The conductivity of H2SiF6-doped emeraldine polymers is studied as a function of temperature in the range 50 less than or equal to T less than or equal to 180 K. The dopant concentration of the samples varies between 0.1 M and 1.0 M. The temperature dependence of the do electrical conductivity gives evidence for a transport mechanism based on variable-range hopping in three dimensions. Using Mott's formula for the de conductivity, physically meaningful values of the density of states at the Fermi energy, the hopping energy and hopping distance are calculated.

An experimental study of the temperature dependent dc electrical conductivity of doped poly (p-phenylene) in the range of 50-300 K has been presented. The results have been analyzed in the framework of some hopping models. We have observed that hopping models are not consistent with the temperature dependence of the conductivity data over the entire temperature range of measurement. We find that the logarithmic conductivity is proportional to T-beta, wherethe exponent beta is independent of temperature. It is shown that the most probable transport process in this material for the entire range of temperature is due to multiphonon-assisted hopping of the charge carriers that interact weakly with phonons. The parameters obtained from the fits of the experimental data to this model appear reasonable.

A side-chain methacrylate copolymer functionalized with the nonlinear optical chromophore 4-[N-ethyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)]amino-2'-chloro-4'-nitroazobenzene, disperse red-13, was prepared and characterized. The chromophore relaxation was investigated measuring the decay of the electrooptic coefficient r(13) and the complex dielectric constant at different temperatures. Results obtained below and above T-g were analyzed using the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts(KWW) equation, through the study of the temperature dependence of the KWW parameters. Above T-g the relaxation time experimental data were fitted to the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation and its parameters determined. Chromophore relaxation leading to the decrease of electrooptic properties was found associated with a primary alpha relaxation. The obtained WLF equation parameters were introduced into the Adam-Gibbs-Tool-Narayanaswamy-Moynihan equation, and the overall relaxation time temperature dependence was successfully obtained in terms of the fictive temperature, accounting for the sample thermal treatment and allowing optimized thermal treatment to be found. The copolymer KWW stretching parameter at the glass transition temperature lies close to the limit value for short-range interactions, i.e., 0.6, suggesting that the chromophore group is participating in primary a relaxation.

In this article we present a concise report on our studies on the magnetic behavior and structural arrangements of the inverse spinel Zn7-xMxSb2O12 system (M = Ni, Co). Studies on the temperature dependence of the magnetization (M) of several samples in this system showed the occurrence of a spin-glass-like state in temperatures around 10 K. The capability of this system to hold magnetic ions in either octahedral and/or tetrahedral positions is responsible for the occurrence of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. This condition is likely to cause the appearance of the observed spin-glass-like behavior. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The optical properties of cubic GaN epitaxial layers were investigated by modulated photoreflectance (PR) and photoluminescence in the temperature interval from 5 to 300 K. The epilayers were grown on GaAs(001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy using a nitrogen RIF-activated plasma source. The PR spectra show a transition which is well fitted using the third-derivative functional form of the unperturbed dielectric function, which we interpret as band-to-band transition. Our results allow determination of the temperature dependence of the main gap of c-GaN and give insights into the residual strain in the film, as well as allow us to estimate the binding energy of the complex formed by an exciton bound to a neutral acceptor. The temperature dependence has been investigated for the photoinduced birefringence in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from the azocopolymer 4-[N- ethyl -N-(2-hydroxyethyl)] amino-2'-chloro-4'-nitroazobenzene (MMA-DR13) mixed with cadmium stearate. The buildup and relaxation of the birefringence in the range from 20 to 296 K were fitted with a Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) function, with a beta-value of 0.78-0.98 for the build-up and 0.18-0.27 for the decay. This is consistent with a distribution of time constants for the kinetics of the birefringence processes. The maximum birefringence increased with increasing temperature up to 120 K because the free volume fluctuation also increased with temperature. Above 120 K, the birefringence decreased with temperature as thermal diffusion dominates. In the latter range of temperature, an Arrhenius behavior is inferred for both build-up and decay of birefringence. In each case two activation energies were obtained: 0.8 and 5 kJ/mol for the build-up and 10 and 30 kJ/mol for the decay. The energies for the build-up are much lower than those associated with motion of the polymer chain, which means that the dynamics is governed by the orientation of the chromophores. For the decay, local motion of lateral groups of the polymer chains becomes important as the activation energies are within the range of gamma-relaxation energies. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Glass structure and fluorine motion dynamics are investigated in lead-cadmium fluorgermanate glasses by means of differential scanning calorimetry, Raman scattering, x-ray absorption (EXAFS), electrical conductivity (EC), and F-19 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Glasses with composition 60PbGeO(3)-xPbF(2)-yCdF(2) (in mol %), with x+y=40 and x=10, 20, 30, 40, are studied. Addition of metal fluorides to the base PbGeO3 glass leads to a decrease of the glass transition temperature (T-g) and to an enhancement of the ionic conductivity properties. Raman and EXAFS data analysis suggest that metagermanate chains form the basic structural feature of these glasses. The NMR study leads to the conclusion that the F-F distances are similar to those found in pure crystalline phases. Experimental results suggest the existence of a heterogeneous glass structure at the molecular scale, which can be described by fluorine rich regions permeating the metagermanate chains. The temperature dependence of the NMR line shapes and relaxation times exhibits the qualitative and quantitative features associated with the high fluorine mobility in these systems. Dielectric and Raman scattering experiments were performed on polycrystalline Pb1-xCaxTiO3 thin films (x=0.10, 0.20, 0.30, and 0.40) as a function of temperature. The results showed no shift in the dielectric constant (K) maxima, a broadening with frequency, and a linear dependence of the transition temperature on increasing Ca2+ content. on the other hand, a diffuse-type phase transition was observed upon transforming from the cubic paraelectric to the tetragonal ferroelectric phase in all thin films. The temperature dependence of Raman scattering spectra was investigated through the ferroelectric phase transition. The temperature dependence of the phonon frequencies was used to characterize the phase transitions. Raman modes persisted above the tetragonal to cubic phase transition temperature, although all optical modes should be Raman inactive. The origin of these modes was interpreted in terms of a breakdown of the local cubic symmetry due to chemical disorder. The lack of a well-defined transition temperature and the presence of broad bands in some temperature interval above the FE-PE phase transition temperature suggested a diffuse-type phase transition. This result corroborates the dielectric constant versus temperature data, which showed a broad ferroelectric phase transition in these thin films.

Experimental viscosity values of sucrose, glucose, and fructose aqueous solutions in a large range of temperatures (0 to 85 degrees C) and concentrations (10 to 60% w/w) that might be encountered in food processes were obtained in order to contribute to extending the available database of food properties. The temperature dependence of viscosity could be adequately described by the Arrhenius model, and the activation energy was well represented by a unique function of the solute volume fraction, valid for sucrose, glucose, and fructose solutions.

Electrical conductive textured LaNiO3/SrTiO3 (100) thin films were successfully produced by the polymeric precursor method. A comparison between features of these films of LaNiO3 (LNO) when heat treated in a conventional furnace (CF) and in a domestic microwave (MW) oven is presented. The x-ray diffraction data indicated good crystallinity and a structural orientation along the (h00) direction for both films. The surface images obtained by atomic force microscopy revealed similar roughness values, whereas films LNO-MW present slightly smaller average grain size (similar to 80 nm) than those observed for LNO-CF (60-150 nm). These grain size values were in good agreement with those evaluated from the x-ray data. The transport properties have been studied by temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity rho(T) which revealed for both films a metallic behavior in the entire temperature range studied. The behavior of rho(T) was investigated, allowing to a discussion of the transport mechanisms in these films. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

The temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity and the F-19 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of PbGeO3-PbF2CdF, glasses and glass ceramics are investigated. The measured conductivity values of the glasses are above 10(-5) Skin at 500 K, and increase with increasing lead fluoride content. Activation energies extracted from the conductivity data are in the range 0.59-0.73 eV. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that in these oxyfluoride glasses lead fluoride rich clusters are dispersed in a metagermanate based matrix providing increasing mobility pathways for conducting ions. The conductivity of a sample of the glass ceramic of composition (mol%) 60PbGeO(3-)20PbF(2)-20CdF(2) was found to be smaller than that in the corresponding glass, suggesting that there are poor ionic conducting regions in the interface between the nanometer sized crystals. The temperature dependence of the F-19 relaxation times, measured in the range 100-800 K, exhibit the qualitative features associated with high fluorine mobility in both, glass and glass ceramics materials. We suggest that de-convolution of the spin-lattice relaxation rates observed in the glass ceramics shows that the observed high temperature rate maximum is associated with the diffusional motions of the fluorine ions in beta-PbF2 crystals. Electrically Detected Magnetic Resonance (EDMR) was used to investigate the influence of dye doping molecules on spin-dependent exciton formation in Aluminum (III) 8-hydroxyquinoline (Alq(3)) based OLEDs with different device structures and temperature ranges. 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-{2-[(4-diphenylamino-phenyl]ethyl}-4H-pyran (DCM-TPA) and 5,6,11,12-tetraphenylnaphthacene (Rubrene) were used as dopants. A strong temperature dependence have been observed for doped OLEDs, with a decrease of two orders of magnitude in EDMR signal for temperatures above similar to 200 K. The signal temperature dependence were fitted supposing different spin-lattice relaxation processes. The results suggest that thermally activated vibrations of dopants molecules induce spin pair dissociation, reducing the signal.

In the present paper, the ionic conductivity and the dielectric relaxation properties on the poly(vinyl alcohol)-CF(3)COONH(4) polymer system have been investigated by means of impedance spectroscopy measurements over wide ranges of frequencies and temperatures. The electrolyte samples were prepared by solution casting technique. The temperature dependence of the sample's conductivity was modeled by Arrhenius and Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher (VTF) equations. The highest conductivity of the electrolyte of 3.41x10 (-aEuro parts per thousand 3) (Omega cm) (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) was obtained at 423 K. For these polymer system two relaxation processes are revealed in the frequency range and temperature interval of the measurements. One is the glass transition relaxation (alpha-relaxation) of the amorphous region at about 353 K and the other is the relaxation associated with the crystalline region at about 423 K. Dielectric relaxation has been studied using the complex electric modulus formalism. It has been observed that the conductivity relaxation in this polymer system is highly non-exponential. From the electric modulus formalism, it is concluded that the electrical relaxation mechanism is independent of temperature for the two relaxation processes, but is dependent on composition.
