A rather simple but yet effective way to achieve a superhydrophobic film by extending a Teflon film is proposed. The water contact angle can be increased from 118 to 165degrees by extending to ca. 190%. The fibrous crystals and the increasing distance between the fibrous crystals are believed responsible for the high water-contact angle. It indicates that the density of the aligned microstructures is very important for the superhydrophobicity.

A bilayer CdS/ITO film was obtained. The dipped CdS was grown by an ultrasonic colloid deposition (USCD) method. Microstructure of the CdS film made by USCD has a wider transmission range and a higher transmittance. Amorphous indium-tin-oxide (ITO) thin film was deposited using d.c. magnetron-sputtering at room temperature. The ITO films exhibited good conductivity and maximum transmittance of 94%. The CdS/ITO bilayer was investigated by means of GIXD (grazing incidence X-ray diffraction) at different incidence angles (alpha = 0.20-5.00degrees) and XRD. We discuss a model for the thin bilayer film. SEM and AFM show that homogeneous CdS films with a bar-shaped ultrafine particles and ITO film with nanometer structure. The mechanism of the bilayer CdS/ITO film is discussed.

A series of silica-supported 12-silicotungstic acid catalysts (H4SiW12O40, abbreviated as HSiW), modified with various loadings of Teflon (HSiW/SiO2-Teflon), were prepared by an impregnation method. The surface properties of the catalysts were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, NH3-TPD and the Drop Shape Analysis (DSA). SEM results combined with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) measurements of HSiW/SiO2-Teflon revealed that F-compound (Teflon) is effectively coated on the catalyst surface. The contact angles for water and oil of 50 wt% HSiW/SiO2 and HSiW/SiO2-Teflon indicate that HSiW/SiO2-Teflon catalyst enhances not only the surface hydrophobicity but also the surface lipophobicity by means of the addition of Teflon. Silica-supported 12-silicotungstic acid modified with Teflon exhibits higher C-8(=) selectivity and longer lifetime than that of silica-supported 12-silicotungstic acid in isobutene oligomerization. Thus, surface-appropriate lipophobicity of catalysts may be effective for decreasing the interaction between coke precursors and the catalyst surface and for removing deposited coke more easily.

An ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) was functionalized with an iso cyanate-bearing unsaturated monomer, allyl(3-isocyanate-4-tolyl) carbamate (TAI), with dicumyl peroxide as an initiator in a xylene solution. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was used to confirm the formation of EPM-g-TAI. The peak at 2273 cm(-1), characteristic of -NCO groups in EPM-g-TAI, revealed evidence of grafting. The grafting degree was determined with both chemical titration and FTIR. The grafting degree could be adjusted, and the maximum was over 6 wt % without any gelation. The molar mass distribution of EPM-g-TAI was narrower than that of EPM. The rheological behavior of both EPM-g-TAI and EPM was investigated with a rotational rheometer. The apparent viscosity of EPM-g-TAI was higher than that of EPM and increased with an increasing grafting degree of TAI. Surface analysis by contact-angle measurements showed that contact angles of EPM-g-TAI samples to a given polar liquid decreased with an increasing grafting degree of TAI. We also obtained the dispersion component of the surface free energy (gamma(S)(d)), the polar component of the surface free energy (gamma(S)(d)), and the total surface free energy (gamma(S) = gamma(S)(d) + gamma(S)(p)) of the grafted EPM. These parameters increased with the enhancement of the grafting degree, which gave us a quantitative estimation of the polar contribution of the grafted TAI to the total surface free energy of EPM-g-TAI.

Full Paper: A study has been made on the annealing of nylon-1010 under high pressures. Heat treatment of melt-crystallized nylon-1010 was performed at 250degreesC for 30 min in the pressure range 0.7 similar to 2.5 GPa. It was found that the triclinic crystals of virgin nylon-1010 were retained at pressures less than 1.0 GPa or larger than 1.2 GPa. The X-ray diffraction intensity of (100) planes decreased with increasing pressure. The diffraction peaks shifted slightly to higher angles (2theta) relative to the virgin nylon-1010, indicating dense packing of polymer chains at high pressures. The highest melting temperature was 208degreesC for the sample annealed at 1.5 GPa. No extended-chain crystals were formed under the experimental conditions. Crosslinking occurred in the pressure range 1.0 similar to 1.2 GPa. The structure of the crosslinked samples was characterized by means of infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is concluded that a mechanism of crosslinking via carbodiimide can explain the nature of crosslinking of nylon-1010 annealed at high pressures. The remarkable changes of the structure of annealed nylon-1010 are also discussed in this article.

The fully relaxed single-bond torsional potentials and orientation-related rotational potentials of 2,2'-bithiophene (BT) under the interaction of an external electric field (EF) constructed by point charges have been evaluated with semi-empirical AMI and PM3 calculations. The torsional potentials are sensitive to both EF strength and direction. While the EF is parallel to the molecular long axis, the torsional barrier around C-x-C-x' bond obviously rises with increasing the EF strength, whereas the relative energies of syn and anti minima show a slight change. The interaction between the EF and the induced dipole moment has been proposed to elucidate this observation. On the other hand, the relative energy difference between the syn and anti minima shows an obvious change, while the EF is perpendicular to the molecular long axis. This feature has been ascribed to the interaction between the EF and the permanent dipole moment of BT. Furthermore, conformational and orientational analyses in two dimensions have been carried out by changing the torsional and rotational angles in the different EF. The conformation and orientation of a gas-phase BT in the EF are governed by both the above factors.

Crystal and molecular structure of (2.6-dipropylphenylamide) dimethyl (tetra-methyl cyclopentadienyl) silane titanium dichloride (I) was fully characterized by X-ray diffraction. The crystal is obtained from a mixture of ether/hexane as orthorhombic. with a = 12.658 (3) Angstrom. b = 16.62 (3) Angstrom. c = 11.760 (2) Angstrom. V = 2474.2 (9) Angstrom(3). Z = 4, space group Pnma. R = 0.0399; Componud I compose of the pi-bounded ring with its dimethylsilyl-dipropyl phenyl amido group and the two terminal chloride atoms coordinated to central metal to form a so-called constrained geometry catalyst (CGC) structure. The result of molecular mechanics (MM) calculations on compound I shows that bond lengths and bond angles from the MM calculation are comparable to the data obtained from the X-ray diffraction study. The relation of the structure of CGCs and their catalytic activity by MM calculations is also discussed.

In this paper, melt crystallization of poly(ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) under strong electric field was investigated. In the crystal structure of PEEKK, the length of c axis was found to he 1.075 nm, increasing by 7% compared to that of PEEKK crystallized without strong electric field. The molecule chains might take a more extended conformation through the opening of the bridge bond angles by increasing from 124 degrees to 144 degrees under strong electric field in the crystal structure.

The homoepitaxial crystallization in the films of a thermotropic liquid crystalline chloro-ply(aryl ether ketone) is studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED). The homoepitaxy takes place in the temperature range 330-320 degreesC, in which a highly-ordered smectic crystalline phase of the copolymer with a single-crystal-like banded structure is formed during the cooling process from the isotropic melt. The homoepitaxial crystallizations with angles of 32 degrees and 122 degrees between the two b axes are the major populations observed, and possess epitaxial contact planes of (100)(I)-(210)(II) and (010)(I)-(210)(II); respectively.

Self-assembled monolayer of natural single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) from dl:natured plasmid DNA and pBR322/PstI marker was first observed on Au(111) by low-current STM (Lc-STM). The width of ssDNA stripe measured is 0.9 +/- 0.1 nm, which is just half of the theoretical width of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). Each ssDNA stripe consists of bright and dark parts. alternatively; the period of two adjacent bright parts in the same ssDNA stripe measured is 0.4 +/- 0.1 nm, which is consistent with the theoretical distance between two adjacent base pairs in ssDNA. The stripe orientations in ssDNA domains are predominately at angles of 0 degrees, 60 degrees or 120 degrees relative to crystallographically faceted steps on the gold surface. A series of liquid crystalline copolyethers have been synthesized from 1-(4-hydroxy-4'-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane with 1,7-dibromoheptane and 1,12-dibromododecene [coTPPs(7/12)], which represents copolyethers containing both odd and even numbers of methylene units. The molar ratio of odd to even methylene units in this series ranges from 1/9 to 9/1. The coTPPs(7/12) exhibit multiple phase transitions during cooling and heating in differential scanning calorimetry experiments. For all these thermal transitions, a small undercooling and superheating dependence is observed upon cooling and heating at different rates. Three types of phase behaviors can be classified in coTPPs(7/12) on the basis of the structural analyses by wide-angle X-ray diffraction on powder and fiber samples and by electron diffraction experiments in transmission electron microscopy. At room temperature, highly ordered smectic and smectic crystal (SC) phases are identified in coTPPs(7/12: 1/9 and 2/8), which is similar to the homopolymer TPP(m = 12). The coTPPs(7/12: 3/7, 4/6, and 5/5) possess a hexagonal columnar (Phi(H)) phase in which the molecular and columnar axes are parallel to the fiber direction and perpendicular to the hexagonal lateral packing. The coTPPs(7/12: 6/4, 7/3, and 8/2) possess a tilted hexagonal columnar (Phi(TH)) phase with a single tilt angle which increases with the increasing composition of the seven-numbered methylene units. However, in coTPP(7/12: 9/1), a Phi(TH) phase with multiple tilt angles is found. Upon heating, phase structures in most coTPPs(7/12) involving the columnar phases enter directly into the nematic (N) phase, while the coTPP(7/12: 1/9) exhibits a highly ordered smectic F (S-F) phase before it reaches the N phase. One exception is found in coTPP(7/12: 2/8), wherein the transformation from the S-F to Phi(H) occurs prior to the N phase. Combining the copolymer phase behaviors observed with the corresponding homopolymers TPP(n = 7) and TPP(m = 12), a phase diagram describing transition temperatures with respect to the composition can be constructed.

Self-assembled monolayers(SAMs) of trichlorogermanyl propanoic acid derivatives on hydroxylated silicon substrates are prepared for the first time. Contact angle measurement, ellipsometry and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry(XPS) are used to characterize these SAMs, It is demonstrated that a quasi-2D network is formed on the surface of the substrate after molecules adsorbed on it. The molecular chains have certain tilt angles to the substrate surface, The wettabilities of the SAMs are various,because the molecules adsorbed and liquids used in the experiments are different. It can be concluded that trichlorogermanes have similar self-assembly behavior as trichlorosilanes, Four SAMs are studied together: they are acid, ethyl, butyl and hexyl surfaces whose results are of good consistency.

X-ray crystal structures of 2,2',3,3'-and 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (2,2',3,3'- and 3,3',4,4'-BPDA) were determined. The dianhydride isomers have different symmetry caused by difference in two anhydride group positions and the dihedral angles between the two phenyl rings are 62.9 degrees for 2,2',3,3',-BPDA and 0 degrees for 3,3',4,4'-BPDA respectively. The polyimides from 2,2',3,3'-BPDA exhibit enhanced solubility, higher thermal stability, and higher glass transition temperature (T-g) compared with those from 3,3',4,4'-BPDA.

Self-assembled monolayers of 1-teradecanethiol on gold were characterized by means of FTIR-ATR measurements, XPS and contact angle measurements. Linear dichroism measurements using FTIR-ATR are used to estimate the orientation of the alkyl chains. An equation for calculating the orientation angles of the alkyls chains was deduced. Three organo-soluble polyimide powders have been synthesized. Their imidization was verified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The amorphous morphology of their thin films were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Polyimide thin films were prepared by solution casting or spin coating. UV-visible transmission spectra of thin films revealed that they are almost transparent in the range of visible light. With in-plane orientation, revealed by FTIR spectra, negative birefringence (Delta n) of thin films were observed, and refractive indices of the thin films along the film plane (n(TE)) and normal to the plane (n(TM)) were measured by a prism coupler. Because of negative birefringence of the thin films, they tan be substituted for the compensation films for twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (TN-LCDs) to extend their viewing angles. In this paper, a 90 degrees C TN-LCD and 120 degrees C TN-LCD were taken as examples to show the compensation effect of thin films of a qualified polyimide. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
