) was obtained between the ratio of the analyte signal to the internal standard signal and the analyte concentration of the reference solutions. The electrothermal behaviour of Pb and Bi in red, white and rose wines were compared. In addition, absorbance variations due to changes in experimental conditions, such as atomizer temperature, integration time, injected sample volume, radiation beam intensity, graphite tube surface, dilution and sample composition, were minimized by using Bi as internal standard. Relative standard deviations of measurements based on integrated absorbance varied from 0.1 to 3.4% and from 0.5 to 7.3% (n = 12) with and without internal standard correction, respectively. Good recoveries (91-104%) for Pb spikes were obtained. The characteristic mass was 45 pg Pb and the limit of detection based on integrated absorbance was 0.9 mug l(-1) Pb. Internal standardization increased the lifetime of the tube by 25%. Direct determinations of Pb in wines with and without internal standardization approaches were in agreement at the 95% confidence level. The repeatability and the tube lifetime were improved when using Bi as internal standard. The improvement in accuracy using an internal standard was only observed when the analytical results were affected by errors.

A method for the direct determination of Ni in soft drinks by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry using a transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA), Zeeman-effect background corrector, and Co as the internal standard (IS) is proposed. Magnesium nitrate was used to stabilize both Ni and Co. All diluted samples (1+1) in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3 and reference solutions [5.0-50 mu g L-1 Ni in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3] were spiked with 50 mu g L-1 Co. For a 20-mu L sample dispensed into the atomizer, correlations between the ratio of absorbance of Ni to absorbance of Co and the analyte concentration were close to 0.9996. The relative standard deviation of the measurements varied from 0.5 to 3.4% and 1.0 to 7.0% (n=12) with and without IS, respectively. Recoveries within 98-104% for Ni spikes were obtained using IS. The characteristic mass was calculated as 43 pg Ni and the limit of detection was 1.4 mu g L-1. The accuracy of the method was checked for the direct determination of Ni in soft drinks and the results obtained with IS were better than those without IS.

This paper describes the preparation of thin titanium films via sol-gel route and their subsequent chemical modification by anchoring with 2-aminothiazole ligand and Pd(II) ion sorption, aiming to maximize the photocatalytic activity. The material was characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, ultraviolet and visible spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electronic microscopy. The amount of palladium adsorbed on the film's surface, determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, showed a value of 2.69 x 10(16) atoms CM-2. The photocatalytic tests indicated that the functionalization with 2-aminothiazole and the adsorption of palladium (II) were determinants in the semiconductor's enhanced photocatalytic activity. A potentiometric sensor constructed from a mixture of 25% (m/m) spinel-type manganese oxide (lambda-MnO2), 50% (m/m) graphite powder and 25% (m/m) mineral oil is used for the determination of lithium ions in a flow injection analysis system. Experimental parameters, such as pH of the carrier solution, flow rate, injection sample volume, and selectivity for Li+ against other alkali and alkaline-earth ions and the response time of this sensor were investigated. The sensor response to lithium ions was linear in the concentration range 8.6 x 10(-5) - 1.0 x 10(-2) mol L-1 with a slope 78.9 +/- 0.3 mV dec(-1) over a wide pH range 7 - 10 (Tris buffer), without interference of other alkali and alkaline-earth metals. For a flow rate of 5.0 mL min(-1) and a injection sample volume of 408.6 muL, the relative standard deviation for repeated injections of a 5.0 x 10(-4) mol L-1 lithium ions was 0.3%.

A method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni in fuel ethanol by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) using a transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) with longitudinal Zeeman-effect background correction. The thermal behavior of analytes during the pyrolysis and atomization stages using the mixture Pd(NO3)(2) + Mg(NO3)(2) as the chemical modifier was investigated in 0.028 mol L-1 HNO3, 0.14 mol L-1 HNO3, and diluted ethanol (1 + 1, v/v) containing different nitric acid concentrations. With 5 rhog Pd + 3 mug Mg as the modifiers, pyrolysis and atomization temperatures of the heating program of the atomizer were fixed at 1200 C and 2200degreesC respectively. For 20 muL of diluted sample (10 muL ethanol + 10 muL of 0.28 mol L-1 HNO3) dispensed into the graphite tube, analytical curves in the 2.0 - 50 mug L-1 Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni ranges were established. The calculated characteristic masses were - 37 pg Al, 73 pg As, 31 pg Cu, 16 pg Fe, 9 pg Mn, and 44 pg Ni, and the lifetime of the tube was around 2 50 firings. The limits of detection (LOD) based on integrated absorbance were 1.2 mug L-1 Al, 2.5 mug L-1 As. 0.22 mug L-1 Cu, 1.6 L-1 Fe 0.20 mug L-1 Mn 1.1 mug L-1 Ni. The relatively standard deviations (n = 12) were less than or equal to 3%, less than or equal to 6%, less than or equal to 2%, less than or equal to 3.4%, less than or equal to 1.3%, and less than or equal to 2% for Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni, respectively, the recoveries of Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni added to fuel ethanol samples varied from 77% to 112%, 92% to 114%, 104% to 113%, 73% to 116%, 91% to 122% and 93% to 116%, respectively. Accuracy was checked for Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni determination in 20 samples purchased at local gas stations in Araraquara city, Brazil. A paired t-test showed that the results were in agreement at the 95% confidence level with those obtained by single-element GFAAS.

Iridium-, Ru-, and W-coated platforms were prepared by thermal treatment of the transversely heated graphite atomizer and investigated for the simultaneous determination of As, Bi, Pb, Sb, and Se in tap water by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. The maximum pyrolysis temperature for As and Bi increased in a modifier sequence W < Ru < Ir. For Pb, Sb, and Se, this sequence was W < Ru, It. Calculated characteristic masses in the presence of It, Ru, and W were 35, 33, and 35 pg for As; 63, 51, and 52 pg for Bi; 50, 32, and 34 pg for Pb; 40, 35, and 31 pg for Sb; and 39, 39, and 93 pg for Se, respectively. Ruthenium was elected as the optimum modifier.Repeatability of the measurements was typically < 6%. Recoveries of As, Bi, Pb, Sb, and Se added to tap water samples varied from 79 to 109%. Accuracy was also checked by analysis of five certified reference materials (CRMs) from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST1640 - Trace Elements in Natural Water; NIST 1643d Trace Elements in Water) and High Purity Standards (Trace Metals in Drinking Water Standards, lots #812708, #591107, and #710710). A paired t-test showed that the results for the CRMs were in agreement at the 95% confidence level with the certified values. The graphite tube lifetime was about 650 firings. multi-element determination is particularly challenging due to the necessity of carefully optimizing compromise conditions.Based on the considerations listed above, the aim of this paper was to evaluate the behavior of Ir, Ru, and W as permanent modifiers for the simultaneous determination of As, Bi, Pb, Sb, and Se. The performance of the proposed procedure was also verified after the ETAAS analysis of tap waters and reference materials.

A method has been developed for the direct simultaneous determination of Cd and Pb in white and red wine by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ET-AAS) using a transversely heated graphite tube atomizer (THGA) with longitudinal Zeeman-effect background correction. The thermal behavior of both analytes during pyrolysis and atomization stages were investigated in 0.028 mol l(-1) HNO3 and in 1 + 1 v/v diluted wine using mixtures of Pd(NO3)(2) + Mg(NO3)(2) and NH4H2PO4 + Mg(NO3)(2) as chemical modifiers. With 5 mug Pd + 3 mug Mg as the modifiers and a two-step pyrolysis (10 s at 400 degreesC and 10 s at 600 degreesC), the formation of carbonaceous residues inside the atomizer was avoided. For 20 mul of sample (wine + 0.056 mol l(-1) HNO3, 1 + 1, v/v) dispensed into the graphite tube, analytical curves in the 0.10-1.0 mug l(-1) Cd and 5.0-50 mug l(-1) Pb ranges were established. The characteristic mass was approximately 0.6 pg for Cd and 33 pg for Pb, and the lifetime of the tube was approximately 400 firings. The limits of detection (LOD) based on integrated absorbance (0.03 mug l(-1) for Cd, 0.8 mug l(-1) for Pb) exceeded the requirements of Brazilian Food Regulations (decree #55871 from Health Department), which establish the maximum permissible level for Cd at 200 mug l(-1) and for Pb at 500 mug l(-1). The relative standard deviations (n = 12) were typically < 8% for Cd and < 6% for Pb. The recoveries of Cd and Pb added to wine samples varied from 88 to 107% and 93 to 103%, respectively. The accuracy of the direct determination of Cd and Ph was checked for 10 table wines by comparing the results with those obtained for digested wine using single-element ET-AAS, which were in agreement at the 95% confidence level. The characteristics, performance, and application of a novel and simple electrode, namely Pt vertical bar Hg vertical bar Hg-2(MF)(2)vertical bar Graphite, where MF stands for mefenamate ion, are described. This electrode responds to MF with sensitivity of (58.9 +/- 0.7) mV decade(-1) over the range 1.0 x 10(-6) to 1.0 x 10(-2) mol L-1 at pH 6.0-9.0 and a detection limit of 6.2 x 10(-7) mol L-1. The electrode is easily constructed at a relatively low cost with fast response time (within 10-25 s) and can be used for a period of 4 months without significant change in its performance characteristics. The proposed sensor displayed good selectivity for mefenamate in the presence of several substances, especially concerning carboxylate and inorganic anions. The potentiometric sensor was successfully applied to the determination of mefenamic acid in pharmaceuticals and human serum samples. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A method is proposed for the simultaneous determination of Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni in fuel ethanol by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) using W-Rh permanent modifier together with Pd(NO3)(2) + Mg(NO3)(2) conventional modifier. The integrated platform of a transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) was treated with tungsten, followed by rhodium, forming a deposit containing 250 mug W + 200 mug Rh. A 500-muL, volume of fuel ethanol was diluted with 500 muL, of 0.14 mol L-1 HNO3 in an autosampler cup of the spectrometer. Then, 20 muL, of the diluted ethanol was introduced into the pretreated graphite platform followed by the introduction of 5 mug Pd(NO3)(2) + 3 mug Mg(NO3)(2). The injection of this modifier was required to improve arsenic and iron recoveries in fuel ethanol. Calibrations were carried out using multi-element reference solutions prepared in diluted ethanol (1 + 1, v/v) acidified to 0. 14 mol L-1 HNO3. The pyrolysis and atomization temperatures of the heating program were 1200degreesC and 2200degreesC, respectively, which were obtained with multielement reference solutions in acidic diluted ethanol (1 + 1, v/v; 0. 14 mol L-1 HNO3). The characteristic masses for the simultaneous determination in ethanol fuel were 78 pg Al, 33 pg As, 10 pg Cu, 14 pg Fe, 7 pg Mn, and 24 pg Ni. The lifetime of the pretreated tube was about 700 firings. The detection limits (D.L.) were 1.9 mug L-1 Al, 2.9 mug L-1 As, 0.57 mug L-1.Cu, 1.3 mug L-1 Fe, 0.40 mug L-1 Mn, and 1.3 mug L-1 Ni. The relative standard deviations (n = 12) were 4%, 4%, 3%, 1.5%, 1.2%, and 2.2% for Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni, respectively. The recoveries of Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni added to the fuel ethanol samples varied from 81% to 95%, 80% to 98%, 97% to 109%, 85% to 107%, 98% to 106% and 97% to 103%, respectively. Accuracy was checked for the Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni determination in 10 samples purchased at a local gas station in Araraquara-SP City, Brazil. A paired t-test showed that at the 95% confidence level the results were in agreement with those obtained by single-element ETAAS.

The malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and ascorbate oxidase were immobilized independently, onto silanized controlled porous silica and packed in a tygon tube. The reactors were inserted in the flow system, and the malic acid was determined by measurement of NADH produced by enzymatic reaction. The NADH was reoxidized in a wall jet cell that consisted of spectrographic graphite, Ag/AgCl, KCl(sat), and steel needle as work, reference, and counter electrodes, respectively. The current intensities were measured at 390 mV. The malate calibration curve shows a linear range from 5.0 x 10(-6) to 1.0 x 10(-4) molL(-1), the lifetime was 40 analyses, after that a decrease of 20% on the response is observed. Three different citric juices were analyzed and a good correlation between the proposed method and spectrophotometric commercial kit were obtained.

This paper describes the construction of an electrode of the second kind, Pt\Hg\Hg-2(Salic)(2)\Graphite, sensitive to salicylate. This electrode responds to the salicylate ion with a sensivity of 58.66 mV/decade over the range 6.0x10(-4) - 1.0x10(-1) mol/l at pH 6.0 and an ionic strength of 0.500 - 3.00 mol/l, adjusted with NaClO4. The electrode is easily constructed, shows a fast response time, is low in cost, has excellent response stability, and has a lifetime greater than 18 months, which is much longer than those reported earlier for other systems. The influence of 10 different carboxylate and inorganic anions on the electrode response showed that there was negligible interference by most of these ions. It was used to determine aspirin in tablets (after hydrolysis of acetylsalicylic acid to salicylate) by means of the standard additions method. The results obtained using this electrode for aspirin determination, in three different samples of antithermic drugs, compared favorably with the results given by the British Pharmacopoeia method.

A mercury-free electrode chemically modified with carbon paste containing dimethylglyoxime was used for determination of nickel in fuel ethanol. The instrumental parameters and composition of the modified paste were optimized. The analytical curve for nickel determination from 5.0 x 10(-9) to 5.0 x10(-7) mol(-1) was obtained using 25 min of accumulation time. The detection limit and amperometric sensitivity obtained for this method were 2.7 x 10 mol(-1) and 5.2 x 10(8) mu A mol(-1) L, respectively. The values for nickel concentration in four commercial samples of fuel ethanol were obtained in the range of 1.1 x 10(-8) to 6.9 x 10(-8) mol(-1). A comparison to graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) was performed for nickel determination in commercial samples of ethanol.

This work describes an analytical procedure for vanadium determination in human hair slurries by electrothermal AAS using longitudinal heating (LHGA) and transversal heating (THGA) graphite furnace atomizers. The samples were powdered using cryogenic grinding and the hair slurries containing 0.2% (m/v) were prepared in three different media for determination of vanadium: 0.14 mol L-1 HNO3, 0.1% (v/v) Triton X-100 and 0.1% (v/v) water soluble tertiary amines (CFA-C, pH 8). The limits of detection (LOD), limits of quantification (LOQ), and characteristic masses obtained were 0.28, 0.95 mu g L-1 and 35 pg (LHGA) and 0.34, 1.13 mu g L-1 and 78 pg (THGA), respectively. The accuracy of the analytical results obtained by the proposed procedure in both equipments was confirmed by a paired t-test at the 95% confidence level and compared with a conventional procedure based on acid digestion. A new and fast procedure is proposed for cleaning autosampler cups using acid-vapor steam-cleaning with a miniaturized assembly in a microwave-heated sealed Teflon vessel. A glass cactus-shaped holder was made to support six polyethylene autosampler cups (volume, 2.0 mt) inside a 100 mt microwave vessel. Regent-grade nitric acid was added to the vessels, and the system was heated in a microwave oven for 5 min at 300 W. Chromium was determined by graphite-furnace atomic-absorption spectrophotometry. The blank values were lower with cleaned cups compared to untreated cups (i.e., as received from supplier). The quantification limits, estimated from detection limits established with Milli-Q water, were 0.66 and 0.95 mu g Cr L-1 for cleaned and untreated auto-sampler cups, respectively. This paper describes the construction of an electrode of the second kind, Pt\Hg\Hg-2(Bzt)(2)\graphite, sensitive to benzoate ion (Bzt). The electrode provides a near-Nernstian response (-58.19 mV/decade at 25 degrees C) to benzoate ion in the concentration range 1.11 x 10(-1) to 5.00 x 10(-4) M at pH 7.0 and ionic strength 0.500-3.00M, adjusted with NaClO4. The electrode is easily constructed, shows a fast response time, is low in cost, has excellent response stability, and has a lifetime greater than 24 months. which is much longer than those earlier reported for other systems. A further salient feature of the electrode is that perchlorate does not interfere in its response, which may be advantageous in the analysis of perchloric acid-treated samples. It was applied to the determination of sodium benzoate in some commercial expectorating medicinal syrups using the standard additions method. The results obtained by the proposed procedure compare very favorably with those obtained through the reference method recommended by the United States Pharmacopeia. (C) 1998 Academic Press.
