A method for the direct determination of Ni in soft drinks by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry using a transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA), Zeeman-effect background corrector, and Co as the internal standard (IS) is proposed. Magnesium nitrate was used to stabilize both Ni and Co. All diluted samples (1+1) in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3 and reference solutions [5.0-50 mu g L-1 Ni in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3] were spiked with 50 mu g L-1 Co. For a 20-mu L sample dispensed into the atomizer, correlations between the ratio of absorbance of Ni to absorbance of Co and the analyte concentration were close to 0.9996. The relative standard deviation of the measurements varied from 0.5 to 3.4% and 1.0 to 7.0% (n=12) with and without IS, respectively. Recoveries within 98-104% for Ni spikes were obtained using IS. The characteristic mass was calculated as 43 pg Ni and the limit of detection was 1.4 mu g L-1. The accuracy of the method was checked for the direct determination of Ni in soft drinks and the results obtained with IS were better than those without IS.

BiFeO3 thin films free of secondary phases were obtained by the soft chemical solution on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates after annealing at 500 degrees C for 2 h. The film grown in the (100) direction presented a remanent polarization P-r of 31 mu C/cm(2) at room temperature. Electrical measurements using both quasistatic hysteresis and pulsed polarization confirm the existence of ferroelectricity with a switched polarization of 60-70 mu C/cm(2), Delta P=(P-*-P). Low leakage conduction and an out-of-plane piezoelectric (d(3)) coefficient of 40 pm/V were obtained by the improvement of preparation technology.

Statement of problem. Two problems found in prostheses with soft liners are bond failure to the acrylic resin base and loss of elasticity due to material aging.Purpose. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of thermocycling on the bond strength and elasticity of 4 long-term soft denture liners to acrylic resin bases.Material and methods. Four soft lining materials (Molloplast-B, Flexor, Permasoft, and Pro Tech) and 2 acrylic resins (Classico, and Lucitone 199) were processed for testing according to manufacturers' instructions. Twenty rectangular specimens (10 X 10-mm(2) cross-sectional area) and twenty cylinder specimens (12.7-mm diameter X 19.0-mm height) for each liner/resin combination were used for the tensile and deformation tests, respectively. Specimen shape and liner thickness were standardized. Samples were divided into a test group that was thermocycled 3000 times and a control group that was stored for 24 hours in water at 37degreesC. Mean bond strength, expressed in megapascals (Wa), was determined in the tensile test with the use of a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Elasticity, expressed as percent of permanent deformation, was calculated with an instrument for measuring permanent deformation described in ADA/ANSI specification 18. Data from both tests were examined with 1-way analysis of variance and a Tukey test, with calculation of a Scheffe interval at a 95% confidence level.Results. In the tensile test under control conditions, Molloplast-B (1.51 +/- 0.28 MPa [mean SD]) and Pro Tech (1.44 +/- 0.27 MPa) liners had higher bond strength values than the others (P < .05). With regard to the permanent deformation test, the lowest values were observed for Molloplast-B (0.48% +/- 0.19%) and Flexor (0.44% +/- 0.14%) (P < .05). Under thermocycling conditions, the highest bond strength occurred with Molloplast-B (1.37 +/- 0.24 MPa) (P < .05) With regard to the deformation test, Flexor (0.46% +/- 0.13%) and Molloplast-B (0.44% +/- 0.17%) liners had lower deformation values than the others (P < .05).Conclusion. The results of this in vitro study indicated that bond strength and permanent deformity values of the 4 soft denture liners tested varied according to their chemical composition. These tests are not completely valid for application to dental restorations because the forces they encounter are more closely related to shear and tear. However, the above protocol serves as a good method of investigation to evaluate differences between thermocycled and control groups.

Single-phase perovskite structure BaZrxTi1-xO3 (BZT) (0.05less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.25) thin films were deposited on Pt-Ti-SiO2-Si substrates by the spin-coating technique. The structural modifications in the thin films were studied using x-ray diffraction and micro-Raman scattering techniques. Lattice parameters calculated from x-ray data indicate an increase in lattice (a axis) with the increasing content of zirconium in these films. Such Zr substitution also result in variations of the phonon mode wave numbers, especially those of lower wave numbers, for BaZrxTi1-xO3 thin films, corroborate to the structural change caused by the zirconium doping. on the other hand, Raman modes persist above structural phase transition, although all optical modes should be Raman inactive in the cubic phase. The origin of these modes must be interpreted as a function of a local breakdown of the cubic symmetry, which could be a result of some kind of disorder. The BZT thin films exhibited a satisfactory dielectric constant close to 181-138, and low dielectric loss tan delta<0.03 at the frequency of 1 kHz. The leakage current density of the BZT thin films was studied at elevated temperatures and the data obey the Schottky emission model. Through this analysis the Schottky barrier height values 0.68, 1.39, and 1.24 eV were estimated to the BZT5, BZT15, and BZT25 thin films, respectively. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12, BIT) films were evaluated for use as lead-free piezoelectric thin films in micro-electromechanical systems. The films were grown by the polymeric precursor method on LaNiO3/SiO2/Si (1 0 0) (LNO), RuO2/SiO2/Si (1 0 0) (RuO2) and Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (1 0 0) (Pt) bottom electrodes in a microwave furnace at 700 degrees C for 10 min. The domain structure was investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). Although the converse piezoelectric coefficient, d(33), regardless of bottom electrode is around (similar to 40 pm/V), those over RuO2 and LNO exhibit better ferroelectric properties, higher remanent polarization (15 and 10 mu C/cm(2)), lower drive voltages (2.6 and 1.3 V) and are fatigue-free. The experimental results demonstrated that the combination of the polymeric precursor method assisted with a microwave furnace is a promising technique to obtain films with good qualities for applications in ferroelectric and piezoelectric devices. The effect of the Sb addition on the microstructural and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film was studied in this work. Experimental results show that the Sb addition allowed to control the grain size and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film, resulting in a nanostructured material. The nanostructured Sb-doped SnO2 thin films present high electrical conductivity, even in the presence of high porosity, supporting the hypothesis that nanostructured material must possess strong electrical conductivity. This work involves important aspects that can be applied to the development of high performance transparent conducting thin film. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This clinical report describes the use of a subepithelial connective tissue graft to recontour a soft tissue margin discrepancy for a single-implant crown in the anterior maxilla. This procedure demonstrates that the use of soft tissue grafts to correct an esthetic deficiency may be a feasible approach to establish new and stable peri-implant soft tissue contours. The patient presented was followed for 18 months.

This in situ/ex vivo study assessed the effect of fluoride dentifrice on eroded enamel subjected to brushing abrasion. In a crossover study performed in 2 phases, 10 volunteers wore acrylic palatal appliances, each containing 3 human enamel blocks. Dentifrice was used to brush the volunteers' teeth and the specimens subjected to abrasion. In phases A and B the dentifrices used had the same formulation, except for the absence or presence of fluoride, respectively. The blocks were subjected to erosion by immersion of the appliances in a cola drink for 5 min, 4 times a day. Then the blocks were brushed, and the appliance was replaced into the mouth. Enamel alterations were determined using profilometry and percentage change in surface microhardness (%SMHC) tests. The data were tested using the paired t test. The mean wear values (+/- SD, mu m) were: group A 6.84 +/- 1.72 and group B 5.38 +/- 1.21 (p = 0.04). The mean %SMHC values (+/- SD) were: group A 54.6 +/- 16.2 and group B 45.7 +/- 6.8 (p = 0.04). Fluoride dentifrice had a protective effect on eroded enamel subjected to brushing abrasion. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel.

Barium strontium titanate (Ba0.65Sr0.35TiO3) nanocrystalline thin films, which were produced by the soft chemical method, were crystallized at low temperature using a domestic microwave oven. A SiC susceptor were used to absorb the microwave energy and rapidly transfer the heat to the film. Low microwave power and short time have been used. The films obtained are crack-free, well-adhered, and fully crystallized. The microstructure displayed a polycrystalline nature with nanograin size. The metal-BST-metal structure of the thin films treated at 700 degrees C show food electric properties. The ferroelectric nature of the BST35 thin film was indicated by buttertly- shaped C-V curves. The capacitance-frequency curves reveal that the dielectric constant may reach a value up to 800 at 100kHz. The dissipation factor was 0.01 at 100kHz. The charge storage density as function of applied voltage graph showed that the charge storage densities are suitable for use in trench type 64 Mb ( 1-5 mu C/cm(2) and 265 Mb (2-11 mu C/cm(2)) DRAMs. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Lead zirconate titanate, Pb(Zr0.3Ti0.7)O-3 (PZT) thin films were prepared with success by the polymeric precursor method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the formation of the PZT perovskite phase. X-ray diffraction revealed that the film showed good crystallinity and no presence of secondary phases was identified. This indicates that the PZT thin films were crystallized in a single phase. PZT thin films showed a well-developed dense grain structure with uniform distribution, without the presence of rosette structure. The Raman spectra undoubtedly revealed these thin films in the tetragonal phase. For the thin films annealed at the 500-700 degreesC range, the vibration modes of the oxygen sublattice of the PZT perovskite phase were confirmed by FT-IR. The room temperature dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the PZT films, measured at 1 kHz were 646 and 0.090, respectively, for thin film with 365 nm thickness annealed at 700 degreesC for 2 h. A typical P-E hysteresis loop was observed and the measured values of P-s, P-r and E-c were 68 muC/cm(2), 44 muC/cm(2) and 123 kV/cm, respectively. The leakage current density was about 4.8 x 10(-7) A/cm(2) at 1.5 V. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The electronic structure of Pb1-xLaxTiO3 (PLT) compounds for x ranging from 0 to 30 at. % of La is investigated by means of soft x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) at the Ti L-3,L-2 and O K edges. The greatest modification in the structure of the Ti 2p XANES spectra of the PLT compounds is observed in the region of the high energy peak of the L-3 edge (e(g) states), which exhibits a splitting in the undoped sample. As the amount of lanthanum increases, this splitting becomes less pronounced. This modification is interpreted as a decrease in the degree of disorder of titanium atoms, which is correlated to the substitution of Pb by La atoms. The structural changes observed at the low energy peaks of the O K-edge XANES spectra of the PLT compounds may be interpreted in terms of hybridization between O 2p, Ti 3d, and Pb 6p orbitals. A decrease in the degree of hybridization observed as Pb atoms are replaced by La atoms may be related to the differences in the ferroelectric properties observed between x=0.0 and x=0.30 compounds. There has been persistent controversy regarding the nature of cell differentiation in alveolar soft-part sarcoma (ASPS) since its first description in 1952. Some studies suggest that ASPS might represent an unusual variant of skeletal muscle tumor, Given the availability of new monoclonal antibodies to probe for skeletal muscle differentiation and the rapid advance in immunocytochemical techniques for deparaffinized, formalin-fixed tissue sections, we wished to test the proposed hypothesis that ASPS might represent a new type of rhabdomyosarcoma Twelve archival samples of ASPS were retrieved, and we investigated the expression of two myogenic regulatory proteins, MyoD1 and myogenin, as rvell as other muscle-associated proteins, using sensitive immunocytochemical techniques. Despite the presence of desmin immunostaining in six ASPSs, no tumors were positive for either muscle actin or myoglobin Most importantly, no specimen showed nuclear expression of MyoD1 or myogenin, In 11 tumors, however, there was considerable granular immunostaining in the tumor cell cytoplasm with the anti-MyoD1 monoclonal antibody 5.8A, a phenomenon observed in various nonmuscle normal and neoplastic tissues with this antibody, To analyze the exact nature of immunostaining of MyoD1 and desmin in ASPS, biochemical analyses using available fresh frozen tumor tissue were performed, Although a 53-kDa band was noted with antidesmin antibody on Western blot analysis, no specific protein band that corresponds to the 45-kDa MyoD1 was detected with antibody 5.8A. These results confirm the presence of desmin in ASPS but argue against authentic expression of MyoD1, They also suggest that the cytoplasmic immunostaining observed with anti-MyoD1 antibody 5.8A most likely represents a nonspecific cross-reaction with an unknown cytoplasmic antigen, Considering the master role that MyoD1 and myogenin play in skeletal muscle commitment and differentiation and the lack of expression of these two proteins in ASPS as determined immunocytochemically and biochemically, we think that the histogenesis of ASPS remains unknown.
