A similar histopathologic picture of fatal hepatitis associated with widespread acute fatty changes in hepatocytes and single-cell necrosis was seen in epidemic cases occurring in two distinct equatorial areas having high prevalences of HBV and HDV infections. The cases were previously considered to be two different entities; Labrea hepatitis in Brazil, and Bangui hepatitis in the Central African Republic. However, the histopathologic findings suggest that they are pathogenetically and etiologically related to HBVand HDV infections, probably modified by some as yet unknown factor (s) present in equatorial forest zones.

From March 1991 to April 1992, 250 measles suspected cases were studied in the Municipality of Niterói, State of Rio de Janeiro. The median age found was 11 years and 76.0% of the cases were in school age children. Exposure histories were present in 149 patients and schools were the most frequent sites of transmission (45.0%). Vaccination status was known for 127 studied cases and 76.4% of them had received measles vaccine before their first birthday. One or more complications were reported for 68 cases aitd in 8.9% of the studied cases hospitalization was required. Frequency of complications varied according to each age group studied and were more commonly encountered among children < 1 year of age (55.6%). The history of previous vaccination did not diminish the number of complications of the cases studied. The results of this work show changes in age distribution of measles leading to sizeable outbreaks among teenagers and young adults.

It affects 5-20/100.000 people/year (particularly working adults in the 40ths), with huge impact on quality of life. Possible causes include infectious, circulatory, traumatic, immunologic, metabolic, neoplastic, neurologic, toxic and unidentified cochlear diseases. Nevertheless, SSHL’s etiology remains unknown in most cases (80%), giving rise to controversial (and frequently ineffective) treatments. Available therapies range from corticosteroids to antivirals, vasodilators, antiaggregants, anticoagulants, vitamins and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO). Given the lack of data concerning SSHL’s etiology and physiopathology, we intend to evaluate clinical evolution of such patients treated with HBO in the Underwater and Hyperbaric Medical Center (UHMC) at Lisbon from 2000 to 2005 during a minimum period of 5 years, in an attempt to identify eventual risk factors or clinical associations to SSHL. The intended retrospective study is based on the review of patients’ medical charts from UHMC and confidential follow-up questionnaires applied telephonically both to patients (study group) and patients’ spouse/partner/close family member (control group), focusing past and present medical history. A preliminary study of 20 subjects (10 of each group) was performed to anticipate difficulties and to estimate the required logistics. The identified difficulties were: 1) selection of subjects with valid phone numbers and complete medical charts (with initial and final audiograms); 2) telephonic contact with subjects from the study and control group; 3) human logistics required. As it is believed that SSHL is not a disease by itself but rather a symptom of an underlying disease, we believe that this epidemiologic study is important and will hopefully generate sound scientific knowledge concerning physiopathology and mechanism of disease of SSHL.

Analisando os resultados, concluímos que o perfil de expressão de Lp Paris foi modificado pela interacção com A. castellanii, no entanto essa mudança foi dependente da fase do seu ciclo de vida.-------ABSTRACT: Legionella is a pathogenic Gram-negative bacterium that replicates not only within aquatic protozoa like Acanthamoeba castellanii (A. castellanii), but also within human alveolar macrophages, which can result in a severe pneumonia. Legionella has a biphasic life cycle in broth, where exponential phase cultures display replicative traits and stationary bacteria express transmissive factors. Recent studies demonstrated that for successful infection of host cells, Legionella needs to ensure a precise timing of its life cycle. Many models of study were developed in order to learn about the intracellular life cycle and to identify the genes necessary for the host cell modulation. Although knowledge about the bacteria-host interaction is still limited, it appears that this interaction generate a pool of virulence traits, allowing the bacterium to infect human phagocytic cells and cause disease. The purpose of the present study was to investigate and select de critical genes for the infectivity of Legionella pneumophila strain Paris (Lp Paris), design and optimize a real time PCR technique for gene expression study and compare the expression profile of Lp Paris before and after co- culture of A. castellanii. The results show that eight of 12 genes in study changed its relative expression after coculture in A. castellanii when we performed the intracellular assays with early stationary phase Lp Paris cultures (five were induced and tree were repressed). When we performed the intracellular assays with late stationary phase Lp Paris cultures 11 genes showed a repressed relative expression. Analysing the results, we conclude that the expression profile of Lp Paris was modified by interaction with A. castellanii but this change was dependent of the timing of its life cycle.

The design of work organisation systems with automated equipment is facing new challenges and the emergence of new concepts. The social aspects that are related with new concepts on the complex work environments (CWE) are becoming more relevant for that design. The work with autonomous systems implies options in the design of workplaces. Especially that happens in such complex environments. The concepts of “agents”, “co-working” or “human-centred technical systems” reveal new dimensions related to human-computer interaction (HCI). With an increase in the number and complexity of those human-technology interfaces, the capacities of human intervention can become limited, originating further problems. The case of robotics is used to exemplify the issues related with automation in working environments and the emergence of new HCI approaches that would include social implications. We conclude that studies on technology assessment of industrial robotics and autonomous agents on manufacturing environment should also focus on the human involvement strategies in organisations. A needed participatory strategy implies a new approach to workplaces design. This means that the research focus must be on the relation between technology and social dimensions not as separate entities, but integrated in the design of an interaction system.
