An x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of Nb/Al wedge bilayers, oxidized by both plasma and natural oxidation, is reported. The main goal is to show that the oxidation state¿i.e., O:(oxidize)Al ratio¿, structure and thickness of the surface oxide layer, as well as the thickness of the metallic Al leftover, as functions of the oxidation procedure, can be quantitatively evaluated from the XPS spectra. This is relevant to the detailed characterization of the insulating barriers in (magnetic) tunnel junctions

Charged and neutral oxygen vacancies in the bulk and on perfect and defective surfaces of MgO are characterized as quantum-mechanical subsystems chemically bonded to the host lattice and containing most of the charge left by the removed oxygens. Attractors of the electron density appear inside the vacancy, a necessary condition for the existence of a subsystem according to the atoms in molecules theory. The analysis of the electron localization function also shows attractors at the vacancy sites, which are associated to a localization basin shared with the valence domain of the nearest oxygens. This polyatomic superanion exhibits chemical trends guided by the formal charge and the coordination of the vacancy. The topological approach is shown to be essential to understand and predict the nature and chemical reactivity of these objects. There is not a vacancy but a coreless pseudoanion that behaves as an activated host oxygen.

The electronic structure of the molecular solid Ni(tmdt)2, the only well characterized neutral molecular metal to date, has been studied by means of first-principles density functional calculations. It is shown that these calculations correctly describe the metallic vs semiconducting behavior of molecular conductors of this type. The origin of the band overlap leading to the metallic character and the associated Fermi surfaces has been studied.

Geometric parameters of binary (1:1) PdZn and PtZn alloys with CuAu-L10 structure were calculated with a density functional method. Based on the total energies, the alloys are predicted to feature equal formation energies. Calculated surface energies of PdZn and PtZn alloys show that (111) and (100) surfaces exposing stoichiometric layers are more stable than (001) and (110) surfaces comprising alternating Pd (Pt) and Zn layers. The surface energy values of alloys lie between the surface energies of the individual components, but they differ from their composition weighted averages. Compared with the pure metals, the valence d-band widths and the Pd or Pt partial densities of states at the Fermi level are dramatically reduced in PdZn and PtZn alloys. The local valence d-band density of states of Pd and Pt in the alloys resemble that of metallic Cu, suggesting that a similar catalytic performance of these systems can be related to this similarity in the local electronic structures.

The nature of the chemical bond in three titanium oxides of different crystal structure and different formal oxidation state has been studied by means of the ab initio cluster-model approach. The covalent and ionic contributions to the bond have been measured from different theoretical techniques. All the analysis is consistent with an increasing of covalence in the TiO, Ti2O3, and TiO2 series as expected from chemical intuition. Moreover, the use of the ab initio cluster-model approach combined with different theoretical techniques has permitted us to quantify the degree of ionic character, showing that while TiO can approximately be described as an ionic compound, TiO2 is better viewed as a rather covalent oxide.

AIM: Specific factors responsible for interindividual variability should be identified and their contribution quantified to improve the usefulness of biological monitoring. Among others, age is an easily identifiable determinant, which could play an important impact on biological variability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A compartmental toxicokinetic model developed in previous studies for a series of metallic and organic compounds was applied to the description of age differences. Young male physiological and metabolic parameters, based on Reference Man information, were taken from preceding studies and were modified to take into account age based on available information about age differences. RESULTS: Numerical simulation using the kinetic model with the modified parameters indicates in some cases important differences due to age. The expected changes are mostly of the order of 10-20%, but differences up to 50% were observed in some cases. CONCLUSION: These differences appear to depend on the chemical and on the biological entity considered. Further work should be done to improve our estimates of these parameters, by considering for example uncertainty and variability in these parameters. [Authors]

Purpose: Cervical foraminal injection performed with a direct foraminal approach may induce serious neurologic complications. We describe a technique of CT-guided cervical facet joint (CFJ) injection as an indirect foraminal injection, including feasibility and diffusion pathways of the contrast agent. Methods and materials: Retrospective study included 84 punctures in 65 consecutive patients presenting neck pain and/or radiculopathy related to osteoarthritis or soft disc herniation. CT images were obtained from C2 to T1 in supine position, with a metallic landmark on the skin. CFJ punctures were performed by MSK senior radiologists with a lateral approach. CT control of the CFJ opacification was performed after injections of contrast agent (1 ml), followed by slow-acting corticosteroid (25 mg). CFJ opacification was considered as successful when joint space and/or capsular recess opacification occurred. The diffusion of contrast agent in foraminal and epidural spaces was recorded. We assessed the epidural diffusion both on axial and sagittal images, with a classification in two groups (small diffusion or large diffusion). Results: CFJ opacification was successful in 82% (69/84). An epidural and/or foraminal opacification was obtained in 74% (51/69). A foraminal opacification occurred in 92% (47/51) and an epidural opacification in 63% (32/51), with small diffusion in 47% (15/32) and large diffusion in 53% (17/32). No complication occurred. Conclusion: CT- guided CFJ injection is easy to perform and safe. It is most often successful, with a frequent epidural and/or foraminal diffusion of the contrast agent. This technique could be an interesting and safe alternative to foraminal cervical injection.

The use of non-metallic load transfer and reinforcement devices for concrete highway pavements is a possible alternative to avoid corrosion problems related to the current practice of steel materials. Laboratory and field testing of highway pavement dowel bars, made of both steel and fiber composite materials, and fiber composite tie rods were carried out in this research investigation. Fatigue, static, and dynamic testing was performed on full-scale concrete pavement slabs which were supported by a simulated subgrade and which included a single transverse joint. The bahavior of the full-scale specimens with both steel and fiber composite dowels placed in the test joints was monitored during several million load cycles which simulated truck traffic at a transverse joint. Static bond tests were conducted on fiber composite tie rods to determine the required embedment length. These tests took the form of bending tests which included curvature and shear in the embedment zone and pullout tests which subjected the test specimen to axial tension only. Fiber composite dowel bars were placed at two transverse joints during construction of a new concrete highway pavement in order to evaluate their performance under actual field conditions. Fiber composite tie rods were also placed in the longitudinal joint between the two fiber composite doweled transverse joints.

In order to study the various health influencing parameters related to engineered nanoparticles as well as to soot emitted b diesel engines, there is an urgent need for appropriate sampling devices and methods for cell exposure studies that simulate the respiratory system and facilitate associated biological and toxicological tests. The objective of the present work was the further advancement of a Multiculture Exposure Chamber (MEC) into a dose-controlled system for efficient delivery of nanoparticles to cells. It was validated with various types of nanoparticles (diesel engine soot aggregates, engineered nanoparticles for various applications) and with state-of-the-art nanoparticle measurement instrumentation to assess the local deposition of nanoparticles on the cell cultures. The dose of nanoparticles to which cell cultures are being exposed was evaluated in the normal operation of the in vitro cell culture exposure chamber based on measurements of the size specific nanoparticle collection efficiency of a cell free device. The average efficiency in delivering nanoparticles in the MEC was approximately 82%. The nanoparticle deposition was demonstrated by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Analysis and design of the MEC employs Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and true to geometry representations of nanoparticles with the aim to assess the uniformity of nanoparticle deposition among the culture wells. Final testing of the dose-controlled cell exposure system was performed by exposing A549 lung cell cultures to fluorescently labeled nanoparticles. Delivery of aerosolized nanoparticles was demonstrated by visualization of the nanoparticle fluorescence in the cell cultures following exposure. Also monitored was the potential of the aerosolized nanoparticles to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) (e.g. free radicals and peroxides generation), thus expressing the oxidative stress of the cells which can cause extensive cellular damage or damage on DNA.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the tissue compatibility of a silorane-based resin system (FiltekTM Silorane) and a methacrylatebased nanoparticle resin (FiltekTM Supreme XT) after implantation in the subcutaneous connective tissue of isogenic mice. One hundred and thirty five male isogenic BALB/c mice were randomly assigned to 12 experimental and 3 control groups, according to the implanted material and the experimental period of 7, 21 and 63 days. At the end of each period, the animals were killed and the tubes with the surrounding tissues were removed and processed for microscopic analysis. Samples were subjected to a descriptive and a semi-quantitative analyses using a 4-point scoring system (0-3) to evaluate the collagen fiber formation and inflammatory infiltrate. Data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis test (a=0.05). The results showed that there was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups considering the three evaluation periods (p>0.05). The silorane-based and the methacrylate-based nanoparticle resins presented similar tissue response to that of the empty tube (control group) after subcutaneous implantation in isogenic mice.

Nanomaterials with structures in the nanoscale (1 to 100 nm) often have chemical, physical and bioactive characteristics different from those of larger entities of the same material. This is interesting for industry but raises questions about the health of exposed people. However, little is known so far about the exposure of workers to inhalable airborne nanomaterials. We investigated several activities in research laboratories and industry to learn about relevant exposure scenarios. Work process analyses were combined with measurements of airborne particle mass concentrations and number−size distributions. Background levels in research settings were mostly low, while in industrial production, levels were sometimes elevated, especially in halls near busy roads or in the presence of diesel fork lifts without particle filters. Peak levels were found in an industrial setting dealing with powders (up to 80,000 particles/cm³ and up to 15 mg/m³). Mostly low concentrations were found for activities involving liquid applications. However, centrifugation and lyophilization of nanoparticle containing solutions resulted in very high particle number concentrations (up to 300,000 particles/cm³), whereas no increases were seen for the same activities conducted with nanoparticle−free liquids. No significant increases of particle concentrations were found for processes involving nanoparticles bound to surfaces. Also no increases were observed in laboratories that were visualizing properties and structures of small amounts of nanomaterials. Conclusion: When studying exposure scenarios for airborne nanomaterials, the focus should not only be on processes involving nano−powders, but also on processes involving intensively treated nanoparticle−containing liquids. Paclitaxel (Tx)-loaded anti-HER2 immunonanoparticles (NPs-Tx-HER) were prepared by the covalent coupling of humanized monoclonal anti-HER2 antibodies (trastuzumab, Herceptin) to Tx-loaded poly (dl-lactic acid) nanoparticles (NPs-Tx) for the active targeting of tumor cells that overexpress HER2 receptors. The physico-chemical properties of NPs-Tx-HER were compared to unloaded immunonanoparticles (NPs-HER) to assess the influence of the drug on anti-HER2 coupling to the NP surface. The immunoreactivity of sulfo-MBS activated anti-HER2 mAbs and the in vitro efficacy of NPs-Tx-HER were tested on SKOV-3 ovarian cancer cells that overexpress HER2 antigens. Tx-loaded nanoparticles (NPs-Tx) obtained by a salting-out method had a size of 171+/-22 nm (P.I.=0.1) and an encapsulation efficiency of about of 78+/-10%, which corresponded to a drug loading of 7.8+/-0.8% (w/w). NPs-Tx were then thiolated and conjugated to activated anti-HER2 mAbs to obtain immunonanoparticles of 237+/-43 nm (P.I.=0.2). The influence of the activation step on the immunoreactivity of the mAbs was tested on SKOV-3 cells using 125I-radiolabeled mAbs, and the activity of the anti-HER2 mAbs was minimally affected after sulfo-MBS functionalization. Approximately 270 molecules of anti-HER2 mAbs were bound per nanoparticle. NPs-Tx-HER exhibited a zeta potential of 0.2+/-0.1 mV. The physico-chemical properties of the Tx-loaded immunonanoparticles were very similar to unloaded immunonanoparticles, suggesting that the encapsulation of the drug did not influence the coupling of the mAbs to the NPs. No drug loss was observed during the preparation process. DSC analysis showed that encapsulated Tx is in an amorphous or disordered-crystalline phase. These results suggest that Tx is entrapped in the polymeric matrix and not adsorbed to the surface of the NPs. In vitro studies on SKOV-3 ovarian cancer cells demonstrated the greater cytotoxic effect of NPs-Tx-HER compared to other Tx formulations. The results showed that at 1 ng Tx/ml, the viability of cells incubated with drug encapsulated in NP-Tx-HER was lower (77.32+/-5.48%) than the viability of cells incubated in NPs-Tx (97.4+/-12%), immunonanoparticles coated with Mabthera, as irrelevant mAb (NPs-Tx-RIT) (93.8+/-12%) or free drug (92.3+/-9.3%).
