We theoretically analyze the performance of transition metal dichalcogenide (MX2) single wall nanotube (SWNT) surround gate MOSFET, in the 10 nm technology node. We consider semiconducting armchair (n, n) SWNT of MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2 for our study. The material properties of the nanotubes are evaluated from the density functional theory, and the ballistic device characteristics are obtained by self-consistently solving the Poisson-Schrodinger equation under the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. Simulated ON currents are in the range of 61-76 mu A for 4.5 nm diameter MX2 tubes, with peak transconductance similar to 175-218 mu S and ON/OFF ratio similar to 0.6 x 10(5)-0.8 x 10(5). The subthreshold slope is similar to 62.22 mV/decade and a nominal drain induced barrier lowering of similar to 12-15 mV/V is observed for the devices. The tungsten dichalcogenide nanotubes offer superior device output characteristics compared to the molybdenum dichalcogenide nanotubes, with WSe2 showing the best performance. Studying SWNT diameters of 2.5-5 nm, it is found that increase in diameter provides smaller carrier effective mass and 4%-6% higher ON currents. Using mean free path calculation to project the quasi-ballistic currents, 62%-75% reduction from ballistic values in drain current in long channel lengths of 100, 200 nm is observed.

Phase equilibria in the Cu-rich corner of the ternary system Cu-Al-Sn have been re-investigated. Final equilibrium microstructures of 20 ternary alloy compositions near Cu3Al were used to refine the ternary phase diagram. The microstructures were characterized using optical microscopy (OM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis and transmission electron microscopy. Isothermal sections at 853, 845, 833, 818, 808, 803 and 773 K have been composed. Vertical sections have been drawn at 2 and 3 at% Sn, showing beta(1) as a stable phase. Three-phase fields (alpha + beta + beta(1)) and (beta + beta(1) + gamma(1)) result from beta -> alpha + beta(1) eutectoid and beta + gamma(1) -> beta(1) peritectoid reactions forming metastable beta(1) in the binary Cu-Al. With the lowering of temperature from 853 to 818 K, these three-phase fields are shifted to lower Sn concentrations, with simultaneous shrinkage and shifting of (beta + beta(1)) two-phase field. The three-phase field (alpha + beta + gamma(1)) resulting from the binary reaction beta -> alpha + gamma(1) shifts to higher Sn contents, with associated shrinkage of the beta field, with decreasing temperature. With further reduction of temperature, a new ternary invariant reaction beta + beta(1) -> alpha + gamma(1) is observed at similar to 813 K. The beta disappears completely at 803 K, giving rise to the three-phase field (alpha + beta(1) + gamma(1)). Some general guidelines on the role of ternary additions (M) on the stability of the ordered beta(1) phase are obtained by comparing the results of this study with data in the literature on other systems in the systems group Cu-Al-M.

In this study we determined the molecular mechanisms of how homocysteine differentially affects receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) synthesis in the bone. The results showed that oxidative stress induced by homocysteine deranges insulin-sensitive FOXO1 and MAP kinase signaling cascades to decrease OPG and increase RANKL synthesis in osteoblast cultures. We observed that downregulation of insulin/FOXO1 and p38 MAP kinase signaling mechanisms due to phosphorylation of protein phosphatase 2 A (PP2A) was the key event that inhibited OPG synthesis in homocysteine-treated osteoblast cultures. siRNA knockdown experiments confirmed that FOXO1 is integral to OPG and p38 synthesis. Conversely homocysteine increased RANKL synthesis in osteoblasts through c-Jun/JNK MAP kinase signaling mechanisms independent of FOXO1. In the rat bone milieu, high-methionine diet-induced hyperhomocysteinemia lowered FOXO1 and OPG expression and increased synthesis of proresorptive and inflammatory cytokines such as RANKL, M-CSF, IL-1 alpha, IL-1 beta, G-CSF, GM-CSF, MIP-1 alpha, IFN-gamma, IL-17, and TNF-alpha. Such pathophysiological conditions were exacerbated by ovariectomy. Lowering the serum homocysteine level by a simultaneous supplementation with N-acetylcysteine improved OPG and FOXO1 expression and partially antagonized RANKL and proresorptive cytokine synthesis in the bone milieu. These results emphasize that hyperhomocysteinemia alters the redox regulatory mechanism in the osteoblast by activating PP2A and deranging FOXO1 and MAPK signaling cascades, eventually shifting the OPG:RANKL ratio toward increased osteoclast activity and decreased bone quality (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. We determine the nature of coupled phonons in mixed crystal of Cs-0.9(NH4)(0.1)H2AsO4 using inelastic light scattering studies in the temperature range of 5 K to 300 K covering a spectral range of 60-1100 cm(-1). The phase transition in this system are marked by the splitting of phonon modes, appearance of new modes and anomalies in the frequency as well as linewidth of the phonon modes near transition temperature. In particular, we observed the splitting of symmetric (v(1)) and antisymmetric (v(3)) stretching vibrations associated with AsO4 tetrahedra below transition temperature (T-c(*) similar to 110 K) attributed to the lowering of site symmetry of AsO4 in orthorhombic phase below transition temperature. In addition, the step-up (hardening) and step-down (softening) of the AsO4 bending vibrations (v(4) (S9, S11) and v(2) (S6)) below transition temperature signals the rapid development of long range ferroelectric order and proton ordering. The lowest frequency phonon (S1) mode observed at similar to 92 cm(-1) shows anomalous blue shift (similar to 12 %) from 300 K to 5 K with no sharp transition near T-c(*) unlike other observed phonon modes signaling its potential coupling with the proton tunneling mode. Free nanoparticles of iron (Fe) and their colloids with high saturation magnetization are in demand for medical and microfluidic applications. However, the oxide layer that forms during processing has made such synthesis a formidable challenge. Lowering the synthesis temperature decreases rate of oxidation and hence provides a new way of producing pure metallic nanoparticles prone to oxidation in bulk amount (large quantity). In this paper we have proposed a methodology that is designed with the knowledge of thermodynamic imperatives of oxidation to obtain almost oxygen-free iron nanoparticles, with or without any organic capping by controlled milling at low temperatures in a specially designed high-energy ball mill with the possibility of bulk production. The particles can be ultrasonicated to produce colloids and can be bio-capped to produce transparent solution. The magnetic properties of these nanoparticles confirm their superiority for possible biomedical and other applications.

In this paper, we report the gas phase infrared spectra of fluorene and its methylated derivatives using a heated multipass cell and argon as a carrier gas. The observed spectra in the 4000-400 cm(-1) range have been fitted using the modified scaled quantum mechanical force field (SQMFF) calculation with the 6-311G** basis. The advantage of using the modified SQMFF method is that it scales the force constants to find the best fit to the observed spectral lines by minimizing the fitting error. In this way we are able to assign all the observed fundamental bands in the spectra. With consecutive methyl substitutions two sets of bands are found to shift in a systematic way. The set of four aromatic C-H stretching vibrations around 3000 cm(-1) shifts toward lower frequencies while the single most intense aromatic C-H out-of-plane bending mode around 750 cm(-1) shifts toward higher frequencies. The reason for shifting of aromatic C-H stretching frequency toward lower wave numbers with gradual methyl substitution has been attributed to the lengthening of the C-H bonds due to the +I effect of the methyl groups to the ring current as revealed from the calculations. While the unexpected shifting of the aromatic C-H out-of-plane bend toward higher wave numbers with increasing methyl substitution is ascribed to the lowering of the number of adjacent aromatic C-H bonds on the plane of the benzene ring with gradual methyl substitutions. Malaria is an infectious disease that mainly affects children and pregnant women from tropical countries. The mortality rate of people infected with malaria per year is enormous and became a public health concern. The main factor that has contributed to the success of malaria proliferation is the increased number of drug resistant parasites. To counteract this trend, research has been done in nanotechnology and nanomedicine, for the development of new biocompatible systems capable of incorporating drugs, lowering the resistance progress, contributing for diagnosis, control and treatment of malaria by target delivery. In this review, we discussed the main problems associated with the spread of malaria and the most recent developments in nanomedicine for anti-malarial drug delivery. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. In developing materials with better tribological properties, it is always conceived that the addition of softer phase would result in better frictional behavior. In order to address this issue, we report here the results of fretting wear study on Cu-10 wt% TiB2 and Cu-10 wt% TiB2-10 wt% Pb composites, sintered using spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. It was found out that the addition of softer phase i.e. 10 wt % Pb to Cu-10 wt% TiB2 composites has not resulted in the lowering of the coefficient of friction (COF). The combination of steady state COF (0.6) and wear rate (10(-3) mm(3)/N-m) was measured and such properties are even better than that obtained with TiB2 coatings reported in the literature. For Cu-10 wt% TiB2 sintered at different temperature, a lower wear resistance with increase in hardness is being measured. An attempt has been made to correlate the observed wear behavior with the surface and subsurface deformation. The formation of a wear-resistant delaminated tribolayer consisting of TiB2 particles and ultrafine oxide debris (Cu, Fe, Ti)(x)O-y was the reason assigned for the observed low wear rate of these composites. The cell nucleus functions amidst active cytoskeletal filaments, but its response to their contractile stresses is largely unexplored. We study the dynamics of the nuclei of single fibroblasts, with cell migration suppressed by plating onto micro-fabricated patterns. We find the nucleus undergoes noisy but coherent rotational motion. We account for this observation through a hydrodynamic approach, treating the nucleus as a highly viscous inclusion residing in a less viscous fluid of orientable filaments endowed with active stresses. Lowering actin contractility selectively by introducing blebbistatin at low concentrations drastically reduced the speed and coherence of the angular motion of the nucleus. Time-lapse imaging of actin revealed a correlated hydrodynamic flow around the nucleus, with profile and magnitude consistent with the results of our theoretical approach. Coherent intracellular flows and consequent nuclear rotation thus appear to be an intrinsic property of cells.

Background: This study was performed to understand the possible therapeutic activity of Terminalia paniculata ethanolic extract (TPEE) on non alcoholic fatty liver in rats fed with high fat diet. Methods: Thirty six SD rats were divided into 6 groups (n = 6): Normal control (NC), high fat diet (HFD), remaining four groups were fed on HFD along with different doses of TPEE (100,150 and 200 mg/kg b.wt) or orlistat, for ten weeks. Liver tissue was homogenized and analyzed for lipid profiles, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Further, the expression levels of FAS and AMPK-1 alpha were also studied in addition to histopathology examination of liver tissue in all the groups. Results: HFD significantly increased hepatic liver total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), free fatty acids (FFA) and MDA but decreased the activities of SOD and CAT which were subsequently reversed by supplementation with TPEE in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, TPEE administration significantly down regulated hepatic mRNA expression of FAS but up regulated AMPK-1 alpha compared to HFD alone fed group. Furthermore, western blot analysis of FAS has clearly demonstrated decreased expression of FAS in HFD + TPEE (200 mg/kg b. wt) treated group when compared to HFD group at protein level. Conclusions: Our biochemical studies on hepatic lipid profiles and antioxidant enzyme activities supported by histological and expression studies suggest a potential therapeutic role for TPEE in regulating obesity through FAS.

The well-known classical nucleation theory (CNT) for the free energy barrier towards formation of a nucleus of critical size of the new stable phase within the parent metastable phase fails to take into account the influence of other metastable phases having density/order intermediate between the parent metastable phase and the final stable phase. This lacuna can be more serious than capillary approximation or spherical shape assumption made in CNT. This issue is particularly significant in ice nucleation because liquid water shows rich phase diagram consisting of two (high and low density) liquid phases in supercooled state. The explanations of thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies of supercooled water often invoke the possible influence of a liquid-liquid transition between two metastable liquid phases. To investigate both the role of thermodynamic anomalies and presence of distinct metastable liquid phases in supercooled water on ice nucleation, we employ density functional theoretical approach to find nucleation free energy barrier in different regions of phase diagram. The theory makes a number of striking predictions, such as a dramatic lowering of nucleation barrier due to presence of a metastable intermediate phase and crossover in the dependence of free energy barrier on temperature near liquid-liquid critical point. These predictions can be tested by computer simulations as well as by controlled experiments. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

The magneto-dielectric coupling in (l00) oriented LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 single crystals has been investigated using temperature, frequency, and magnetic field dependent dielectric response. Electronic transport data divulges that polaronic hopping arises due to Emin-Holstein adiabatic small polarons. Spin realignment through external magnetic field favors faster polaronic hopping by lowering activation energy for dielectric relaxation. Finally, positive magneto-dielectricity and magnetoloss under increasing magnetic field at high frequency of the exciting ac field confirms intrinsic magneto-dielectric effect in disordered ferromagnetic-insulator LaMn0.5Co0.5O3. This study also emphasizes the need to use single crystals as well as the frequencies higher than the corresponding inverse relaxation time. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers have attracted a good deal of attention in recent years. In D-A systems, the introduction of electron withdrawing groups reduces E-g by lowering the LUMO levels whereas, the introduction of electron donating groups reduces E-g by raising the HOMO levels. Also, conjugated polymers with desired HOMO and LUMO energy levels could be obtained by the proper selection of donor and acceptor units. Because of this reason, D-A conjugated polymers are emerging as promising materials particularly for polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) and polymer solar cells (PSCs). We report the design and synthesis of four new narrow band gap donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers, PTCNN, PTCNF, PTCNV and PTCNO, containing electron donating 3,4-didodecyloxythiophene and electron accepting cyanovinylene units. The effects of further addition of electron donating and electron withdrawing groups to the repeating unit of a D-A conjugated polymer (PTCNN) on its optical and electrochemical properties are discussed. The studies revealed that the nature of D and A units as well as the extent of alternate D-A structure influences the optical and the electrochemical properties of the polymers. All the polymers are thermally stable up to a temperature of 300 degrees C under nitrogen atmosphere. The electrochemical studies revealed that the polymers possess low-lying HOMO energy levels and low-lying LUMO energy levels. In the UV-Vis absorption study, the polymer films displayed broad absorption in the wavelength region of 400-700 nm. The polymers exhibited low optical band gaps in the range 1.70 - 1.77 eV.

Existing compact models for common double-gate (CDG) MOSFETs are based on the fundamental assumption of having symmetric gate oxide thickness. In this paper, we demonstrate that using the unique quasi-linear relationship between the surface potentials, it is possible to develop compact model for CDG-MOSFETs without such approximation while preserving the mathematical complexity at the same level of the existing models. In the proposed model, the surface potential relationship is used to include the drain-induced barrier lowering, channel length modulation, velocity saturation, and quantum mechanical effect in the long-channel model and good agreement is observed with the technology computer aided design simulation results.

The reduction of the diffusion energy barrier for Li in electrodes is one of the required criteria to achieve better performances in Li ion batteries. Using density functional theory based calculations, we report a pressure induced manifold enhancement of Li-kinetics in bulk FCC fullerene. Scanning of the potential energy surface reveals a diffusion path with a low energy barrier of 0.62 eV, which reduces further under the application of hydrostatic pressure. The pressure induced reduction in the diffusion barrier continues till a uniform volume strain of 17.7% is reached. Further enhancement of strain increases the barrier due to the repulsion caused by C-C bond formation between two neighbouring fullerenes. The decrease in the barrier is attributed to the combined effect of charge transfer triggered by the enhanced interaction of Li with the fullerene as well as the change in profile of the local potential, which becomes more attractive for Li. The lowering of the barrier leads to an enhancement of two orders of magnitude in Li diffusivity at room temperature making pressurized bulk fullerene a promising artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI) for a faster rechargeable battery.
