Os algoritmos baseados no paradigma Simulated Annealing e suas variações são atualmente usados de forma ampla na resolução de problemas de otimização de larga escala. Esta popularidade é resultado da estrutura extremamente simples e aparentemente universal dos algoritmos, da aplicabilidade geral e da habilidade de fornecer soluções bastante próximas da ótima. No início da década de 80, Kirkpatrick e outros apresentaram uma proposta de utilização dos conceitos de annealing (resfriamento lento e controlado de sólidos) em otimização combinatória. Esta proposta considera a forte analogia entre o processo físico de annealing e a resolução de problemas grandes de otimização combinatória. Simulated Annealing (SA) é um denominação genérica para os algoritmos desenvolvidos com base nesta proposta. Estes algoritmos combinam técnicas de busca local e de randomização. O objetivo do presente trabalho é proporcionar um entendimento das características do Simulated Annealing e facilitar o desenvolvimento de algoritmos com estas características. Assim, é apresentado como Simulated Annealing e suas variações estão sendo utilizados na resolução de problemas de otimização combinatória, proposta uma formalização através de um método de desenvolvimento de algoritmos e analisados aspectos de complexidade. O método de desenvolvimento especifica um programa abstrato para um algoritmo Simulated Annealing seqüencial, identifica funções e predicados que constituem os procedimentos deste programa abstrato e estabelece axiomas que permitem a visualização das propriedades que estes procedimentos devem satisfazer. A complexidade do Simulated Annealing é analisada a partir do programa abstrato desenvolvido e de seus principais procedimentos, permitindo o estabelecimento de uma equação genérica para a complexidade. Esta equação genérica é aplicável aos algoritmos desenvolvidos com base no método proposto. Uma prova de correção é apresentada para o programa abstrato e um código exemplo é analisado com relação aos axiomas estabelecidos. O estabelecimento de axiomas tem como propósito definir uma semântica para o algoritmo, o que permite a um desenvolvedor analisar a correção do código especificado para um algoritmo levando em consideração estes axiomas. O trabalho foi realizado a partir de um estudo introdutório de otimização combinatória, de técnicas de resolução de problemas, de um levantamento histórico do uso do Simulated Annealing, das variações em torno do modelo e de embasamentos matemáticos documentados. Isto permitiu identificar as características essenciais dos algoritmos baseados no paradigma, analisar os aspectos relacionados com estas características, como as diferentes formas de realizar uma prescrição de resfriamento e percorrer um espaço de soluções, e construir a fundamentação teórica genérica proposta.

Na unfolding method of linear intercept distributions and secction área distribution was implemented for structures with spherical grains. Although the unfolding routine depends on the grain shape, structures with spheroidal grains can also be treated by this routine. Grains of non-spheroidal shape can be treated only as approximation. A software was developed with two parts. The first part calculates the probability matrix. The second part uses this matrix and minimizes the chi-square. The results are presented with any number of size classes as required. The probability matrix was determined by means of the linear intercept and section area distributions created by computer simulation. Using curve fittings the probability matrix for spheres of any sizes could be determined. Two kinds of tests were carried out to prove the efficiency of the Technique. The theoretical tests represent ideal cases. The software was able to exactly find the proposed grain size distribution. In the second test, a structure was simulated in computer and images of its slices were used to produce the corresponding linear intercept the section area distributions. These distributions were then unfolded. This test simulates better reality. The results show deviations from the real size distribution. This deviations are caused by statistic fluctuation. The unfolding of the linear intercept distribution works perfectly, but the unfolding of section area distribution does not work due to a failure in the chi-square minimization. The minimization method uses a matrix inversion routine. The matrix generated by this procedure cannot be inverted. Other minimization method must be used

This work focuses on the creation and applications of a dynamic simulation software in order to study the hard metal structure (WC-Co). The technological ground used to increase the GPU hardware capacity was Geforce 9600 GT along with the PhysX chip created to make games more realistic. The software simulates the three-dimensional carbide structure to the shape of a cubic box where tungsten carbide (WC) are modeled as triangular prisms and truncated triangular prisms. The program was proven effective regarding checking testes, ranging from calculations of parameter measures such as the capacity to increase the number of particles simulated dynamically. It was possible to make an investigation of both the mean parameters and distributions stereological parameters used to characterize the carbide structure through cutting plans. Grounded on the cutting plans concerning the analyzed structures, we have investigated the linear intercepts, the intercepts to the area, and the perimeter section of the intercepted grains as well as the binder phase to the structure by calculating the mean value and distribution of the free path. As literature shows almost consensually that the distribution of the linear intercepts is lognormal, this suggests that the grain distribution is also lognormal. Thus, a routine was developed regarding the program which made possible a more detailed research on this issue. We have observed that it is possible, under certain values for the parameters which define the shape and size of the Prismatic grain to find out the distribution to the linear intercepts that approach the lognormal shape. Regarding a number of developed simulations, we have observed that the distribution curves of the linear and area intercepts as well as the perimeter section are consistent with studies on static computer simulation to these parameters.

New drug delivery systems have been used to increase chemotherapy efficacy due the possible drug resistance of cancer cells. Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) microparticles are able to reduce toxicity and prolong methotrexate (MTX) release. In addition, the use of PLA/poloxamer polymer blends can improve drug release due to changes in the interaction of particles with biological surfaces. The aim of this study was developing spray dried biodegradable MTX-loaded microparticles and evaluate PLA interactions with different kinds of Pluronic® (PLUF127 and PLUF68) in order to modulate drug release. The variables included different drug:polymer (1:10, 1:4.5, 1:3) and polymer:copolymer ratios (25:75, 50:50, 75:25). The precision and accuracy of spray drying method was confirmed assessing drug loading into particles (75.0- 101.3%). The MTX/PLA microparticles showed spherical shape with an apparently smooth surface, which was dependent on the PLU ratio used into blends particles. XRD and thermal analysis demonstrated that the drug was homogeneously dispersed into polymer matrix, whereas the miscibility among components was dependent on the used polymer:copolymer ratio. No new drug- polymer bond was identified by FTIR analysis. The in vitro performance of MTX-loaded PLA microparticles demonstrated an extended-release profile fitted using Korsmeyer- Peppas kinetic model. The PLU accelerated drug release rate possible due PLU leached in the matrix. Nevertheless, drug release studies carried out in cell culture demonstrated the ability of PLU modulating drug release from blend microparticles. This effect was confirmed by cytotoxicity observed according to the amount of drug released as a function of time. Thus, studied PLU was able to improve the performance of spray dried MTX-loaded PLA microparticles, which can be successfully used as carries for modulated drug delivery with potential in vivo application

To determine the incidence of rotavirus infection among dairy herds in the State of Sdo Paulo, Brazil, 576 faecal samples obtained from calves aged 1-45 days with and without diarrhoea, reared on 63 dairy cattle farms, were analyzed. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) identified 28 samples positive for group A rotavirus, while four samples, two diarrhoeic and two non-diarrhoeic, showed a bisegmented genome with a typical picobirnavirus pattern. Electron microscopy revealed spherical virus particles with a diameter of 37 nm and without a defined surface structure. The present study is the first report of a bisegmented virus identified in cattle in Brazil. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

A erosão em entressulcos resulta da desagregação causada pelo impacto das gotas de chuva na superfície do solo e pelo transporte superficial das partículas do solo desagregadas, onde se encontram a matéria orgânica e os nutrientes fundamentais para a produção agrícola. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar as perdas de solo, matéria orgânica e nutrientes em uma vertente localizada em uma área de Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrófico, cultivada com cana-de-açúcar, que é colhida mecanicamente. As parcelas experimentais foram submetidas à ação de uma chuva simulada com intensidade de 60 mm h-1, durante 65 minutos. Foram feitas análises do sedimento erodido para a determinação do volume de solução, das perdas de solo, matéria orgânica e nutrientes. Houve maiores perdas de solo, matéria orgânica e nutrientes nos sedimentos oriundos das parcelas com 0% e 25% de cobertura por palha de cana-de-açúcar. em média, essas perdas foram reduzidas nas parcelas com 75% e 100% de cobertura com palha de cana-de-açúcar. Os resultados permitiram concluir que uma cobertura com palha de cana-de-açúcar acima de 50%, da área colhida, reduz a perda de solo e de matéria orgânica, bem como diminui a concentração de nutrientes no sedimento erodido.

This paper analyzes the performance of a parallel implementation of Coupled Simulated Annealing (CSA) for the unconstrained optimization of continuous variables problems. Parallel processing is an efficient form of information processing with emphasis on exploration of simultaneous events in the execution of software. It arises primarily due to high computational performance demands, and the difficulty in increasing the speed of a single processing core. Despite multicore processors being easily found nowadays, several algorithms are not yet suitable for running on parallel architectures. The algorithm is characterized by a group of Simulated Annealing (SA) optimizers working together on refining the solution. Each SA optimizer runs on a single thread executed by different processors. In the analysis of parallel performance and scalability, these metrics were investigated: the execution time; the speedup of the algorithm with respect to increasing the number of processors; and the efficient use of processing elements with respect to the increasing size of the treated problem. Furthermore, the quality of the final solution was verified. For the study, this paper proposes a parallel version of CSA and its equivalent serial version. Both algorithms were analysed on 14 benchmark functions. For each of these functions, the CSA is evaluated using 2-24 optimizers. The results obtained are shown and discussed observing the analysis of the metrics. The conclusions of the paper characterize the CSA as a good parallel algorithm, both in the quality of the solutions and the parallel scalability and parallel efficiency

The problem of a spinless particle subject to a general mixing of vector and scalar screened Coulomb potentials in a two-dimensional world is analyzed and its bounded solutions are found. Some unusual results, including the existence of a bona fide solitary zero-eigenmode solution, are revealed for the Klein-Gordon equation. The cases of pure vector and scalar potentials, already analyzed in previous works, are obtained as particular cases.

Dirac-like monopoles are studied in three-dimensional Abelian Maxwell and Maxwell-Chern-Simons models. Their scalar nature is highlighted and discussed through a dimensional reduction of four-dimensional electrodynamics with electric and magnetic sources. Some general properties and similarities whether considered in Minkowski or Euclidean space are mentioned. However, by virtue of the structure of the space-time in which they are studied, a number of differences among them occur. Furthermore, we pay attention to some consequences of these objects when they act upon the usual particles. Among other subjects, special attention is given to the study of a Lorentz-violating nonminimal coupling between neutral fermions and the field generated by a monopole alone. In addition, an analogue of the Aharonov-Casher effect is discussed in this framework.

The problem of confinement of spinless particles in 1 + 1 dimensions is approached with a linear potential by considering a mixing of Lorentz vector and scalar couplings. Analytical bound-states solutions are obtained when the scalar coupling is of sufficient intensity compared to the vector coupling. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The problem of a spinless particle subject to a general mixing of vector and scalar inversely linear potentials in a two-dimensional world is analyzed. Exact bounded solutions are found in closed form by imposing boundary conditions on the eigenfunctions which ensure that the effective Hamiltonian is Hermitian for all the points of the space. The nonrelativistic limit of our results adds a new support to the conclusion that even-parity solutions to the nonrelativistic one-dimensional hydrogen atom do not exist. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
