Lignin was graft copolymerized with methyl methacrylate using manganic pyrophosphate as initiator. This modified lignin was then blended (up to 50 wt%) with low density polyethylene (LDPE) using a small quantity of poly[ethylene-co-(glycidyl methacrylate)] (PEGMA) compatibilizer. The mechanical properties of the blend were substantially improved by using modified lignin in contrast to untreated lignin. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed loss of crystallinity of the LDPE phase owing to the interaction between the blend components. Thermogravimetric analysis showed higher thermal stability of modified lignin in the domain of blend processing. This suggested that there is scope for useful utilization of lignin, which could also lead to the development of eco-friendly products. (c) 2005 Society of Chemical Industry.

An exact solution for determining the thermal stresses in a finite short cylinder due to an axisymmetric steady temperature field along the curved surface has been given. It is shown that a part of the solution obtained for this problem can be used to determine the thermal stresses in a finite solid cylinder heated over the end surfaces. Numerical results for a finite cylinder symmetrically heated over a portion on the curved surface and heated over the complete end surfaces have been given.

A new equation for predicting the thermal conductivities of organic liquids using dimension-less analysis is given. The equation (Equation Presented) correlates 51 different liquids tested within 11% average error and 17% standard deviation. A comparison of the proposed equation with the available correlations and its application to some industrially important liquids show that this equation can be safely used to calculate the thermal conductivities at 20°C. and 1 atm. pressure for organic liquids of known molecular weight. Cp and ΔHv - the only two parameters for which experimental values must be known for making use of this equation - can be calculated using other well known correlations. The proposed equation is not applicable to inorganic liquids.

The preparation of three different types of carbonates of praseodymium, neodymium and terbium has been described. The carbonates have been characterized by potentiometry, chemical analysis, X-ray crystallography, infra-red spectroscopy and by their thermal behaviour. The thermal decomposition of several carbonates has been studied exhaustively under a variety of conditions and the stoicheiometry, thermodynamics and energetics of the reactions at various stages of decomposition have been examined. The stoicheiometry of the oxides obtained as final products of decomposition has been examined.

A three-dimensional exact solution for determining the thermal stresses in a finite hollow cylinder subject to a steady state axisymmetric temperature field over one of its end surfaces has been given. Numerical results for a hollow cylinder, having lenght to outer diameter ratio equal to one and inner to outer diameter ratio equal to 0.75, subjected to a symmetric temperature variation over the end surfaces of the cylinder have been given.

A method of determining the thermal stresses in a flat rectangular isotropic plate of constant thickness with arbitrary temperature distribution in the plane of the plate and with no variation in temperature through the thickness is presented. The thermal stress have been obtained in terms of Fourier series and integrals that satisfy the differential equation and the boundary conditions. Several examples have been presented to show the application of the method.

A three-dimensional rigorous solution for determining thermal stresses in a finite solid cylinder due to a steady state axisymmetric temperature field over one of its end surfaces is given. Numerical results for a solid cylinder having a length to diameter ratio equal to one and subjected to a symmetric temperature variation over half the radius of the cylinder at the end surfaces are included. These results have been compared with the results of the approximate solution given by W. Nowacki.

The temperature dependence of thermal conductivity of liquids as given by Horrocks and McLaughlin is re-examined and useful relations to estimate thermal conductivity are presented. In the case of the 12 homologous series considered the maximum deviation is about 5%.

The significant correlation coefficient between the terrestial heat flow and thermal conductivity computed from the continental heat flow data by Horai and Nur [1]2) may be explained as a natural consequence of terrestrial heat flow through a random medium. The theory predicts a value of 0.40 for the correlation coefficient. A simple statistical test shows that the majority of the computed coefficients belong to the statistical population whose mean is equal to the theoretical correlation coefficient. There are, however, a few observations of unsually high correlation coefficient which cannot be explained by the above hypothesis.

The thermal degradation behavior of banana fiber and polypropylene/banana fiber composites has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis. Banana fiber was found to be decomposing in two stages, first one around 320 degrees C and the second one around 450 degrees C. For chemically treated banana fiber, the decomposition process has been at a higher temperature, indicating thermal stability for the treated fiber. Activation energies for thermal degradation were estimated using Coats and Redfern method. Calorific value of the banana fiber was measured using a constant volume isothermal bomb calorimeter. rystallization studies exhibited an increase in the crystallization temperature and crystallinity of polypropylene upon the addition of banana fiber. The indigenous cloud forests in the Taita Hills have suffered substantial degradation for several centuries due to agricultural expansion. Currently, only 1% of the original forested area remains preserved in this region. Furthermore, climate change imposes an imminent threat for local economy and environmental sustainability. In such circumstances, elaborating tools to conciliate socioeconomic growth and natural resources conservation is an enormous challenge. This dissertation tackles essential aspects for understanding the ongoing agricultural activities in the Taita Hills and their potential environmental consequences in the future. Initially, alternative methods were designed to improve our understanding of the ongoing agricultural activities. Namely, methods for agricultural survey planning and to estimate evapotranspiration were evaluated, taking into account a number of limitations regarding data and resources availability. Next, this dissertation evaluates how upcoming agricultural expansion, together with climate change, will affect the natural resources in the Taita Hills up to the year 2030. The driving forces of agricultural expansion in the region were identified as aiming to delineate future landscape scenarios and evaluate potential impacts from the soil and water conservation point of view. In order to investigate these issues and answer the research questions, this dissertation combined state of the art modelling tools with renowned statistical methods. The results indicate that, if current trends persist, agricultural areas will occupy roughly 60% of the study area by 2030. Although the simulated land use changes will certainly increase soil erosion figures, new croplands are likely to come up predominantly in the lowlands, which comprise areas with lower soil erosion potential. By 2030, rainfall erosivity is likely to increase during April and November due to climate change. Finally, this thesis addressed the potential impacts of agricultural expansion and climate changes on Irrigation Water Requirements (IWR), which is considered another major issue in the context of the relations between land use and climate. Although the simulations indicate that climate change will likely increase annual volumes of rainfall during the following decades, IWR will continue to increase due to agricultural expansion. By 2030, new cropland areas may cause an increase of approximately 40% in the annual volume of water necessary for irrigation.
