OBJETIVO: Analisar a associação entre indicadores socioeconômicos, de provisão de serviços públicos odontológicos e de alocação de recursos financeiros em saúde, e identificar se o sentido das associações ocorre em favor da eqüidade vertical. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado um estudo transversal de abordagem ecológica, com dados do Ministério da Saúde referentes a 399 municípios do estado do Paraná, no período de 1998 a 2005. A condição socioeconômica foi aferida por meio do Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano dos municípios, além de indicadores de renda, educação e saneamento básico, os quais foram obtidos nas bases de dados do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística. Os dados foram submetidos a testes estatísticos não-paramétricos: coeficiente de correlação de Spearman, Friedman e Mann-Whitney. RESULTADOS: Houve tendência redistributiva dos recursos federais transferidos aos municípios para o custeio da atenção básica, intensificada a partir do lançamento da Estratégia Saúde da Família. Observou-se expansão das ações de saúde bucal no período analisado, bem como tendência pró-eqüidade na oferta e utilização dos serviços odontológicos em atenção básica. CONCLUSÕES: Houve tendência redistributiva, ou pró-eqüidade, na provisão de serviços odontológicos no estado do Paraná, com maior provisão per capita de recursos ou serviços para municípios com piores indicadores socioeconômicos. Esta tendência se mostrou compatível com as diretrizes programáticas recentes do Ministério da Saúde.

The 60kDa heat shock protein family, Hsp60, constitutes an abundant and highly conserved class of molecules that are highly expressed in chronic-inflammatory and autoimmune processes. Experimental autoimmune uveitis [EAU] is a T cell mediated intraocular inflammatory disease that resembles human uveitis. Mycobacterial and homologous Hsp60 peptides induces uveitis in rats, however their participation in aggravating the disease is poorly known. We here evaluate the effects of the Mycobacterium leprae Hsp65 in the development/progression of EAU and the autoimmune response against the eye through the induction of the endogenous disequilibrium by enhancing the entropy of the immunobiological system with the addition of homologous Hsp. B10. RIII mice were immunized subcutaneously with interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein [IRBP], followed by intraperitoneally inoculation of M. leprae recombinant Hsp65 [rHsp65]. We evaluated the proliferative response, cytokine production and the percentage of CD4(+)IL-17(+), CD4(+)IFN-gamma(+) and CD4(+)Foxp3(+) cells ex vivo, by flow cytometry. Disease severity was determined by eye histological examination and serum levels of anti-IRBP and anti-Hsp60/65 measured by ELISA. EAU scores increased in the Hsp65 group and were associated with an expansion of CD4(+)IFN-gamma(+) and CD4(+)IL-17(+) T cells, corroborating with higher levels of IFN-gamma. Our data indicate that rHsp65 is one of the managers with a significant impact over the immune response during autoimmunity, skewing it to a pathogenic state, promoting both Th1 and Th17 commitment. It seems comprehensible that the specificity and primary function of Hsp60 molecules can be considered as a potential pathogenic factor acting as a whistleblower announcing chronic-inflammatory diseases progression.

The murine model of T. cruzi infection has provided compelling evidence that development of host resistance against intracellular protozoans critically depends on the activation of members of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) family via the MyD88 adaptor molecule. However, the possibility that TLR/MyD88 signaling pathways also control the induction of immunoprotective CD8(+) T cell-mediated effector functions has not been investigated to date. We addressed this question by measuring the frequencies of IFN-gamma secreting CD8(+) T cells specific for H-2K(b)-restricted immunodominant peptides as well as the in vivo Ag-specific cytotoxic response in infected animals that are deficient either in TLR2, TLR4, TLR9 or MyD88 signaling pathways. Strikingly, we found that T. cruzi-infected Tlr2(-/-), Tlr4(-/-), Tlr9(-/-) or Myd88(-/-) mice generated both specific cytotoxic responses and IFN-gamma secreting CD8(+) T cells at levels comparable to WT mice, although the frequency of IFN-gamma(+)CD4(+) cells was diminished in infected Myd88(-/-) mice. We also analyzed the efficiency of TLR4-driven immune responses against T. cruzi using TLR4-deficient mice on the C57BL genetic background (B6 and B10). Our studies demonstrated that TLR4 signaling is required for optimal production of IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha and nitric oxide (NO) in the spleen of infected animals and, as a consequence, Tlr4(-/-) mice display higher parasitemia levels. Collectively, our results indicate that TLR4, as well as previously shown for TLR2, TLR9 and MyD88, contributes to the innate immune response and, consequently, resistance in the acute phase of infection, although each of these pathways is not individually essential for the generation of class I-restricted responses against T. cruzi.

This paper describes the procedures of the analysis Of Pollutant gases, as volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene) emitted by engines, using high-resolution gas chromatography (HRGC). In a broad sense, CI engine burning diesel was compared with B10 and a drastic reduction was observed in the emissions of the aromatic compounds by using B10. Especially for benzene, the reduction of concentrations occurs on the level of about 19.5%. Although a concentration value below 1 mu g ml(-1) has been obtained, this reduction is extremely significant since benzene is a carcinogenic compound. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Trichomonas vaginalis is a flagellated protozoan which causes trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted disease of the human genitourinary tract, The importance of the alternative complement pathway in host defence against T. vaginalis was investigated in vitro. Kinetic studies utilising immunofixation following electrophoresis showed that both a strongly and weakly virulent strain of T, vaginalis activated murine serum C3. In vivo studies with congenic-resistant, C5-deficient, B10.D2/OSn- and C5-sufficient, B10.D2/nSn mice showed that the presence of C5 is a significant factor in the innate host resistance to primary infection with a strongly virulent, but not a weakly virulent trichomonad strain.

Dendritic cells (DC) are considered to be the major cell type responsible for induction of primary immune responses. While they have been shown to play a critical role in eliciting allosensitization via the direct pathway, there is evidence that maturational and/or activational heterogeneity between DC in different donor organs may be crucial to allograft outcome. Despite such an important perceived role for DC, no accurate estimates of their number in commonly transplanted organs have been reported. Therefore, leukocytes and DC were visualized and enumerated in cryostat sections of normal mouse (C57BL/10, B10.BR, C3H) liver, heart, kidney and pancreas by immunohistochemistry (CD45 and MHC class II staining, respectively). Total immunopositive cell number and MHC class II+ cell density (C57BL/10 mice only) were estimated using established morphometric techniques - the fractionator and disector principles, respectively. Liver contained considerably more leukocytes (similar to 5-20 x 10(6)) and DC (similar to 1-3 x 10(6)) than the other organs examined (pancreas: similar to 0.6 x 10(6) and similar to 0.35 x 10(6): heart: similar to 0.8 x 10(6) and similar to 0.4 x 10(6); kidney similar to 1.2 x 10(6) and 0.65 x 10(6), respectively). In liver, DC comprised a lower proportion of all leukocytes (similar to 15-25%) than in the other parenchymal organs examined (similar to 40-60%). Comparatively, DC density in C57BL/10 mice was heart > kidney > pancreas much greater than liver (similar to 6.6 x 10(6), 5 x 10(6), 4.5 x 10(6) and 1.1 x 10(6) cells/cm(3), respectively). When compared to previously published data on allograft survival, the results indicate that the absolute number of MHC class II+ DC present in a donor organ is a poor predictor of graft outcome. Infection with group A streptococci (GAS) can lead to rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) which are a major health concern particularly in indigenous populations worldwide, and especially in Australian Aboriginals. A primary route of GAS infection is via the upper respiratory tract, and therefore, a major goal of research is the development of a mucosal-based GAS vaccine, The majority of the research to date has focused on the GAS M protein since immunity to GAS is mediated by M protein type-specific opsonic antibodies. There are two major impediments to the development of a vaccine-the variability in M proteins and the potential for the induction of an autoimmune response. To develop a safe and broad-based vaccine, we have therefore focused on the GAS M protein conserved C-region, and have identified peptides, J8 and the closely related J8 peptide (J14), which may be important in protective immunity to GAS infection. Using a mucosal animal model system, our data have shown a high degree of throat GAS colonisation in B10.BR mice 24 h following intranasal immunisation with the mucosal adjuvant, cholera toxin B subunit (CTB), and/or diptheria toxoid (dT) carrier, or PBS alone, and challenge with the M1 GAS strain. However, GAS colonisation of the throat was significantly reduced following intranasal immunisation of mice with the vaccine candidate J8 conjugated to dT or J14-dT when administered with CTB. Moreover, J8-dT/CTB and J14-dT/CTB-immunised mice had a significantly higher survival when compared to CTB and PBS-immunised control mice. These data indicate that immunity to GAS infection can be evoked by intranasal immunisation with a GAS M protein C-region peptide vaccine that contains a protective B cell epitope and lacks a T cell autoepitope. Este texto lança algumas reflexões sobre os axiomas do capitalismo que permitem descodificar todas as convenções das sociedades chamadas “selvagens”, e realizar as promessas de poder das sociedades déspotas, “bárbaras”. Simultaneamente, o capitalismo, provoca uma multiplicação das fraturas territoriais e de globalizações de toda ordem. Nessa descodificação de todos os valores, os fluxos (sociais, econômicos, políticos) liberados pelo capitalismo hesitam entre, de um lado, uma descodificação que levaria a uma desterritorialização radical dos processos e, de outro lado, um reaparecimento e re-atualização conservadora desses fluxos liberados pelo próprio processo de “criação destrutiva”.

En enero de 2014, continuando con la intención expresada en Guimarães (Portugal), en noviembre de 2013, durante la VII Reunión de la Geografía Física y Medio Ambiente (EGFA VII), la Asociación Portuguesa de Prevención de Riesgos y Seguridad (RISCOS) creó las condiciones para el establecimiento de una sección temática dedicada al estudio de los efectos de los incendios sobre los suelos y que vendría a ser conocida “Red Nacional para el Estudio de los Incendios Forestales y sus Efectos sobre los Suelos” (RIS). Esta fue una iniciativa inspirada en Fuegored (Red Temática Nacional Efectos de los Incendios Forestales sobre los Suelos) y que, de esta manera, desea establecer una red nacional de investigadores con el fin de facilitar la promoción y difusión de los resultados de sus pesquisas científicas sobre este tema, realizadas en Portugal, así como la interacción entre el mundo científico y el manejo forestal . La RIS fue fundada por 12 miembros, que representan 7 universidades portuguesas y en la actualidad cuenta con 23 miembros de 9 universidades y escuelas politécnicas. Se espera que crezca y que puede añadir todos los que participan en la investigación científica de los incendios forestales y sus efectos en los suelos.

Partiendo de la interrelación existente entre la educación cultural de las personas y el uso que hacen de sus tiempos cotidianos, en el artículo se pone de manifiesto la relevancia que tiene el ocio en el desarrollo humano. Más aún cuando nos referimos a adolescentes y jóvenes que, dada la realidad socio familiar que les ha venido impuesta, ven condicionada la satisfacción de muchas de las necesidades básicas que favorecen una vida de y con calidad, en cuyo logro el derecho al ocio adquiere un protagonismo clave. En este sentido, se presentarán parte de los resultados de un proyecto de investigación, cuyo objetivo principal residía en conocer e interpretar cómo inciden los tiempos escolares en los procesos de socialización adolescente y juvenil, así como en los modos de configurar su tiempo libre. Más en concreto: se analizarán algunos de los datos obtenidos en un cuestionario diseñado ad hoc y aplicado a una muestra de 3.306 alumnos/as de entre 12 y 17 años que cursaban Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) en centros educativos de la geografía española en el curso académico 2010-2011. Conocer la utilización que hace este colectivo de sus tiempos, tiene para nosotros en este artículo una doble finalidad: reflexionar en qué medida las actividades que realizan favorecen la adquisición de aprendizajes de carácter cultural; indagar si existe alguna relación significativa entre la edad, el contexto familiar y las actividades que llevan a cabo.

Con el devenir de los siglos, la mención de inundación adquirió una connotación negativa; ya no se la asocia con el efecto benéfico que le atribuían los antiguos egipcios, o sea, con el concepto de recurso, sino con los eventuales perjuicios que produciría en márgenes densamente pobladas, es decir, con el concepto de riesgo. En si una predicción no especifica cuándo se producirá un suceso hipotético crítico, sino, cual será la magnitud de este dada su duración y probabilidad. Por lo tanto, se asume que sucederá en algún momento de un período plurianual, vinculado con la planificación del área potencialmente afectable, lo cual torna improcedente asignarle fecha y hora. Esto la diferencia de un pronóstico, que anticipa el monto y el tiempo de ocurrencia, con el objeto de informar acerca del acontecimiento o inminencia de un fenómeno peligroso real durante una emergencia hídrica. La presente propuesta tiene como objetivo principal abordar el génesis de los eventos hidrológicos extremos, mediante la formación de recursos humanos propios, quienes se verán fortalecidos gracias a la colaboración de equipos técnicos especializados ajenos a nuestra institución académica, siendo estos equipos pioneros en abordar la problemática planteada. A su vez, se pretende generar una importante base de datos hidrológicos, la cual será empleada para validar y generalizar técnicas predictivas, brindando herramientas técnicas de validez y robustez comprobada, a todos aquellos entes responsables Vulnerabilidad del sistemade la planificación del uso del suelo, la gestión integrada del recurso hídrico, la defensa civil y la salud pública entre otros.
